[Q] Broken power button? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My power button seems to be either stuck or broken.. It bootloops quickly on the splash screen when plugged in but is otherwise useless atm. I'm not posting to try to fix it, but I wanna know if its even worth selling at this point because I already got another phone. Thanks for your opinions in advance.

[Q] Unrooting Before Shipping Back to VZW

Unfortunately, I've encountered a hardware defect on my phone...
...the dreaded power button is getting stuck and becoming virtually unusable. The VZW Tech Support is sending me a CLNR device which should be here on Friday. (Apparently, they got rid of free overnight shipping.)
I'm unrooting tonight so I can play around with the new OTA over the next couple of days.
Is there anything I need to do to the phone other than un-root it so that VZW doesn't know it was rooted, thereby avoiding any future headaches and $299 charges.
Thanks!
Drew
Just to remember to remove your sd card before sending it back. If left in by accident they can tell some of what you have been doing with your phone.

Oh yeah. That for me was a given. lol
I'm removing the SIM, SD card, battery and back battery cover.
If that's it then I should be set. Just trying to cover all of my bases. ya know?

Just make sure to follow the unroot process in the dev forums so you put your phone back to "stock". You want to make sure its back to "S-ON" but that's about it.

Thanks but this is not my first time un-rooting my phone. I got that part covered. Installing the official OTA now.
Good Lord it takes forever over 3G. lol

Hope your new phone is better in regards to the power button issue. Mine seems to be OK... Except I keep finding its randomly shut itself off. If its not one thing its something else I guess lol

When your next phone arrives, consider using quickboot to restart/turn off the phone. Might help prevent you from going thru the same ordeal again.

Actually just got the new phone today and rooted it this evening. Everything works perfectly fine and the power button actually presses down now. lol
The only annoyance is that the speaker seems to crackle if above more than 1/2 volume. Thankfully, I can hear just fine if below that. But if it becomes too bad, I'll have to do another swap.

Curious as to why you would bother unrooting software when hardware is the issue? Here's why I ask.
I buy all of my companies pcs and cell phones. If I wipe MSCRAP7 off the machine and it has a MB failure and I call the mfg and they send a new one i don't restore back to 7 why would you on the phone?

Because rooting voids your warranty...

Because if I don't, theres a strong risk I'll have to pay full retail for this replacement even though rooting didn't cause the hardware failure.
I'm guessing you're not rooted...

Phone screen won't come on.

Only the "buttons" light up. I can hear notifications and such I just can't see anything. Can something tell me if I can fix it or how I can?

Pull the battery then reboot the phone. Do you see any of the splash screen? If not I'd bet your looking at a hardware issue.

Samsung just replaced one on my Skyrocket for 158 bucks. Plus they paid shipping both ways. Mine was cracked so not under warranty. Call them. If the phone is under a year it should still be covered so it might be FREE????

Google android screencast see if you can view your screen like that. If so try wiping and reflashing a rom. Might just be a simple fix.
IF you turn it off, then turn it on with the power and volume button, it should start download mode. do you see anything on the screen if you do that?

How would i go about doing the google screen cast thing?
Anyone?
If you don't see any boot up screens at all and everything else is working, it could be the LCD or the LCD controller. Hard to say. Did it get dropped, knocked or something? The fact that is boots up and you can unlock without seeing and hear the sounds means its fully working otherwise, just no display so it's not bricked or anything. New screens are $100 on ebay but if it's not the screen or you're not comfortable doing it, might be better to send it to Sammy and get it fixed as they will at least fix whats wrong and not guess ordering a $100 screen.
Do your carrier offer any trade in's or deals or anything? Since the other guy said it was a $160 to fix it, you can buy a used SGS4G on ebay starting at that price, or just upgrade and get a new phone.
Far chance, but can you shine a flashlight on the screen when you know it should be "on" like after swipping to unlock and see if you can see any image at all?

Return to stock??

I need to return my phone to stock so that I can exchange it. I flashed a custom splash screen so I really just need to get my stock splash screen back and I can hide the rest. Anyone? Thanks

Good to hear man.
Oddly enough, I was having a power button issue as well. Acted like it was being pressed down at random times. But I fixed it myself.
Wonder if the power button thing is widespread, or just an isolated flaw.

[Q] Help! Dead (Bricked?) Nexus S

Hi All
First of all, I would like to thank you for your time of reading my post. I know the Nexus S is a pretty old phone, but I have a lot in the phone and hence I would like to repair it, or at least wake it up and copy all my photos and others.
My phone could not be turned on yesterday, this is what I have done:
I switched off the Nexus S, took the battery out, change the SIM, inserted the battery, turn on the phone, and while the phone was turning on, I picked it up and was going to put the back cover on, and the battery dropped out at the time it was showing the Nexus Logo, and I couldn't never turn on my phone again.......
I have tried to use a phone charger to charge it, failed, external usb battery, failed, computer USB port, failed..... I have also tried to press not only the power button, but power + vol up, power + vol down, power + vol up and down, remove and reinsert the battery quickly while it is charging, all fail..... NOTHING shows up at all, no charging logo, no start up animation, no vibration..... but I can assure that for whatever method I charge the phone, the phone is heating up, so i guess it is really charging.
I had rooted my phone before, and running the latest official OTA jelly bean. I once had a problem with my power button, but magically it 'healed' itself a week after....
Hopefully I have provided enough to troubleshoot my problem, I am hoping it is just a software crash but not motherboard burnt something like this. Of course I am happy to provide more to help on this issue.
So can anyone please help me?
Many many thanks
Hi victor I am more than willing for you to meet up and try my jig if you wish? I only ever bought it as a backup device, it did help me revive my gs2 back in the day though.

Thank you so much of your reply!
I wonder that based on the information that I gave above, do u think it is possible to wake it up with JIG please?
(I am in Stafford and may need to arrange a time that is good for us both)
I couldn't say for sure but it can't hurt to try a jig. I am free all day on Thursday this week though if that is any help to you? I no longer have a pc. if you send me a stamped adressed envelope I am more than happy to post the jig to you and I'll include an envelope to return back to me

Many thanks for your offer, I just checked on ebay and buying one may cost only £1.50, so I may just save the hassle of posting yours around.
I just hope that this JIG will work and bring my phone into download mode.
is there any other who can comment and give me advise for my case please??
Is this your case?

Yes, I think so, very similar, my battery dropped out while it was in the boot animation.
Hi All
I have ordered a JIG already, hoping that it will bring my phone into download mode, so if it does work, what is my next step please??? Just wanna prepare well.
I have done a search in the forum, do I run the nexus root toolkit? or the unbrickable resurrector? or download odin? where to get the odin by the way please?

RMA Nexus 5

Hey guys, I'm thinking about RMA my nexus 5 because my power button is loose (we all know this problem) it doesn't bother me that much, but if I can have a new one that works fine why not, right?
So my question is, how do theses things usually go? Do I get to keep my current nexus until the new one arrives? Have you guys RMA about this problem and was it worth it?
Anyway, thanks for your attention.
If you bought it through Google you will have to pace a charge for the price of the phone on your credit card then they will send you a phone. You will send yours back in the same box. Shopping is included for free and once they get the phone the hold on your funds is removed
So I have to "temporary" pay for another phone?

It's just a hold. They usually release the funds within a day or two of receiving your old phone. Just went through two RMA's with them, it was pretty painless.
I don't think they accept a loose power button as a valid reason for an RMA, so if you try you might just find yourself out the expense for the new phone.

They do. I RMA'd my first one solely because of an annoyingly loose volume rocker. They had no issue with it.
