Never had a reboot issue with KitKat or Lollipop on my Nexus 5. However, since upgrading to 5.1.1 from 5.1, my phone randomly turns off during usage. Its a power down and not a reboot as I need to manually hold the power button to get it to boot back up.
I've not been able to find a pattern to the crash but usually its an app that either uses the camera or something like Hangouts doing a call. Battery typically is between 45-80% when this occurs and app usage is varied. Happens about once a week. I'm able to browse the web or use Talon and get the battery to 30-50% without stability concerns. It just seem that certain apps expose the bug.
Couple of additional data points. If I have it connected to an external battery and battery stays above 95%, power down doesn't happen. In addition, if it boots back up & its not connected to a power source it will then power off again. The next boot will do an ART rebuild of cache.
I searched, but haven't seen another report like this.

i have a 32gb white nexus 5, fully charged. stock OS, rooted with TWRP recovery. using Faux123 kernel.
what's weird is that i am unable to turn on the device:
- if i power off the phone and attempt to power it on
- reboot the phone (it will shut off like it's rebooting, but won't turn back on)
pressing and releasing the power button, holding the power button for X amount of time and releasing, etc will not turn on the phone.
in order to turn it back on i have to use vol down + power...even then i have to hold it, release, hold, release, etc and by random chance the phone will boot into bootloader.
the power button doesn't seem to be the issue because it works fine turning the display on/off while the phone is on.
i have not figured any pattern or why this is happening.
has anyone else experienced similar issues?
Your best bet is to go back to stock. Stay stock for a bit and have a baseline to know how your phone is. Then after you start customizing it with 3rd party kernels, ect, you'll know if it's the phone or mods you did.

My phone is on 5.1.1 custom Rom. I am having issues with random reboots. I did fresh install after flashing factory image. Phone reboots randomly and stuck on boot logo. After several attempt to restart phone, it goes into Android optimizing app screen and starts optimizing few apps. it boots normally after completion. how do i solve this issue.
I am really pissed with this issue. I havent installed any other kernel but phone continues to reboot to "Optimizing apps 1 of 166" screen.
Please help.
It looks like phone get bricked. I tried to wipe data, system, cache to install Rom but phone gets restart. I am able to reboot to bootloader but phone gets restart again. How do i install factory rom with this issue.
Problem of power button
This is not a software problem as this optimization of apps is due to the failure or shot of power button have you ever noticed this happens only when. You use power button ..
These are solutions for you
If your phone is under warranty carry it to the service center.
If not it is so expensive that the authorized service request you to change whole mother board.
Better find any local service center to replace power button..
Or use apps like gravity screen which helps you to use the phone without the need of power button but concern is it consume more battery..
Or
Rapidly press your phone power button until the phone is completely on till home screen is visible this is only a temporary solution
As I am junior member I can't share any link of the video about nexus 5 power button failure

Hello
I have a 32gb nexus 5. I had cataclysm rom 5.1 installed.
Sometime a couple of weeks ago, my nexus 5 would randomly start shutting off. As in the screen would turn off, and would not turn on using the power button. Even if i put it on charge, it would not turn on. I had to press and hold the power+volume up button to restart the phone. Used to usually work.
Then slowly and slowly, it became difficult to restart the phone using the "volume up+power" button. I probably had to do the combination 5-10 times and it would then turn on from the google screen. My recent apps still running in the background. Sometimes it used to optimize all the apps again.
I discovered it USUALLY restarting when I do something processor heavy (i.e. put more load on the processsor like gaming/connecting to HSDPA and browsing etc). I transferred my sim card to a different phone, undervolted and underclocked the processor and used it on airplane mode on wifi, and it rarely restarted(once or twice over a week). I can also almost always reproduce the "hang and shut down" by putting a sim card and and browsing specially on mobile data
I plan on giving away this phone but I dont know what the issue is. There is no reliable service center near me.
Any idea what the problem could be? From what I gathered, it could be a battery issue?
I have tried flashing factory images and reverting back to lollipop, both of which do not work unfortunately
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
First I hope I'm posting this in the right place - to get assistance/direction that will help my situation. If not my apologies - please send me to the right place.
I have a Nexus 5, Android 5.0.1, Rooted.
- My device was charging then suddenly went into boot cycle - showing the Google logo then powering off and repeating the same. Trying to get into recovery mode was impossible - would power cycle out of there too.
- I have tried doing the multiple fast press, and sticky button clean solution (actually taking the back plate off etc.) posted out on the net but that has not resolved my issue.
- Left my phone to charge overnight. The problem still persists. More accurately. Turning it on without it plugged in to the charger does nothing.
All the following is the behavior when its plugged into the charger:
- Without pressing any button just shows a full battery charge icon for about 8 sec then the screen turns black for two seconds and that keeps on repeating. If I press the power button it shows the Google logo for a 1.5 seconds and shuts of, going back to the battery charge icon flashing cycle.
- Now if I press the power and volume down button It takes me to the fast boot mode screen where can cycle through the menu's <Start, Restart Bootloader, Recovery mode, power off>. None of the options work. No matter which I chose the phone shuts of and goes back to the full battery icon cycle.
- I was thinking a battery issue but, when in recovery mode the phone will not turn off. I can use the volume buttons to go through the menu as pointed above but using the power button just takes me back to the battery icon cycle. Now I'm not sure, battery, power button or software. What could it be?
I am thinking, try a new battery or, damn buy a new phone (my phone has outlived its warranty). If there are any ideas on fixing this I'll appreciate your opinions. If i have to get a new phone is there any hope of salvaging data. I have a 4 month backup on my computer, but my latest is stored on my phone.
Thanks.
If you run into this issue and none of the solutions in my original post apply, read on in case my final solution helps you out (you might not even have to get paid help if you know how to work on the fault I was experiencing). If not - nothing more for you to gain if you read on.
As it stands:
I took my device to a reputable cell repair shop. After describing to them the symptoms of my device the out ruled the stuck power button issue and tentatively diagnosed it as a firmware bug or nand memory corruption issue which would require a nand mem flash which they had the tools to do. I went for it.
When I went to pickup the device. They reported that the device was functional and they did not even have to do the flush. My data is safe. Issue was a loose battery contact which they detected and fixed. It's been 8 hours and all looks good. These guys were going to charge me a $80 bill to do the flash if the recovery was successful, but I had to leave a $56 deposit after tax for them to begin the work and pay the balance if the procedure was successful. When closing the deal they just gave me the device and said since they did not have to do what they anticipated, the deposit I left them was satisfactory.
I have my device back and working (at least for now) and have the chance to make external backups incase the issue reoccurs. I'm happy. Cheers.
It used to happen every few days, not a massive deal, but it's happened five times today. Including overnight, meaning my alarm failed to go off.
Ambient display stays on - sometimes the clock even keeps running - but none of the buttons do anything. Only escape is press and hold power until it reboots. Or, sometimes I'll be doing something on the phone and it'll just completely freeze. Again, press and hold power is all I can do. Weirder, sometimes I can click on an app, and it'll just pull up the start of the load screen for that app, I can hit home or switch apps and that acts fine, it just won't actually open any of my apps or do anything in them. Again, have to press and hold power to reboot.
Rooted, Android 12, no other modifications to the OS that I'm aware of.

Backup all your data while you can, you may be in the beginning stages of hardware failure. Some people with the following problem had freezes before the phone failed completely.
[FIX] Pixel 3 QUSB_BULK_CID:xxxx_SN:xxxxxxxx
Hi, I have a Pixel 3 that won't turn on, won't charge, won't get into recovery mode, and gets recognized as QUSB_BULK_CID:xxxx_SN:xxxxxxxx when connected to a pc. I am an ignorant regarding phones, flashing, etc... Is there any way of getting...

If that is not your problem, completely wiping the phone and flashing a new image may help.
It's been years at this point, I'd be very surprised if it all suddenly died in a way connected to this. There's nothing on my phone that's critical that I don't have backed up, though.
Not sure if there's any way to determine if I might have or get the EDM thing?

Not until it fails.
