trying to use a Japanese sim in on originally USA galaxy s5 - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I came to Japan after speaking0 to sprint about the possibility of using a Japanese SIM card in my phone. They said there'd be no problems I'll just have to unlock the phone before I left which was a completely doable thing by myself without their help. Now once I set up the Japanese sim I can make calls and text but have no access to LTE on my phone. Whenever I'm outside of Wi-Fi range I get a message saying mobile data connection could not be established LTE: ESM - 30 EMM - X I've called Sprint from Japan and tried to resolve the issue, they have walk me through the same steps three different times assuring me that the phone is unlocked on their end and never with a new result. Is there something that I missing it I need to address before I can connect for mobile data connection in Japan with this USA phone.

[Q] Network problems with I9000 bought in Singapore, using in Canada

Hi everyone,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 (16gb) in Singapore and was using it fine on Singtel's network (signed a contract with them). Now I have moved back to Canada and brought my phone with me assuming that all would be ok to use it with the network here. However I'm having big problems with this one network I just signed up with (Virgin Mobile).
85% of the time I cannot connect to it: voice calls and SMSing won't work nor will the data work on it, the only thing it says is "Emergency calls only". Then at other times everything will seem to connect and work fine - I can make calls and use data.
Virgin Mobile will not support me much because they're thinking it's the phone's problem, if I use the phone they gave me (a lower-end model) it works fine.
Here are some details of my phone:
Firmware version
2 2
Baseband version
I9000DXJPA
Kernel version
2 6 32 9
root (at) SE-S604 #1
Build number
FROYO DXJPA
If I check out the status, it usually says this:
Network
Unknown (switches to VIRGIN when it does work)
Mobile network type
UMTS (switches between that and HSDPA and GPRS)
Service state
Out of service
Mobile network state
Disconnected (switches to connected when working, and even when it's not working sometimes)
I have Network mode set to auto mode (GSM/WCDMA). I've tried to switch it to GSM only but that didn't seem to change anything.
I'm wondering if there's some kind of configuration settings I still need to do with the phone? I'm also wondering if it is the network I'm with right now? Virgin Mobile isn't one of the bigger telcom companies here and I'm thinking that if I switch to one of the bigger telcoms, will it work better?
Something else to add - before I signed up with Virgin I was using my phone with a pre-paid service (called Chatr) for voice only and it was working fine.
I'm sure this phone can support the GSM frequencies here.. can't it?
I also still have the Singtel customizations on the phone. Will it help if I remove it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot!

Nexus S roaming problem with ICS

Hi,
I have a Nexus S I9023 with baseband I9023XXKI1
Provider is Telenet in Belgium, which is a full MVNO with its own MNC
When running any Gingerbread version, the phone works fine when going out of the country, and returning.
But with any ICS rom (stock or CyanogenMod) the phone will not be able to connect to any international providers, when my providers SIM is installed. But when I stick my providers SIM into another phone the SIM will switch over, after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and I can roam to any other international provider without problems, but the phone will not switch back to my own provider when I get back into the country. At this point I again have to put the Telenet SIM into another phone to force it out of roaming mode after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and it works again on my own provider.
I also tried with another Telenet SIM and had the exact same problem, so it is not a problem with the specific SIM itself. But when I stick in a non-Telenet SIM it does switch to roaming and non-roaming without problems. So it clearly is a combination of the ICS ROM with the Telenet SIM.
The only other thing I found is that the MNC code in apns-conf.xml is wrong for Telenet. It is listed as MNC=10 which used to be correct until sometime last year when everyone was issued a new SIM with MNC=05. But with a custom APN setup mobile data works fine.
If anyone has any idea how I could solve this issue, I would love to hear about it!
Cant Activate/Deactivate International Call Roaming on Nexus S.
Hi,
Same issue here, mine is Nexus S, running ICS 4.0.4, baseband version I9020XXKI1. I am not able to make calls in roaming. I spoke to my provider (O2 Germany) and they say that, I have to deactivate the lock (Lock to activate roaming). I haven't found any way to unlock this service. I have not tried what the OP has mentioned in his post (i.e., to put the sim into another phone and then try back in Nexus S). But I would like to know, how can I Activate or Deactivate the roaming lock ??
Thanks,
Cheers!!

The only roaming feature you can enable is for Data. This has no effect on roaming for normal phone usage.
You can change this setting under "System Settings" -> "More..." (under Wireless & Networks) -> "Mobile Networks"
Here you will find a "Data roaming" option, and possibly a "National data roaming" option
I have a Desire Z with Android 4.0.4 and Telenet for the cellphone also. I noticed I have to activate the romaing in Belgium to have the data connection which is strange as I'm in Belgium. Now I hear that they can be issues calling/sending sms abroad... I'll see when I'll be in Croatia.
I activated for the moment all the option (data roaming, national roaming) for the moment, nothing more strange than having the romaing activated and the 'R' in the network signal.
National Roaming seems to be needed on some phones, since the Telenet SIM swap last year to get a data connection in Belgium. On my own Nexus S phone I don't have the problem. But on my wife's SE Xperia Mini Pro (2011 model) with stock Android 2.3.4 it does have this issue.
The old sim used MNC=10, while the new SIM uses MNC=05 and it seems that some phones have some kind of issue with that.
MNC is the Mobile Network Code, which together with the MCC (Mobile Country Code) forms a identifier per provider.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code
I narrowed down the issue somewhat.
Basically my prior workaround that the SIM needed to be swapped to another phone to force the network to connect was false.
What actually needs to happen to force the phone to enter or exit roaming is to pull the battery.
Rebooting the phone, or shutting it down and rebooting (cold boot) does not make a difference, the battery needs to be pulled and then the phone will switch networks.
I found this by accident, because I was out of the country and it was as normal refusing to switch to roaming mode. Then the battery died and I connected power to the phone and booted it, and it suddenly connected to a foreign provider in roaming mode.
Getting back to Belgium, it again refused to switch back, so I verified it by just pulling out the battery and putting it back and the phone successfully was able to connect to Telenet again.
In other words, some component needs to be reset for it to successfully switch to roaming and back. This component does not get turned off when the phone is turned off, so the battery needs to be pulled.

[Q] Red Pocket data only for mobile devices APN settings (t-mobile mvno)

I received a micro sim ordered from Red Pocket for their data only prepaid plan for mobile devices.($10 for 1gb for 30 days, $30 for 3gb for 30 days, $50 for 5 gb for 30 days. After 3 and 5 gb limits then unlimited data with reduced speed on those 2 plans). That service use their GSMT (tmobile) sim card. I have a Pantech Element (tablet 4GLTE from at&t, sim unlocked). The issue is the instructions RP gave me was to create a new 'access point name', write 'Red Pocket' at 'NAME' and 'wholesale' at 'APN'. My tablet shows strong signal, identifies it as 'RED POCKET', but when I open a browser or other aplication that requires data It keeps connecting and disconnecting. I do a scan, selected 'T-mobile', and the browser went to 'tmobile' page that shows that my device was not supported. So, I think the 'unlock' worked.
My question is, is it correct the APN setting RP gave me? It's my first time I work on something like this. And everytime I call they tell me to change something at apn setting from 'not set' to 'default', and from 'default' to 'not set'. I really want that service to work. I don't want to has to carry another device to access internet having a tablet that is 4glte gsm.
If anybody has information abbout correct APN settings for Red Pocket (tmo mvno) mobile data for devices (no voice) I will really appreciate it.
Thank you.
(appologize for my english. It's not my first language)

i have a similar issue. posted in a old dead thread: " anyone using red pocket gsmt data only plan? it uses t-mobile 4g, my phone shows all signal and 4g, but wont download anything, any app that use internet is not connecting, their reps are helpless'

HTC U11, Dual Sim, unlocked, Mobile data is not working in T-Mobile, ATT networks.

Hi.
I have HTC U11, Dual Sim, the International version that I bought from China.
After that, I have changed the CID for it on the Taiwan version.
Currently, it is:
HTC_U-3u
Android 9
Software number 3.22.709.2
Rooted, not custom rom.
I have been used it with several MVNOs (Mint, Hello mobile) that are working on T-Mobile network for the last 1.5 years. Currently, I use Hello mobile.
All worked fine (4g, voice, text, data) until last week.
From the last week, Mobile data is not working anymore. It always shows as "Disabled" when I try to enable it, and no icon in the status bar. Meanwhile, voice and text are working fine.
I didn't do any system updates or new soft installation on my phone.
I tried to reset network data, reboot, checked with support (no issues with my number), checked APN with t-mobile recommended, changed mode on 3g, 2g, and without success, mobile data is not working.
I tried to put my sim card in another phone that I bought here in the US and the mobile data is working fine there, I see the LTE icon, and so on.
Also, I checked my phone with a sim card from ATT, and the same issue, voice, and text are ok and no mobile data.
The Signal Spy app shows me that the phone connected to Band 4 (1700). I checked T-Mobile and ATT websites and see that this Band in the list of supported 4g bands.
Also, I checked the compatibility by IMEI on websites and it showed me that only WiFI-Calling and VolTa will not work on my phone, but common 4g data is supported.
So seems all should be work fine but it is not. I found some posts on Reddit that T-Mobile wanted to change some Bands from 4g to 5g, but I don't know if it is the root of my issue.
Does anyone have this issue with this phone in the US on T-Mobile?
I don't know what it was but today Mobile Data started to work, the whole past week I had no mobile data connection.

Question docomo A53 voice network connection problem #APN

Weird issue...
Brand-new A53, docomo-branded (I live in Japan), SIM-unlocked, fully updated (last update: Oct 1). Haven't messed around with it, no root, no nothing.
USIM is from IIJmio, one of the discount MVNOs here, carrier is docomo. USIM works just fine in my old Galaxy S9.
The A53 comes with a pre-installed APN for docomo (spmode.ne.jp). To get IIJmio to work, naturally I need to set up their APN, which I've done. Same as with the S9 I also have. Problem is that every time I (re)start the phone, mobile data works but voice doesn't. Can't dial out, can't receive calls. BUT, if I go to the APN settings, switch from IIJ to docomo for a second and then back, voice works once more.
Any ideas as to what might cause this, and how to get around it?
