Hi All.
I recently tried playing Asphalt 8 (with a gamepad) while on MHL connected to my TV.
(Phone is a 1080p Xperia Z ultra)
While it displays, the performance on TV is much slower than on the phone itself (which is perfect)
I imagine this is due to the GPU having to drive 2 displays at the same time.
While there is an app that reduced the backlight of the phone to 0 (an XDA developer)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nkahoang.screenstandby
I don't think this will help with the performance.
Am I the only one with this problem? is there any way to fix it?
Nobody plays games on a TV?
thanks!
just found a fellow XDaer posted a workaround, that improves the FPS a the expense of resolution
(thanks ERICTHK)

However, still a bit laggy for my liking.
Do newer phones have this problem too? or is it just the old XZU?

There i'll be searching for some videos, thinking that anything has chanced with this new version - tapped on a video - waiting - watching about five seconds - and? NOTHING! Its like before, laggy, struggleing and unwatchable...
why this damn devices is not optimized? why is this expensive thing hardware not able to do, what a two or three year old pocket pc is running without any problems? why we must hack this device to get a piece of performance?
This device is the best, the nicest and the fully featured piece of hardware that i've ever had. i've been a pda junkie since the beginning of this with the crappy WIN CE2.1.
Since Win CE is mutch time gone and the devices gone faster and faster. The good old casio em500 running a 150 MHz MIPS CPU was fast - the well known iPAQ3660 was faster and much better in playing videos or something. Every change of hardware was a change that was useful. After that a MDA2 with a 400 MHz x-scale cpu was mine and it was faster than everything before. MDA Compact was faster, The Dell AXIM Series was fast like a rocket - but then XDA Orbit brakes me like a train crashing in a wall of steel. I thought i've been running this device with a handbrake or something.
The Orbit 2 is a little bit faster - but if there is no video driver the videos are laggy - and that is what i don't understand. Why HTC?!
1. The youtube function is still new to the CorePlayer (I mean the direct youtube support whith available configuration)
2. The lag is mostly because of a small buffer and/or a crappy net connection
3. Unless CorePlayer doesn't suck whith normal (320x240 24~25 FPS) videos, don't complain.
Yes, we know that the drivers are missing, that's nothing new. If you wan't to know the cause check my signature. We heard enough people complaining, and most of us tried to do something instead of (in this case very detailed) whining.
If you knew what to expect, then don't complain, it you didn't... maybe next time you'll check forums/reviews/youtube for more info before buying.

We feel your pain buddy...
Or should I say, we felt your pain. We've got past that stage already, and have kind of accepted this crappy fact of life - that we've been bent over with a smile. I personally chose this device because there is nothing else to choose from!
On the other hand, HTC makes me really want to get an iPhone, even with its lack of any modern features - it is a device that just works (well, after you've jail-broke it).

I wonder why your facing this problem?!?! CorePlayer 1.2.2 gives smooth flawless video, I've tested in on every video format commonly used.
Have you installed it on your Storage card or Device memory?
Just out of curiosity, will it make any difference?
I have it installed on the device itself, will it get a boost if i install it on the memory card?

Yes, the app performs faster if installed on the Device memory, hence the improved video speeds.

That was a kinda unclear response, i asked if i'll get a boost if i'll get a boost if i install on the MicroSD Memory card, and you reply with yes, you will get a boost from the Device Memory.
But i'm guessing i've done the right thing (installing it on the Built In memory)
Better to install on the device memory. As a rule of thumb install apps on device memory, especially if you have performance or incompatibility issues.
As for Coreplayer, I am using 1.2 with QTv. While it is a lot better with QTv and benchmark numbers are great, it's still not that fluid. When panning in scenes or fast motion, it's still not very smooth. When I check properties I might have 1 dropped frame out of several thousand so I know it's not dropped frames. I have encoded my movie (source is my DVD) at 320x240. It's at 24 fps. I can always try encoding at 30fps and see if that fixes it. But I don't believe fps to be the issue since playing the 24fps movie on my computer is smooth. Any ideas?
Hi,
I have bought a mhl cable, but when it is connected to the tv, shows 24 fps limit.
Its good for watching vodeos but in games it should be 60 fps.
So what can i do
Thanks

I don't think the phone can handle 60fps on a big TV. I've tried GTA3 connected to a 42in TV and off course it was choppy as ****.

In addition to which our Sensation seems to lack the horsepower to play anything via MHL truly smoothly as well. If you want to experiment for a laugh, download Electopia game/benchmark from the Market. When you start the app you will be asked if you want to run it at WVGA or full screen. Start with WVGA, then, on the next screen select 'benchmark mode'. After it finishes (about a minute) it will give you a score in cluding the average fps. Now go back and do the same full screen (it will be lower). Now go back and run both tests with the phone connected to the tv via MHL and you will see it's even lower. I get:
WVGA: 39.75 fps
960x540: 33.68 fps
WVGA connected to tv via MHL: 29.62 fps
960x540 connected to tv via MHL: 25.09 fps
Bear in mind these are averages so it's likely that frame rates are dropping substantially below this at times. In addition, in percentage terms, those framerates are a world apart. At least I can now quantify why Shadowgun and MC3 are a bit frustrating via MHL.
I'm hoping that as the newer phones come to market this year journalists will get their backsides into gear and start benchmarking these kind of factors for us ; ) For those of use that want to connect our device to a tv then control it via bluetooth keyboard and a mouse (essentially use it as a little media pc for light gaming/internet/movies/email etc), this kind of info is really important. Wish I'd known before I bought it. Not sure how well the new 720p screened devices will get on with the extra pixels AND duplicating the image to a tv...

Based on the performance of our phone and what bonesy said above, I guess not. I guess you could try overclocking your Sensation to make it maintain 24fps and see if that helps....
Before I buy my next phone I'll try and make sure it has the power to mirror to a tv smoothly.
Good Morning all.
I bought the TF700 to try gaming on a full HD tregra 3 device, and what better tablet than this one. I knew ahead of time that the resolution and dpi was going to pull gaming down a bit.
I downloaded Horn yesterday and played a few hours, and overall the game is great, but it lags noticeably. In many places the fps look very low and goes beyond my confort. I mainly use this tablet to read and its my overall media device.
What do you guys think. Is there anything I can do to improve gaming? I'm a bit jealous because the nexus 7 and HOX guys are all saying how good it is in their devices. But I really like this tablet and want to keep it.
Any input would be great guys, thaks.
PS. I'm full stock, havent messed with it yet.

Try rooting and debloating...
... we will need to get more custom ROM work going, ASUS stock is just a mish-mosh of dirty hax and yucky code.

I don't know about that game at all. You could try force 2d rendering in the developers section of settings. May help with lag, other than trying performance setting.

It just came out yesterday, but it has not settings I can play with. Will sit tight for a while and see how far we can take this tablet. I will try root and debloat and go from there.
You can also install a program that allows you to change the cpu governor like SetCPU. When I have plenty of power I set it to performance for a smoother experience. Once we have an overclockable kernel I suspect this device will fly even moreso. They were able to get the T30L to 2 Ghz, our T33 might be pushed further than that
Plz dont trick people if you dont know.
Tegra3 's GPU is not powerful enough(only 12 cuba units......too weak...), in other words, Horn 's graph is the best we can have. Laggy is not a problem beccause of 1080p res.
There's nothing else we can do ,(BTW, overclocking is not working here)
We can wait for the next version of Horn which may lower some physic and shadow effects to improve the performance.
Are you sure your tablet is running in "performance" mode rather than the "balance" mode that it starts in on bootup?
I ran the game for hours flawlessly ...
I restarted it many times and it always boots in balance. I will try to chane it to boot in performance mode. Im sure theres and option for this. I'll update if all the above help.
oh, I always kill all tasks before palying high graphics games using asus task manager.
Thanks
Yea i get this lag too with the game. I used system tuner pro to set the CPUs to a solid 1.6 and still saw the lag or FPS drop.
So I purchased the game also, and the game would start to load and then music would play with a blank screen, then cut out.... anyone else having this problem???

Is this game optimized for the screen resolution of the TF700? Anyone own a prime still that can compare how it runs on both systems? The extra resolution might be enough to cause some playing issues. Maybe the same issues are present in the lower resolution devices but it's harder to notice.
i will also test this game out with the tf300 my brother has. I want to know if tf700 can play it better because...ahem.. the devs of horn told ipad 2s and 3 people . "it's much easier on the tegra... nvidia really knows their physics.." and basically no can do, when they raged about tegra effects. So I wanted to know how this tablet would handle it. SO, ill keep trying.
I can get it to connect and play for maybe 2 minutes until it starts freaking out and I have to disconnect it. The latency is great up until then. That feature is a very important one to me but it won't work. I know it's in beta but i'm not sure if that's what needs to be worked on or if they just want to reduce the latency more and improve the image quality. I have other miracast devices and they act the same way with the exception of 2 of them. The nexus 7 doesn't work right, i have a galaxy s4 clone and my main phone that work badly.
I used it one night while playing ShineRunner with my wife. I had her screen miracast on the TV so I could help her out. It worked great for about 10 minutes then started acting up and I had to kill it.
I wanted to know the same thing and am shocked nobody has really tested a few devises for least lag and shuttering.
I bought the Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro and updated its FW.
I'd say the lag is minimal and is not my main issue now.
Random shuttering can be a pain. It can vary from a only few times to a lot. At this point it seems to be trigger by some games more than others.
Afterburner with a touch profile shuttered a lot (35% of the time) not sure if it a resource issue with the touch profile or general interference in my room.
I played dead trigger 2 with native controls shuttered a lot less(10-15% of the time)
I had the device less than 5 ft during my tests.
This site has done some basic latency tests a handful of these miracast devices. It seems the Netgear Push2TV (PTV3000) had the least lag when used in a pc environment.
http://data.withinwindows.com/miracast-display-devices-and-windows-81-compatibility/
I think I will go buy the Netgear Push2TV tonight on my way home from work and test it.
Note
Having a game mode on the tv helps a lot with lag. If you stack the lag with the non-game mode picture processing of the tv and the miracast protocol it becomes very noticeable.
It's a good thing I searched the web first before buying a Miracast dongle. Sounds like it's not yet stable for gaming.
I just want a HDMI dongle for my tv, that I can cast my phone screen to. Mostly so that, I can use a controller and play my phone games on my tv, the phone acting like a mini-console.
-> What will perform better, chromecast or miracast/ezcast? chromecast dongle costs about twice as much, so I just want to make sure it's worth it
-> how good is the performance with either? will i be getting full framerate etc? I have tried several hdmi cable adapters and none of them seem to work for me (yes, even after plugging in power, best i could manage is choppy/flickery performance) so i'm trying to get this as a workaround
any other info i should know? phone is rooted so no worries there
my chromecast runs fine, it have a bit delay, but it's ok.
Miracast works well too.
I don't see any differences.
have you tried it while gaming? i mean some nice 3d games that are using a lot of the phone's power. for example soulcraft ii (it's free). does it affect the quality of the screen sharing?

There is a noticeable lag with the Chromecast. It is very smooth, but its about a half a second behind. I don't think it would be good for gaming unless you are playing some sort of turn based game.
I also have a LG TV with miracast support, but it is unusable. It shows one frame every 10 seconds or so.
I have miracast. It lags too...I don't think it was meant for gaming. Unless it was a turn based one. There is also a slight loss of video quality
