I had to jump over some stupid fence today at my work (didn't want to go all the way around), so i asked my friend to hold my universal while i jumped.
maybe i should have held it myself, because the universal slipped from her hands, and fell down the 3 story building, hitting many many stairs on the way down.
from a first glance i thought its the end of my beautiful relationship with my uni.
but actually after opening it up and checking its insides - it looks pretty okay! nothing seems to be broken or loose...
the problem is: is won't even start. so im trying to discover where malfunction is.
i've tried:
Switching batteries
Plugging it in to a power source (computer / wall)
Dismantling body and screen, tightening all of the connectors
Bootloader mode - not showing anything
Connecting with MTTY - but i can't even get it to connect
Turned on, waited for 5 mins and called it to see if it'll ring (to eliminate screen problems) - forwards to voicemail
Nothing worked, the screen is always blank.
when i plug in a power source, a red light flashes REALLY quickly, and then goes off, after that nothing happens.
the only thing that gave me a clue its still alive somewhere inside - when i plugged it to my computer, windows alerted me i plugged in an unknown device, even when i tried to put it in BL and connect again.
Does anyone have a clue what i can do next to find where the problem lies, and bring my love back to life???
please, i need help on this.
Mine fell a few feet from my hand to the (concrete) floor and was the same - no signs of trauma but completely dead, aside from a light when connected to the charger.
I think the damage will be to the mainboard, so it's a either a case of getting a new board and fitting it, or buying another universal and selling the dead one for parts. I opted for the latter.
My Condolences!! as long you can not find some lose cable or what so ever I believe you will not able to bring your "love" back to alive.
After connecting to your Computer RED light and Your computer doesn't recognize the Device indicates major issue.

i don't know anyone who deals with jtag, but maybe it'll be a good idea to look for a private repair lab which works with jtag.
i guess for a small amount of money they could help me find the problematic part.
i wanted to avoid sending it over to a some random repair lab, because they might turn out as just some amatures and tell me that the whole main board needs to be replaced, instead of a specific part...
so i'll start with some searching

mine fell from my pocket and red led pops up only when connected to the charger.. i sent it to ppctechs.. they put it under the infrared oven and nothing happened, so its not lose solder nor connectors nor nothing.. its the mainboard, its hard for it to be replaced as far as component level goes.. but who knows.. personally i think just sell it for parts.. sorry, thats what i did and boutght a new one off ebay for 400

Hi,
My son got a hold of my HTC One X and decided to throw it into the bath. Basically the screen was black and the only sign of power was the BACK and HOME light where lit, but not the RECENT.
I took it apart and let it dry the best I could but unfortunately I ripped one of the ribbons near the top of the mobile.
I have attached photos.
1) Is my phone completely screwed or is there a way I can fix this?
2) The ribbon I ripped can it be easily replaced?
3) The lights from the pictures appear instantly when I plug in the battery and stay on sometimes flickering now and again. The back of the phone also becomes extremely warm.
All help is greatly appreciated and I hope I can fix this phone as I still have 12 months contract on it

It's hard to tell what ribbon cable you ripped from that picture. I'll check my One X at home to see what cable that is when I get home but realistically, you'll have to replace the part to the ribbon cable that you tore as you can't just mend those cables. And there's a really high chance you'll need to replace that motherboard from water damage. It's probably cheaper to buy a new phone.

If it's been submerged like that even the parts probably have very little value....
If it happened in your house maybe your home insurance could cover it? might be worth checking the policy.

Sorry to say but it's not worth fixing or selling. I'd look into that insurance if you've got a home insurance policy.
That cable appears to go to the screen so you'd be looking at replacing the entire unit if you were to try and fix it.

The best I have it just now is when I plug just the motherboard into the battery it sits with the 2 out of 3 lights on.
I still have 12 months on the contract and the phone is worth around £400 so I don't mind spending up to £100 to fix it.
Also, I tried plugging just the motherboard into my usb port on my laptop but the phone won't detect, the motherboard heats up but nothing shows on the computer.

It would cost you over £200 to fix it. Would be cheaper to buy a nexus 4. Or a used phone if you're into that.
That motherboard is dead. It would cost hundreds of £ again to retrieve the data on there you'd have to get a data recovery specialist. Their fee can range from hundreds to thousands depending on how difficult it is to retrieve the data.

I will put it on Ebay as I seen some selling for parts etc.. try and get something for it, then just pick up a cheap phone to see out my days of this contract.
I seen a lot of good reviews on a product called "Reviveaphone" which is a bag of solution that clears the minerals causing harm to the motherboard etc.

This is directly quoted from their website. I think that maybe if you hadn't turned your phone on, your chances would be a lot higher. At least according to them.

I took the phone apart and dryed it completely before I tried turning it back on.
Also, bit off topic but do you know if you unlock a phone during its contract does it effect terms and conditions?
The cable you tore goes to the digitizer. Unfortunately, you would have to replace both the lcd and digitizer which are fused together.
I would suggest ordering 99% isopropyl alcohol and either cleaning the motherboard using alcohol and toothbrush, or soaking the motherboard in the alcohol. Of course, it might already be completely fried.

My Moto G 16 GB (XT-1033) (purchased in India on 6th Feb 2014) suffered a hardware problem. The phone had an exposure to water soon after its purchase. As a result the phone restarted and SIM1 wasn't working. After few hours, the SIM1 was working and phone resumed normal functions.
After nearly three months, the phone which was lying in the couch was vibrating. I wasn't aware for how long the phone was vibrating and when inspected there was no incoming call and the phone was running very low on battery. Thinking that this could be a software glitch, I attempted to restart the phone. The phone was still vibrating even after switching it off. Due to low battery, the phone wasn't starting at all. The continuous vibration depleted the remaining charge and eventually the vibration strength reduced and soon became dead.
When I tried to charge the phone the phone started to vibrate and the LED was glowing solid at the very moment I connected the charger. Both symptoms were off when I detached the charger immediately. I left the phone overnight to charge in this condition. In spite of overnight charge, the phone does not start. I tried the normal and safe mode start up options.
When I approached the authorised service centre, I was told that the phone has water damages and corrosion has occurred. Their only solution was to replace the whole circuit board which would cost roughly 80% of the cost of the new phone. They said firmly that water damages are not covered under warranty.
At this position, can any other suggest what best can be done at least expense to have my phone back?
My few options:
Replace the circuit board
Cannibalize the defective phone by selling its spares like display and digitizer, its battery, etc.
Buy another damaged (other than circuit board) phone and swap the circuit board.
Some other suggestion.
I am almost heartbroken for both loss of money as well as lack of phone. Any solutions and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea how you managed that. I put my phone in the sink, and it's perfectly fine, nothing damaged on it. What on earth did you do with your phone then?
Keep the mobile..Sell the parts after a year or two.. Meanwhile get another moto g or maybe a e

I just washed the phone under running water. By washing I opened the tap to allow water to flow slightly more than dripping and made the water to fall on the touch screen and took possible care to not to allow the water to go into any holes.
I had dealt in detail about what happened in another post.
I could have wiped the phone with slight damp cloth rather washing like this - but the words in Flipkart about the water repellent and the videos in YouTube about submerging the phone.
I still doubt this as water damage the actual problem occurred two months after the exposure! The justification what the service personnel gives is that the water damages are not troublesome immediately, but rather it takes time as corrosion spreads. But whether the actual cause is water damage or not, the service personnel might have used it as an excuse to avoid spending too much time in troubleshooting and passed the buck to me.
As far as I could open my phone and see for any corrosion, I could not spot any - I agree, I do not have magnifying glasses and I am not trained.

Best thing is go to another service centre and tell them that your phone is not turning on. Don't tell about water and all they might charge you. Just tell them that it's not turning on.

I also have a similar issue, My phone was water damaged, kept it in rice for almost 3 days. Kept it in changing for a while, tried pressing the power button for 2-3 minutes, I didn't get any boot options but it showed 0% Charging and then showed Motorola Logo and the screen goes off again. I tried several times but same issue. It goes up till Motorola logo which shows 'M and powered by android' then again goes off and shows 0% Charging. :crying:
I feel there's still life in my Moto G as it shows the charging % and motorola logo but doesn't turn on. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Rajen,
Probably as you say your phone might be having life left. To me it appears like a completely drained battery that is scaring you.
My suggestion is to use a high amperage charger (like any tablet charger or any phone charger where the output amps is in the order of 2A or 1A) for a short period of time, until you see at least 10 to 20% of battery charge. Do not attempt to switch on the phone until at least that amount of battery is charged. If you still do not able to start up, take it to your local experts (not the service centre guys, unless it is in warranty and they did not reject your claim due to water damage).
In my case the authorised service centre guys had my phone for 2 weeks and finally said I had to change the motherboard, which Motorola had not authorised to do for phones not covered under warranty (in my case though it was only 3 months old, it was declared to be not under warranty due to water damage). At the end of 2 weeks they returned the phone as it is. I tried to fix it in Ritche Street (a market place for electronics in Chennai, India) and got it fixed in 5 hours for Rs.1100 (after heavy bargain).
First try my higher amperage charger suggestion and if still not working try as I did.

Thanks a lot Narayanan. My phone is also in warranty as it's only 5 months old and I got a same response from Motorola Service Center. They kept my phone for 3 days and said I need to replace a motherboard which is almost equal to the phone cost so I tool the phone. I will try as you said to use a higher amperage charger. But how do I know if the charger is of 1A or 2A ? Is there any way I can check that? I will try that option. Or else will go to some local sercice center as you said and hope they can fix it.

You have to look for output parameters, which will be typically mentioned as "Output: 5v,2A DC" the words 2A means it can supply current up to two ampheres. Regular use of this high amps charger will heat up the battery and will reduce the life. But it is useful to resuscitate such a flat batteries as well.

Hey Narayanan, Now when I tried to press the volume down button for 3-5 sec and pressed power button it showed me the Boot Screen now. It wasn't showing yesterday. But again whenever I choose any of the option like 'Normal Boot' or 'Factory' or 'Barcode' , it always shows the battery 0% and again goes for charging.
To me it looks like it is a battery issue. I will ordered 5v 2A DC charger as none of my friends have a android tab . Once I get that, I wil try to charge and see what happens.

Hi, I saw this video. Thanks for sharing this. This is exactly what is happening to my phone. However, I am unable to charge my phone using 5V 2A charger also.
I have a Samsung 5V 2A charger for Galaxy S3 Phone from my friend but that didn't help. I kept it for charging for almost 3 hours and it still showed as 0% Charging..
I think I will have to go to some local service center here in bangalore. Anything else you could suggest?

If your phone is not under warranty and if you can have another moto G or E, you can temporarily swap the batteries to check where the fault is. If the swapped battery gets charged in your phone well, it simply means your battery is defective. Else, viscera.

Same issue with MOTO E (Need local service guy details)

I have the same issue with my Moto E. But, Its not just water. It was in beach. I had the phone in my pocket and got strolled in beach. Realized the stupidity in the first two minutes and dried it out. Initially, i thought there won't be any issues as i have seen some youtube videos of phone submerged in water for 5 minutes.
But, at first phone showed the Motorolo logo (With powered by Android below). And then nothing.. I tried to charge it with motorolo charger and the high amp chargers. But no use. Now, i don't see that logo as well. Later found out the issue is only with the Screen. Yes, when i called the phone it did ring.
Visited the authorized service center (Trident, Nungambakkam, Chennai). After two days of inspection they reported both the motherboard and the display has died and its better to get a new Moto E than repairing it Its completely insane considering that the phone is only three months old. I am yet to get the device back and planning to visit few local service centers before declaring to rest the device in peace.
It would be really helpful if you could share the Ritchie street repair center details.

Hi Vignesh,
The service center in Ritche street is known as "Crescent Cell Phone Service". Their contact numbers are: +919840172678 and +914443227750. Their address would be "13/38 Wallers Road, Off Mount Road".
If you approach Ritche street and Mount road junction from LIC/Spencer side, the road on your left soon after subway entrance and India silk house is the Wallers road. The first notable shop at Wallers road is Sony service centre and in that side is this shop. This is a very small shop, probably of three feet wide and very easy to miss.
They first analyse the device and will give you an estimate. If you both agree for it, they will proceed for repair. If the repair is not successful, they will not charge you at all. The rate they quote will be on high side and can be bargained only by pleading.
In my case they did not fix the issue, rather they simply disabled the vibrator. When they asked Rs.1400 for that, I negotiated that had if they fixed the issue I am happy to pay the amount and I am not happy to pay Rs.1400 just for disabling the vibrator. After heated argument they did not oblige and fortunately I had only Rs.1100 with me. When I said I have that much only, they accepted Rs.1100.

I am yet to go to a local service center in Bangalore. Higher amp charging did not work for me. I will go to SP Road in bangalore soon(known for its local electronic market) and see if I get lucky. All the best Vignesh.

Check out the disassembly videos on youtube . Disassemble the phone , dry out all the components and dry with rubbing alcohol and give it a try it may work .

I feel there's still life in my Moto G as it shows the charging % and motorola logo but doesn't turn on. Any help will be appreciated.

Let me tell you what you did wrong . had my previous experiences with water issues with Xperia ( non waterproof ) devices.
If there is a water damage, there is a hidden light in the phone which will glow in red, due to which the service centre guy can tell about water damage just by looking the phone or behind the back cover , this light is not noticeable under normal conditions.
The problem with water is not damaging your motherboard, its that when you powered on the device after getting wet, water is present in the battery terminal or openings like sim slot or micro sd slot, so from there short circuiting can occur. In my case the phone was not running on battery but running directly on ac power ( that time battery was removable ) . due to water in slots like micro sd, my charging circuit got fried, and company will try to replace the whole circuit rather than replace the charging circuit ( cost 1-2 thousand in total ).
So, my opinion is to get philips screwdriver and open the battery to see if water is still accumulated there or any burnt out circuit is there, and ask them specifically to change the charging circuit. if that doesnt solve your problem, then you can purchase motherboards from ebay.com , you will get a good deal and good stuff too ( they ship to india ).
When you go to them just tell that your phone is not charging. act like you don't know about water, for that you must open the phone and dry it out. using blower ( from a distance , as blower gives a warm air ).

Moto E is less water resistant than Moto G .
And beach water is salty ( means ions to conduct electricity ) and in that case both Moto G & E are Zero resistant.

I tried to fix it in Ritche Street (a market place for electronics in Chennai, India) and got it fixed in 5 hours for Rs.1100 (after heavy bargain).
First try my higher amperage charger suggestion and if still not working try as I did.

Dont try anything funny on a wet and dead phone, presence of moisture or faulty circuit can lead to bigger problems.
It was my second time I have quickly washed my phone under tap water. When it gets wet the Smart Connect app that I use (When plugging in headset, it starts playing music and gives vibrating notification) starts glitching, no wonder, the phone because of water thinks it has headset plugged in and then it goes on-off until I blow in the hole to get the water out. Today I gave it a quick wash and all seemed fine. Then after some time the screen started flickering. Like you press the power button very fast and turns screen on and off. Okay.. weird, never done that. Then the button stops working altogether. Fingerprint reader works, absolutely everything else as well, did the *#service#* and the one from setting > support > diagnostics. And everything works, calls and everything. But the power button does not. What it does is when I press vol. up then the vol goes up and power menu comes up that you get from holding down the power button and screen goes off and on. It doesn't work like regular power button press but it quickly turns off and on again.
What I did now is I set hairdryer next to it without heat on lowest speed to blow on the volume and power buttons. Hopefully it goes normal but if it doesn't...
Do I have any luck going back to the store for warranty? I mean it's supposed to be water resistant. I didn't submerge it, just running water from tap for about 20 or so seconds maybe even less.
I don't think it is covered under warranty as Sony specifically states on its site and disclaimers that the phone is NOT waterproof.
Water damage is therefore not covered. U can try though, but I'm afraid ur out of luck.
U can try to submerge the phone in a cup of rice for 24/48 hours.
An hairdryer would only condense the water inside the phone.
Make sure to remove sim and SD card tray first and leave the flap opened before putting it into rice.

Strange bequse on the swedish sony site they say ip68 class.
That it will survive a dip in the bathtub or being able to wash the phone in rinsing water.

No I haven't unlocked it yet. Still seems too tedious.
Yup. IP68 means submersible for something like 30 mins in clean water for 1 metre depth (or more depending on manufacturers status) if I remember right
So they can't say it's ip68 and then void any warranty if it gets wet because that's false advertising surely

I would still wait a few days, I expect the buttons to sort themselves out, maybe try the rice method.
On the other hand that won't 'fix' your confidence in the waterproof capabilities of your device..

Took it to the store and they happily took it, saying it should be waterproof and the dead power button shouldn't happen with little water. It takes up to 2 weeks in warranty service so I'll update when I got some news.
Got a Galaxy S4 mini with busted screen and busted proximity sensor as a temporary phone.. At least I'm able to root the crap out of it

Got my device back, working, motherboard and a ribbon cable replaced. Asked the girl in the shop if I should now assume that the device is now not waterproof. She said absolutely no, I can test it under tap water and if anything then bring it back and then it's on the repair company because they have to make sure the device remains waterproof. Came home, gave it a 20 or so second wash like the first time. Went away for few hours, came back and same problem again, power button doesn't work, screen flashes on and off and vol up brings up the power menu. Tomorrow I'm going to bring it back.

I have a Z5 (6653) that didn't start anymore and got extremely hot while charging. To be more clear: after connecting the phone to the charger the red LED turned on, then after about 10 seconds later it turned off again. From this moment on the phone's back started to get extremely hot. The source of the heat is about 1cm right and 1 cm down to the back camera (so you can say 1cm diagonal from the camera to the phone middle). Because of this I doubt it has to do with the battery as it should heat the lower two-third and not the upper third of the phone. Maybe the processor is at this place?
I tried to connect the phone in flash mode with the PC and it connected, but disconnected after a few seconds, probably because battery was empty. I repeated this procedure (connecting to charger, disconnecting, reconnecting, connecting to PC) a few days and suddenly the red LED kept on and the phone didn't get hot anymore.
So I charged the phone fully and wanted to start it, but the screen won't turn on anymore. Connecting it to the PC and the Phone drive (MTP) is displayed but empty, because you need to unlock screen. Also I hear the connecting sound of the phone and touch feedback sounds.
I tried the following things:
Xperia Companion Repair
Flashtool flashing newest ROM
Flashtool downgrading to 32.0.A.6.152_R5B (LP ROM)
Nothing helped. Well, the idea it is an hardware issue might be at hand, but maybe there is something else I can try first?
And if it is an Hardware issue, what is the cause? The Display itself? Then why was a single point at the phone back the source of heat and not a large area on the phone front?
A short summary:
Phone gets hot while connected to charger
Battery won't charge (LED indicator turns off after few seconds)
Source of heat is 1cm to the right and down to the back camera; after 2 minutes whole phone is hot and you can't recognize the source
After days of repeating the action (connect to charger, disconnect, connect to PC, connect to charger) it suddenly charged the battery and didn't get hot anymore
Display won't start anymore; still responsive
Tried Xperia Companion Software repair
flashed latest Stock ROM
flashed Lollipop Stock ROM
Phone has locked bootloader and is/was not rooted. I'm grateful for all help!
I guess its a dead screen maybe u droped it and the pins of the screens got ejected from the motherboard.. Ignoring the fact that it was empty of charge and you charged it.
From what i understand that the phone is working but there is no screen.
The best thing u can do is to check a hardware store that is capable of diagnosing the issue.
Im not helping here i know but wanted to share my thoughts..

The fact that the phone wasn't charging and got hot instead at the beginning is very irritating. Especially that it wasn't the front but a point at the back near the camera. Is there a way to check if it's a Display issue and not a Mainboard/Processor/other Chip issue?
At least in Germany are a lot of stores that aren't too competent at all. But nobody would tell you, so its very helpful to know as much as possible before going to a store.
I think it might have something to do with the gpu inside the soc? The heat might have burned something inside the mainboard (how hot was it btw, like running intensive apps or even hotter than that?) Another thing that might have happened is the display cable is loose.
I've seen some Z5's screens and they're not that easy to die.
The best thing I can suggest is that you repair it in a trusted shop that lets you observe the repair procedure directly (open the phone, take the parts out, identify the problem).

I never played any game so it is hard to compare, but I never had a phone in my hands that got this hot before. You didn't get instantly burned touching the phone but it was already inconvenient hot for your fingers/hand.
There might be some trust able stores to find, but I doubt somebody will let you observe it, not even Apple store does. If you see the trick of how to repair it easy and fast, you might do it yourself next time. And it is also a question of the price. If I can buy a used but totally unharmed Z5 for the same price, why should I let it repair?
As far as I could see in Germany repairing Display starts at 99€ for the Z5. Buying display with adhesive would start at 49€. But if they change the Display and it's still broken you have to pay for the Display and also for the mainboard i.e.
