no data connection on custom roms - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi. first let me state, ive had no training in developing, im teaching myself bits and pieces here and there (through trial and error). now onto my issue:
I have a moto g 2015 osprey, us cellular, 8g version. ive got twrp recovery installed, and have tried two different custom roms, resurrection remix 5.5.7, and CM 12.1 latest nightly, both with stock kernel and with squid 2 kernel. the problem i am having is, with both roms, i have wifi, and can activate my phone on us cellular towers, but i have no data connection. (btw, i got both roms from android development thread, if that matters). hopefully someone is able to help me get my phone working on custom roms with the info i have provided, as i absolutely abhore stock roms. if not, ill gladly provide any info requested. and thanks in advance!

Those roms may have been wiping out your APN settings under Settings>More>Cellular networks>Access Point Names.
I don't have them in front of me but Google US Cellular APN and you should find them. Be sure and save the settings at the top before you back out. There are apps for APN settings but I haven't had much luck with any of them. There is one app though that I believe does give you the APN settings even if it won't change them. Search in Play for APN and you'll find lots of apps.

pardon, i forgot to mention that. CM 12.1 WAS deleting my apn, reloaded stock, took screenshots of my apn settings, loaded CM 12.1 and set them up manually. still no data connection. Resurrection did not delete my apn, but it added 2 others. selected the apn my carrier assigned when i got the phone, still no data connection.

I can't even register it on the towers. Just reports "Cellular network not available"

[Q] G2x T-Mobile US Blank APN

I've seen this discussed in many other places so forgive me if this post is redundant, but I have yet to find a clear solution.
I'm running official MIUI US 2.3.16 on my G2x, with the Faux kernel. The problem now is that the T-Mobile 'my account' app doesn't load, and the about phone > status dialog displays my phone number as 'unknown'. Voice calls still work fine, but data services are completely off without wifi.
The APN list is empty, and there are no settings there whatsoever. Is this a HW defect or is it just the rom? The stock kernel did not work either.
I'm assuming that in order for my data services to work, I have to have the correct APN in the list. I read about a method here, and while that did bring back the APN settings back, they were gone again after a reboot. Additionally, the T-Mobile app still did not work even when the APNs were there.
And to clarify, I don't recall having any of these issues in the past with the stock rom and stock kernel, data services and the app worked fine.
Thanks!

[Q] Modifying APNs with 4.4.2 (NE1)

Hello,
I've been putting off asking the question as I thought that somebody else had to have gone through this already but I've had poor luck looking through the forum and Google hasn't been able to help.
I'll be traveling to Italy in the near future with my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (Build KOT49H.I535VRUDNE1). I would like to pick up a TIN or WIND SIM while I'm there, primarily for data usage. From what I've read, once I install the 3rd party SIM, I'll need to update the APN settings to get data to work.
Stock, it looks like the APN settings are uneditable. I rooted the phone with towelroot (if only everything were so easy) and then checked the APN settings to see if I could add another network. No dice.
Poking around on the web, it looks like in the past, people have been able to work around this by downloading build prop editor and adding the following two lines:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
I gave this a shot and was surprised to see the APN menu gone when I went back into my network settings. Through trial and error, I determined that the inclusion of ro.csc.sale_code=LOL changes my Mobile Networks options from:
- Mobile Data
- Global Data Roaming Access
- Roaming
- Signal Strength
- Network Mode
- Access Point Names
- Network Operators
to:
- Mobile Data
- Data Roaming
- Network Mode (GSM is not an option in here)
- System Select
- Dial Up Networking
There is no option to modify APN settings there. Am I missing something silly? Did something change in KitKat 4.4.2 that has caused this approach to "unlocking" the APN settings to become invalid? Is everything really ok and I'll have access to the APN settings when I insert the italian carrier's SIM card?
I'm game for other approaches as well. At one point, I thought I saw an article that talked about setting up a pointer to the APN settings prior to updating the prop file but I haven't been able to relocate that.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Aaron
In the event somebody else is looking for the answer, I got my hands on a TIM sim card today, installed it in the phone and the APN menu reappeared and let me enter a new APN. Looks like the answer as of today for this phone is TowelRoot, SuperSU, BuildProp and install the 3rd party sim.
Take care,
Aaron

Latest VZW OTA/Firmware update 4.4.3 removes 'New APN' setting.

I noticed that under Network settings for Global or GSM, the New APN feature to manually add an APN for different sim is gone. Looks like it's an auto detect feature now. I travel overseas for business alot and use pre-paid SIM cards. Not all prepaid sim cards have the data APN coded. I just found out on my trip here to Taiwan and couldn't get data on my phone because the option for adding the APN is no longer available. I tried multiple settings, different ROM's and no good. Only when I downgraded my firmware did the option come back. Glad I'm rooted, it sux, but had to downgrade and reflash back to the old 4.4.2 firmware/rUU and run custom ROM. Until this is addressed by verizon, there will be no way to manually add an APN.

Update: Figured the APN issue thing out
Thanks to member DOTTAT for giving me the direction I needed to get the APN assignment issue resolved. I just needed to do things differently for getting the APN to load up. Basically had to to to the 'Network Preferences' section to add the network my SIM cards are registered on. This is a long list to scroll through. After I selected the network, there is multiple options to add the network type (GSM,UMTS,LTE, etc.) Had to enable three different versions then reboot the phone. After, there were two APN's that automatically populated and I was able to edit. Thanks again to DOTTAT for the direction.:good:

Sounds good man... Glad this will be useful for all. Might even take some guess work out of some of the weirder apns.

I apologize but I did not see the steps to get the apn settings access. I've got the HTC One M7 for Verizon on 4.4.3 and can not change apn settings. What would the steps be? Thank you so much for any and all help.

I figured I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one... It seems I and many other Verizon M8 users have encountered the same problem:
I get no list of network APNs under "Network Preferences." There are zero entries, even though a message pops up to say the list is full.
I tried manually entering the MCC/MNC numbers for my carrier abroad (Claro Brazil) but this doesn't resolve the problem. I am stuck with only voice but no mobile data service.
Has anyone found a solution to this? Verizon tech support of course insists "just pop in the SIM and it should work automatically" as does the Brazilian carrier.
Does anybody know where in the phone the APN settings are stored, to edit them manually?

US Cellular and Cyanogenmod 12.1 "Cellular network not available"

Careful if you're in the Mid West and want to customize a 2015 Moto G. I have had great success with previous variants, but this one (XT1548) won't get back on the US Cellular network. Tried a few nightlies and the release version. No bars show, the status message reads: "Emergency calls only - U.S. Cellular", and when choosing US Cellular as the network operator it times out with: "Can't connect to this network right now. Try again later."
I found this post and was very optimistic that setting the Access Point Name manually would help, but I am unable to actually save the full APN. I can save it after entering the name & APN fields, and several more fields, but at some point when I enter all the data on that page and click Save, the new APN disappears.
I called U.S. Cellular's support number (888) 944-9400 and level two support was able to provide my MIN number but disavowed any knowledge of the remaining APN settings. When they understood that the phone was rooted I was read a dismissal and wished good luck. I tried entering the APN now with the correct MIN but again it deletes itself when I click Save.
I am going to try flashing stock since I need a phone. If anyone can confirm or deny the APN settings from the linked post I'd really appreciate it. And if there's some secret to clicking Save, I'd love to know that too!
Also, maybe it's because it's searching for a signal but the drain on the battery seems much higher than the stock ROM. It went down 25% in just an hour or so of trying to resolve this issue.
# Update:
It could be that the network type is incorrect. When I connect to adb, the prompt says "[email protected]_cdma:/ # ". But the service I use is LTE.
pushing APN via ADB
If someone adventurous is interested in pursuing this, it may be possible to shoehorn the APN settings in using ADB:

Please post back if you have success with this!
@loadcode Actually CM 12.1 wasn't tested on US Cellular XT1548, no one had this variant in those days. Try unofficial CM 13, if it works (I'm pretty sure it does) I'll port the fixes to CM 12.1 too
Thanks for the reply! I'm down for that! Where can I find the 13 download?
I did find this but the cellular still doesn't connect. It seems to try, and displays the SIM card icon next to US Cellular (only when I set the Preferred network type to 1g), but continues with the previously-mentioned symptoms.
Any other ideas? I didn't make a backup before jumping in. Does anyone have the original firmware that I could flash back on this device?

@Alberto97 Is it possible for someone to edit the known issues page for the Osprey to make other US Cellular users aware of this? This would have saved me a more-stressful-than-necessary holiday.
I think I found the original firmware, so all might not be lost.
Thanks for your work on this!

I have the virgin mobile variant.
It is also the same model as you. XT1548.
I along with others struggled to get custom ROMs to connect. But thanks to Alberto, it is now working
Try this
Flash Alberto's cm13 12-24 build from the site you linked above.
Once it boots, go to settings and click cellular networks.
Then click CDMA subscription.
If NV is selected, that is probably your problem.
Change to RUIM and reboot.
You may still need to add your APN settings, but maybe not.
Try it out. You just need to try a few things, I'm sure you will be up and running soon.

@hossman, thank you very much for the encouragement and the suggestions. I'd love to have your confidence with this but I've tried many different combinations of the APN, Service Provider & Preferred Network Type and nothing has been the magic US Cellular desires.
Like Alberto said, apparently no devs tested it on the US Cellular network.
If it'll help I could try to provide testing results but I'm also really eager to have a phone again. Even if I could use my SIM card in my old phone for now that'd be acceptable, but for some reason it doesn't work in the 2014 version. (worked fine in my 3rd gen until flashing Cyanogenmod, so I don't think the SIM is bad.)
If it helps with development, here's a log of the network join attempt:

The funny thing is I have had my carrier come up us cellular many times while trying to establish virgin mobile status
Sorry I did return it to stock. A (possibly relevant?) observation is that with the stock firmware, I have the option to toggle the CDMA roaming mode between home & auto. With the non-stock ROMs this was not listed.
For my reference if I attempt this again, and anyone else on US Cellular, here's the working APN settings from the device after I reverted to the original working firmware. All categories are 'Not set' unless otherwise listed here (even username & password):
APN Name (I assume this could be anything...): U.S Cellular
APN: usccinternet
MMSC: http://mmsc1.uscc.net/mmsc/MMS
MCC: 311
MNC: 580
APN type: default,mms,dun,hipri,fota
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN enable/disable: APN enabled
Bearer: LTE
MVNO type: None
Don't get discouraged.
If you want to try again, feel free to pm me and I can try to help...no promises but I'll try..
We're online with the 2/6 build of Marshmallow! I did have to manually launch the Cellular settings app and manually enable/click on "LTE" and it came online immediately! WOOT!

APN issue on CM7

Hello, I am trying to use D2G on the Ting's GSM network (which is T-mobile's network). I am running the cyanogenmod 7 rom (with gingerbread kernel, I think).
I followed band unlock procedures here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l15c0hxwQFAh1e1ewVMe3QUy4d1Laa51C2WCmBizSxA/edit
After putting in the sim card from Ting, it connects to T-mobile's network and I am able to make calls and texts, which is great.
However, I am unable to use data over the network. Ting has its own apn settings, which I have tried to enter. But after I add the apn in apn settings, the page remains blank and I am unable to select the apn that I have added.
To get around this, I have tried replacing /system/etc/apns-conf.xml with one I created myself with Ting's info, reset apn to default and reboot. Unfortunately, the phone still isn't connecting to data, and the apn page in settings remains blank.
So does anyone know what I should do? Would flashing a different rom help, is this a cyanogenmod issue?
Thanks
