Just poking through the news portal before work (I work at an electronics retailer that sells wireless) I came across a LOT of hate for the OEMs and their update schedule, even those who are very good at it (Sony, Samsung) and yet again realized the blinders of long-term XDA residency. A lot of people here complain about their updates, and with good reason sometimes (I'm looking at you, LG Thrill) but having worked with a LOT of people who are nowhere near the level of Android proficiency of the average reader of XDA, keep in mind a few things:
1. You as a high-level user make up a very low percentage of sales of mobile devices. 90% of those who buy (non-Nexus at least) smartphones, just want to make calls, text, and play games. For all intents and purposes, your opinion doesn't matter to the OEMs, because you make up a significant minority.
2. The average consumer can't deal with imperfect software. Most of us are content, or even more comfortable with, "beta status" software. We don't mind the occasional crash, having to flash a new nightly when the last one eats our bluetooth driver, etc. Unfortunately, for the average wireless user, this just gets in the way of phone calls, texts, or games.
3. Perfect software takes time. A LOT of time. Think about your favorite ROM. I'm going to take mine, AOKP. AOKP for JB-MR1 was made available in nightly form less than a month after the release of 4.2. A version considered "stable" took 6 months to release, and was available fully bug free for Nexus devices only (in my experience) and I still wouldn't have put my mother on it (actually I tried and she hated it, so we flashed her phone back to stock. She eventually traded out for an iPhone, and has loved it) Speaking of, even the iPhone takes time, and they're developing iOS 7 for 7 devices. My Nexus running AOKP nightlies has less issues than my iPhone 5 running iOS 7 Seed 4. Now take that and apply it to a company with 10-15 updatable devices, and you see where the problem lies.
I guess my point here is, the OEMs aren't developing for you. You don't care anyway, you probably didn't even run the stock software on your phone, you unboxed it, booted into fastboot, and unlocked your bootloader/flashed recovery/ROM/rooted/whatever before you even had a chance to. Just something I had to mention. I'm more than open to comments/criticism/general "stfu and go back to your iPhone fanboy"
Absolutely true; Most users don't even bother to update to begin with. They don't care that there is a new version out if the previous one does what they want it to do.
Hell, the average used doesn't even know what the android versions are called or which one their phone is running.
Indeed. Every time friends of mine get new smartphones (most of the time totally ignoring my advice and following the crowd) and I ask which android version their running they always say android 4 (or Android 2 back in the day) which obviously doesn't tell me squad. They really don't care, all they want is to fit in, so their either buying a S4 or i5.

I was discussing the same subject with a friend couple of weeks back. One thing he suggested that was, if updates are more, then average people would consider that your software is not up to mark and that is the reason why OEM is updating it often. And before pusing out an update, the OEMs have to test the update thouroughly. Apple can do it becuase they don't have 30-40 models in the market at any given point of time.
Having said that, the way Apple updates and takes more than 90% of userbase to latest version is an achievement in itself. That's because most iPhone users don't understand what is an update. They just press update button when the notification comes.

And because when Apple pushes an update, without fail it contains major improvements for the end user, no matter their level of skill. No one cares about 4.2/4.3 because the only real update between the two of them is the lockscreen, which takes a LOT of getting used to. I could take or leave 4.2 and 4.3, if I were on 4.1 I'd be content day-to-day. As is, I'm still on AOKP 4.2 and have no intention of ROM hopping to get the update sooner.

It doesn't help that Apple forces the update on you. My iPad stopped working and I had to reset it, but in order to reset it I was forced to upgrade to iOS 6. There was literally no way for me to stay on iOS 5 even though I wanted to. Damn you Apple.

I can tell you're new here, so I'll spare you the lecture for the most part, but telling things like it is != apple trolling. Get a job in wireless sales and you'll start to see the benefit of both sides, especially when no matter whether the manufacturer, their commission is food in your pantry.
I've been running LiquidSmooth 3.2 (4.4.4) practically since I got the phone nearly a year ago. The last few months it's been getting henky; occasional random reboots, particularly when playing games, plus sometimes games would crash or simply freeze. Angry Birds 2 (crashes, restarts), Assassin's Creed Pirates (freezes), Kill Shot (crashes), etc. I've been meaning to try a 5.1 ROM, but have been lazy about it.
Then sometime between going to bed last night and waking up this morning, something happened. No apps were updated (I have that turned off). But it rebooted, and my wallpaper reverted to the LiquidSmooth stock wallpaper. It works fine until the screen locks, and it won't wake up again. The capactive keys light up (but don't vibrate like they should), but the screen doesn't respond. After the screen times out, sometimes I hear the "click" of it locking (I have the lock timeout set to 5 seconds) over and over and over. This in itself is odd, because it didn't make that click before (I guess I disabled that). The only way I can do anything is to reboot it and keep the screen on. And when I reboot, the wallpaper reverts, yet everything else (icons, widgets) remains as it was. I'm completely baffled, because, like I said, I did nothing other than turn the screen off and go to bed, and when I woke up, it was doing this crap.
So I sad "#$%@" it", I'll back everything up and try BlissPop 5.1.1. Downloaded this plus GApps. I go into TWRP (2.8.7.0), wipe everything but internal storage, try installing BlissPop, and it fails. I happen to have an older version, and that fails too. The only thing that flashes is LS 3.2, and after flashing that, it has all my apps like it did before, but Play Services continually crashes.
I'm not a novice to flashing. I tried upwards of 30 different ROMs on my Nexus 4. and never ran into this problem. However, these were all 4.4.4 ROMs (although Titanium back-ups originated from a 4.2.2 device), as is the LS version I've been using on my OnePlus One. Is there something I'm missing/not doing going from KK to LP? Do I need to revert to stock, update to official OTA, then install my chosen 5.1 ROM?
As I'm typing this, I've restored the TWRP back-up I did before trying this other stuff, and now the screen keeps showing the LS wallpaper (off-centered) and then the homescreen to the left (2 out of 5), and back and forth and back and forth, not responding to touch.
W T F ?
OK, I see now that there indeed is a firmware change needed to go from KK to LP. Not gonna try it tonight - too drunk for that. I'm off work Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll give it a try then. Come to think of it, I should try the official CM12s too, to see if the crashes/freezes happen, in which case it might be a hardware issue and I'll have to send it back. Meanwhile I've got LiquidSmooth up and running again. Games still crash though, and irritatingly, the Play Store crashes every time I try to type in a search (but not if I use voice).
I still would like to know WTF happened in the first place, but I suspect I'll never know.

If you wanna flash firmware using twrp you'll need to downgrade to 2.8.6.0 it's the only one that works without issues. Cos12.1 is a good choice but don't use the flash-all script (in fastboot) without backing up your phone, you'll end up wiping everything. Unless you're encrypted there's no need to use 2.8.7.0

Thank you. Perhaps that's why the "update.zip" batch restore I created in Titanium wouldn't flash.
I admit I'm no expert with the OPO. When I got it I flashed LiquidSmooth and never looked back, so I'm out of date and undereducated. I was planning on reading everything and getting caught up in the near future, since as soon as I've got the cash I'm picking up a Nexus 6 ($300 for 64gb on Amazon right now) and I was going to play around with LP/MM ROMs on my OPO, but then this crap happened ahead of schedule. Kinda ridiculous that a few years ago I was hesitant to get a smartphone because they were so "huge", and now my OPO isn't big enough anymore.

I was also considering getting a Nexus 6 some time ago but it isn't a big enough bump to justify switching when I could just keep using the OPO and end year wait for SD820 Nexus. TWRP is a pain for a lot of users and they experience a whole host of issues that they can't seem to understand, such as several in this section titled no sim/no network and sometimes proximity sensor issues are related to not being able to flash firmware while on TWRP 2.8.7.0. You're still on 4.4 so you're even more clueless ?. Only two things you need to be aware of Lollipop uses a new firmware (baseband 241) and latest CM13 uses a different firmware too (c7-00011)

I was so excited with the Nexus 6 was coming out...until they announced the price, so I got the OnePlus One. Now the the price is reasonable (a freaking bargain, IMO) at $250/300 brand new, I want to get one and maybe sell my OPO. I read eBooks during downtime at work and that extra bit of screen makes a huge difference (it did when I had a Note 3, and the Nexus 6 is even bigger), plus I read with white text and black background will work great with AMOLED. I also like playing some games, and the big screen and front-facing speakers will be perfect for that. Sure, the latest and greatest would be nice, but I can't afford that. My dream phone would be the rumored Xperia Z5 Ultra, but it'll likely cost $800-900.

Does that apply to all Marshmallow ROMs or just CM/CM based ones?

Haven't heard of a Z5 Ultra but Sony is not my taste. I'll hold out for the Nexus at the end of this year and I'll probably buy it in 2017 (depends on finances) or get a 6P at bargain prices. I've also heard the Nexus 6 isn't great in battery life department so custom kernel will be a must
5.1.1 ROMs are rock stable right now so I'd suggest them over Marshmallow (numerous bugs at the moment but getting better every day).
The new modem is only if you want to run CM based ROMs which are the majority so you'd have to flash latest CM13 nightly first before flashing any other. If you use Omni or any ROM based off their source like Slimsaber or SAOSP etc they work with Lollipop firmware.

There have been rumors of a new Z Ultra for years ever since the first (and only) one. 6.44" screen, etc. I plan on getting a new tablet soon as well (Tab S 8.4 or Nexus Shield K1), but if they ever came out with a new Z Ultra (maybe they're waiting for the SD820), it'd be big enough to replace a tablet, yet still fit in my pocket. Maybe the Nexus 6 will suffice on its own.
Reviews I've read of the Nexus 6 say it has great battery life, but those are with scripts and can only simulate real-life usage. I'm not worried. Reading at work drains my batter the most, and with a white-on-black theme and AMOLED screen, I should be fine. I usually only play games at home, when it's plugged in anyway. Of course, I'll be playing around with custom kernels anyway. I never really bothered with them on my OPO (it already has smooth performance and great battery life), but probably will once I try 5.1 ROMs.
We're getting OT here, but it's my thread, so I can if I want!
I just got my honor 8 and was wondering if I will get system updates when I upgrade the to the beta nougat?
I think that before rooting you should ask yourself what do you want to achieve. I used to root every phone that I had, usually in first two weeks after purchase. But now I have a phone and a tablet , both from Huawei and neither of them is rooted. Why? Because I came to the conclusion that I gained nothing with root and lost a lot. First there is no fully functional custom kernel for Honor 8 and the same is true for custom roms. So what is the point of rooting then? To have troubles with any single OTA and cutting off any chance of using secure apps (like Android Pay, other payment methods, Pokemon..). And profited only a chance to get rid of some system apps? Which can be frozen and removed from the home screen instead without rooting the phone.
I believe Android changed a lot with Marshmallow and every new release seems to be a step in the right direction. Huawei's EMUI is not a disorder in the concept, rather an improvement in many functionalities of the stock system (call recorder, close all apps, eye comfort screen, themes, phone manager....).
Honestly, I'm missing only two things to declare this phone as perfect: internet calling (voip, native sip, volte) and dark mode. But none of these could be solved with rooting. Internet calling should be implement (better: retrieved as the aosp has it already) by Huawei and dark mode might be created either by the producer or a skilled themer. Without rooting.
You probably would once the official version of Nougat for the Honor 8 is released. Personally, I would wait for the official release of Nougat rather than use the Beta. As it has allot of bugs and missing features on it.

The beta's are actually pretty stable with very few bugs. And waiting on Huawei for the update is useless. Their updates are the slowest of any manufacturer I have ever seen. Use the Charles method and update as soon as possible. It's like a whole new phone.

I have had my honor 8 for a few months now and I too normally root etc my phones as soon as I get them.
I have not rooted this one and am not planning on for a good while.
Im on the beta N program and I find that this together with the themes and fonts that I can use with out root makes the phone do everything that I want it to.
I'm going to keep my one as stock and make use of the updates that have been promised.
I can't see the point in rooting my phone just coz it's seen to be the thing to do with Android phones.
I do however have other phones that are rooted and I change the Roms weekly and am constantly playing with them.
Perhaps I'm happier keeping this unrooted coz I'm getting my fix elsewhere.
My advice would be root your phone if you need it to do something that requires root other wise enjoy your phone.

I'm still betting Huawei/Honor is faster than any Cell Provider's OS Update releases. They take forever to come out as they have to wait for the device manufacturer to release their updates before they can modd them even further.
If your reason for rooting would be that you want Nougat now I would say wait. Personally I rooted my phone yesterday, and my reason was that i can't stand EMUI one day longer. I came from a Oneplus One and before that I have always rooted my phones. This time I waited for 4 weeks before I rooted, but could not live with the limited config settings I could change, so I rooted. No regrets.
But if you are fine with EMUI than take it easy and wait for the official update to Nougat.
Hey guys,
I think that most of the people "assume" that the B360 is the official Nougat update. But is there any official communication or has anyone received the B360 through a normal OTA update (not through HiCare)?
I have the L04 model and haven't received anything yet, and I just wanna make sure that the B360 is not a BETA to 'Charles' my way to it.
Thanks for your answers.

I was on the beta N program and am intouch with some body at Honor UK on Google+
I asked him if the 360 was a beta and he said no it was final !
As people who wasnt on the beta got the same update 360 I think we can say that it was the N update.
I would just wait to get yours OTA as it seems like some folk that have rooted Etc are having issues like rebooting etc
My phone is running very well on the 360.
Just wait you ain't missing no big deal

No mate I hadn't rooted my phone. Can't see the point, I have nothing that I really need the required root at the mo.
In the past I have always rooted my android phones soon as I got them but with this one I thought I would leave it as it is.
It's really worth thinking before you root your phone.
I must admit to having a nexus 5 which is of course rooted and has a different ROM running most days but then there are the custom ROMs to support it.
Perhaps that's why I'm finding it easier to leave my Honor 8 as it is

Times are changing. I rooted every phone I had and there were a lot of them down to Motorola Defy. And I still believe it was justified, I'd do it again. The original Android was so cumbersome in the past and there were so many better solutions from devs that staying with original system was unreasonable. Not to mention disgusting bloatware. But now, we have AOSP which serves its purpose and EMUI 5 makes it even better in many aspects. And the new functionality appeared with Marshmallow enables disabling unwanted apps cutting them out of any influence to the system and memory.
Yes, 360 is likely EMUI 5, which is equal Android 7.0. But, since Chinese models have 368 already, I think that Huawei is going further as it promised. How far? To Andromeda?
If your phone is bricked, you imperatilevy need to have a SD Card. Put full update on it an install it trough dload method.
When mine was bricked, I didn't found any other way to unbrick it.
Hello, so I can update to B360 through HiCare but I don't know if I should wait until final EMUI 5 because they recommend wiping and then I think I will have to wipe my phone twice... Anybody know if I have to wipe it again when final EMUI 5 comes out if I upgrade to B360 and wipe now?
Hi
I updated to nougat but I have slow Wifi speed. On other android devices on my network I have 80 Mbits but on Honor 8 max is 45Mbits/s.
What are Your Wifi speeds after nougat update?
Best regards

Hello,
I posted a question in the official hihonor community:
https://community.hihonor.com/message/10155
It's still not clear that B360 is indeed the official version.
From the reply: "There is no[t] one latest version for the FRD-L09" (sic)
I can only assume that some phones will receive B360, while others might go directly to a newer build. At least there is a confirmation that all the phones (in the UK) will receive the Nougat update, "eventually".
This Honor 8 forum is getting filled with threads asking the same questions! Do people know that there is a search button? Do people know that having 10 threads talking about the same things just pushes "power users" away? it's impossible to follow all threads so it will be more difficult to get help from people who can really help....

I think you are a little bit confused, b368 is for Mate 8, not Honor 8! It doesn't mean that Honor 8 will receive a version with the same name or version that other devices have.

Hello,
I haven't seen another thread asking if the B360 is indeed the official Nougat version for Honor 8, or clarifying it.
Most of the other threads deal with either how to install it via the Charles method, the Firmware Finder app, and there are plenty of threads for bugs and/or bricked phones.
I believe that a thread where it shows the confusion regarding this, instead of jumping into updating with mixed results, has value towards making users understand the implications of possibly installing a "beta" or a "release candidate" on their phone, and may save them time. Burying this information under tons of other questions in a generic "EMUI 5.0 released for Honor 8" is not as helpful.
Not trying to argue with you, I understand that power users might find all different threads difficult to follow, but I don't think it would be any better if everything regarding EMUI 5.0 was consolidated under one single thread with dozens of messages.
In any case, maybe finally Honor representatives would jump in this thread and clarify whether it is the final one or not

I think the title of this thread Honor 8 Android 7.0 + EMUI 5 oficial released! is quite clear and if took some time to read the following posts you would find that was not necessary to create one more thread speaking about the same thing.
You would also find that not everyone has received or will receive the update at the same time, but eventually everybody will receive it.

I read your thread but I'm sorry to say that there is no mention of an official source that the B360 is official, it's all based on your speculations.
I, and many other users, wouldn't risk and force a BETA or an RC on our phone, thus I created a simple straight-forward thread to know if Honor has announced anything about it, since I haven't found anything.
Ok I got my phone 4 MONTHS ago! I wanted to update my phone but no updates i contact honor support they tell me i need to wait upto 8 weeks 130A! I wait out the 8 weeks to get my update but i get nothing. I contact the support again and i ask what happend with the update i was told it had been changed for 130B i was told that if i wait to 21 march i would be getting an manual update so around 6 more weeks. I waited those weeks and guess what ah no they cannot do manual updates even tho they promised me that update will be sent the 21. Now 3 april i contact them they tell me 130A and 130B Never exisisted and that 140A is the update i will get in 8 weeks from 2 april meaning if they did not lie again a total of 6 months wait to get 1 update! That sickens me!
Dear Honor get to work on ur support!
Edit :Im still on 8.0.0.120A(C432)
[QRCODE]Just Update ME![/QRCODE]
Same here. I was told to wait until 22. March, and then to wait 8 more weeks. So now, I have to wait until May to get my first update, just like you.
I know the Honor is obligated to send updates every 3 months, so I'm asking what now? Do we really have to wait 6+ months? If so, this is definitely my first and LAST Honor phone. It's just frustrating.
Hello,
Love my phone, but without update I will change the phone next time. We don't have any security updates, so disappointed with Honor ?
I think all of us is disappointed. The view 10 is like a Ferrari without the engine.
Keep supporting the post I will send this to honor
Lack of updates has literally pissed me off. It is better not to buy Honor/Huawei phones no matter how compelling they seem
Shame sbout this company. If they really want to compete with the likes of Oneplus they really have to address the lack of support and otas.
I was close to buying this phone but after doing my research I can see the majority of customers are disapointed with lack of updates .
Firmware finder for Huawei in the app store now has several EU updates.
I've just bought op5t sending this crap back unusable video
Guys! Firmware finder added du updates! Huawei can't support us they can
I updated my Honor View 10 to 130 update through the Firmware Finder, but I'm not sure about the newer updates. It shows that there's a 141 update. Has anyone tried it?
For the moment it's not possible to update with FFH. Il tried several times without success
i am on B130 with Huawei Firmware finder with the Proxy trick and it shows B140 and B141

I fully agree! It's April now and the phone shows an Android security patch level of January the first. The support team told me I might have to wait until June (!) to receive an update. Additionally there is no fully working custom ROM supporting every feature of the phone so far. And maybe there will never be one. Next phone will definitely be an OnePlus again.
yup, i also wonder about this.
i know honor/huawei is doing a great job in keeping the phone up to date with latest patch, but the ota rollout process is quite slow and most of the phone did not get it on time. Currently, my view 10 is still stuck with January security patch despite newer patch for march n april is already available for a long time?
i understand ota is roll out in batch, but it is quite unreasonable if we need to wait for a few month just get a security update, by that time new update will also become available and we need to wait again and this keep going on.
i hope the ota rollout can be improve.
I don't understand Honor, my wife have Honor 7x and this morning received second update... I have honor view 10 and nothing...
I wanted to buy the Honor View 10 in two weeks for my birthday. I have had the Honor 7 so far. I was happy with the phone but not happy with the update policy. I thought this changed? Now i read this and i start to doubt if i should get another honor phone when it still takes so long for the updates and patches to be delivered.

Was seriously considering the v10 myself but their update policy is terrible.Im not going to get one now.Looking at the Nokia 7+ which has Android one and guaranteed updates for 2 years for android versions and 3 years of security patches.I will wait to see how much tbe Oneplus 6 costs first though.
