Is there an app to track down an errant credential in credential storage?
I used to be able to use Secure Setting and Tasker to turn the pin lock on and off until this week.
The task is running right, but its not removing the pin at home.
After tracking it down I have found that something is adding itself to Credentials and it turning swipe and none screen lock options off.
Clearing the credentials fixes it till the next tasker task to turn the pin back on runs, than i have to remove credentials again.

I think I've got it sorted out now. I recently purchased the pro version of Secure Settings and I decided to disable then re-enable the System+ Module. Not sure what happened, but that seems to have cleared it.
Edit: still acting up.
So much for that being the fix.
Just had my phone decide to add that errant credential back in again several times since (this is the earliest I could get back on to update).

Something strange and unexpected has happened with my Nexus 5... Upon first setting up my device after unlocking it and rooting it, I encrypted the phone before ever adding any of my info or apps to it, full knowing that I would forever have to use a locked screen etc. To side step the annoyance and lack of security that Android has with having the Encrypted boot time password being the exact same as the lockscreen's password I used this app 'Cryptfs Password' to change the boot time password to something much more lengthy and secure, while allowing me to have a standard simplified passcode for simple screen unlocks.
As time went on I found myself in need to wipe the device to troubleshoot an issue I was having with my wifi and wireless tethering no longer functioning properly, I wished to go back to an initial factory state to begin doing restores from Titanium to find the culprit per say and figur eout where I went wrong and borked my ability to toggle wifi.
Upon wiping the phone in TWRP (standard dalvik, cache, and ROM - not system or data) I rebooted and flashed my Titanium Backup.zip and Super USer.zip and then proceeded to set up the device again when I noticed something very odd...
I still needed to enter my previously exact password upon booting the device, however the lock screen no longer any security of any kind!
When I checked in settings this is what I found:

Clearly you can see the device is still encrypted however the default "slide" screen lock is now able to be used? Whaaaaat?!?!
Opening the Screen Lock settings menu reveals:

I have not yet sleected to change it to a PIN or PASSWORD as I am home and wanted to see if I could gather any other information about this first. I have a feeling that upon changing to a PIN or PASSWORD that I would not be able to change it back again.
Is this a flaw or error of some kind? I do not see any huge security vulnerability, I mean even though this does allow you to bypass the lockscreen, you still need the password at boot to even get into the phone or any Recovery - but this is interesting nonetheless. I was under the impression that it was IMPOSSIBLE to have both device encryption and essential NO LOCK SCREEN?!?!
I have seen threads such as this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873700 where it is shown and discussed how to use the pattern lock for example, but this is obviously much different.
Can anyone else replicate this with their own android device?

where someone was able to essentially achieve a similar situation by using a 3rd party lock screen....
For some reason, the talkback service has decided to tell me it is activated even though it is not. I have a persistent notification that won't go away. Since it's a system service, there is no way to just hide the notification. Any ideas?
Clearing the cache and rebooting didn't help either.
Did you ever figure this out I have the same problem on sprint. You can't even disable the Talkback app.
Nope. I did a factory/hard reset last night. Still the same issue.
I haven't installed any apps I didn't have on my GS5, so it can't be an app's fault. Going to do an exchange at the AT&T store in the next day or two. I'm not getting stuck with something like this.

This would be a workaround (if it does work), but try tapping and holding on the notification, and then click on the "i" icon to see which app is displaying the notification. If it's a stand-alone app (i.e. not the Android system), then you should be able to block notifications for that app.

Thank you, but it is the system app doing it. I'm just going to swap for a different S6 at the store tomorrow. Got my app data backed up to the cloud thanks to Helium.
The messed up part is it literally happened right when I got my phone. I'm gonna try a factory reset then if not try to get it swapped out
@dizzymatt Still have it? It mysteriously disappeared for me today. I was literally going to go to the store this afternoon to exchange this thing. Maybe I got lucky or sensed I was coming!
Afterward, though, the oddest thing happened. I was looking through the store for a different Google product and came across this one called Google talkback. I thought that was very weird to find right after I had had this issue. When I clicked on it, it allowed me to uninstall it. Never saw it in my apps list or the application manager, but there it was. Again, this is after the notification went away from me so I have no idea if this is related.

Seen what you said and I didn't have the app installed but it just disappeared for me too after I rebooted my phone I wonder what it was.

Now I'm wondering if it was related to Google Now since the notification and the ability to say "Ok, Google from any screen went away about the same time.
Disabling Talk back
I got stuck on a 15 minute hell ride when I accidentally turned on my Talkback feature on my new S6. I couldn't turn it off even after toggling the stupid settings. I finally was able to turn it off by tapping the home screen button three times.. apparently that is the On/Off switch for the accessibility features. After it finally stopped talking back to me I went in to manually toggle the off button on that ridiculous feature.
Same problem / solved ?

Been forever since I've made a post to XDA, but I have a problem I'm not able to solve without taking an inconvenient plunge. I should mention that my phone was 100% fine yesterday evening, but since I was asleep last night it seems to have run out of battery, so this morning I charged it a bit, then I turned it on to a world of problems.
Ok, so let me run through a list of just a handful of the problems I'm having right now...
Totally stock (not rooted) Nexus 5 running Android 6.0.1 (Security: 1 March 2016)
1. Home and App switch soft keys don't work
2. Notifcations are not working at all
3. Notification shade wont pull down
4. Widgets cannot, and will not load
5. Cannot get into Developer options "Developer options are not available for this user"
Seems I'm not the only one to experience the strange bug, some folks over at Android Central were experiencing the exact same thing toward the end of last year.

Some people to have resolved this issue using "adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity" but I cannot get into Developer options to turn on USB Debugging (unless I don't need to?)
What I've tried already...
1. Cleared all Google App data "CLEAR ALL DATA"
2. Tried to make another user, just flashes and goes back to "Opula" my main and broken user profile, never creates the other profile, same thing happens when I press on Guest too
3. Safe mode, but the problem persists there too
4. Virus scan, turned up a whole lot of nothing
I'm now at the point where I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a Factory data reset (the "inconvenient plunge"), even though I think I've backed everything up the "Touch to sync" option on my Account > Google doesn't do anything, neither does the "Sync now" from the drop down menu. So despite having explored my Google account on my desktop I cannot see if it has backed up my Apps and App data, but it seems to have backed up my contacts and such.
I'm going to get a third party app to back up as stuff as I possibly can as well, but even Helium is useless now since I cannot get into the Developer options so enable USB debugging.
Anyone got any experience with this issue or how to resolve it?

Hi all,
Just wanted to update this thread to say that I did a factory reset and the phone is now fixed, but I wouldn't to give a more comprehensive account of the problems I was experiencing with the phone until I did the factory reset.
List of problems
Home and app-switch soft keys not working (back key is working)
Google Now 'on tap' not appearing (cause of home key)
Cannot see notifications just says "No notifications" (but the light and sound work fine when a notification is received)
Cannot pull down notification shade to toggle controls
Widgets cannot be added and will not load
Cannot pull down the immersive mode overlay
Google Backup not working (after 8+ days)
All types of syncing not working
Phone's storage doesn't appear on PC when plugged in via USB
Cannot access developer options (due to active profile level)
Cannot create or switch users
The best advice I can give to mitigate such an unusual problem (that appeared totally out of the blue on a cold boot) is use Google Backup services, keep on top of syncing, and manage your data via your Google account! Or as an alternative, manage and maintain manual backups.
This happened to me before and I spent quite a while googling different ways to fix it with no luck...I had to just wipe and start again. I changed to a pattern lock today whereas normally I go without, however for various reasons I wanted it on. When I have went to change it back to just swipe, its greyed out and says 'disabled by administrator, encryption policy or credential storage'.
I know its not the end of the world but I'm so used to just swiping, so its a bit of a pain. Anyone know how to fix it or will I have to factory reset and start again?
Did you ever figure this out? I just dug up my old p8max and want to use it as a tablet for the kids. Would be nice to not have a pattern, pin, etc...
I'm having an issue getting into my lock screen and security settings. Every time I try to open it, it crashes. I can get into every other setting besides lock screen and security. Also can't use the search feature without it crashing. Galaxy S8+here. Anyone know a work around without having to factory reset my device?

I'm having the exact same problem on my s8+. Cannot use search function in settings menu or settings just crashes. Only discovered today actually, that I can't access lock screen and security now. Clicking on lock screen and security causes settings to crash. Have you been able to fix this? I really don't want to have to do a reset.
try safe mode so you can find out if it is caused by an app
If you forgot the login password , you can not access your phone
I'm having the exact same problem. Only noticed after installing bixby and it recommending setting up smart lock from the lock screen and then not being able to get in to the settings. Was working fine when I used it just a couple days ago, not sure if bixby has anything to do with it but have tried wiping cache and safe mode with no luck?
Edit: so just after getting a new firmware update the problem seems to be fixed. Not sure if this was an actual issue with the old firmware or any update would have fixed it.

So this has actually happened to me 2x. It's effecting my phone currently. The first time it just kinda fixed itself after an update thru T-Mobile. Sucks. Can't use Google Maps or Inbox at all either. So frustrating.
My settings crashes when I go to set "Emergency Alerts" and the Advanced settings in Mobile Hotspot. Wiping cache doesn't help. Anyone else have this happen?
