They only just appeared today, randomly when I took my phone out of my pocket. I've restarted the phone to no avail, and am panicking because I dont know where to begin..can anyone diagnose my problem?
Looks like dead pixels, but the image isn't really clear enough.
Take a screenshot with some app.
If you see that in the screenshot, then reflash your firmware & ROM or flash an RUU.
If you don't see it in the screenshot, then it's a hardware problem.
Thanks, I took a screenshot and it's not a part of it. The lines keep getting bigger and bigger!
Sounds like it needs to go for repair. Is it under warente? Best of luck to you!

I too have this issue. It was present from the moment I powered the unit on. I continued with the setup to see if I could adjust the screen or maybe an update might fix it. But sadly no dice. I'm calling Google tonight to see if they can send me another unit or repair this one.
Had the same problem earlier, when i dropped the phone accidentally.
Observation: It gets darker and grows when the phone heats up, and lighter (almost cyan blue) when the phone cools down for a significant period of time with the screen off.
i had to keep the phone near an air conditioner vent for a few hours with the phone turned off for it to disappear.
once the lines disappear completely they dont return back, unless if you drop them again (which is what i did a few days back again.. and the stupid lines are back )
If you have any other ways in which you can get it resolved pls share with us.
Cheers,
Alan
After doing some research here I decided to try to repair my skyrocket screen myself but I am not finding myself as successful as other members here. I can turn on my phone and it appears as if the touchscreen is still working due to the vibrations, but there is no image. After messing around with the phon it seems as if there are only certain instances in which the screen will show an image. It will briefly show an image of a white battery charging when plugged in while the phone is off. It will also display an image (an extremely distorted one however) when put into download mode. Does anyone here have any ideas as to what the cause of these problems are? Could my replacement screen be defective?
If its still distorted one of 2 things happened either one you botched the ribbon cable when installing or 2 the screen is defective take a pic it can be easier for others to determine that way

One of the images is a my phone in download mode. Sorry for the bad quality (my best camera was my phone). If you look closely the warning text is barely visible. When I first go into download mode the screen is first filled with blue pixels until it brightens to the greyish color shown in the picture.
The other is a picture of the screen/digitizer removed. It seems that the ribbon is still intact, but maybe it was damaged in another way.
What do you think would be the best course of action? I should be able to get the screen exchanged for another one, but I'm worried that perhaps the screen is not the thing causing the problem.
I would try another screen first because if the ribbon was in fact damaged you wouldnt have distorted faint Screen like that honestly that would be my choice the screens aren't hard to swap very simple in fact I do this at work at least twice a day if another screen doesn't fix man I'll definitely taken it in

are you plugged in when this happens? try a different charger.
..
No I'm not connected to charger and not water gohst touches....
Its not like ghost touch's at all ......its like jumping.....like the buttons on the bottom of the screen the home key return and the other one can go to the top of the screen and when its completely crazy it gets stuck and when I shut it down it won't turn on again........well its almost turns on its like its on but the screen is kind of weird black....and after an hour or so it will turn on again and everything will happen all over again........(sorry for my English....)
RMA it. My phone started doing that out of the blue. It lasted about a day or so, then it went from a grid of rainbow colored pixels to completely black and stayed like that, unreadable. They sent me a new one right away and didn't charge me anything, I guess it's simply hw failure.
Forgot to mention: it was one from the 311k batch.
@vnvman
These failures occur randomly and can happen with any device. The 311k batch has nothing to do with it

One of the following:
1. Flex cable
2. Screen
3. Motherboard
The above is listed from cheapest to most expensive repair cost, as well as most likely to extremely unlikely.
Or RMA.
So my phone suddenly started flickering out of the blue. And had lines going down vertically. I restarted the phone and then the display was fine but the touch screen wouldn't work. Upon another restart it was just a blank screen with white vertical lines.
Figuring something must be wrong with the screen I ordered a new one, and upon install the new screen has the same problem. Blank screen vertical white lines.
Not sure if another component is faulty.
What do you guys recommend?
Did you drop the device? Sounds like component damage somewhere

Not sure what happened, just started happening randomly. I know its a hardware problem not a software problem. What component could it be?
So the mic piece has a long strip that connects to the motherboard and when I press down on it or wiggle it, the screen flashes so im assuming that component is malfunctioning, and I found a replacement piece on amazon for $17 bucks with prime shipping so hopefully Wednesday the replacement piece will fix my issue.
So my Nexus 5 (a couple months ago) has started to just randomly go black. I get notifications and stuff, and the backlight but no display. Not sure what to do or what part to replace. Would flashing/rooting help at all?
Appears to be a hardware problem.
Was the phone every dropped or exposed to water/moisture? Possible loose connection inside?
No way to tell for sure if the phone needs a new screen unless you are able to test the motherboard in another N5.

It's been dropped a couple times but not like any major drops or anything. Im pretty sure I checked all the connections inside and they were good. Im starting to figure out that the phone has to be off for a little bit then I have to charge it and turn it on and it works again
Sounds like it could be a damaged lcd or lcd connection. If it can work after being charged while powered off, could be battery or USB flex cable issue.

Ya I figured out I have to reboot it a bunch of times then it will work
I think it might be the battery because this is my dad's old phone so it's been in use for a solid 3 years.. I wish I knew for sure though
So I have discovered that if my screen is on for a while the task bar at the bottom starts to shift up and down
Have you found out more about this? I think I have the same problem. My phone never turns black while I use it. But when the screen is off/sleeping, it sometimes won't turn on again. So a force reboot fixes it. Sometimes this happens a lot, some times it works fine a whole day.

I could also mention that this happen every time I unlocked the lockscreen on stock ROMs, and custom. But nameless ROM for some reason got it to this point at least. If any one have black screen on unlocking the block screen, try nameless rom...

So what your saying is to try the rom and see if it fixes it? Can I have a link or something, I don't know much about roms

Maybe, I don't think so. My phone was useless, black screen on every screen unlock. But namelessrom took that away, so that tip about nameless was for those who have the same black screen I had earlier. But now I have the same black screens as you do. Anyway, if you want to try it out, nameless-rom.org

Happens with my nexus too. The screen goes blank randomly ..... But i have managed to deal with it.
Its happan to me also, with 4 nexus 5 of my family.
Is a firmware problem?
I'm trying to buy a new flex cable to see if it will help I'll update when I find out
You're replacing the USB charging flex cable? If you are, be careful with cheap third-party replacements as I have read reports of people having issues with charging, signal, or speaker functionality after installing the cable.

Ya so i sent it to LG finally and the diagnostic said that it was a flex cable issue which I was sure that it was anyway but I have a confirmation now
I've had a similar problem when my display suddenly started failing. First, there was colourful bands over the working display, then colourful static only and then black with backlight only. Bought a new phone, left it for a year and today after digging in the phone for a while I found a fix. The connection between the motherboard (the top bit) and the daughter board (the bit below battery with USB and connection to display) was somewhat loose and when pressed on, the display worked beautifully. I stuffed the insides with some tape to maintain pressure on the connection and phone works great.
Might not work for your problem, but it's worth a try if you're out of warranty and have tools to disassemble the phone.
