Ghostclicks (especially at charging) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
my girlfriend's Nexus 5 shows a lot of ghostclicks for the last weeks. Funnily enough usually at evening and especially when the device is charging. It's impossible to handle something and the only solution to operate normal is a reboot. A few minutes later, the crazy ghostclicking starts again.
The Nexus 5 is running original, unmodified and non-rooted Marshmallow, but the problem appeared already under Lollipop.
If this is caused by faulty hardware, why it happens usually toward evening. And what has it to do with charging? Or simply hazard?
Regards
Kay

Try a different charger. And as weird as it sounds try a different plug socket if you always use the same one for charging

I have had similar issues before. Read someone's post in this forum, it's due to faulty usb cable which causes some current leak, and explained why I felt a bit of electric shock feeling while touching the screen with the phone charging. Changed the cable and problem went away

Thanks for the responses. I wil try these advices.

Actually the charger was the culprit. With another charger and USB-cable the ghostclicks are gone.
Thank you very much for the useful responses.
P.S.: I will measure the faulty charger, maybe the cause is obvious, then I will post the results here.

[Q] [Q Why is my charger taking forever?

This is my first post on xda, but I figured y'all could tell me more than the people at Samsung could. Long story short, my phone charges, but it takes forever. My girlfriends began doing it about a week ago and she's on completely stock, touchwiz rom. (she's not that great with computers) I, however am on cyanogenmod 11 and it's been working great. I have no idea why it won't charge. Please help! It drives me crazy.
I recently had the same problem. Try using a different charger and see if that makes a difference. Mine connected to the computer ok, just took forever to charge. My problem was solved by replacing only the samsung usb wire with one I purchased from monoprice. Best part is they have a great warranty.
I had a very similar situation. Cable appeared to work fine and then suddenly had issue charging. The phone would recognize it as a charger, but by morning it was either not fully charger, or worse yet shut down. Simply changing the cable proved the older one was just shot ....

[Q] Nexus 5 charging only when it is turned off

Hey there!
My Nexus 5, after updating it to 4.4.3, is having a issue: the device is charging only when it is turned off. When I turn the phone on, while charging, it will remain charging. But if I connect the charger, when the phone is already turned on, it will not charge.
I have tested 2 different cables, same issue.
Is anyone else having the same problem? How to fix it?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Just for clarification: I'm using Kit Kat 4.4.3, rooted, Xposed.
what are you charging from? ac or pc?
AC!

Another question, are you using the stock wall wart? Some aftermarket chargers don't put out enough amperage. Another possibility is that you've got some rogue processes keeping your phone awake so it's using battery as quickly (or quicker) than it can take in a charge.
I'm using the AC charger that came with my Nexus 5.
Updated to 4.4.4. Problem not solved.
I think it might be a hardware issue. I have the same problem with my pebble. I have tried multiple cables/chargers and it only charges when it's off. When it's on I get the charging notification but it doesn't actually charge
Nothing. The devide is still charging only when it is turned off.
Having the same issue since update 2 weeks ago. Already wiped phone and problem still exist. Start to think it's hardware but tried 2 different charger same issue.
So guys I am almost the same problem since this morning. I went on a 3 day trip to the Netherlands on Friday and charged my phone in the car for the last time on friday. I died on me this morning. While I was on the way back today and my N5 was in it's last percents of battery I noticed it wouldnt charge anymore. I thought fastcharging might have killed my car radio. Now back home I tried to charge it. For some reason the charging while off screen reapeared as soon as it turned off. Whenn I turned it on again it stopped charging. Tried rebooting multiple times. My phone now only charges while being in Fastboot or Recovery mode. Anybody having any ideas what might have caused this an how to fix this? Cleaning the charger didn't help me.

Hi. Also had this problem a few days now. Alot of headscraching is done
N5 won`t charge when on. Tried my N10 charger, but still the same. With my wireless charger it register the phone when off, but cannot charge it at all. I've also done a factory reset, and even changed the battery. Still no solution. Wondering if the charging port is damaged somehow. It doesn't cost much so maybe I`ll order a new and replace it to. I remember draining the battery more than usual right before this issue acurred. I was hiking, and din`t bring my portable charger. Also it could be some kind of water damage. Had the phone in my pocket all the time, it was not raining, but I got pretty sweaty:-9 Never had any issue with my stock Nexus 5 up till now. Don`t think this i a common problem, when this is the only place I've found others with this issue I`ll order the charging port, keep on searching on forums, and take it from there.
Good luck
I'm having the same problem on my Nexus 5 now as well. When on, it won't charge via micro-usb (via original charger or USB-to-PC), nor will it charge wirelessly. When turned completely off, it charges, but at GREATLY GREATLY reduced speed. It seems to be stuck in a loop as it it's just been plugged in. It cycles continuously through the lightning-bolt battery image, followed by the charge percentage graphic. The screen blinks, then it starts again. I suspect that it only charges for a moment or two before each reset. For example, it only charged about 20% over the span of six hours last night.
I've tried four chargers and four USB cables, and of course both wireless and wired charging. It's something with the hardware I suspect.
Anyone have any suggestions? It looks the the factory wipe upthread didn't help...
Charging spare part
I am having same problem too. I'm guessing it's because of water damage. Where did you find the charging part? I'm thinking of ordering one for myself to see if the problem is fixed!

Having the same problem now too. Won't Qi or USB charge from OEM charger and cable while powered on.
Appears to be charging fine while powered off.
Did anyone come up with a resolution?

Phone not charging [need help ASAP]

My phone is not charging sometimes and when it is, it charges at about 1% every 15 minutes. I've tried many known working chargers and cables so rule that out. I switched custom ROMs because of this issue. and a few days in it began to happen again. What are some things that could be causing this?
Im desperate! really, it's only phone for communication. My last resort is back to stock but I really like my setup now and battery is amazing. Please help lol
If the same thing happens with several known working chargers and cables, then likely you have a hardware issue with the phone itself.
(On my first Nexus 5, the charging port came slightly loose and would only charge with the cable at a very specific angle. Got it replaced when it was still under warranty)
To be absolutely sure it's not the rom or kernel or some strange mod, make a nandroid backup, copy it to pc, then go fully back to stock. See if it charges properly.
Try out apps like Ampere etc which display the charging rate. Your battery might be dead or as mentioned in the above post
Just spent a whole day doing all that stuff, It's def the phone :'( It's absolutely heartbreaking since I don't have money to fix it......... Uuuuughh...
charging was wonky, been checking it constantly

Nexus 5 won't charge the battery, shows -30degrees and cold temp

Hey All,
i have a nexus 5 running android 5.1.1, which recently i have encountered some battery issues, the battery drained very fast (6-7 hours from 100% to 0%).
but then, it stopped charging the battery, no matter what i changed - nothing worked! (new cables, different chargers and so on).
yesterday i have bought a new battery and replaced the original faulty battery, but nothing is changed, the new battery won't charge.
i tried to charge it when the nexus is on or off, doesn't matter, same result...
i am very frustrated from the situation, and basically can not use the nexus any more..
one more thing, i tried also google suggestion (when the cell is off, to press power+volume buttons, and then scrolling down to shut down and inserting the charger - >didn't work for me).
i tried to upgrade to Marshmallow (6.0.1) but there is not enough battery power to allow it...
when i dial *#*#INFO#*#*, and check the battery properties,
why the temp is always -30 degrees for the two batteries?
Is it a sensor issue?
do you have any suggestion?
Thanks!
anyone?
i will really appreciate your suggestion..
Connect the phone to a Windows machine and look to see if any new devices appear in Device Manager.
Thanks for the reply.
I connected the nexus to my laptop, it was recognized and i could reach the storage, but the battery remained the same, not charging ..
So the nexus 5 appears in Windows explorer? Possible charging port problem?

well, maybe. havn't tried it so far..
have you encountered this issue of wrong temp alert of -30 degrees for other users ?
and replacing the charging port solved it?
I haven't encountered the battery temp issue.
Since the old and new battery behave the same way, there wouldn't be too many culprits which is why I mentioned the USB charging port. Has the ever been dropped? Any way you could test the batteries in another phone?
the problem was resolved!!!
finally, after so many hours trying to make it work, i encountered a thread here in XDA which explains that the sensor is located on the cable connecting the battery to the motherboard.
Apparently it was a bit loose, so i put something above the connection and put the cover tightly.
then, the temp was reasonable again and my nexus was coming back to live!

Hey, I have the same same problem , what did you do to fix it? I've been almost a year without using my nexus because it only works when it's plugged. Can you tell me what thread did you read or the solution? Thank you
See my last post....
Anyway, The problem was at the connection port of the battery - when you remove the nexus cover, you will see that the battery is connected by a connector with 9-10 pins to the board. Apparently those pins weren't connected properly and were loose, so I put something from above to make some pressure on the connector, then screw back everything and close the cover. Since then, my nexus is working great!
I hope it will work the same for you...

Started to have charging issues occasionally

Hi, my U11 started to have slow charging issues occasionally. Sometimes I have to unplug and plug in again a few times to have it charged properly. What should I do? Thank you!

This was also happening to mine and I cleaned the charging port with a qtip and alcohol. I flattened the qtip first so it would fit up inside, just be careful that the tip does not have loose cotton. Hth
I had similar issues and also my HTC USBC headphones stopped working. I ordered a new charging port and did it myself. It wasn't too bad. hardest part was taking the back off.
HOWEVER. I have a new issue after the phone worked fine for months after doing that. I recently got a message onscreen that the charging is causing a problem and to disconnect the charger immediately. So I do. Mind you this is the same chargers I've been using for 2 years. Now, the phone WILL NOT charge with ANY charger while it has battery. Once the battery dies, it will charge back up to 100%. This has happened 3x in a row over the past 3 days. Has anyone ever experienced this?
I should say, one of the chargers I got new and it went into the USB C port a little funny. If you've ever used different chargers you might know what I mean. However, it supported quick charge and worked months before one of my other main chargers stopped working, and then a few weeks later I got the above message. Anyone have this happen to them?

That's scary, do you think it could be the replacement charging port failing again?
I tried to clean it with alcohol, seems better at first but then back to the same. I read somewhere to use a business card to try to take out any lint/dirt whatever, I did take out some dirt, but then now the charging port can't hold the cable tight, it's kind of loose. I ordered a charging port and a battery (looks like easy swap once the back is open), wish me luck.

Dont forget to ground yourself before disassembly, I learned the hardway. Also it helps to use a hair dryer to soften the glue that holds the back and battery in place!! Hth

OK, so the charging port managed to come Sat morning before I had to take off for an overnight trip. In anticipation of that, I began taking off the back before the charging port arrived. It was really the hardest part of the whole fix, but I still managed to take it off in 15 or 20 mins... not too bad. Then the part came and the swap was pretty straightforward. It's charging properly now, yay!
I also ordered a battery (from a different seller though) and it is only coming today. So I didn't glue the back yet. The original battery was not terrible, but taking the chance to replace it.
OK, swapped out the battery as well, will have to see how good it is. Accubattery reports my original battery as around 1800mah.
