I'm thinking about switching to cricket wireless. How is your general impression on cricket? Is it exactly same as att network other than different APN?Is it okay to put ATT in build.prop?
I heard their 4g is capped at 8M. Is it still enough to surf the web?
I would appreciate your input!

Yes it's AT&Ts network.
1Mbps is good enough for basic browsing. So it just all depends on what you do.

I am using d850 on cricket. Good att coverage. Data capped at 8mb, plenty enough for browsing. Fast enough for Pandora, youtube. One downside, you won't be able to get at&t Ota update.

Thank you for your help. I guess I'm fine with OTA update as I use a custom rom anyway. I guess I'm switching soon. Having a bit of problem with signal reception with D850 (like 10% weaker than other phones), I can't rely on a weak t-mobile signal anymore...

I speculate D850 modem driver is not properly written. When I was on stock, I consistently clocked in at 8mbps. The wifi is also consistently over 50mbps (I have over 50 mbps wifi at home). When I upgraded to Lollipop (20f, I think), data went straight to heck at 2-3mbps. Wifi became sporadic, at times, it would hit 50mbps, at times it would drop to 5mbps. So I reflashed and drop back down to kitkat, and the data performance is restored. The signal strengths are the same on both kitkat and lollipop.
D850 still seems to be better than iPhone 6, iphone 6 plus reception wise. In my office, an iphone could barely get 4G/LTE. I can still get 200-300kbps on LTE, though that doesn't mean much.

Wow that's surprising. I guess these smart 'phones' forgot what they really are... I reflashed Kitkat modem over lolipop rom but yes indeed the signal strength is still poor. I'm at least glad to know that this isn't me only.

I've been with Cricket / AIO for about two years now and I love it. I have saved a ton of money on my monthly service and have had zero problems with the network speed. The data speeds are capped, but I can tell you with utmost confidence that it has not affected my ability to browse or stream. I stream Youtube, Netflix, Hulu and other video services in HD with no hiccups or slow downs. I've also used Skype without any problems.
The only downside is no OTA's, but if you flash custom roms this will not be an issue for you. I seem to recall reading that if you pop in an AT&T sim card, you can get the OTA's if you want them, but I have not tried this and cannot confirm.
Does anyone know if their is a way to flash an OTA?

I can confirm, at the minimum, you can flash to 20f. I bought an AT&T Gophone sim card (about $2 for micro on ebay). Just activate the card, no need to put any $ in the card. Once you activate the card, you have 26 days to top up with any $ before the card is deactivated. After activation, insert card into your phone, turn on wifi, update began almost instantly for me.
I was able to update only 20f. I think there was a 20l with Volte, but I wasn't able to get that. Never had the chance to get 21q (current version). Read somewhere, to get 20l, 21q, your imei must be in AT&T database. When I activated the sim, I entered 000000000. If I ever try ota again with a new sim card, I'll input my correct imei and see if I get the other updates.
Cost to you is about $2-$5 (depend on availability at ebay and amazon).
On Cricket, no problem. On 5.11 using CM 12.1, so updates from AT&T no problem. Also you can flash stock ROM if you wish.
I'm also on Cricket. D850, NOT unlocked, running rooted Lollipop. I used to be on Boost Mobile, and I loved their service, I only switched to Cricket because I wanted to use the G3.
*raises hand* I call the UK constantly from the US. With Cricket I get 10GB of data and 1000 international minutes for 70 dollars. Cricket is owned by AT&T.
The only downside is that they cap their 4G data to 8mps. That's plenty for me, but your mileage may vary.

After getting very poor speeds, I never got above 4.1, I stopped in my local AT&T shop.
Turns out that when I went from my Blackberry to the Infuse, they never put me on the 4G plan, only on the unlimited data plan.
I haven't been up to Nashville to test whether my Infuse is now connecting at AT&T's 4G, but I just wanted to let everyone know. That if you got grandfathered in, they may not have put you on the 4G unlimited plan.
4g umlimited plan is just what their calling their data plans for "4g" devices right now. There 4g network is just a spruced up 3g network and since we use 3g sims it doesnt matter what your plan is you should get faster speeds if they backhauled the network ware you live.

so you doubt there is a 4g data plan because you have had the same sim card for 3 years and get 3g data speeds???
bottom line there are different data plans for 4g hspa+ data, (same price but different feature code/provisioning) those who dismiss this idea as some kind of att conspiracy theory, well i dont know what to tell you, but maybe you should put some tape over the front facing camera on your phones so "they" cant watch you!

Speed tests are not that great...
Well i have noticed that the two major speed test apps are not really that good testing. They are too all over the place, but i can tell my speeds are gaining every day a little bit. 4G is in my area, which i am not supposedly connecting to it fully because i have to wait a while, and I am on the uckd5 modem which seems to work best for me. What is the best speed test app?
I've thought about flashing the uckd5 modem just to see if going back makes a difference.

D5 isn't going to give you better speeds just by virtue of it being the stock modem that came with the phone...
E3 is supposed to be an improvement on D5... same with G3, but that's it's own special case, since it is the Rogers modem. and H1 is supposed to be an improvement over E3.
i have noticed that they are all very similar when it comes down to it. i get the same speeds with each of them, signal is the same within 10 dbm, and call reception is not different enough among them to notice.
too many variables at play (atmosphere, tower usage, time of day, etc.) to really make a fair determination that one of them is much better than the other.
but yeah, i guess my point is that you won't see better speeds just because you are switching to the modem that the infuse came with, and is "supposed" to be using.

Those are Rogers GB based ROM's, which are known to have HSPA+ problems.

not a coincidence at all. that's how it should be. if you are truly supposed to be getting 4g speeds in your area, you probably won't see those speeds on a GB based ROM until we no longer have to use Rogers GB as the base for those ROMS.
once the infuse gets the GB update, and the ROMS are based on that update, speeds should be what they are supposed to be.
but your issue is the ROM you are on - not the modem you are using.
My thought.
I am running infused v2.1 with the kd5 modem. I see that the longer i stick with one modem, speeds start increasing. This happens a lot faster with the original modem. Does any one else notice this?

hi all. I myself have a moto atrix 4g on att. i am familiar with rooting unlocking bl and flashing. so i decided to help my friend with his nexus s 4g unrooted, locked, on stock sprint 4.0.4 build IMM76D, baseband D720SPRLC1, kernel 3.0.8.
last night I unlocked bl, rooted and installed cm9 posted by burnsra as I saw it was the most popular cm9 by replies or views. now all this started because my atrix was having double the reception compared to ns4g in everything wifi, network, data. so i thought cm9 would do something good here. but after installing it successfully the wifi signal is at 2 bars the data reception is at one bar, the 4g reception non existent.
Is there any new baseband that would enhance the reception of wifi, sprint network 3/4g?
right now I am on baseband D720SPRLC1.
test i did: i installed speedtest.net app on both phones. i was 10 feet from my home router N with no walls, doors in between. ns4g was always 5-7 mbps download, slower than atrix and almost 2mbps slower in upload.
never mind for data speed. ( i know its apple to oranges, att/sprint) but still atrix was 10 times faster on att hspa+ than ns4g on sprint with 4g on.
wifi and network bars are most of the time at 2 bars.
is there anything left to do to make it better in reception?
any ideas suggestions are welcome.
thanks
You can try different basebands. Depending on your area, whatever you flash can either improve or worsen the signal. I've heard Sprint doesn't have the greatest in terms of 4G speeds. I'm no expert on network speeds and such, but I think it also have to do with whatever technology is being used for the networks. HSPA+ is gonna be faster I believe. My G2 has faster download speeds than my NS IIRC. I haven't done a real world comparison lately. I think my G2 was getting like 10 down a few years ago on campus. Lol. My NS only gets like 5 or 6.
Actually, you answered your own question ... it is an apples to oranges comparison. Wimax download speeds of 5-7 sound about right, and uploads will be slower. There's no question that Sprint is way behind AT&T and Verizon with their advanced data networks. In the meantime, what you experienced is just about all there is for now. The LC1 radio is the most current.

There really isn't anything that can be done to make much of a difference. I flashed the latest CM9 nightly, checked my 4g speeds and they are in the 3-4 range ...and I can see the Sprint tower across the road. Most of us who are hanging onto Sprint, in spite of the service ... are doing so because of the unlimited data. But, Sprint really needs to break out the LTE soon, or there may be a massive exodus.
First of all, my LTE works fine, this is only an issue with the 3G radios. Basically, I often have issues with 3G actually sending and receiving data. When it does, it is slower than 1X for me. It drains the battery at crazy rates such as 20%/hr with little to no use. This has happened regardless of rom, although now I am on the stock f1 update and unrooted. I bought this phone used so there's no hope of a CLNR. I've had it "fixed" by samsung twice and nothing has changed. Any ideas? I have an upgrade but I'm waiting for the One or the 5S and REALLY don't want to use it on a phone I wouldn't be happy with.
Same exact problem here. 4G works fine. 3G is essentially useless. Often when it changes to 3G, I wish it would just go to 1X so that at least it would be functional. I've never really found a solution. The other day my phone was in 3G and I tried to send a text msg with a picture. It took almost ten minutes. Completely useless.
Friends with 3G Verizon phones never have any problems. They always get a solid 3G connection. I used to be with Sprint (useless) and set my Evo to roam on Verizon because the 3G was so much more responsive and quick than Sprint. Not seeing that with my S3.

Forgot to mention... My wife's also got an S3. Mine's rooted with CleanROM and LK1 modem. Her's has the latest update. She has the same issues with 3G. She also had them on MB1.
Fortunately my phone doesn't flip over to 3G often. But when it does, I just stick it back in my pocket, because it won't do anything useful until it switches back to 4G.
I've never found the answer to this problem, but I'd really like to. I understand that this is a 4G phone, but it should be able to fall back to 3G with no problems.

Theoretically AOSP ROMs should have absolutely no effect on data or voice since they don;t touch the radio firmware.
I was in a 3G zone this evening and did a speedtest.
23 kbps down. It died when trying to run the upload portion of the test. Friends with regular 3G phones routinely get 800 kbps - 1200 kbbs down.
I agree. It has to be the phone. And given that it seems to happen across multiple radios and only to some people, it's probably hardware related. Doesn't matter when I get 4G. Sucks when I can't.
I'm going to be at camp for a week soon and I only get 3G there so I'm strongly considering buying a used 4S until a new phone comes.

I don;t think its a Samsung problem, more like a Verizon wide issue. If you look in the verizon user forums, all the Iphone and HTC and Moto folks complain about the same things.
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/784496
I don't think so. Not only are they not complaining about just 3G, my friends' phones work fine.
Not only that, but my GNex I had before this somehow consistently had 2 mbps dl speeds on 3g.
Friends on Verizon with 3g only phones get excellent speeds where I am at. Verizon 3g is not the problem around here. On 3g phones, it is fast and responsive. When switching from Sprint, I went with Verizon based on the quality of its 3g.

Too bad you have to rely on something else that you pay for independently for your phone to be able to do its job. These phones should work on 3G. I have to imagine that there are some who don't have 4G that have to rely on 3G. Maybe they just don't get this phone, or get it and return it?
Is anyone anyone else constantly losing and regaining signal? I just noticed it once I got home from work. I'm unlocked and rooted. I updated the PRL and profile. I noticed the signal lose after this, but I wasn't paying much attention before I got home.
Anyone have any advise before I RMA this thing?

I have experienced random signal drops, even when I have full bars. It might only happen when it's switching between LTE/HSPA, but I haven't really payed attention.
Sprint is doing a lot of backend tweaking to support the Nexus 5s. Lots of performance changes hour by hour as they try and set up the network to allow unlocked Nexus phones.
First time allowing a phone on their network that's not sold them so these are all part of the growing pains. Just keep giving Sprint productive feedback so they can iron out the issues.
I went to the online chat and the guy apparently "refreshed the network and fixed the glitch." I thought he was full of ****, but I haven't lost bars yet ^.^

I have been having the same problem at work and I can trace it to switching between network types. LTE to 3G to 1x. At home I'm good to go. I think it may be because Sprint installed a micro cell in our building and it's not LTE compatible.

Might just be a not so great radio software/firmware at the moment. Most likely future updates will make it better. Now, that doesn't help you in the interim but that's most likely it.
my worst fear.. LG's are notorious for dropping signal. I know this because my old LG Optimus G did it, and many others had this problem as well. You can google or look at my old posts.
I ran a Network Signal Pro log last night and it was a constant signal/no signal. Not sure if it was just voice or voice and date. I have attached it, if someone who knows how to read that better than me could look at it that would be great. I'm running another log right now, will be 60 minutes with a 30 poling rate. I'll post that later. The signal is pretty weak since I am in a hangar at an airport. So we will see how it is.

Why should any "tweaking' be required? GSM networks have let on all phones for years. It would seem that once Sprint allows a phone on the network, it should be in the same position as a GSM network with respect to phones that it did not sell.

Ah - other side of the country. Didn't see you had it in your profile as well, my bad.

it isn't only Sprint, it happens in Rogers and Fido in Canada as well. So I believe it is LG

I feel it may be a sprint issue only due to it constantly losing connection of EHRPD but it being fine now that I on on EVDO A at work. It is the same radio and antenna for EHRPD and EVDO A, right?
I'm going to Salt Lake City this weekend, I'll have to see how it preforms there.
I noticed that the data speeds on my OP6 have become increasingly slow, especially so over the last couple weeks on my OP6. Tonight, I'm posting this from a desktop because my OP6 is unusable without wifi, unable to do even google searches without extremely long wait times.
I'm getting between 5kbps and 50kbps (in small bursts). Am I being throttled?

Have you asked T-mobile? Possibly your plan mandates throttling speed after using certain amount of data, even on "unlimited" data plan. I don't use much data, may be 6-8gb per month and have not noticed reduced speed in the DC area.

I'm on the prepaid 10 gb plan. I've used no where near that limit, but recently had to get a new SIM card to get a lower rate for the exact same service. That is when I really started to notice. I'll call them.

So far, not so good. Two calls in, one online support ticket unanswered.
I cannot access my account online either. Was told I would need to use a NEW EMAIL address to access it due to the difference between the "legacy system" and the new "rebellion" plans. Unreal. I refused and let them know they need to fix it. I'm not using a different email for T mobile compared to the hundreds of other accounts and services on my main personal email.
Also, speeds are still slow. I got a whopping 9mbps download on one speed test, 10 mbps upload. But since then, speeds have been lower then 5mpbs in either direction. Tried across a variety of tests like speedtest.net, dslreports.com, and fast.com
The second support guy said they refreshed my number's signal and I turned the phone off for a little over 5 minutes while they did this as instructed. Turn it back on, no difference yet.
They will call me back in 2 hours (like they said they would do yesterday when I did the same thing as above - never got a callback.) Here's hoping. Support is based somewhere offshore like the Philippines. Hard to understand them.
If they don't call back or if I don't see improvements later today, I'll consider this strike two - and go to a store to voice my concerns. If the store cannot fix it, I'm going to AT&T once my month of prepay expires on the 28th and stop my autopayment. Maybe I'll just sell this thing and get a OP7 or OP7 pro and move back to Verizon if I have to. I'd hate to do that - but I effectively have a paperweight when not on wifi.
Try plugging your SIM into another phone, or try using a friend's SIM in yours. You will be able to tell pretty fast if it is your network carriers fault or your phone's fault.
Just to test, I swapped sim from my wife's phone who is on mint mobile (pre paid mvno of t-mobile). I got true LTE speed (around 16 mbps) which is comparable to my own t-mobile sim. IMO, it's not pre paid or post paid issue. Like suggested in above post, try another sim card. There is a remote possibility that you got an old 3G sim pre paid card. I hope you get it sorted out soon.

I'm going to a store to get a new SIM. I chatted with someone at Tmobile's T-Force (US based social media support) and they think it could also be a SIM issue, and that I'm not being deprioritized as far as they can tell.
Got a new SIM. Instantly got full LTE speeds in the store. Of course, the instant I got home, speeds dropped. It must be a combination of the old SIM, my location, or something else. I give up. I never use LTE at home or work, so it will really depend on where I am. If it keeps staying this slow when I'm out - I think I'll go to AT&T prepaid for a couple months and see how that network is around me.
I went around to a few places tonight and it was night and day compared to my home/work. Getting speeds that are very fast - nearly 100mbps down in one test. I never saw those speeds before, so the new SIM really helped. Still slow at home/work - but those locations have never given me the best speeds, so I'll rely on wifi there anyhow.
Consider this solved. If you have the same issue - get a new SIM.
