[Q] "Best" ROM - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am searching for the "best" 5.1.x ROM for my 1+1.
At first let me describe what i consider as best.
It should be more stable than my currently CM 12.1 Nightly (crashes 2-4 times a day and no update for 2 days now ). Something like 1 crash in a week wouldn't be a problem for me
I never had touchscreen issues but the new touch driver is sucking up battery while i would be fine with the old one :/
Performance : Buttery 60 fps in every normal (non gaming) task e.g. fast scrolling in settings, notification/quick settings (currently slightly laggy), home screen and so on...
no stuttering when doing heavier tasks
you know where this is going
Battery: 1 Day ( 6 am - 10 pm ) with 4-6 hours SOT
Of course moaaaar would be.... better xD
At LEAST as much features as cm12.1 but some more would be nice ^^
Since this is a question:
Do you know any ROM that fulfills my wishes?
Or is at least near this description?
Hope there will be responses soon

Search for the best battery saving OS

Hi ,
currently I'm running CodenameAndroid 3.3.0 on my Nexus S and everything runs smooth and works perfectly well for me, no doubts. But somehow I constantly get the feeling that the newer our operating system gets our batteries drain faster. Either this or my battery just gets old. However I'm searching for a Rom that has battery saving in main purpose. I dont care about playing games, the operating system or showing off how great my phone is. For this I have my Tablet The best solution for me would be a rom which is very low in batterydrain but as smooth as jellybean (maybe just port the transitions over). I know it might be hard to find something like this but is there any rom which matches my perception? Also a nice look would be cool, too ^^
I'm waiting for your responses!
I think you're looking for SlimBean. I'm on CNA too, the batter life is pretty bad
I tried SlimBean because I used SlimICS before but I miss too many features to change it back. Isn't there something else? Or which OS has the best batterylife in general?
i think gingerbread still has the best battery life.
androxide got me over 4hrs of screen time and a days usage with matrix
the new miui jb is also almost the same
IMO.....ICS's best battery life is on Kangy Ultra Ex 1.3 by DaXmax.
Just as long as u don't use Google talk since that's the ROMs only hiccup.
Then again like most will say.... its all depending on the user so hopefully it will help if u try.
I'm currently using the same developers JB ROM called paranoid Android..... so far it great but again I don't use all the newest features to much yet. I'm working myself slowing into the stuff.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S4G using tapatalk2
There is no ROM with super battery life, some better and some worst, very similar.
Most u can get from nexus s is +4hrs screen on.
And i don't care about those pathetic screen shots with +7hrs of screen on.
Fire up 3g/H stock browser, maps, music etc and we'll find out how good ur battery life is.
MIUI get's me aprox 4 hours and 50 minutes of on screen time. Lots of game playing, instant messaging, syncing, music, and social media (Instagram, twitter, tumblr.) And about 9 hours + when it get's to about 14%
EDIT: This is when using WIFI, not my 3G.

This question will produce every combo under the sun...but in the end no Real answer. Every phone/battery is different and how the person uses their phone. Apps installed, how much you use said apps, are the ram hogs, 2g, 3g, I could go on forever...just like this thread will if not eventually ignored or closed.
Closed, there is no answer to this question, the majority of battery drain will be the screen (depending on brightness) and whatever app you have installed and use.
Generally it's a matter of finding out what works for you.

OnePlus One CM11s VS CM12.1+ AK Kernel

Hello. So I am currently running an OPO on 5.1.1 with AK kernel and I get a solid 5:30 SoT with lots of restrictions (CPU frequency). My device is rooted with TWRP installed. I ask, is it worth reverting back to CM11 on 4.4.4? I'm looking for features and battery life mainly. I might change themes and kernels. But only on CyanogenMod ROM. If CM11s is the way to go, may a good kernel be recommended to go with it? Thanks for the help.
Well at this point 11S is pretty outdated, with CM13 already being out. CMOS12 is pretty good but getting a different CM12 or CM13 based ROM is best way to go in my eyes. I have tried going back to KK just to see what it is like and I couldn't use it because I had gotten used to how Lollipop and Marshmallow are. Also I don't think the increase in battery life is worth the loss of features with CM11S.
You should stay on cm12.1 and play with your kernel setting little bit!
I'd say give MahdiROM 2.9 a shot. It's CM11 and gives me great battery life, as well as being packed full of features. Even ran tests with play services forcing my phone to stay awake 100% of the time and can still push 5-7 hours SoT depending on usage. 7+ with that fixed up. ZaneZam's boeffla kernel builds for it work extremely well and I can honestly say I prefer it for CM11 even though I'm an avid AK user.
What about Boeffla Kernel? Is it better than AK?

There is no better or best kernel. There is just a kernel that fits your preferences.
I can only say that at least with my personal usage, the battery life did not change a bit going from kitkat, over lollipop, to marshmallow.
6h SOT is the bare minimum I get on regular usage no matter what. I've seen 8h SOT on K, L and M.
Always CM11/12/12.1/13 with stock kernel and stock settings, no undervolting, underclocking, Greenify or other bull**** apps. Also I don't use apps which are known for drain like facebook.
Seeing threads like this, I often think that users drain the most battery by constantly looking for tweaks and updates to reduce battery consumption.
Alibi screenshots from an early unofficial cm13 build:
There is almost no drain over night, same on data only.

Maybe your device got powerful battery and your app list isn't huge, otherwise most people struggle to get 6 hr sot on L & M. ?

Slim ROM review

Hi guys, I am writing a review about Slim ROM which can be found in this forum. The reason behind that is to help people like me who want the best out of their phone.
Generally speaking its difficult to define what a "good" ROM is so I will speak from my personal experience and according to my needs.
First of all I need to clarify that I am not advertising the ROM, the developer behind this ROM is totally unknown to me, but I felt the need to write all these, first of all to pay tribute to the excellent work he has done and secondly to help out people like me who experiment all the time to make the best of out of their phones, like I mentioned it earlier.
I have tested all the ROMS that can be found in this thread except, Meizu.
The most important thing to notice is that some ROMS are not working well in regions like mine where the networks for their cellphones are GSM for 2g, WDCMA for 3g and LTE for 4g.
All the Team Superluminal ROMS have for default the CDMA option and it is a pain in the ass to change that and even when you do that, after a restart all settings revert to default(CDMA)
So if you want to have Radios in the correct settings and plethora of options to play with I strongly suggest Slim ROM. (Nexus fly and Resurrection are also working just fine)
Another thing is the stability of the wifi. Slim ROM is the most stable ROM on that department, according to my personal experience.
I am currently on the 1.7 version and there is no bug that I noticed. Everything works smoothly, phone doesnt heat up(not a crazy gamer though) and everything works the time you need it without hickups, reboots and freezes.
GPS is locking right away and the battery (and I cant stress it enough) is at it BEST BY FAR. I am talking about 8 hours of SOT with wifi on and 2g signal or about 5 hours with mixed use.(GPS around half an hour, 4g for 3 hours, calling and vibering a lot)
The only downside for my taste is the absence of profile manager. But I found an amazing app called PhoneProfilesPlus on the app store which has a widget on your home screen showing your current profile. Once you tap on it it shows the profiles you have created and just by tapping on the desired one it changes to that profile. I mean about everything(GPS toggle on/off, Data toggle, Data preference(2g,3g,4g whatever), autorotation of screen, brightness, volumes, vibration). It does it all
To finish up I am not saying other ROMS are bad or anything, but for me, with the need my phone to be always there to use, a work tool actually, Slim ROM is by far the best thing that happened to me and my phone.
I hope I help other people who want stability, full function and bugless experience with this post.
Salute to all devs, for their amazing work and for bringing new life to our phones.
And a big thanks to @csolanol for his amazing work.
Thanks for your sharing.
I live in a place where they use "GSM for 2g, WDCMA for 3g and LTE for 4g", exactly as you have mentioned. And Team Superluminal CM13 ROM works perfectly. CDMA is not used by default and any radio setting is kept after reboot.
The battery life I have on Slim6 is essentially the same as that of TS CM13 or sMiUI.

I have no issue with TS ROM about the Radio setting (latest build 1007), after restart the setting still persist. For any other, the TS ROM is more or less the same, but maybe the SOT is 1 hour shorter in TS ROM.
Rom is this?

You're so wrong about this. I am currently using mi-globe (former sMIUI) and it doesn't stand a chance between slim6 or ts cm13. I can barely get 4 and a half SoT with mi-globe, as MIUI framework consumes some juice after all. Slim is by far the best ROM for battery in my personal opinion. I am talking about non tweaked versions of this ROMs.
@nioonline could you briefly explain how is your Slim rom setup? Which tweaks do you use? Do you use apps like Greenify, Amplifier or Kernel Auditor for getting that 8 hr SoT? Because this sot time, I have never seen with using Slim v1.7. I am also using my phone daily for whatsapp, instagram and messenger mostly, and some browsing (Most of the time connected to Wifi) Then I get usually 4.5 hr SOT.

Me too. Using 1.7. The most i get is 5.5 hr sot. Mostly is around 4.5hr too. Curious how to get 8hrs sot.
Hey guys sorry for not responding but I was pretty busy.
Nowdays I experiment with Nougat roms, but from what I can recall I had all the consuming feautures off. Double tap to wake, adaptive brightness ets.
I also used raw for scheduler and glass fish version 1.2 for the governor. Kernel untouched(interactive by default)
8 hours of SOT happens but if you use your phone mostly with wifi on, data off and cell set to 2g. I wrote it already on my first post.Otherwise in mixed used I told you its around 6 hours.
For my the key for good sots are two things. Idle state and cell signal consumption.
For medium users like me this is the most important. And with this rom after 6 to 8 hours of sleep while the phone is at idle state it has almost no comsumption.
The other thing is not to make my phone work all the time. So when I am at places with wifi I turn data off and use only 2g. Believe me it makes HUGE difference compared to 3g or 4g.
There is no profile manager in there but use an app like the one I recommend. I mean use set it up once and then with only one tap you change radios, display, sound, vibration settings etc. (for example one of my profiles is car.Open Bluetooth, turn off wifi, open data, set data to 3g/4g, enable autorotate to use my navigation app, open gps, set brightness to 100%.All that with one button)Magic stuff for me.
I don't use messenger but I think its a battery killer app. Don't know what you can do in this situation.....
(Also don't let google and other accounts synchronize bull****s like google fit, people details and crap like that)
Hope I helped a little bit.
There is an article about nexus 5x and how to make battery last more. Since we use the same cpu(sd808) take a look at it. It can help you furthermore, if you are a gamer or a social app "maniac".
Thank you for review! It helped me to choose rom!
I have to confirm. Slim Rom ist the best Rom for me. All Roms i tried (miui, smiui, ts Cyanogen 13) were very smooth but slim has the best battery life by far.

Note 3 with Phronesis, Magma NX or AspireTeam C9 Pro ROMs SOT (Screen On Time) Battery and custom Kernel Discussion.
Let me start by saying that this tread is born out of a passionate back and forth discussion I had with one the above-mentioned custom ROMs a rather ubiquitous assistant developer here on xda. It all began with his casual use of SOT (Screen On Time) hours he got when asked by a user why his battery was draining. He would, without fail, give the usual line of your usage vary from this to that, and each horse is different from the other, etc. etc. which is fine. But, somewhere along the line, he will casually throw in that he personally gets 7-8 hrs. SOT and possibly reach 11 hrs. That’s when I took him to task, until the moderator asked us to quit and start a discussion thread if we feel the need to go further on the subject of SOT.
So here I am, but first let me say this, I know that this subject is not easy and subjective, but I would like to approach it in a simple way, better yet, can there be a common point here where we all agree what would be a default setting on a custom ROM? I’m proposing WIFI active, Data 4G active, Location active and Bluetooth active. At least the first 3 come activated on every devise you purchase. Most people use these principal services for various connections in their daily lives. Let’s call this for the sake of this argument “Normal Use”.
Xda developers like to always remind users who they call “noobs” ( I certainly was once, and most probably still am) that this is a developer site and you should first break your bones before coming here. Sorry, but that isn’t reality, most custom ROM users are NOT developers, in fact many, many are noobs. In fact, the noobs are what makes a custom ROM successful. The more pages the thread garners and the more downloads, the more the developer appreciates his success and xda benefits.
Now I know there are many factors that paly into SOT, battery age, kernel, ROM, games, wild applications etc. But really, do you think it is wise to promote any custom rom by saying “I personally get 7-8 hrs. SOT and can possibly achieve 11hrs”. Remember, we are talking about a Note 3 stock battery not a custom one. Just imagine what that means; you go to work and come back and you’re still on SOT! I can’t achieve that on an iPad. We’re talking here about a 2017 technology on a 2013 mobile phone device, and the Note 3 was designed with Kitikat 4.2, which is even older.
Granted, you’re a developer or part of the know-how team who can snail tweak the device's software and kernel to achieve a higher SOT, just because you can and you know how. But there is always a price to pay in functionality. I will go even further to say that you do a disservice to the ROM quality and viability by saying that. Even if you achieve that with all those crippling tweaks, most people aren’t ready to use their device as a developer testing machine. Actually, giving them estimates on normal use of 3-4-5 hrs. SOT would be more attuned with reality, and people will not pester your thread with posts asking why they haven’t reached 7-8 hours SOT you bragged about. If they somehow reach a higher SOT on their own, all the praise to the developer. Instead, they have to deal with awful suggestions like “your battery must be dead or something”. Samsung’s best offers never reach more than 5hrs. SOT, if they did, they’d kill the competition. Neither do trimmed down ASOP ROMs.
Finally, I have flashed many ROMS since I got my Note 3, but for this thread let’s keep this discussion limited to Phronesis ROM, Magama NX and AspireTeam since they are the most popular with Note 3 users, and all use Android MM 6.0.1 I’ve used All 3 ROMs above with various kernels and never achieved more than 4 hours with “normal use” (all connections active) 5 hrs. is rare SOT for me even when I use new stock batteries. So, please let us know what is your SOT using what kernel with these ROMS on your Note 3. Do you actually reach 7-8 hrs. SOT? (forget 11. LOL). If you do, tells us how? And please don’t forget to give us some specs about your configuration.
Great @wild wadi
can i suggest something if you do not mind ?
i suggest that users who will post in this thread to start with a report that contains the following :
1 - Device model and Modem & Bootloader.
2 - Kernel and ROM.
3 - A screenshot of the battery usage.
4 - A screenshot of Gsam battery monitor ( App sucker,system,screen)
5 - if you are using Xposed ( mention the modules )
6 - If you are using Lspeed and Kernel auditor ( mention the tweaks )
I didnt understand "Phronesis, Magma NX or Aspire ROMs" part on OP and thread title. What about Darklord Reborn, AryaMOD s7edge, AryaMOD n7, Emassry266, Possibe FS and etc? Can it be generalized as "Touchwiz MM port"s? Or you are interested on only those ROMs?

My experience is with those 3, they are popular and sufficient to give us some idea. Let's not muddy the water here.
3.5 years old stock battery.
Kernel stock settings.
No Xposed

You 2 need a break! Or at least use ignore list! Ha ha ha !
Let be serious guys 8h SOT hard to get with normal battery and with the apks from theese days. Not many users have skills to set correct kernels. Most of the users like me let say want a normal battery 3 to 5 h top. But when you see some post from guys who get 7-8 h you start thinking how to get that, and from there desaster is comming. What i didnt hear from users is that they never say what apk are using ,when they use wi-fi or data or gps and what tweaks they do to their kernels.
Anyways have a good "fight" on this subject ....

So what is your usage? I shared mine on previous page here. But I dont know your usage. I have wifi/data/location/sync turned on. Bluetooth -> off (i dont have bluetoot device). My apps are present. I use new samsung battery less than a year old. I dont play games. I use quickedit app, mixplorer, mixplorer text editor, apltool x for modding. Youtube, mxplayer for watching video. Samsung music for listening audio (on screen off, not counted in sot value).
Kernel adiutor
1. undervolt (different pvs value device (google to find what it is) will tolerate different values). find your device's sweet spot. I decrease global to -20 mV and 288 to 650mV. I have seen users who got reboots when going below -10mV global and also users with using -50mV global with no issue. Different pvs number different results. Mine was 2 if my mind doesnt fool me.
2. Low memory killer (I adjust higher values so that it doesnt make device slow). It does not affect battery directly.
3. You can change cpu freq but with phantom kernel it is programmed good so I moslty dont even touch it.
Smart Manager:
I advise c5 or s7 sm because it can control apps in background better monitoring ram usage. It is also advised for s4 users since they have 2GB RAM w.r.t. 3 GB RAM of note3 (case for MagMa NX).
Bluelight filter:
Around 20% normal, in dimmer places 50%. At night up to 100%. I edit filter.cfg string for decreasing brightness.
Then check your battery stats to see what is using your battery. I have seen google services and system (adsprcd) using high battery. For google services there are xposed and magisk modules to optimize its used battery. I myself am using button mapper and kill playstore app after openning it (I also disable auto update notifications from playstore -> it updates only when I want). System (adsprcd) was caised by google assistant listening on background. I disabled "ok google" prompt. I use only via long press home button because I dont get hansfree usage at all.
These are wbat I remember from my tweaks and with my usage I get 6-8hrs sot. I hope they are useful
Dont expect getting high sot if you are playing online/heavy games, using media editing stuff (mainly video), bluetooth devices and watching full brightness 1080p youtube videos. But you will see the app usage in gsam battery monitor (stock battery usage will not give you 3rd party app usage info in spite of what is told). Also, we are now optimizing to decrease battery usage by infinity wallpaper on MagMa NX.
APP USAGE is VERY important. That is why when I dont get that info I cannot troubleshoot.
P.S. I use mobile app. "Ignore user" function has not been brought to android

Yeah thats true. Tweaks from other people using are not the same with other users. App disable, how frequent they have used their phones, on idle or etc. Even they send the screenshot and copied their setup, it depend on how we use our phone. For me SOT screenshot are rubbish. If you all need a good battery life phone, get the exynos version instead(for samsung phone). Theres many comparison talking about sd and exynos on samsung(not gonna explain here). If you got some money just buy the 10K mah zerolemon batteries. Theres too many thread talking about battery, kernels and tweaks, how much more do we need?

Kind of agree, except for maybe the aryamod. They're kinda old now, discontinued. Old as in the apps in magma and resis are like a year newer. I personally only use magma and resis anymore, and for the record, I get 24hrs SOT. I just don't unplug it ever.
Good thread. I am getting 3h 40m SoT on average with MagmaNX . N900t. Don't have any social media apps except instagram (which i froze).
I honestly believe this phone on anything more than Lollipop is incapable of getting more than 4hrs SoT with "normal" usage (wifi/mobile on). Even with mid-level power saving. The overwhelming number of people who report their SoT is definitive.
Ive been using roms for different phones for 6 years now. This is one of the few where there's such a disparity between what the developer says what "battery life" is and what the average user is reporting.
Whatever "Android System" and "Kernel" is, they are killing the battery
On Lollipop, I was getting 5.5 SoT. On average. With the same battery / apps / usage.
So I will be going back to stock Lollipop. It's unfortunate.

You may need to READ the THREAD TITLE and OP again. It is not only for TW MM port ROMs, but also for only 3 ROMs, Phronesis, MagMa NX and Aspire ROMs as said here.

I think it's because my battery is kinda worn - it was charged over 4700 (!) times so it may have lower capability... But I'm still satisfied with it! (That doesn't mean I wouldn't order new one soon )
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Labs
I didnt like the kernels on magma but I started tweeking the lss kernel because it gave me about those 6hours SOT. Therefore I undervolt like 35-50mV and some more stuff in synapse https://m.imgur.com/a/SHEi7 , but I still could not get those 8h.SOT. I did not play games, but i used for instance facebook/messenger, photos etc. I have my note3 for almost 3 years with the stock battery. I also disabled some unused apps. However, the phone performance like scrolling or moving from app to app was laggy. Honestly, now Im on Ressurection Remix https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-resurrection-remix-n-v5-8-3-vanilla-t3615227 and performance is great, no lags, everything is really smooth on android 7 but i miss the samsung apps and features. On the other hand, the samsung apps are badly optimized, bcs samsung. If i had to compare the samsung vs google original apps, i would say that google apps are better and smoother. But, the RR rom has bad battery life for me and Im thinking of returning to Magma now
Its all strange because when you watch original S8 battery test, the phone doesnt get more than 6-7 hours sot. I think that OEMs are holding all the progress back, bcs we can see that the same hours can be achieved on 4 year older phones. Thats why they dont update the old phones, bcs they just want us to buy their new product each year. They are better in performance, but for normal usage like browsing the internet or calling you dont see that much difference unless you play games. Im not even excited about new phones bcs its all the same with small changes.

You are doing a colossal mistake by not comparing the testing conditions. To get any comparable result you should test all those devices on same conditions same environment same reception same usage by yourself. Otherwise you can never compare those results.
I do my all test under nearly identical conditions thus I can compare my old results to my new results and say that "this tweak increases/decreases/doesnt change sot".
I have seen reports for google pixel xl previous year stating that it lasts 4-5 hours sot. I can assure you that under same conditions you cannot even get 3 hours with note 3.

+1.
Those new phones aren't even debloated as those custom ROMs, most of the services if not all of them are enabled.
Not mentioning their performance compared to note 3.

Best and most stable modern ROM with features working?

My ROM is causing my phone to be way too buggy so I need to reflash. The question, with 10 out, what ROM should I get?
Im currently on 7.1.2 so I want to go beyond that
I understand the outdated "test and see which is best" XDA mentality but my phone is for my job and I work all day so I can't be with a buggy phone and be testing, wiping, etc. every day/hours; I need a working phone and stable features. Switching phones is something on the table but honestly, there isnt a phone for me: S10+ gets its warrant voided if flashed and the Oneplus 7 Pro is missing a 3.5mm plus has no water rating. I really like the F(x)tec Pro1 but I need some more information before I jump the gun on a unknown maker.
Things I need is
* Bluetooth hands free MUST work.
* GPS must work
* Camera and its flashlight must work
* Data (4G/WiFi) must work
* I need battery life to maintain a stable level; I can't be carrying powerbanks or stuff like that.
* Responsive; The phone is showing its age but it must be able to keep doing simple tasks as fluid as it can
* Bluetooth hands free MUST work. (Yes, its that important)
What do you recommend?
Thanks
have you already tried LineageOs 16? It is very responsive and I have not encountered any major bug: This is why i am using it as my daily driver.
But I have no idea if Bluetooth hands free works to be honest, because I have no way to test it out.

For battery life and responsiveness, I would keep sultan's 7.1.
Right now I'm using Tugapower (Android 9). Pretty stable and everything you mentioned works just fine. There's a random reboot occasionally, but it might be some APP (it's very rare so I didn't mind to track). Also, battery life isn't as good as sultan's 7.1, but my battery is already 5 years old and accubattery estimate it to be at 2300mah (74%).

Fair enough. I would need someone to chime in how their Bluetooth hands free works but thank you for your input.

I cant play around with battery life being upstable or unsure.
You will get huge screen off batery drain in 9.0 roms. I tried everything and no success. I am using sultanxda 7.1, lightning kernel new 57 and magisk. Magisk Modules are FDE.AI and dns switcher (keweon dns). I get 4 hour SOT in wifi and 3 in mobile data. Batery effectively around 70%. Performance its pretty good.
I use bluetooth headset to make calls since my mic is broken and i had bo problems.
