Getting new S6, confused if root/ROMable? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

So... I'm about to get a new S6 for Verizon. There's pretty limited info in this thread, but a lot of it seems like a new S6(as of 10/01/2015) isn't rootable/ROMable because of the most recent OTA that I would assume would be on a phone bought now. Is that correct? If not can someone point me to threads that show how to root and get a custom recovery on?
Thanks,
Craig

Correct. You will not be able to root the new s6 unfortunately. You can likely buy one on swappa that hasn't been updated and is running fireflash or whatever.

.....unless you get lucky and get a phone with OC3 or OE2. Verizon just sent me a replacement S6 (was having major BT issues) and I got lucky enough to get one on OC3. S6 + OE2 + root + greenify = me happy

Were you able to get a new S6 from Verizon with either OC3 or OE2, if so which one? I am interested in getting it too, but it's a no go if root is not possible.

I'm worried that if I get a new S6 from verizon it will auto-update to 5.1.1 OG5 during the initial setup wizard/process. Can you explain how you stopped yours from updating to OE2 and OG5? Thanks in advance

The device won't auto-update itself without consent from the user. My replacement came with OC3, so I pulled down OE2 (from the web) and pushed that to the phone using ODIN. Once that was done, I applied root which prevents the phone from receiving OTA updates.

Thanks for the info! I went in to a verizon the other day and their answers were all over the place; it's amazing how they know so little about the devices they spend all day selling, servicing. They tried to tell me that a mandatory update came out Friday "for all verizon android phones" and the play store wouldn't work if it wasn't updated to it (though they told me also that the user has no choice to reject updates - lol)

I got my s6 from someone on swappa and for some reason, once I first booted and was doing initial setup, the phone automatically rebooted into update mode. As soon as it was back up and running, the build version was too new to root and the bootloader version had been updated too. I don't know why it did this for me, I was really tempted to hard reboot while it was in update mode to prevent it because I really wanted to root, but I was even more worried about bricking the phone. I figure maybe the guy who sold it to me had already downloaded the update but did not run it, and after doing a factory reset maybe the phone was somehow set to auto-execute the update...

Knox has nothing to do with why you're not getting the update. If you want it now, go to sammobile.com and download the full tar file for nk4 and install with Odin. This will update your phone and all settings and data will still be intact. If you don't want to do that, you will just have to wait until Sprint releases the update to your serial number.

thanks, thats what sprint, samsung and google said.they all ran me around to each other and said my phone doesnt need an update, but the thing is i have 6 co workers with the same sprint s5 at my dealership.we get a discount through sprint.4 are older than mine and 2 are newer and all have gotten the update and security updates as well.i'm the only one who rooted their phone,so i'm not holding my breath that the ota update is gonna come through.

I rooted mine with Towelroot and then Deleted it. I can"t do the OTA for the 4.4.4. I Tried with the KIES and still no avail. So all I need to do is download the Tar file and it should work?
When i restored mine with kies3. The device status changed from custom to offical. Maybe you modded files that arent restored with kies?i did factory restore and cache wipe before kies.

Xt1541 ota

I've got a XT1541 8GB with LPI23.72-22 firmware Spain retail version. I've seen the retail firmware in the firmware's post but i haven't got the ota just yet. Has anyone with this device got the OTA? Is there any other way to install it? Downloading from motorla website and flashing maybe? Im on stock unrooted.
Also i would like to know if I stay on stock recovery and root the phone, will unrooting it before updating be enough to capture ota's without any problem? And then root again by temporarily boot into twrp?
Thanks for the help.
I have a different model but root won't stop you from downloading and capturing the OTA. I was able to capture the OTA even though I was rooted and updated while rooted. To be on the safe side, it would probably be best to unroot though. Before I rebooted after the OTA, I went into the cache and saved a copy of the OTA.

So as long as i keep stock recovery and I unroot before updating i wont have any truble right?
Is motorola sending the OTA or my carrier? Because i got the unlocked phone on amazon and my carrier is not selling phones or giving them with a contract.
Anyway i think im gonna go for cyanogenmod as soon as it gets official support.

Right, you shouldn't have any problems. Motorola will be sending out the update, not your carrier. You probably wouldn't have any trouble updating while rooted, but to be on the safe side it wouldn't hurt. You'll have to root again after the update anyway, so you may as well un-root before the update.

bought phone from becetech wont update firmware

im sorry if this is in the wrong section but ,ok so i bought an open box galaxy s6 from becetech online and it would not let me update the firmware past 5.1.1 which made me a bit suss, downloaded root checker app and it came too me rooted. apart from not being able to update the firmware past 5.1.1 as far as im aware the phone has no issues and works perfectly fine. i downloaded the *samsung* phone info app, in general under manufacturer it says Samsung/verizon so im assuming that is part of the reason they rooted the phone as it needed to be unlocked from verizon to be refurbished? so what i want to know is how do i find out exactly what becetech have done to the phone and is there an easy way for me to update the firmware to nougat or at least marshmallow without stuffing the phone, like i said the phones running fine its just really bugging me not being to update. obviously im not able to work it out myself but i can follow instructions so any help from someone would be greatly appreciated so thank you in advance.

Could someone with a bit more knowledge please tell me if the reason I can't update the firmware is because the firmware csc is TGY when I'm in Australia or just because it's rooted or what? I'm getting no answers from the company who I bought it off

Are you trying to update via the phone update feature? If so this won't work as rooting disabled the ability Update using ota
First I tried OTA then downloaded samsung smart switch and gave that a go both no good. What I want to know is, if they had to root the phone to refurbish it will it brick it if I try to update? Won't it reset all the company I bought it off has done to it to refurbish it? Which I'm guessing is quite a process as when I look at the open source licenses there's a long list of files that have been changed. It just sucks that it's locked to a three year old version of the firmware that I'm worried apps will start to stop supporting in the near future? Apart from that I can not fault the phone there's been no problems, maybe I'm asking a bit much for a $400 phone?

From what I can tell you have a g920v variant if the phone Shows Verizon but the sure fire way to know what variant you have is turn the phone off once off hold home-power-volume down, this will take you to download mode but should tell you your variant. You don't need to root a phone to refurbish It, you can flash Stock firmwares via Odin. I really don't know why they would have Rooted It tbh, you'd need to contact them, but I know for sure you can manually download the latest Verizon firmware and the phone should work. Maybe they Rooted it as part of making it network unlocked, o really can't say
Ok I tried that and a bright blue screen came up warning about custom OS then press up volume for download and down volume for reset? I just pressed down as there was no other info on the screen but it does say it's a sm-g920v in the settings as well as the root checker app. Another thing was I did ring samsung support gave them the serial number and IMEI and they said an authorized modification had been done on the phone but could offer no other support as it wasn't an Australian phone. I'll keep trying to get some info out of the company I bought it off and try to sort it out thanks for your help :good:

[ATT] My phone is still on the April Security Update

I have tried multiple times checking for updates over the past 2 weeks and my phone won't update. Is there a way to manually update? Like through my PC or something?
I would check to see if you have any disabled apps. I have done it numerous times, and have to re-enable them for updates to take.
ATT Phone + Updates
In my own experience, ATT usually takes a while until they release an update. I used to have a Note5 (locked to ATT) and it took FOREVER to get Android Nougat. When I finally got the update, Google announced that they were starting to develop Android Oxygen . I heard that the Samsung representatives @ Best Buy can help with installing updates manually but I cannot confirm this as I have never done it myself. If you want, you can call Best Buy to confirm if they can do this.
Hope this helps!
Are you on AT&T network? or are you using other provider?
You can only get OTA update through AT&T DM server.
Side loading AT&T update can reset your data.

I would backup and factory reset your phone. If you're savvy on flashing rom, you can directly update with odin or using SD card method.
if that doesn't work. I'd goto the Samsung experience center inside Bestbuy store.
or you can visit AT&T corporate store for help.
Yes we can help with updates at Best Buy. We use smart tool to update the phone. Just make sure you backup your device. Att is always the worst when it comes to update time and updates working correctly.
I work at Samsung and have to deal with att updates all the damn time.
You can install BK and force stop the Software Updater process that runs in the background. Then reboot and try updating again. That worked for me.

Updating/Flashing my S8+ from Verizon (Carrier Unlocked)

Solved
Used patched version of odin to flash the samsung unlocked firmware (G955U1) from the firmware servers. No more Verizon Splashscreen and spay/bixby work fine
I've been using android devices all my life and have rooted every single device I've owned in the past (probably 4-5 devices). I know the risks and I know how to flash my device and such but I got my S8+ from verizon about 3 months ago before the international unlocked version was released. I only bought it from verizon because their phones are carrier unlocked by default. I use google's project fi.
Verizon is somewhat good with bloatware I can disable or uninstall all of their applications and I haven't found my device to be slowed or burdened by their addons so I never felt the need to root my device which was nice but I got the Bixby update today and I cannot use it unless I update my system software. Tried to update it and it attempts to connect via verizon and ultimately fails saying it cannot connect to the update server. I expected this -- I think it's due to me not using verizon and not having the phone registered with their service.
Want to use Bixby and also would like to flash a stock updated (latest stock version) ROM as I don't care for any new features or custom ROMs because this phone is perfect as it is so far.
Phone software/model specs:
model is SAMSUNG-SM-G955U
kernel version 4.4.16 march 11th, 2017
sev 8.1
android 7.0
aspv march 1st, 2017
knox 2.8
If I follow my usual rooting route properly is it safe to root my phone? Asking because S8+ root is relatively new. I won't ever sell the phone so I don't care if the warranty goes void or something like that.
Essentially looking to turn my Verizon version into a completely US unlocked phone with a stock clean ROM. Is there any possible way I can perform this and still be able to use Samsung Pay? Not a necessity but I do enjoy it.

Alright, If I flash the newest version of the samsung firmware onto my device (force update it) will SPay and Bixby still work? And my Knox will be fine?
Both should be intact and working as far as my knowledge goes Bixby for sure spay shouldn't be affected. Let me get this straight you have a Verizon s8+ flashing the unlocked firmware correct?

I have the S8+ G955U. It's verzion and has the ****ty verzion startup screen and sound it's just annoying. I really want to use Bixby voice as I just got the update from samsung but it says I have to have the newest samsung firmware to use it. I cannot update my phone normally because I don't use verizon I use google fi. So I want to try to flash the standard US carrier unlocked firmware onto my phone from sammobile (not the verizon variant). Is this safe?
the firmware list I'm choosing from: (spaces added so because account is not old enough to post links)
www . sammobile . com/firmwares/galaxy-s8/SM-G955U/
Which one on that list should I use? Obviously I'd choose the first one which is the Verizon firmware but I really would like to just have pure Samsung unlocked stock firmware so I don't have verizon apps & the verizon startup screen.
That's a tough decision I too have a Verizon s8 and it was plagued with the bloat and the splash screen when booting but I used a package disabler to get rid of many if the unwanted and unnecessary packages I didn't like as for using Bixby and getting rid of the splash screen.... It is safe to flash unlocked firmware many people have done this and there is a thread here on xda somewhere all about carrier switching the s8+ to the unlocked firm I could find it if you'd like?

If you could get that thread for me that'd be perfect. Thanks for the help. Really wishing I waited the extra 3 weeks and bought the unlocked version instead.
Updating because I was able to solve it myself. I used a patched version of Odin to bypass the model mismatch error and flashed a new system image and csc (G955U1 model image) that wasn't for my G955U Verizon model.
Bixby works, KNOX is fine, SPay is solid. Verizon splash screen is gone and the phone (from the settings point of view) has no carrier and is fully unlocked and void of bloatware.
