I have had my Moto G 3rd gen for about a week now and I am using AT&T. I've had decent coverage and have been able to use LTE but I am using the default APN that the phone provides when adding a SIM card. I also notice that when I am not using LTE the phone drops back to 3G.
I have not found any information about the correct APNs for my carrier. Is HSPA+ supported for this phone on AT&T and are the default APNs the best setting to use?
I don't have the phone, but it could be that with the stock ROM, it will only show 3G even if you are actually using HSPA+. I am using the 1st gen Moto G, and that is what it showed until we got lollipop. Now it shows H when we are on HSPA/HSPA+. Maybe Motorola went back to that on the 3rd gen G? You can find out by going into settings and then looking at the SIM settings and check if you are on UMTS (3G) out HSPA (3G also but with better data speeds).
Edit: oh , and yes, the phone does support the HSPA bands on AT & T).

Thanks for the info. I checked in the settings when my status bar says 3G and I can confirm that I am on HSPA+. As far as APNs go, is it best to stick with the default configuration or is there a place where I can find other APNs?

Do you get descent LTE? You apparently get good H+, so I'd just leave well enough alone.

Hi,
I wanted to follow up with this question since the update to Droid Maxx has the lte band 4 enabled. I would like to know if it is as easy as popping in a tmobile nano sim card and everything will work? Do I have to alter APN settings? I do understand that LTE will only work in reframed areas? but could I still get 3g or even HSPA+?
Thank you in advance for any advice!!
Chris
I got LTE on T-Mobile by added the APN fast.T-Mobile.com into the phone . but the connection is unstable,

Just got my Moto G, previously had a LTE phone (w/ ATT 4g data plan). The Moto G shows 3G network symbol, and not a H+ symbol. I changed the APN to the pta APN and I'm now getting better speeds around 5Mpbs, but still no H+ network symbol.
I live in Philadelphia so we have HSPA+ so wanted to ask if anyone else is seeing this or is this normal? I've seen pics of other people's Moto G and it shows H+, so wanted to see whats up with mine.
Thanks
my Moto G shows H+ (Vodafone Hungary)
I'm also seeing H+ on Giffgaff (uses the O2 UK network)

Where did you order your Moto G? Might have to wait a bit for some US members to chime in since they havent been shipped yet
Works well here in the German O2 network, it showed me H+ the moment I entered my PIN.

I'm US, and ordered from Motorola. I got my Moto G on Monday. I always see 3G in my network symbol, but under About Phone it says under network type HSPA+. Yet I haven't yet seen a H+ network symbol. Weird.
Speedtests?

Hi my wife bought an o2 moto g pay and go yesterday. When we were playing with the one in the shop it had the option to change network mode to 2g or 3g I assume it was running 4.3
The one we bought has 4.4.2 on it and the 2g option has been removed from the menu.
We have a very poor 3g signal in the house and her old phone worked well on the 2g network hence why we bought the moto g as I thought we could select 2g mode.
Are there any ways to change to 2g or gsm.
Or would I flashed it with UK firmware will I have the 2g / 3g option back.
Any help appreciated

I have just moved in UK from US, and I have moto g 3G, 6 GB US GSM from amazon. I got a sim card of EE mobile and I am able to use only 2G data and to make and receive calls, texts as well. The service I bought is "pay as you go" and offers 2 GB of 4G data, I was told if my phone doesn't support 4G will run 3G but I have only 2G, on the connection bar it stays just E which is edge.
Is it possible to flash or root the phone to be able to use the 3G at least? Any ideas would high appreciable.
I think the us moto g uses different frequencies for 3g. It's not possible to make it work as the modem doesn't support the right frequency.

You must be right there is a modem inside and won't be compatible with the Europe frequencies band.
Thank you very much. Cheers.
There are two models sold in US. XT1032 Global GSM and XT1034 AWS. The latter will probably not work in UK. If you have the former, make sure you have correct APN settings. Tweakker may be of assistance.
I have a retail.US (XT1032) and i live in Ireland and i have no problem with data, calls or messaging whatsoever (I'm on tesco mobile) . It should work in UK i suppose.

I just bought an brand new unlocked GSM LTE Moto G (first gen) today. My thought at start was strictly for WiFi and FM Radio. But I stumbled on the Qualcomm SW mod using QPST and a few other apps for the regular Moto G HSPA+ version. So my question is does the LTE version have the CDMA radio present? I know the mod can't create a radio or connection to a network if the HW isn't there. I figure if it's based off the original Moto G (like the XT1028) it might have the hardware but be sw blocked. I checked the radio data and it's 2 different radios in both. But just wondering......If the Nexus 5 could do it with out "offical" CDMA bands maybe this Moto G LTE can too. I have Verizon Wireless and would like to use my Micro SIM card in this phone.
Ideas?

I'm interested in a similar thing for a U.S. Cellular Moto G LTE XT-1042 to see if I can enable the GSM radio bands on it. I know the Sprint Moto X has GSM capability which is partially used for the LTE coverage along with their mini-sim and since the US Cellular Moto G LTE XT-1042 also uses a mini-sim for the LTE coverage it stands to reason that it could work too using the Qualcomm SW mod.
I actually bought one off of Ebay with a Bad ESN that can't be activated on the US Cellular wireless network just to tinker around with. If it works I'll try to do a forum post pulling together all of the forum posts with information that I used to get it to work. If it doesn't work I got it for $48 dollars and can use it as a mini wifi only tablet for streaming music, playing games, etc.
Did it work?
