Active notifications is a HUGE battery drainer - X Style (Pure) General

Specially if you get a lot of texts, mine is like nonstop on.
I turned it off today and I'm at 58% on my bday, so I'm getting like a million texts and calls, where it's usually like 30-40 with this level of activity.
(stealth it's my bday)

I turned off Moto and Ambient Display and my battery life is now incredible.. I've been off the charger since 7 AM (roughly 9 hours), and I'm at 85%. I'd normally be at 65-70 by now...

I turn on the phone to check what notifications I have (and listen to the different notification tones for different accounts)... I have too many email accounts (3 Gmail, 2 Exchange, and 1 POP) and Moto Display never quite grasped what I considered important to display... So it was being pretty useless..

The only reason I don't have Moto Display off on my phone is because if I have Ambient Display or none sometime this weird blue graphical glitch pops up for a fraction of the second when I press the power button. I'll try to see if I can capture a screen shot.

Is it not possible to disable what is and isnt displayed by moto active display?
Or is it just any notifications that the user has enabled?

Good God people why does everyone turn off all the nice stuff Moto gives us just to save an hour or two on battery??
Why did you buy the phone in the first place just to turn stuff off?

I agree, what's the use of buying the mxp if you are not going to use all of the features.

Because most of it is redundant garbage people don't use and buy these phones due to the fact that they are about as pure android as you can get with the form factor they desire and at a price they want to pay. Those are far bigger selling points for many that the gimmicks Motorola has so inefficiently made part of the software.
Most of the manufacturer added "features" are garbage. In fact, IMO, they are all garbage with the exception of Samsungs Mutli view.

Plenty of Samsung phones out there for the sheep to buy and the garbage Sammy has to offer. It's all about choice.
Don't poo poo our decision to buy Moto.
Me, I like the "garbage" Moto has to offer.

Buying a new Nexus is a right of passage for some. If you need to do it, nothing else will suffice. In my opinion the Moto X nailed it. 'll be watching the Nexus but I am very happy with the XPE.

Not only is the large nexus going to be expensive it won't have a SD card and the maker has dubious ties that makes me hesitant to buy anything from them.
So how about not worring about people uninstalling apps and let them use their phones how they want to just like you do. If the extra 30% battery loss is worth the app for you then by all means no one is saying you should stop using it. Same token, don't give people crap for uninstalling crap ware from the manufacturer.
A good percentage of people and reviews pointed out mediocre to poor battery life. Fortunately there are easy fixes for it by disabling some apps. If you don't want to do that, don't. No one cares. The information is valuable to those looking to maximize battery life.

I use the other Motorola features.. Moto Display (and Ambient Display or the other third party display apps on other ROMs) is useless for me. But the Automatic Meeting/Driving mode and reading of texts is important.
Also, I want a relatively close to stock Android with a uSD Card slot and a decent camera. There aren't any other alternatives at the moment...

Just remember this; Motorola gives you the option to turn the extras that they implement off. If one set of people want to turn it off, what's wrong with that? It's android - one glove will not fit everyone. And that's the beauty of android.
So don't crap on anyone's decision to turn something off that they don't want. The same way someone shouldn't crap on your decision to turn something on. We have options, not only on what phone we buy, but what software we use with it.

1. Near-stock Android with robust update schedule expected over time from Motorola.
2. (Almost) no bloatware from the factory.
3. Water resistant nano coating.
4. Better headphone audio & display than my current phone.
5. SIM unlocked, all-carrier support (US).
6. Bootloader unlock available from Motorola upon request.
7. Straightforward root process with none of the problems of root exploits (see #6 above).
8. USB OTG.
9. Micro SDXC support up to 128GB (probably >128GB, actually).
Um, yeah, that sums up most of the reasons I got the phone "just to turn stuff off". (I didn't pay much attention to the fast charging feature of the SD 808, but after reading about it I'm pretty happy about that too.
Why economize power use?
1. Li-Ion batteries last longer if they are not discharged as deeply in the discharge/charge cycles.
2. If you are responsible for more than just yourself, you just never know when you might suddenly find yourself in a place where you can't charge the phone for more hours or days than you expected.

Just tried the New Sprint Echo - Don't Bother.

Wow, complete fail. I knew I had my doubts about anything made by Kyocera, but I was not prepared for utter cheapness and ugliness of this device. And the screen quality - don't get me started. I felt like I was looking at a Blackberry from 2005.
The dual screen concept is nice and probably will be improved over time. But this first trip out of the barn really is a mule with a broken leg and a bad case of the mange.
If you were tempted to use your EVO trade-up for this device, save your time and money and wait for the EVO 3D.
Right now the only Android MFR's to consider are Motorola and HTC IMHO. Didn't think this device was worth anything anyway
Well OK you can add Samsung to this list
I was looking at this phone when I realized my 2 year was up on April 1st. It seemed interesting but I just knew there wouldn't be any app support for it. I have read a few reviews saying that the hinge, although goofy, is surprisingly strong.
I was going to just wait until the Evo 3D came out and not even get the Evo, but I caved. In a way I'm glad I did though, I have it all rooted and installed C7 on it with Tiamat 3.5.7. I used these forums to customize my hero as well.
Probably sucks now but if Samsung tries it with dual super amoled then it will be great since they are best company at hardware wise when it comes to phones but not software but that is y xda is here

Dual screen cellphones are a great idea. I personally feel they may be the wave of the future just like multimonitor computer setups are so popular now. However, this phone is little more than proof of concept. Sprint will take a bath on this.

Thanks for confirming what I already suspected. I have not had a chance to handle one yet, but the looks alone told me it was gonna be el cheapo. Kind of a shame really. The concept is pretty cool. I don't think it's going to last because of the introduction of flexible LED displays in the near future. Much better if you don't have to have a seam in the middle of your display!

I demo'd this phone in store today, also. Sprint tech was "watching TV" on it at the front counter. Played with it for five minutes:
Hinge has an addicting snap sound to it, as is the whole process of folding/unfolding the phone. Even having a 1GHz Snapdragon, the phone was still laggy (opening apps, scrolling through the drawer). As we all figured, besides the Sprint bloatware, this phone is pretty much AOSP--I don't believe Kyocera ever threw in their own frontend.
Rep was running Sprint TV for roughly twenty minutes, and battery was already down to 78%! Battery percentage indicator is stock, at least. LOL! Kyocera has thrown in an extra battery in the package for a reason.
Screens by themselves are SMALL! We know the specs, but looking at the screen IRL leaves MUCH to be desired. All in all, it's a novelty, at best. You're not getting anything practical out of a dual screen phone unless you ABSOLUTELY need to shave MILLISECONDS off of your time. This phone is a miss for me, which sucks, because I was looking forward to it because my phone upgrade is due in July. EVO 3D, here I come.
My oldest son was buying his finacee an evo while my youngest son and I played the echo...I asked the manager how many they have sold and he said no a one...That was 1:34 pm today.
Within 3 minutes of playing with the echo I was blah....

Critical battery, guess it's been 2 hours, time to change to the other battery :/...
I bought one yesterday to replace my EVO which I have had since launch and had the extended battery for.
I just cannot understand where all the hate for this phone comes from. With the screens open it is nearly tablet sized. I call this phone more of a "tablet crossover", where it does great as a phone and then when needed gives you a ton of room to work on things in near tablet size.
The phone is also pretty small, but thick. Feels good in hand and in pocket and very well built.
Battery life yesterday was fine mostly connected to wifi. Today will be my first day out and about with it.
It has been buttery smooth for me, no stutters or lags. I've already become used to the small black space between the screens and don't even notice it. Not sure on the comment about the screen quality, both displays are superb in my opinion.
Sure, the phone is different than anything we have seen before. So far it has exceeded my expectations and I don't miss the Evo at all. Can't tell you how nice it is to flip the screens together to get some work done and have all the extra space.
A couple other thoughts -
I have mostly used it with apps full screen in tablet mode, and it has worked beautifully for nearly everything I have tried, including apps like Pulse reader.
Simultask works well also, although I haven't found myself using it that much. Was cool when I saw some mails coming in and I was browsing the web, I brought the mail client into one of the screens and continued to browse as I was reviewing mail. Also it's great how the mail client uses both screens to list mail on one screen and review on another.
Camera app is awesome with how it uses both screens.
Pretty much vanilla android 2.2 all the way around. Very nice in that regard.
Thread moved to General.

Actually, I am good at helping people. Perhaps that is why I have 420 thank-you's compared to your 23. If you spent less time attacking me and more time learning enough about Android where you could assist others, maybe you won't look so foolish by comparison next time?

As with any phone, it is a matter of taste. For those who are more into utility and care less about aesthetics, this phone is probably fine. However, I am surprised you don't notice that the image quality on the screen is far inferior to the EVO? Like I said, I am a big fan of THIS IDEA, I'm just not a fan of this phone. Seems more like a proof-of-concept than a finished product.
Glad you like your Echo

Not surprising one bit. This was the last time I ever purchased anything from Kyocera. The lens cover decide to close when you turn the power ON and open when you turn the power OFF...after 2wks of pampering.

Considering a return

I'm really nobody special but just thought I'd post my thoughts here. I've been an avid Android user since fall 2009. I went from the Sprint Hero to the Eris, OG Droid, Incredible, DX, and then made the jump to VZW's iPhone in Feb 2011.
The iPhone 4 is a great phone, but I miss Android. My wife has a D2 and wants my iPhone 4. Well 4g is just now being turned on in my area....so........she has approved my purchase of the TB as long as I sell her D2 to help cover the cost!
She gets the iPhone and can Facetime with her sister (they live 3 hours apart).
I'm touching base here, obviously I'm sure that most people are happy with their TB but please let me know what you think?
Is it worth the effort?
What are some things I can do to prep for battery life? I'm considering a second battery and have read about disabling 4g, but I'm not as likely to do this in my area now.
On another note...I'm doing this partly because of the discounted rate we get right now and I'd like to make sure that unlimited 4g data is on there at our current rate.
My last note: I'd never take the D2 over the iPhone...just saying If this doesn't work out I may consider a switch to Sprint when the EVO 3d comes out
Get it. Or not. Its your call and you already know what you want, most likely.
Personally I wouldn't trade my TB for anything. I hate apples overcontrol and 3d is one of the dumbest marketing gimmicks for a phone I have seen in a long time, just saying.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I would go TB before Iphone 4 twice on Sunday, but I would also grab the extended battery while there
I don't recommend the extra battery thing. Wait till you see how much of a ***** it is to open the battery cover. I've only opened it twice (once to put the SIM/battery in when I first got it, and once a few days ago because I had to do a battery pull). Everytime I open it I feel like I'm going to break the damn thing!
I got a TB, and so far I like it a lot. The only thing I have against it is the battery life (but I have got it down to a manageable level). So if you are away from the charger a lot, grab a spare.
And plus, you can still videochat with the TB. I'm sure that there will be a solution for iphone to TB videochatting out there.
The 4G is wicked fast, to the point I feel like slowing down if I have to get on wifi. Plus, since VZ is not charging premium for 4G access unlike another carrier, and not to mention locking into unlimited data before it goes away some day, these 2 factors convinced me to jump in.
All in all, I recommend.
That sucks, I've considered the inductive charging back but that would rule out the Ballistic HC case.
A few good options; root it and put a good Rom/kernel and/or get the extended battery. I've done both.

I'm waiting for Skype to release their fix before installing it. The wife and her sister currently use Skype, just not on her D2. They use their PC's, but now they'll have another option.

Go for it, you'll love the phone.
I have no regrets, even more so since neither Moto or VZW have squashed the rumors of the Bionic being scrapped, which was the device I was waiting for. Add a 1yr contract on top of that, and everything is roses.
As far as battery life.. I bought a spare release day thinking it would be a good idea. I havent used it once..
Keep your auto sync'ing to a minimum, display brightness mid level and dont run battery sucking apps and you're fine. I get through a day no problem with normal use, and I am running slightly OC'd at 1.2GHz.
I have had mine for 26 hours… Here is my impression. Battery life is not bad at all if you turn 4G off which I did because I don’t even have it in my area. Everything else is great… except one of the worst kickstand designs ever designed.
First off it’s on the wrong side so you can’t have the kickstand out and have the USB cable plugged in at the same time. As stupid and terrible of a design that is it’s not that big of a deal as I really don’t see myself using the kickstand that much.
The real problem is that the kickstand covers the speaker!!!!
It’s just beyond me why they did this. You want to talk on speaker, or listen to music, or watch a YouTube video… whatever. Well the audio is going to be muffled compared to if you have the kickstand out always… no matter what. Even if you can hear fine you always know you could hear it better if the kickstand was out. So you will always be walking around holding your phone with the kickstand out for no reason other than just so the speaker won’t be covered.
Its design flaws like this that just drive me f’ing crazy!! I want to just remove the kickstand altogether. It’s something that is a hindrance like 95% of the time and might be a benefit maybe 5%.
Just drives me crazy
.
Other than that its awesome.

After getting an email from VZ saying I was eligible for an upgrade at promo prices, I went to BB to get a Bolt and charge it to my BB card until I sold my Droid X. 15 minutes after the guy at BB Mobile told me I would have to buy at retail price or activate on a new line, I was walking out of Verizon with my new Bolt, charged to my Verizon account. Sold the X the day before my 14 day trial period with the Bolt was over. I was sweating that one out as I didn't really want to go back to my DX after getting to know the TBolt.
Long story even longer, be prepared to hear that you can't get the Bolt from BB at less than full retail. I'm not saying you can't, just be prepared.

You are correct and it went down in an ugly fashion. The store manager approved the price match...however the BB Mobile Manager refused to authorize the match. I let them know my disappointment, especially since the store manager approved it. I've worked retail, and if the store manager messed up they usually honored it for that occurrence.
I literally went across the street and purchased the phone from VZW at $130.00 cheaper. The sad thing, I was actually going to purchase an invisible shield and couple of other accessories at BB so it wasn't a total wash if they honored it.
I emailed customer service with the store number and let them know about my experience. It probably won't go anywhere but I really did think that it was messed up, especially since they took me through most of the transaction prior to notifying me.
BTW some beautiful numbers! Not the best, but I'm very happy!

Battery life sucks, phones too big, feels like a brick, and can CAN BE USED AS A DEADLY WEAPON! sad to say i'm using the iphone, again. I think with the upcoming Rezound and Galaxy Nexus, most people will wait to compare all three before making a decision. I know I will.

we've already compared y0.
No one in their right mind is getting the RAZR, so it just comes down to the other 2.
And it's not that the Nexus is better then the Rezound(or vice versa)... just moreso which one is more suited to the individual's needs/tastes.

the screen is horrible compared to the rezound and galaxy nexus. Non-removable battery is another potential problem. The phone is very wide and doesn't feel comfortable in the hand at all.
Just came back from best buy looking to play with the rezound, razr and kindle fire.
1. Razr battery was dead, was locked up in a cabinet instead of on display. Got to hold it but wouldn't stay on.
2. Only 1 Rezound in stock and none on display, asked why, they said they haven't really set up for it.
3. Fire hadn't even arrived yet to be put on display.
Total fail by best buy. Best Buy, The Borders of 2012.

Just came back from best buy looking to play with the rezound, razr and kindle fire.

heh.. the Best Buy Mobile in the mall here had 'dummy' RAZR & Rezound phones on display. They said they have Rezounds in stock, but have yet to receive any RAZR's.
reminds me of when the hd7 launched on t-mobile. Had to go to 3 stores to find one that even had a demo unit. None of them had set up for it on launch day. Sad that carriers don't get it. If you advertise the phone, it will sell.
Yeah I don't particularly care for the RAZR (or any Motorola products). That being said, I got to play with the RAZR and it was okay. The screen sounds bad on paper, but in person, its not the end of the world. Screen was passable, still totally usable. My store actually sold just 1 RAZR, but it was a more of a swap than a return. Haha.
But then I got to play with the Galaxy Nexus and that screen was muchhhh nicer. ICS was all flashy, and to be quite honest, a bit confusing, but I guess that's expected since a lot has changed.
Also played with the Rezound and I very much liked that phone. Screen was also beautiful, and still quality HTC build materials.

The first T-Mobile store that I went to had a live demo sitting behind the counter. I got to play with it while they activated my HD7. This was a week before the actual release day too. But yes, I agree, having phones out helps to sell them.
I entered the 11/11/11 sweepstakes on Verizon's Twitter and i won a free Droid Razr, nice! I will be giving it to my wife maybe of she performs ( insert lude sex act here ) for a ( insert a crazy lenght of time here ) I wish it came a few days back I mean come on I just bought her a phone off ebay for 100 bucks.

The only thing that I wish it had was image stabilization and an AMOLED screen but for 399$, it's still amazing. Glad they decided to go with the SD card this year. I love the 5.7 inch screen and would even go with 6 inch, but 5.7 puts it at note 4 competition. Motorola should have put the 3600mah battery in both phones, but thank goodness there's a quick charge

I have read that the Moto X Play, despite having a 64-bit SoC, has 32-bit Android.
It's the same for the Moto G, with Google's argument being that 64-bit would be too heavy for a device with 1 GB RAM. But the Moto X Play has 2 GB.
Is this true, and what would be the impact of not having 64-bit Android?

It is running 32-bit Android. Maybe when Android M comes it, Moto may release a 64 bit version
When do new phones usually get their first root kit / ROM?
I've never bought a phone that just came out before, so I'm always used to using ROMS that are customed to my liking. Using vanilla Android is so uncomfortable.
Hey everyone
Excited to get this phone later this year. I am coming from Nexus 4, so I'm in search of a better battery life kind of device, and seems like MXP with the 3600 mAh battery might just get me satisfied!

It'll definitely last you the whole day.
May I ask you (that have the Moto X as a daily driver) what do you think about the quality of the plastic frame?
For me it was kind of a let down when I knew it wasn't metallic. For now it's the only thing make me esitate... (also the 2GB of ram actually )

The plastic frame on the X Play doesn't feel cheap to me. Coming from a Galaxy S6, the Moto X Play feels great.
The only part that feels cheap is the power button. It's loose. It moves up and down slightly when you touch it and it rattles if you shake the phone.
The rest of the build is very solid though. Great feel in the hand.
Does it support Miracast or MHL/Hdmi?

perfect
Miracast support is there - I'm currently looking at the XDA app through my TV screen.
With that said, I don't think the Motorola has any support for a wired HDMI connection, unfortunately.

2014 vs Play
I'm actually thinking about replacing my old Galaxy Nexus but I'm wondering about picking 2014 MotoX or this new Moto X Play.
What do you think could be the best choice?
thanks!

I'm considering the same phones, the price is almost the same now...
Moto X 2014 :
Better Build quality (it's awesome)
more compact
Amoled Display (but that's depend if you like it or not)
IR sensors for active display
Moto X Play:
Huuuuge battery (the one on the 2014 is pathetic)
better camera
bigger screen (but bigger phone overall)
SD expansion

You got the point!
I think Amoled displays can really benefit of active display: just the lit pixels are on.
But I can't stand active display's pulsing behaviour of "hey, you git a notification 30 seconds ago and you didn't check it!"
I'm perplexed about how bigger the Play is! Actually the screen/overall size ratio is a little bit better, isn't it?
And then the hardest point: price! Not the stock price but the actual street price you can find: moto X play seems to be cheaper, for what you get, after all.
I'm actually just surprised there seems to be zero development so far. The only recovery we have is from the osprey (2015 G), and thus we have root. I know this isn't released in the US, but didn't think most devs were from there honestly. The G has a ton in comparison! Lol. So eager for a kernel that maximizes efficiency while also eliminating lag.

This phone isn't widely available and it's an "in-between" model. Most people will either be on a budget and opt for the G or want the best specs and opt for the X Style.
For me, the one and only real selling point of this phone was the battery. I think most power users are used to charging part way through the day and don't really look at battery size as a big selling feature.
It also doesn't help that reviews haven't painted this "massive" battery in a good light. And they're not wrong. I am able to get about 20% more battery life out of this 3630mAh battery than several other phones I've had with batteries in the 2400-2700mAh range. More battery is good, but I gave up a lot of stuff for a phone that is less fluid and missing sensors just for a meager boost in battery life.
Honestly, if I could find someone to take my Moto X Play off my hands, I'd gladly go back to the Moto G. Comparable battery life, better performance, and tons of ROM/modding support.

The size of the battery is undeniable. It is ultimately up to the software you're running on the phone. I have high hopes for the future of the Moto X Play once it's availability becomes more widespread.

Hi everyone!
My team and I are working on a edge notification mod concept which I'd like to share with you (we're taking part in the transform the smartphone challange). Here's a quick look:
We missed led notifications and came up with an all-around edge light system - we're almost finished with the prototype. Small leds, which can be found on some phones are very underwhelming- we are planning to spice things up a bit.
The prototype has 20 individually lit leds, which can glow in basically any color. This allows for pretty much unlimited customization - patterns & colors.
We're linking this to 3rd party notificactions (facebook, twitter, instagram, gmail etc), text messages, calls, calendar events, emails and so on. You'll be able to set any color to any notification you like.
There's also additional functionality like:
- a low battery status
- gradual illumination and color shift as the battery recharges
- option to save settings for different time/days
- automatic on/off at specific time/day
- option to link to specific contacts (calls and text messages)
It's a quick way of reading between the lines and knowing what kind of information your phone is reaching out to you with before you even unlock the screen. It also lets you priotitize - for example, you can enable it for the notifications you want to receive at a specific moment and not worry or get disturbed by the stuff you don't care about.
You can link specific notifications, like social media with color 1, work contacts with color 2, family & friends color 3 etc. Simple, quick and efficient.
There's no impact on battery life, as we're planning to squeeze in a 2000mah battery in there. It's going to be enough to power the enhanced notification for a few days or you can also use it to add some power to your phone if you have to.
You'll be able to set a specific battery % to start and stop charging at or straight after snapping it in - it will recharge the phone automatically.
Here's a quick look at the app:
You can read more on our website: www.modmyedge.com
Thanks,
Tom

I like it, but while I hate to be "that guy", what does Razer think about the name? Referring to their "Chroma" keyboard.

Shouldn't be a problem as our logo is different. However, we have several other ideas for the name/logo in case we run into issues like these . Currently we're mostly focused on development and functionality.
Sweet! I'd buy that!

If you are able to squeeze that battery in, do you plan on making it support wireless charging?
Also, Idk how far you are in to development, but do you have any expected price range?

We get that question a lot! It's definitely possible. However, we need need to look into some design guidelines and see how much would the thickness get increased by. The edge notifications and additional power are a priority, but we'll take all suggestions into account . We want to be competitive when it comes to pricing, but it's too early to give an accurate estimate. There's going to be a 25% discount for everyone who pre-orders though, stay tuned!

It would be nice if you would actually cover the phone up and make it a case to protect the aluminium body and the screen. Or make 2 versions, one that acts like a case and the other one just like a style shell

Why is the indiegogo ended??
Intrigued...quick questions about the battery portion...
1. Would this be able to work as some of the other mods do with the "efficiency mode? That kind of trickle charges the phone and keeps it at 80% battery?...
2. Does the battery in the mod charge when the phone is plugged in?
Also, I agree with the idea of making it sort of like a "case." Reason being, I like using a bumper case when I have a mod attached to the phone, but it looks like the available.bumper cases from Verizon or Incipio would cover up the colored led portion...If you could integrate a softish material that protects the sides and wraps around to the front it would be AMAZING

We haven't decided on how the battery portion will work yet, but our idea is a bit different. We want to implement a setting in the app that will enable 2 modes:
1. phone battery starts recharging straight after the module is snapped in (this would probably use trickle charging, but we're still not 100% sure)
2. you set a fixed % value that you would like your phone to start and stop charging at. Lets say you set start to 30% and stop to 70% - when the phone drops to 30% it will recharge till it reaches 70%. This, in my opinion is a better option and manages battery life more efficiently.
The bumper has been mentioned by others a few times, so it is definitely an option. The question remains though if Motorola's requirements for Moto Mods won't get in the way. We'll be looking into it
I wouldn't make a case version of this. I actually just recommend you putting stretch goal for 3 optional bumper cases. One for each current Z device and then future ones if your still doing stuff later on. That way if you get the mod you can still use it next generation. If you do the case version you are limited if next gen doesn't have the same dimensions.
