That will result in fewer sales on a small percentage of users! Probably enough to make even DEV's not want to even jack with it.

They did jack with it and it's now permanent rootable along with the mt4g. People like to be challenged.
From a phone
It will eventually come to all but the nexus series of phones and the geeksphone, and the XDA community will find a way to disable that chip in time.
Why post an article that holds no weight to our phone? And that phone is rooted already.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
If the phone reverts to the original software, how are they ever going to do updates?
I have a feeling that there is a way to make permanent changes. It will just take time for someone to figure it how their updates work.

Bloat will always be the first thing to go.
How do you disable those on the phone?
Can someone start the list of whats safe to remove/freeze?
poker? lol
only google and samsung service application remain ,remove the others will be safe.
wow that is sad, soon we be free, carriers i **** on you
Holy crap. That's insane.
type R-blood
Yeah I've got to say with the locked bootloader and all this bloat, my initial impression is not that great, unfortunately. Day to day use, the phone is not as fast as my GS3 running slim bean.
Screen and hardware are fabulous, but they really effed up the software this time around. Just went wayyyyyyy overboard. And locked bootloader? Come on now

Bloatware, in and of itself, is a justification for unlocking a devices bootloader and installing a custom rom. How much space is wasted?

I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something, but if you are going to disable all that Samsung software whats the point in getting an S4? It seems their software was the big upgrade this time around and the hardware less so.
It's more of a matter of form on AT&T's and Samsung's part.

I don't think Com2UsPoker, Adapt Sound, At&T Family Maps, ChoKUKor, YPmobile,TripAdvisor, BlurbCheckout, Match3VS, or most any software displayed in the screenshots are particularly unique to the GS4. I'm sure most of us will not lament the absence of the majority of the displayed list of applications. All in all, it's a rather rude of Samsung and AT&T to put all of that clearly invaluable software on a $700 phone, then make it uninstallable.

The point? Having a beautiful screen and the best hardware on the market.
I think I speak for many people on this forum when I say that if I could get a GS4 with vanilla Android, I would do so in an instant and never look back.

That bloatware is what is causing the lag online reviewers have been mentioning. If you disable/remove it, the phone will have no lag at all.
I'm hopeful to see some AOSP-based ROMS so I can remove the bloat known as TouchWIZ.

Being the best is debatable. Nevertheless if you want a pure stock experience, then you might as well get a Nexus 5 when it comes out. It will be unlocked, cheaper, and probably have better specs.
Sweet update. I always ran 1.5gigs+ of RAM and have noticed the occasional lag spikes this phone has (especially with live wallpapers), this update brought me down to 750mb of RAM. I'm hearing you can re-root after so there really is no disadvantage to this update.

actually more ram use might mean its caching better. Android memory management is a strange thing. I used to use a task killer to "free up" more memory on my old phone but that actually made it slower.

Thank you for beating me to the punch.
In Linux, and for that matter, all modern operating systems, more RAM used is better. Unused RAM = wasted RAM.

I noticed the huge drop in RAM use as well, pretty nice.
Brings it more in line with my SGS3 on boot, so it makes a little more sense.
So far, significantly snappier.

I don't think it's as black and white as you make it sound. This is a HUGE debate and I'm currently on the side that available RAM = better performance.

I think there is a gray area where the system should cache some of our apps. But not fill the whole damn thing up! But not cache anything at all either.
There should be a middle ground and Samsung should just run some performance test and see where we get the best response times. I really don't get how they do their testing.

Let's not get too carried away - first, if this were "the best update ever," it would have included an unlocked bootloader, and since it did not, it IS not the best ever.... second, there certain is a disadvantage to updating right now, it has not been confirmed or denied that this update has in fact patched the exploit Dan "THE MAN" has created, and to quote him directly:
djrbliss said:
Is it safe to install OTA updates?
If you are interested in taking advantage of this release, it is recommended that you avoid installing OTA updates until it is published. Please be aware that refraining from installing updates may prevent you from receiving security and stability fixes for your device, and consider whether this is a risk you are willing to accept.

So it's not the best thing to tell people who aren't familiar with this stuff to update away - yes, you CAN Odin back to the original firmware that was originally released and no, it did not blow any q- or e-fuses, but it still isn't recommended by our fearless bootloader unlocker, so I for one and holding off

Then why are we waiting for the Verizon model to drop? If they've already produced millions of them, just packing them up and shipping them out, why are we waiting? Not being arrogant, just trying to ask the obvious question here
In another post task650 (an awesome developer) did the update and then reverted using odin.

Eh, not "doom and gloom" (I think that's the way the phrase is supposed to go), but I don't have ANY lag and I'm not as interested in upgrading, downgrading, unlocking bootloader, and then doing my thing.... just saving a step for the future since I don't NEED the update right now, honestly

Since I updated to the latest ota, this is reason alone for me to want to return the device
I have to admit. I hated this phone before the update I received late last night. It was the first galaxy out of the 4 that I've already had that I hated. The ota improved things 100 percent! The phone is now smooth and works well with 0 lag.

Thanks for the heads up. The article did say that the S4 is immune to the exploit. But it shows how important it is to be careful about what you put on your phone and where you get it from.

Yeah, I kinda thought that too--
Nothing to worry about if you are on custom roms.
Good Point
Just found it interesting that only S4 not effected. Would assume any android phone, at least Samsung, coming out after S4 would have fix.

me too actually. good to know.
I'm on my g3 right now...ouch
testing something on g4. So if my g3 starts smokin i
I'll let ya know.
I think GS4's on Custom ROMS are still vulnerable.
I think its related to the Knox software installed by samsung on the device, but i think most custom ROMS have it removed because it interferes with some of the custom kernels and modifications etc.
You may be right on Knox--not up on the security stuff and is the Knox only on S4 atm
I don't think I would get rid of Knox unless it was giving me some of the errors, or maybe error, mentioned on other threads
Bingo..agreed.
so just got my O+O, should i be worry about any spyware?
Having a OnePlus One, or a Nexus, or a Samsung, etc..... they all use Android. Shouldn't have to worry about spyware at all. If you stick to downloading your apps from the Play Store you shouldn't have to worry. There are built in protection within the Play Store.

OnePlus One has nothing to do with Xiaomi. OnePlus One's International ROM is operated by Cynanogen Inc which is a U.S. company. https://cyngn.com/about/
ColorOS is being abandoned by OnePlus to pursue their own AOSP ROM as the default ROM for the Chinese variant, even then you can still flash CyanogenMod or whatever custom ROM you choose.
