Squaretrade - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi guys... quick question...
If you send your tablet into SquareTrade for warranty repair/replacement, do you get your tablet back? Or do they send you another they have on hand? Reason I ask, is my tablet is rooted/unlocked etc... I'm thinking about sending it in for my Squaretrade warranty because the thing simply is a POS... it does not work, takes me 45 minutes to open an app and watch a movie. It's been this way for over a year, flashing different roms and multiple factory resets just do not work. The Zombie-Pop ROM has made it tolerable but I expect more after paying $650. The I/O chip in this thing is a complete POS

If you format /data yourself it will be fast again (for a while). A factory reset just wipes it. Try formatting it in TWRP. Takes 90 mins and then convert it to F2FS.
There is nothing square trade can do to make your device better. All 700s suffer this lag. It is a combo of the slow emmc chip and screen resolution is too high for the tegra 3.

I understand... What I'm hoping is that they will just give me a refund and I can purchase a new Z4 or something...

Well I doubt warranty covers refund as the device is working as intended.

Yea... had I known it was intended to be a boat anchor I wouldn't have dropped $650 + warranty on it...
I've purchased my last Asus item...
Thanks for your input though sbdags... Love your work on here

newegg return policy

I'm hesitant to write this post for fear of sounding like I'm just whining, but due to the build issues with this particular device, I think it's appropriate that I warn people who are planning to purchase from Newegg.com. Their return policy is 30 days FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE DATE ONLY. That means, you have 30 days to RMA a defective device and any subsequent defective devices. If your 3rd device is defective, you're stuck with Asus' warranty.
To their credit, I contacted them by phone and they gave me a "one time only" exception. I wish I could just get a refund, but the item was purchased on a gift credit card that is not in my name, and that would be problematic. So, I have one shot to get an acceptable unit.
I've been doing business with Newegg for computer parts for years and they're service, selection and prices have all been excellent with this notable exception. I will probably continue to do business with them, but for an item like the tf700 that has known build issues, I recommend purchasing it from BestBuy or some place like that where you can return things a bit more easily.
i purchased mines from newegg and yesterday was feeling upset that i couldnt return it. I was at my wits end with this tablet. I was convinced to unlock and root, and since doing so, i am very impressed. This device is 10x better than when i first got it. So far, everything is running much smoother. I was hesitant to root because i didnt feel like going thru all that. but with the help of certain members, the process was very easy and i saw results right away.
Just my two cents.

I'm actually having second thoughts about RMAing this one. The screen is not flat (visibly bowed out along the top edge) and it clicks a little. I'm afraid it will get worse over time or even crack. But, I actually love the performance. I haven't pushed it that hard, but the IO issues don't seem to affect my experience much. Knowing I only have one more shot at a good unit, without resorting to returning to Asus, I might just stay with this one and hope it doesn't fall apart.
Either way, I fully intend to unlock the unit I end up with.

They have have gotten real bad with their return policies over the years. I forgot a USB cable one time and they sent the RMA item right back to me. And wasted many days off my return period and then wouldn't honor it later. I stopped buying anything from there anymore.

That is better than Tiger Direct. I bought a Prime when they were first available back last December. I had wifi and GPS issues but held on to the Prime for about 3 weeks hoping for a firmware update to address the issues. When I attempted to get a RMA from Tiger Direct I was informed that their return policy for tablets was 14 days. If I had known that I would not have purchased from TD.

im never buying an asus product again

i remember when asus used to be reputable, it lured me into enough of a false sense of security to give them a second chance and purchase one of their tablets... anyway, to reflash the bootloader and operating system, theyre claiming they have to replace the motherboard... we all know they do not, theyll reflash it and send it back charging me full price.... well, thats $161 + $65 shipping.... interesting though, cost me $12 to ship it there so theyre overcharging for that too
i also had a monitor from asus, i had rows of pixels go dead on me and it was under warranty, sent it back at $40 shipping and the problem was back in a week... so instead of sending it to them again and again, i replaced it with another brand
anyone else have these issues with asus?
I've only had good luck with Asus. I have a TF101 tablet and 2 Asus laptops. One laptop stopped charging after 5 months (bad charging port) and Asus paid to have it shipped to them and back to me. Fix was covered under warranty. My tablet is close to 2 years old and still runs great, holds a charge like it did when it was new.
Sorry you had so much trouble!

if i remember correctly, the TF101 is an older model.. before they locked the bootloader and disabled nvflash for performing your own bootloader repairs in the event of such a situation... its a more recently business practice theyve seem to have began a few months ago... is the company losing profits or something? and even if they were its not excuse to rip off customers for a little extra

Yeah, the TF101 is the original Asus tablet. I didn't know they locked down the bootloader. The would definitely keep me from buying a new one. I think the entire tablet/PC/laptop market is hurting so who knows what a company will do to save a buck.

Nexus 5 Dead

Hi this is my first post but have been avid follower of the site and had multitude of devices. Never felt a real passion as i have today to start a thread, today my nexus 5 died.
I have had my nexus 5 for just other 2 weeks now and for no apparent reason decided to die on me. Battery was fully charged had the phone in my pocket , took out to check it and nothing. My first thought was that maybe i didn't plug it properly and it hadn't charged, so stuck it on charge and nothing not led, no charge icon. left it for about an hour and completely nothing at all, tried everything power and volume buttons. Did a search on Google and couldn't find hardly any info on this sort of situation apart form one forum where a few people have had this issue and seems to be with 32gb version and they needed replacements.
Surely this sort of thing shouldn't be happening, clueless to what it could be, i did unlock, root, and install omni custom rom last night but all was working fine this morning untill it died of course.
Really i just wanted to make people aware of the problem and hear if anyone else has had this issue, or if anyone could shed some light as to what may have caused it.
Whats really ticked me off is Google customer service, i was given an rma and went through the the steps in the email to realize that they would hold the amount for this replacement on my debit card. So basically im buying a new phone and getting a refund when they receive my faulty handset. So now i have no phone and im £350 short for at least 14 days. This is ludicrous im being put out through no fault of my own, not everyone has £350 lying around spare. I understand that Google are covering there arses in-case they don't get the faulty handset back but please you send my a faulty handset and im the one who has jump through hoops and be put out.

no pocket was perfectly dry.
The phone has been on charge overnight now and still nothing, i notice that if its on charge or you push any buttons, there is clicking notice in the handset, but you have to hold the handset to your ear to hear it what is that.

Why does it tick you off? Why should Google be on the hook for $350? So many unscrupulous people out there, it's a normal business practice.
If you want to spare the $350, then send the phone into LG Warranty repair. They won't send you a loaner, but your phone will be repaired for no cost to you under their warranty.
Here is where you still complain its not fair because you won't have a phone then, and Google should still give you everything for free until you return your phone....
I think that it might be battery problem. And do use any cover on it? Because some covers can cover your power button and press it.
And also might be stuck power button.

Why does it tick me off! you my friend are either ignorant or stupid. It is my Statutory right here in the UK to be sold a product that is fit for purpose. From the sales of good act
1979F4048B
Repair or replacement of the goods

(1)If section 48A above applies, the buyer may require the seller—
(a)to repair the goods, or
(b)to replace the goods.
(2)If the buyer requires the seller to repair or replace the goods, the seller must—
(a)repair or, as the case may be, replace the goods within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience to the buyer;
(b)bear any necessary costs incurred in doing so (including in particular the cost of any labour, materials or postage).
So trying to find £350 pound is a bit of an inconvenience for me, maybe not you as clearly that's nothing to you but for the normal working class id say that was a bit of inconvenience.
Why would i not complain im not a multi billion pound company who can afford to be £700 out of pocket with nothing to show for it. i haven't asked for anything for free all im asking for is to have what a paid for, a working phone.
Yea there are unscrupulous people out there but that's not all of us, i remember the day when company's looked after there customers because they were the ones that made them there profit.

Get a part time job maybe if you can't afford them freezing the $349 on your card for two weeks.

What Google could do is send a pre-paid bag out and NOT send a replacement phone and once they receive the faulty they then send a new one. OK, you're without a phone for a day or so but it would mean no one is out of pocket and Google don't lose out as they get the original back first. We do this at my company and it works just fine
I find it hard to believe you Americans think that Google's policy is fair? I work full time but would still find it an inconvenience that a device I bought in good faith died and I have to fund a replacement first before I can get the replacement. Not everyone has £350 available as disposable cash, I certainly don't as everything I earn is budgeted for and ear marked for bills, rent, etc. A shop wouldn't ask you to do this and neither should a mail order purchase.
I'm not bashing Google as a company, just their returns policy
I get what you are saying but I don't think you are understanding what is happening. If you want an RMA they hold the money on your card because they are sending you a brand new device. You are 100% able to send the phone in to LG for free to have it replaced under warranty because it is faulty. You have an option that does not cost you any money. You are taking the option that does.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
By the way they don't actually charge you any money for the replacement they simply authorize in case you don't send them back a phone. Also you can keep your phone on until you get the replacement and then you can send them back your faulty one.

That's just a piss poor response to a valid point. I can afford the phone, and I will be buying on on Friday as it happens, I was saying I don't have an ADDITIONAL £350 lying about. If it went wrong I'd expect it to be repaired/replaced at no cost within the warranty. I can live without a phone for a day or so so Google should provide the RMA package WITHOUT sending a new phone and once they receive the faulty one they send a new one. HTC do this. Everyone would be happy. Google could easily do this but choose not to and this is why I think their RMA procedure is poor.

I Agree that it would be better process to be able to send your device back for an exchange, not only would you not be out of pocket but would be a faster process. I think you would find that is a more normal business practice, at least here in UK. You don't have to re buy a product if you want an exchange it at any other mail order company Maybe this guy works for google and has so much spare cash because he is keeping hold everyone's money for 14 days.

1. Is it not the point Google are trying to make by making available a high spec device at an affordable price.
2.Being able to spare £350 and being able to spare £700 is bit of a difference don't you think.
3,I think your missing point its not so much about being able to spare the cash as it is the fact you give a company your business and when things go wrong you expect to be treated as a valued customer. I never asked for a special treatment or the world for that matter, i just wanted an easy, inconvenient way of replacing faulty goods.
I experienced the same issue last night. Charged my phone up and it was fine. Put it in my pocket, took it out a couple hours later and it was off. Haven't been able to turn it on since. No water damage, and I've never dropped it. I'm going through the RMA process now.

That is completely bull****. I spent two hours on the phone with LG, Google, and LG+Google support managers trying to get a repair on an *in warranty* nexus 4, (they stated that this same policy applies to the Nexus 5) instead of a RMA through Google. LG will NOT do in-warranty service, if you send a Nexus that was bought through google play to LG they treat it as an out-of-warranty repair no matter what. (Yes, I am very aware that this policy is illegal, I tried explaining that to the person they transferred me to in LG legal, they said to try my luck with small-claims). To get your money back after they bill you the out of warranty price for your in warranty repair you have either have to go to small-claims court or try to get your bank to reverse the charge. Its a total bull**** policy that is, in fact, illegal, but until someone actually sues them over it, nothing is going to change. I ended up just biting the bullet on the normal RMA since I've got a Nexus 5 anyway.
LG will not accept in-warranty repairs for Google Play purchased Nexus devices, they require you to go through Google, no exceptions. I really wish it weren't true, but a conference call with LG and Google Play support managers resulted in my beating my head against a wall on exactly this issue.

Been a while since I used a debit card, but I remember my bank actually did prevent me from spending funds that were pre-authorized. Yes, the money was still mine, but it's set aside and I wasn't able to touch it until the preauth expired. Can be very inconvenient when cash is tight.

[Q] Repair Nexus 5 or get Z3 Compact

So my N5 is pretty messed up after the phone was physically bent. It is hardly noticable if you just glance at it but if you look closely it doesn't lie flat on the table when I place it on the screen and you can see glass is actually lifting off of the phone a bit. Now the real issue is the display and the touch response. As you can see in the attached pic, I can hardly see anything on it because of the black vertical lines covering 80% of the screen. For the first few days of using it after the damage, this was the only issue. The other day it started over heating pretty badly while I was using it until it completely drained its battery really fast. In the same day I noticed the glass lifting off (possibly result of the overheating?) and the touch response started getting pretty bad too. Now it randomly reboots a couple times a day.
Initially I thought it was only going to be an LCD replacement but it looks like it'll be more than that. Any phone repair experts have a clue what parts are damaged based on my description or how much I'm looking at for repairs? I'm just hoping it'll be reasonable (250 or less) or else I might as well move on and get a new phone even though I loved this phone.
I know that realistically the cost of repairing these problems are gonna be ridiculous so I've already started looking into different phones. After the announcement of the N6 with the size and price being confirmed I think I'll pass on that. It looks like it'll be the Z3 compact if I decide to get a new phone but I'm just afraid of the non stock skin and there doesn't appear to be any nice stock looking roms for it yet.
Any suggestions on what you guys would do in this situation?
Since it's bent, LG will most probably return it with a message saying it's beyond repair.
After yesterday's announcement, looks like Google has no plans on replacing the Nexus 6 with the 5 (like 7 made way for the 9). So, if I were you, I would probably get another Nexus 5 (may be with a different color). I love stock android and quick updates/tons of development and also the budget is an important factor for me. Hence, I would surely suggest you to buy a n5 again.
Ahh well, it's just me I guess. TBH, no one can tell you what to buy, it really comes down to your liking, budget and what you expect from your device!

Ahh well, it's just me I guess. TBH, no one can tell you what to buy, it really comes down to your liking, budget and what you expect from your device!

Personally, I would never buy a 1 year old phone, but thats me and I always like the latest. The Z3 compact actually looks really good, if you can go down in screen size.

I would exchange my n5 wid a z3 compact any moment. .
I find n5 a bit large ...plus 4-5hrs sot was a downgrade from i9082 which easily touched 7hrs sot...
So if my nexus was damaged ... Z3C would be my choice
I want to send it to LG to repair just to get an idea of how much it'd cost but would they charge me for the shipping and labour of taking it apart to look at it? I won't go through with repairs if it costs too much. I'm rooted and running a custom rom but none of my damages are covered under warranty anyways so I don't know if I still need to unroot before I send it in or anything.
I love the N5 but not enough to buy another one a year after its been out unless someone is willing to sell their mint 32gb for under $250. Like rootSU, I just can't buy a year old phone if I'm shelling out money for a new phone.

Wasn't Google replacing Nexus 5s for free no matter what happened to it?
If you're in the US you might wanna call GOOGLE and check.

I tried that. Unfortunately, Google doesn't like Canadians very much.
US play store purchases only.

I called today about my N5 that went for a swim with me and got the cold shoulder. I'd like to know how everyone is just getting a new device. Are you calling a certain support line I don't know about?

Has anyone repaired the phone themselves?

Yesterday my phone fell out of my pocket from low really low altitude (~20cm) but the phone broke nonetheless.
After the fall my SIM-card/memory card is no longer detected. Also there's no sound coming from the 3.5mm headphone jack.
I've only heard horror stories from sending the device to Asus. So since I got nothing to lose I was thinking about opening up the phone and try to fix is myself (hopefully a cable or something is just loose).
Would you recommend trying yourself?
Thanks!

If you can, I recommend sending it in first and setting up an RMA. If you open it up and get stuck and decide to send it in, they won't honor your warranty, since it was opened up and tampered with.

They told me on the support line that the warranty is voided anyway since it was "an external impact/force" causing the issue.
Apparently it's not supposed to be able to take any hits at all. My 6-7 HTC phones never had any issues with drops. So I'm really disappointed with ASUS.
Six months and then game over.
But I hear your point.

Wait really?! I find that to be pretty terrible. I'm sorry to hear that, but if you have nothing to lose, then go for it. Always thought they took it in with out of warranty as well, but added more charges

They told me it's €80 for just checking what's wrong (I couldn't even get an estimate if it would be another €50 or €500). And then you get a quote (usually an obscene amount due to The Sunk Cost Fallacy of the first €80) and decide if you want to pay for returning it without repair (usually additional charge for delivery)
or pay the amount quoted and get it repaired. And since they always use external contractors there's no goodwill what so ever. Asus doesn't care. Like a said, I've just heard bad things about sending it in!

Yikes, this makes me a bit hesitant to send mine in for anything. I didn't know they used external contractors, but after hearing nightmares about RMA, I guess that's what would explain it a bit.

It might differ depending on which country you live in. I live in Sweden with really great consumer protection stuff in place, and I really thought Asus would handle this differently since I both the Limited Edition and since they are trying to gain market shared for phones.
Hence my disappointment. I would never recommend Asus to anyone after this. I means, my HTC phones has been dropped onto tarmac/asphalt, floor stone bricks, you name it.
I already cracked the backside (top right corner) from a 3-5cm drop from my pants while sitting down on a solid surface, and now this from a 20cm drop. They can't handle anything it seems.
Mines had a loose camera since day one they wanted to hold me over ransom if I sent it in I have to pay if they deem it my fault on a brand new phone first Asus phone and my last
