what's the point of a custom kernal? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

I am fairly new to rooting and have the op7pro rooted and was wondering what the deal is custom kernals and what the benefits are and how hard it is to use one

Its modification of the stock kernal that can provide extra features, improve performance and battery life. They all are a bit different and there really inst a better one of them all. Its all personal preference so I recommend giving them all a try for a few days and see how your phone performs.

I've seen a lot of good things about elementalx and I just installed it and followed it's instructions and flashed it and should I mess with any options or just leave it as is?

I personally don't mess with any settings but if you happen to I recommend referencing https://androidmodguide.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html?m=1 so you know what each option does. Also if you want to flash another kernal you can still use EXKM to manage the kernal.

Kernels allow you to modify the governor's behavior or use alternatives, boost parameters, clock speed, memory thresholds, block wakelocks, under or overclock, etc. They're often accompanied by newer drivers (ex. Wlan from CAF), Linux upstreams, fixes from QC, new features like k lapse, and so on.
CPU governors and boost can be tailored to be aggressive or passive. I'm more concerned with endurance than scores, so the latter suits me.

I have mixed feelings on custom kernels nowadays. I used to be enthusiastic, but eventually realized that every rose has its thorns. Some custom kernels are truly excellent on certain phones. Some phones just don't play nice with custom kernels, and you could lose features until you flash a different kernel. Modern Android stock kernels are stock for a reason, in the same sense that some wearable things are "one size fits all". The good thing is that kernels are super easy to flash on a bootloader unlocked & rooted phone!

Which kernal is ultimate speed? Some guy benchmarked 440,000 on atutu, I max out 380k

Flash smurf kernel, you can try its gaming mode.
It is easy to flash and it has an app to change setting.
Im using firefox on balanced mode, my phone is consuming about 5% battery per hour.

What all have you disabled/done to achieve this?

That also means nothing without the battery graph as the user could have partially charged the phone and that doesn't rest anything until the phone is fully charged to 100%. Not saying he can't get that, I'm getting 9 to 10 hours sot per charge. Just need to show the battery graph too.

Undervolt?

THIS THREAD IS MEANT FOR DEVS ON THE MATTER OF UNDERVOLT
According to the guy who made setcpu.
pershoot just changed the voltage used by adjusting the voltages (in mV) in the acpu_freq_tbl table in acpuclock-scorpion.c
So if we just edit the table in our own acpuclock-arm11.c(or acpuclock-arm11.c-OCing), that should give us undervolt?
It can't be that simple?
Code:
/* MSM7201A Levels 3-6 all correspond to 1.2V, level 7 corresponds to 1.325V. */
enum {
VDD_0 = 0,
VDD_1 = 1,
VDD_2 = 2,
VDD_3 = 3,
VDD_4 = 4,
VDD_5 = 5,
VDD_6 = 6,
VDD_7 = 7,
VDD_END
};
Thanks to kleranc for idea.
I should probably update this since it has been reincarnated for some reason. lol.
Regardless, this image will explain everything(thanks jus10o for the nice drawing):

I have to be clear about a few things though:
Under my own testing, and from my own experiences; our processor isn't capable of exerting itself that much. So if you are using an undervolted kernel, it really only undervolts the higher frequencies as you can see in the table above. This is good and bad.
Good: Because you're not using that much juice from the battery and you keep a lower core temp
Bad: Because you may notice performance loss
It also has to be noted that not all processors will behave equally: you may experience no performance loss, or you may experience complete loss. It's a roll of the dice.
About lower frequencies and undervolting(from GSM Hero forum):
dipje said:
To all
Now, about the 'undervolting': A lot of talk and discussion has been going on in the kernel thread(s), and I think every kernel 'hacker' in the end ended up with pretty much the same frequency table and settings. Going lower than VDD_3 ended up in waking-issues or not-responding heroes. Some worked, most didn't. You see the ROMs here and there that used 19mhz and / or VDD_2 or lower now releasing updated versions with just a bit more juice and mhz during sleep, because some heroes really aren't waking up properly.
Or aging 7200 just needs a bit of juice apparently

Well at higher-frequencies we'd benefit a lot on battery life. With just about everyone using Overclock kernels, this could really help out.
For some of us, battery life means a lot.
So phusson has a simple fix for dropping VDD levels.
Here
Name sounds familiar? Yeah he's the same guy who helped us get overlocking on our msm7k phones
So credit to him. Should have somthing ready by tomorrow.
if i am not mistaken lowering the voltage would increase the heat at high clock speeds. this is just a guess from my engineering background.

Yes it would increase the heat, but no substantially. Besides, we wouldn't decrease the voltage too much. Finding just a "safe" undervolt to conserve battery(if it exists).
figured i should update since this has been done...

Huh? Excuse me, but I have an engineering background too (materials science) and must have missed that lecture. What is the principle behind this? I'm really skeptical because I'm 99% sure from my years of PC modding experience that a lower voltage is synonymous with better battery life, longer life-time (opposite effect of over-volting), and lower temperatures.
There are no disadvantages other than instability, which only happens if your voltage is TOO low.
Edit: here's a source that backs my claim

But will this work on sense based ROMs? I know that the frameworks are different with AOSP ROMs. I've been wanting to do this for a while now but I have no expertise at all.
RE: c00ller
I have to agree with c00ller on this. As an engineer with a physics background, and more importantly, an avid PC overclocker, it is considered common knowledge that lower voltages produce less heat, decrease power consumption, and sacrifice stability at higher clock speeds.
Considering that some of our hero's can be clocked up to 768 mHz stable, undervolting should be doable to a reasonable extent. In fact, if somebody wanted to keep stock frequencies, ie up to only 528, a significant amount of undervolting could probably be accomplished.

Check out my blue echo rom later tonight. Decadence just built me a boot.img for my rom with oc/UV at 710 oc and free autokiller built in. Ill upload tonight and its a sense based rom
Just for the sake of clarity:
Will this work on sense roms? (a simple yes or no will do)
Can this be worked into existing kernels?
If someone has a free second, if you want to throw the undervolting into darch's 710 kernel for fresh 2.3.3, i'll test it within 10 minutes of it being posted and throw my results out here.

Papa: Since there are multiple versions of all of these kernels at this point, I just want to be clear...
Is the undervolted kernel that you're going to post a mod of the "DarchKernelv4 710mhz with Free Memory Tweak For Fresh 2.1.1/2.1.2/2.3.3" ??
Some people were reporting possible issues with the FreeMem Tweak and there was talking rolling back to v3...so, are you basing off of v3 or v4? And am I correct in thinking that's the right kernel family?

Just to clarify kernel != ramdisk .
The kernel is #15 from darchdroid 2.7 from the uv.zip just thrown together with the ramdisk from 2.3.3. That equals the new boot.img.

HOW?!?! I get a max of 12 to 13 on heavy usage.
If anyone does do this, I find that I get great battery life now after trying the CDMA/GSM fix (cant find the link).
Might wanna be something to look into for future ROMs. (From what I remember, the glitch shows the phone as looking for GSM networks while it's connected to a CDMA network. I followed the instructions to correct this and it's had a positive impact on my battery life. Getting near double the life now).
You guys are on 3G aren't you? I don't even get 2 hours on 4G with medium heavy usage.

8-14 on moderate use to heavy is all you are going to be getting. I doubt you'll see a rom aimed only at battery life. Find a rom with sense removed (there are a few of them) or asop and further remove junk you don't use especially the social network **** and enjoy.

You really don't even need an app from the market like the guy suggests in that thread. If you just dial *#*#INFO#*#*, then go to Phone Information, then scroll down to 'Set preferred network type' and select CDMA auto (prl) from the list.

what software is that use to show the CPU and Battery usage.

Actually that CDMA/GSM fix, can it be applied through a rom? I'm pretty sure that's a built in phone setting where you have to dial through the keypad. Regardless, think of it this way. Processors and memory run off of voltage. The more it's in use the more power it will take. Now undervolting and underclocking the CPU is an obvious fix but also the memkiller settings. The more memory that is in use the more power is being taken up. This is why AOSP has better battery life than Sense under the same circumstances. With a more aggressive memkiller you can further increase battery life. I am going to build aggressive settings in my next release of my rom but for custom settings you can always get Autokill from the Market, assuming your phone is rooted of course.
I'm getting FANTASTIC battery life on the latest Fresh ROM.

Has setcpu been updated with native evo support, or are people still rocking N1 settings?
You get OC Widget by searching "overclock widget" in the Market. However, I don't see the need for it since the EVO automatically scales the CPU clock, and we can't overclock.

I guess i should have tried spelling out overclock instead of OC (DUH).. lol, and i have heard that, and have no doubt that it is true, but some people are claiming it has given them some improvement in battery life... Maybe its just a placebo effect, but i am gonna run a few tests and see what i can come up with....
I read a post on another forum from a guy that sounded like he REALLY knew what he was talking about and said the same thing you did but with some pretty big words and tech talk to back it up. But hey.. its free, and i like trying new stuff... even if its so i can see it for myself that it doesnt do anything.
Am I the only one that realizes overclock widget and setcpu don't work on our phones? I have tried both on 3 different ROMs and checked through a adb shell the cpu usage while the phone was asleep and neither one works no matter what I set the programs to.
Awesome, I've officially made it >24 hours on a single charge! (Though I did plug it into my laptop for 3 minutes to transfer some stuff)

I have done some research into the Android OS draining the majority of the battery and didn't really find anything with the SGS4G, however found the issue in the Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SL i9003, Galaxy Note GT-N7000, and the Samsung Infuse 4G forums, and I am sure there is probably more..
Out of all those forums this is the only one that seemed like it could have a solution linking it to:

My only problem, I have neither of those on my phone.
I was hoping that maybe somebody here could help me diagnose the issue. For the longest time I just have thought my battery is getting old and isn't holding a charge as long, or I just use my phone too much. However after watching my Battery Usage over the past couple days makes me wonder if there isn't another issue here.
I am currently running RaverX3X's amazing Valhalla BlackEdition Final with the Booster and FBis251's bhundven's SMS KJ6 v0.2.0 Kernel. I also have installed the BraviaHack and am using the KG4 Modem. I am able to post logs or anything that can possible help. I have used thomas.raines 1-Clink Gremlin Remover following each step to the "T" with no luck of fixing the issue.
I have attached more Battery Usage Stats as well in case they might help.

Thanks guys, I have pretty much resolved the issue as I have switched Kernels and am no longer experiencing huge battery loss from anything other then the Display which is just plain normal. I still plan to update over to FBis251's version of ValhallaBlack as I have been keeping an eye on it, and debating when to make the switch.
[On a side note] I'm still not hundred percent sure why the Kernel was giving me this issue to begin with. If I had more experience with Android development debugging I'd love to dig deeper into this issue. However though since it doesn't seem to be a huge issue among other users in the SGS4G forums, and it is easily fixed by using another Kernel I don't really see the need.
Thanks again FBis251, and m0bstr.
Problems with Android OS with Gingerbread and Froyo
I have now encountered battery drainage problems on two different Samsung phones. For a long time my Samsung Captivate ATT running Froyo 2.2 was killing my battery. I was about to buy a new phone. I touched base with Samsung and decided to back up my phone and do the factory wipe.
After the reset and the loss of my apps, the phone seems to be working ok. Even a battery which constantly appeared to be dead, is now working fine and holding a charge.
Today another phone the Samsung Glide ATT running Gingerbread seems to have caught the problem and Android OS is using 25% of the the battery. This is ridiculous.
Normally, about 75% is for display and OS doesn't even show up.
Another person at work had an Android exhibiting similar problems today. This problem seems to be pretty widespread if I know three people with this problem. Feedback appreciated.
Maybe "One Power Guard" can help you downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889740

+1 for a lot of truth in it! It's also phone-dependent. Not all phones experience BSOD's with all kernels. It's an art to mixing and matching the kernel to your phone that gives the best performance. For example, my phone is SUPER-PICKY when it comes to Kernels. I can't OC my phone above 1.2Ghz or the phone will just randomly reboot. Also, ALL kernels cause my phone to BSOD while charging. I have to enable the preference to never let my phone go to sleep while charging. Before you start suggesting solutions to this, I have tried everything from increasing the voltage of the lower frequencies. I have tried eliminating the lower frequencies while sleeping. All of it. My phone is just a PITA when it comes to charging. I can live with it being on all the time while charging.
Yeah being on while charging is no big deal. How do you do this though? I only found a setting to keep the display on for 30 minutes tops in my G2x running CM 7.2.

your welcome
"Well, bust my buttons! Why didn't you say that in the first place? That's a horse of a different color!"
The "Settings-->Applications-->Development->Stay Awake" trick works for me as well. I'm running cm7 -20130201-nightly on the v21y baseband with the 2.6.32.60-mazkrnl.GB kernel. Without the stay awake setting enabled the phone will still freeze but I haven't had the a problem since enabling the setting over two weeks ago. I also have a Titanium Backup schedule set up that alternates between backing up new applications and saving modified data at 3:30am every night with a device reboot for good measure.
This is the first time in the almost two years I've owned the phone that I've been fully satisfied with it. I feel like I can live out the rest of my three year contract with the phone now without a problem. I guess the note 2 (or a sony xperia device, I can't decide) will have to wait, my G2X still has some fight in it yet.
I must also note that I have never had an issue with any of the ics of jb ROMs. The last ROM I was running was "[Dez 30] [P999][ROM][CM10] ParanoidAndroid v2.56 Hackfest JB [build9beta]." I used it for over a month but the lack of a decent camera, no video recording ability, wifi drain, general battery drain and battery indication problems eventually became too much. The ROM itself was stable as a rock but the small issues become too much after a while.

[Q] Rapid battery drain

Hi all, I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM version (maguro)
I've flashed many roms before on this phone, including some unofficial kitkat roms.
After flashing one of these roms, I noticed a big impact on battery draining: down to 0% in a matter of 10 hours.
I decided to reflash the stock android rom 4.3. You know, like a total wipe, reflash everything from scratch.
Battery life remained the same, so I bought an original Samsung battery for my phone on ebay.
While I saw increase, it lasted now max a few hours more than my old battery. So the problem is not fixed.
I've tried to depict the problem but haven't found it. BetterBatterStats & co don't report a problem nor an app that is misbehaving or eating battery. Neither is network connectivity the problem: I use 2G only, and the connection is stable where I am.

As far as I am aware, it is not your typical "bad app" or connectivity problem, but something else.
Does anyone have an idea what I might have done wrong when flashing that could cause this?
Could it be a hardware problem I inflicted by flashing?
Should I follow a particular guide and reflash again?

Okay fair enough, but flashing new roms is useless if I don't have any idea of the cause.
Also, does flashing a rom also flash other radios etc? In that case you are right this might help.
I've noticed that battery drain is equally worse even when in airplane mode btw.

Tried using franco instead of stock kernel. Now flashed Paranoid Android 4.44, no difference.
I tried some other suggestions on fora, such as reboot while in airplane mode to restrain anything from starting with data.
But to no avail, the battery drain is constant and very high.

Minimum freq is set to 192 Mhz (lowest in franco kernel).
CPU Spy reports that it has been 8:19 in deep sleep or for 94%, still had same drain :/
May be the battery you purchased is not the original one..
check another battery or you may calibrate the battery after get 100% charged
