[Q] Voip calls from Hangouts with idol 3? - Onetouch Idol 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed hangouts dialer (not something I've previously used) and a message popped up telling me it couldn't work with the version of hangouts installed...as far as I know I have the latest version.....does anyone have voip calls working with hangouts and google voice? I'd like to setup calls but have not previously used this feature.

Did you actually check if you have the latest version of Hangouts? Pre-installed apps are rarely the current version. Open the Play store, go to Hangouts and check. If Update is an option. If so then hit the update button. Problem solved.

I have been using Hangouts - for all my calls actually - domestic and international ( still haven't popped a SIM card yet in the phone ) - and it has been working flawlessly. I am a long time Google Voice user , and hangouts hasn't worked very well in my previous phone, so I am very happy in this department with the new phone.

Yeah I set the phone to auto update in google play settings and watched Hangouts and 7 other apps update so I know it's at latest version....now that I know it's working for others I'll recheck everything since it's not an app I've used till now.
I had the phone in airplane mode with wifi enabled. It should still work with that yes?

^^^Technically you don't need to turn off Mobile Data as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi, but yes, it should work as well.
I have been using Google Hangouts since it launched (and VoIP through GrooveIP/Talktaone/Vonage for ~2 years prior). My Hangouts w/ Nexus 4 experience was good overall, but Hangouts on the Idol 3 is amazing. I think most of it has to do with the bump up to LTE coverage leading to crisper calls and less potential for interference/lag.
As for your issue, I received the same prompt until I downloaded an update. You said that you already downloaded the update, so what I would suggest is to try opening the Hangouts Dialer instead of Hangouts to launch the app initially. The two apps are downloaded separately and need to both be launched before they sync capabilities IIRC.
One bone-head move I forgot was that I downloaded Google Voice but didn't launch it to adjust settings for International calls. For my Nexus 4, I had it set to prompt whether to route an international call through Google Voice. That way, even if I made an international call using Carrier Cell towers, it would deduct minutes but I would be charged using the Google Voice's low international rates. I forgot to set it up, and the call cost like $1.20 a minute. Dropped like $80 in an hour when my overall monthly plan costs $30/mo smh.

My experience with Hangouts with the Idol3 has been so much better than the Samsung Exhibit II that I am coming from . I am finally able to get away from GrooveIP ( which was working great though ) . I suspect it has something to do with the processing power that the Idol3 offers - compared to where I am coming from. I am using it on WiFi only.

Has anyones phone started getting very hot when using Hangouts DIaler?
Also, does the reversible feature work when on the phone, Can you flip it and talk into the other side?

Well after multiple attempts I finally got the hangouts dialer to work although the person on the other end complained everything they said "echo'd" and I tried it with both speakerphone and without. To answer your question I just tried dialing a call with the phone upside down and it did fine.

I have tried making domestic as well as international calls using Hangouts - and so far no one has complained about call quality, and I have not noticed any issues from my side either. I am assuming that you were making calls to a phone number, and not a hangouts-to-hangouts call ( because that is what you need the dialer for) . I have used both the supplied ear-buds, as well as without any headset of any kind. I know that without any headsets, there are chances of an echo problem. But I have not heard any complaints in either case.
BTW - No overheating for me.
And I have not tried the speakerphone - to see if there is an echo. Once I get a chance to try that, I will update if I hear any complaints.

Haven't had any heating issues personally. I did have someone mention echoes when on speakermode though. Only tried talking through Speakermode once though

No heat issues here. I, also, had someone mention a slight echo when I used the phone by itself, but that was just once.
However, is there any way to get the 6045I to acknowledge the Hangouts Dialer as the default dialer for phone calls. I thought it would ask me (once I installed it) if I wanted to use it as the default. I even tried setting it with Default App by AndUtil and it doesn't recognize the Hangouts Dialer.

Hangouts Google Voice Integration! Nexus 5 WiFi calls [INFO]]

Hello Everyone,
Since everyone is so hyped about the new Voice integration with hangouts and more specifically, we finally have the ability to make outgoing call without using 3rd party programs, still no MMS with the google voice number but the outgoing calling alone is awesome.
Anyway, since this is XDA and the new functionality gives XDA's plenty of money saving ideas I'm certain of that, here goes.
HANGOUTS & GOOGLE VOICE = 1.6 MB PER HOUR OF CALLING
DISCLAIMER
That is an amazingly low amount of data! I ran this test making a 3 minutes phone using my nexus 5 on LTE. It's by far not a scientific test but a very good estimate of how much data you can save making calls with GOOGLE VOICE THRU HANGOUTS. I'm sure you 30$ a month 5GB t-mobile people can put this to good use, I know I will! (Goodbye stupid deadzones in Brooklyn College ) Finally us Nexus 5 owners have a more legitimate way of making WiFi calls since T-mobile ditched us on that one. I'm plenty excited about all of this! What do you guys think? How will you be using the new outgoing calls feature?
LASTLY
The updated hangouts apk is below in case you didn't get the update yet like me. enjoy!
I am so anxious for this integration. I've already got the new apk and dialer installed, now I keep checking Hangouts for the popup to integrate SMS and voicemail from GV into hangouts. Wish there was a way to force it like the search for OK Google Everywhere.

Same, although my rom still has CM Voice+ and it's still handling the integration quite well. I currently use Groove Forwarder from the play store to switch my GV forwarding based on location. I'm very curious if it will still be functional once I'm integrated, as currently, I don't see any options in the new Hangouts app to determine what number rings. If it stays this way, I'll end up getting double rings (dialer & Hangouts) when someone calls my GV number.

I have the same double ring problem. I'd like to see an option to only accept/make Hangouts calls over wifi because I use Llama to disable the cell radio when on wifi at home (because the cell signal is very poor and it drains my battery very fast and also because I have a Ting "metered" plan and trying to keep usage as low as possible -- basically on cell only when away from home, wifi otherwise). I currently use the older version of GrooveIP, but was hoping to be able to move to Hangouts.

Me too, I keep thinking that maybe I did something wrong and I'm being left out, but Google's just rolling the server-side changes out slowly, I've read. Such anxiety
This actually works for every Android device that can use hangouts/google voice too. Right now I have it on my Galaxy Player, and it works great. I'm glad that Google finally integrated google voice, because it makes things a lot easier lol. I'm surprised that this isn't getting a lot of news.
We still need the GV app to send texts, right? Or am I missing something and it's possible to text using your GV number from the Hangouts app?

I'm checking on it right now, but it seems that you don't need the GV app anymore. You should be able to text using your GV number in hangouts. I'm setting mine up right now.
Here's the topic that google created to set up GV with Hangouts. I ran into a problem where I had to disconnect hangouts in gmail, and then reconnect it to see the Google Voice option in the settings.

OK, more help needed: how do I switch the number and SMS is sent from when starting a new conversation? I like the "smart reply" option, but sometimes I want to send from the GV number, other times from my cell number (in particular for MMS).

Hey has anyone had the issue where hangout calls connects, but you get can't hear anything. Basically only one end of the line gets sound for some reason. each time i had to hang up and try again.
I haven't on the 2 test calls I made. Any suspicions as to why its happening?
Whats your OS or ROM, Phone, Network, what was your coverage like. Wifi or mobile network.

Not working for me, still using cell minutes when making calls
?
Edit: I think I figured it out, if I use the phone dialer it asks if I want to use Google voice, it uses minutes, if I skip it and use the hangouts dialer no minutes. So do I need GV installed at all?
Don't need Voicemail on GV, I can use T-Mobile Visual Voicemail.
in order to receive wifi calls there is box to check in settings plus
in google voice settings [web page] I had to stop google from forwarding my google # to my phone [uncheck nexus 5]
this keeps google from forwarding the call twice and keeps the native dialer blocking the hangouts dialer
I'm on wifi 95% of the time so this should lower my $12 Ting bill to $9 on a normal month.

Solution for S5 simultaneous talk and surf issue

This is for the S5, but I assume it would work on the galaxy note 4 and all other devices with this issue.
Hi all, I wanted to let you know that there is a very easy work around for this limitation. It is supplied by Google Inc through the Hangouts Dialer app. I'm not sure whether or not you need Hangouts installed to use it, but it allows you to make calls via the data network and still use the network to browse the web, etc. I have tried it several times at home with WiFi off and it works flawlessly so far.
It's sad that Sprint didn't find a way to bypass this limitation on their own, or at least inform customers, but this is an easy and seamless solution by Google.
I put the icon right next to my default phone icon for future use.
Additionally, I can not believe that Sprint is not aware of this work around. I spoke to a few different representatives today, and none were able to offer a solution.
I found this on my own searching the play store. Hope this helps!!
I posted this in the community forum on sprint.com. Hopefully they will figure out a way to make it work......
Sprint:
As I have stated in other posts, the "Hangouts Dialer" app allows you to make calls over the data connection without WiFi and still be able to surf the web. (Please note, this app is different from "Hangouts", it is "Hangouts Dialer" by Google Inc.)
This works on my S5, and it should work on any device that can install the app.
This has not been suggested by any of the Sprint Agents in any of the posts I have seen. I have seen suggestions to use Skype and other VOIPs, but there are some charges and they require a WiFi signal.
This is very confusing because if the app is able to make calls using the data network, then why doesn't Sprint set up the default dialer to do the same thing if there is no WiFi connection? I do understand that this would increase the load on the data network, but you are losing customers at a significant rate due to this issue. Anybody who needs to be on the phone and confirm appts, emails, etc with the person/client/coworker they are on the phone with is not able to do so. This is a monumental step backwards that is inexcusable with todays technology. Waiting for VOLTE is not a solution, as the time frame on this is not guaranteed.
Please consider my suggestion for the default dialer app. Google already has it functional in the Hangouts Dialer app, so there is no reason it can't be done.
Thanks!

I decided to try this out, since you've been posting the same info in multiple threads. It works, but it's flawed. This ONLY works if you're calling someone who is also using Google Hangouts. (If they aren't, you're prompted to send them an SMS. The reason that we can't make simultaneous voice and data is a limitation of CDMA. Until Sprint updates to VoLTE, it's something Sprint users have dealt with since the first smart phone.

Ramer,
Thank you for responding to my post. I need to point out that you have two apps confused. As above, the app is not "Hangouts". It is "Hangouts Dialer". This is a dialer app. It can call landlines, cell phones, etc. No need for call to go to somebody who is also using Hangouts.
Please install the "Hangouts Dialer" app, turn off your WiFi, call a landline with the app, and then see if you can surf. I have had no issues with it so far.
Please let me know!

Go and type google voice on google and log on to the website with your Google account. There should be an option to add a Google voice number. Click on the one that says use your existing number and type in your number. It should detect that it's a sprint number and continue to the next step to enable google voice on your phone. If you don't want google voice on your phone anymore just go back to he website and disable your number from Google voice. You can always reactivate it at any time you want

Thx for the info this seems to work if your placing the call, question, is there away to talk and surf if your not the one placing the call?
I didn't read the entire thread.. My vzw S3 could have LTE and voice simultaneously. The S5 has a modified modem to disconnect 3G/LTE when sms/voice radio activates for battery saving. Annoying when downloading GB files!

[Q] Google Voice not working on your S6?

I noticed I hadn't gotten any Google Voice/Hangout notifications of voice mails. I reset my Google Voice (deactivated/reactivated) to no avail. However, once I deactivated Advanced Calling (Settings...Wireless and Networks), and reset Google Voice, it's working again. Anyone else experience similar/same?
Yeah, I did a search and saw others with Verizon phones and advanced calling that were having this issue. It looks like if you have advanced calling, you can't use google voice.
Don't know if there is any solution yet.
On edit, this link provides a possible fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/fix-google-voice-forwarding-advanced-t2980980
I've had no problems with Google Voice and Hangouts, both with VoLTE enabled and disabled, and on my S6 and G3. I don't use VoIP for calls via Hangouts though, it rings my actual cell number that I have set to forward to with Google Voice.
Working extremely perfect. No issues.

Yeah, I'm using Hangouts now without issue. I did install Google Voice, because I think that's still required for everything to wire up right. I just turned off the HD calling all together. Not worth my while, at least for now.
So, I tried some of the fixes suggested on this forum and they haven't taken yet. Disabling HD Voice works but causes other problems I'll describe below. With HD Voice active, I tried uninstalling GVoice app and removing my number altogether, then adding it all back again as if for the first time. That did not work. I tried twice. All voicemail still gets routed into my Verizon voicemail.
Spent a good hour on the phone with Verizon customer support and elevated to L2 technician. TLDR: There appears to be a conflict based on how Verizon has chosen to employ the HD Voice function. Right now, I'm forced to either have Google Voice active on my mobile phone OR retain the ability to use data and voice at the same time, but I can't have both.
I just activated my Verizon 64GB Samsung Galaxy S6 two days ago. Today, I noticed I had a Verizon voicemail message for the first time in years. I have been using Google Voice(mail) for as long as I can remember. Concerned why voicemail was skipping my GVoice, I soon discovered that others had noted that turning off the HD Voice option fixed the problem. Sure enough, it did. I thought I was good to go.
Until, the next time I made a call, I noted that my 4G immediately turned into a greyed out 1x and any attempt to use other functions of my phone while on the call were met with a warning that said I can't make calls and use data services at the same time. That was news to me, since that has never been an issue before. Surely my GS6 is not less capable than the GS3 it just replaced in this area.
This took me to Verizon customer support, which to its credit, hung in with me the entire way in troubleshooting this. We confirmed the relationship between GVoice and their Advanced Calling service (HD Voice). And we confirmed that by turning the service back on, my ability to use data while on a call would be restored. We could not determine anything in Verizon's playbook that would allow the two to co-exist. The L2 engineer confirmed that Verizon designed its build so that the only way Data and Voice could flow simultaneously is with HD Voice activated and selected. Verizon customer service was left to advise me to choose between GVoice or dual Voice/Data based on which was more important, and maybe Google will update Google Voice in the future to fix the problem. I found that last part somewhat funny, since I don't think this is Google's problem to fix since this appears to be a Verizon specific problem and I have never had a phone that hasn't worked perfectly with GVoice. Oh, and it's not like Google is pushing out patches to Voice with any intentionality either.
I joined the forums specifically to post this in the hope it helps someone else and sparks other ideas how to beat this. This appears to be a recently discovered phenomenon. Also, since the GS6 is still relatively new, maybe this will help to raise awareness and provoke a patch. Who knows.
Anyone encounter other ideas for getting Voice to regain prime position again?

Finally got this to work by ensuring to clear app data before uninstalling an making sure not to prematurely hang up on Google voice as it reinstated the call forwarding on my new mobile phone. With this fixed e now have a work-around for using Google voice while still maintaining advanced calling features.

I can confirm this process works. I turned on HD calling. In Application Management, I cleared cache and data on the Google Voice app, then uninstalled it. I then went to my computer and deactivated Google Voice mail. I then reinstalled Google Voice on my phone, and stepped through the configuration (Verizon doesn't support it directly, so you'll see that boogie-woogie - just take the defaults and move through it). I then went back to the PC and enabled Google Voice, and let the lady finish and hang up on me. Subsequent tests confirmed that I have Google Voice mail now, while HD calling is active.

I then went back to the PC and enabled Google Voice, and let the lady finish and hang up on me. Subsequent tests confirmed that I have Google Voice mail now, while HD calling is active.

I followed your steps exactly and from what I can tell everything is working properly on mine as well. THANK YOU!!
Fixed
I only have hangouts installed, I don't use the Google Voice app anymore. After I enabled advanced calling, apparently my VM forwarding also stopped.
All I had to do to fix it was re-enable the call fowarding options, and I'm back in business.
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]
The key to the whole thing is to let the call forwarding calls fully finish and hang up on you. If you hang up, they won't complete.
Didn't have to do anything on my S6 besides going through the prompts again and letting them finish. The whole uninstall/reinstall thing may be overkill.

Still not working....
Unfortunately I still can't get it working on my s6. It works if a person calls my "google voice" number. However, if they call my "verizon" phone number it just will not go to voicemail...it rings and rings. Call forwarding is on, i've done all the steps. Any one else having this problem?
Yeah same here at least visual voice mail is free now

I wonder why it worked so easily for you.
I've tried letting it hang up on me for all 3 numbers (*71, *90, *92), but it seems to refuse to work. I'll have to try the uninstall/reinstall stuff later and see if that triggers it for me.
Not working....
For those of us still having problems....I created a post on verizon's S6 community support site as well....

Hopefully Verizon will figure this out quickly.
Now I can't get google voice to work even with advanced calling disabled. I have it entirely set to off in settings, called all 3 numbers to setup the forward (and let them hangup on me), yet when I call my number, I get a Verizon message about needing to enter the phone number of the mailbox you're trying to leave a voicemail for...

T-Mobile 5.1.1 and broken Google Voice

How many of you experiencing this too? I literally just switched back to Android specifically to use Google Voice, ported my number back over to Google, bought a Note Edge and upgraded it to 5.1.1 immediately (stupid). Found out GV outgoing calls are broken.
This is a known issue and google says they're working on it (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/voice/urpXxSfS-kE) but it's definitely irritating.
Yep..same thing here!

I am using GV to make weekly International calls, better to pay $0.07/minute than T-Mobile's $1.25/minute!!!
But since 5.1.1 it's broken....Here is the solution (in the mean while), that I have been using - and it's working again.
Say you want to call the number: 000-123-4567
Say your own GV-number is 111-222-3333
Reprogram the contacts you need to call from GV, with the number in this format:
111-222-3333 , , your-passcode# , 2 , 000-123-4567#
This will dial your own GV number, will prompt you for your passcode followed by #-sign, Option 2 will allow you to make calls, followed by #.
Each ',' is a few seconds delay - I have not tried it without the delays, but it also makes it easier to understand (for us humans).
Ya, no thanks. That's just a huge hassle.
Same problem here Google Voice does not work on the Note 4
I've got the same problem with the Note 4 (not the Edge version). I'm thinking this is an Android 5.1.1. problem. I never had this before I did the upgrade to 5.1.1.
What I see happening is this:
- You dial to make the call.
- I have Google Voice set up to ask me each time
- While the prompt for Google Voice is on top of the dialer, I see the dialer is already making the call.
So the dialer is not waiting for GV before making the call.
I'm trying to find out how I can go back to the previous version of Android, but so far it looks like I'm not able to do this.
I have a t-mobile Note 4. Hopefully t-mobile will release their 6.x version and that will fix this issue.

No Incoming SMS or MMS on Verizon

Hey OnePlus fam,
I just thought I would put this out as PSA for anyone on Verizon and having issues with SMS or MMS, as there is little information out there on this for our specific phones.
If you are unable to send or receive any text messages it is most like that the "CDMA-Less" feature needs to be activated.
You can call Verizon and ask them to enable "CDMA-Less" to your account.
Hope this helps
I had to get a new sim card that fixed my problem
Here are also a few links too; the first two are for a 6T but to concept still applies.

Had the same issue.
Called Verizon and asked them to enable this device as CDMA-less.
Been working perfect since.
Same here. I inserted my Verizon sim in the international version. Data at 50Mbps, Voice, Visual Voicemail and outgoing text messages worked. If it doesn't work for you, make sure you are using slot 1. It may matter. If you have a very old sim, you might need a new one.
I called Verizon and carefully explained that incoming sms was not functional as this was a next generation phone for a world where Verizon turns off their CDMA at the end of 2019 and SMS is routed over LTE. I instructed him to make sure "CDMA-less" was available both in the billing account and the network account. After a bit of digging he found the provisioning settings. Seconds after the phone was provisioned, sms started flooding in the stock message app. Also make sure IMS Basic Visual Voicemail is on your account if VM is giving you trouble. I use VZW Message+ (Verizon Messages) for sms as I can text from a PC also and it will restore previous sms.
By definition the phone uses VOLTE so there is no setting for HD Voice in the phone. That feature is required on your Verizon account but you would have to be switching from an ancient phone not to already have that. I cannot locate any option for Wifi calling and it does not work in airplane mode. I have a google voice number which allows Wifi calling. Interestingly it errors when the phone is in airplane mode but works when cell service is on. It reports "Wifi Call" and appears to use the stock dialer when initiated from the Voice app. Somehow Voice is even more tightly integrated with the stock dialer now than just trapping and routing international calls. This is a bug of sorts as my Moto phone on 8.0 could call in airplane mode with wifi on.
Google Duo appears to be integrated in the dialer but I haven't tried with my wife's Pixel to see if I can switch to Duo while on a regular voice call.
Bootloader unlock was simple: Tap Build # 6x, Developer Options - OEM unlocking, adb reboot recovery, fastboot oem unlock [This erases the phone]
The 7 Pro is an amazing device! Truly the most amazing. I'm really excited. The phone is super super slippery and a drop magnet. It does come with a TPU case.
I'm going to sell my kid's mint 5T and upgrade him too!
BT sucks worse than the Moto phone but I think that is an Android thing as my wife's pixel as issues to with her car. Contacts not syncing and calls not going through while connected to BT. Just have to do work arounds when I have some time.
Hoping video is fixed for the wide camera. They are amazing; but then, I'm coming from a Moto phone which has the worst cameras. Sony knows what they are doing.
Sorry to wake an old thread but did not want to start a new one.
I have verizon and have cdma-less provisioning done already. Have HD voice on the account as well. SMS works fine but I can only send MMS not receive them.
Ive tried moving sim card to other slot, tried reboot, tried factory reset, tried different apps...nothing.
The only time MMS fully works is when I am in safe mode. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?
Thank you
Try looking in permissions at what app has permissions.
Try the Verizon message plus app

Permissions were all good, sms/mms permission is in one.
I tried verizon app, MMS works, dont really like the app though, and the customization didnt help me like it enough to keep it.
Super weird that verizon messages work but not the stock app or the Mood SMS app.

I had to call Verizon 2 or 3 times for them to get it right
I downloaded a couple other SMS apps and they all work fine. So leads me to believe its just something weird with the stock app and with Mood SMS. I will switch to QKSMS for now and requested assistance from Mood SMS so they could take a look. Thanks all.
I'm going to guess MMS didn't work with that app while you were on wifi? Some apps don't know how to route MMS data properly when there both data and wifi available.
It's an option that has to be enabled on the account for Verizon customers, it's the cdma-less option. It took me a couple representatives til one of knew what I was talking about lol
I think his issue is slightly different as he can recieve sms but not mms and it varies on the app he's using.

No that I already checked. I still have not figured out why I cannot receive MMS on the stock app or on mood SMS. Mood had not replied to my email. I switched to qksms and have no issues anymore.
So ya if anyone else runs into something like I did, try different SMS apps
Yup, I learned this very quickly when I got the OnePlus 6t. Just getting them to understand that the phone was certified on VZW. Then 4 techs before one knew what to do. I think they now can address quickly even over chat.

If I get Verizon prepaid will they be able to do this? I had Verizon prepaid once in the past and customer service was much worse than regular Verizon wireless. I am pretty sure that mvnos can't do it but I'm hoping Verizon prepaid can.

I'm not sure
Yeah, there's a lot more to this than enabling CDMA-less. Before about a month ago data/sms/MMS wasn't working on Android 10 based custom roms and MMS still doesn't work unless you use Messages+.
I get both fine I just have issues with them being received after the phone goes idle for a while. My issues are small stupid crap mile messenger not closing with home button all the time and and Gboard sometimes won't type into the field I'm in
