OnePlus One CM11s VS CM12.1+ AK Kernel - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. So I am currently running an OPO on 5.1.1 with AK kernel and I get a solid 5:30 SoT with lots of restrictions (CPU frequency). My device is rooted with TWRP installed. I ask, is it worth reverting back to CM11 on 4.4.4? I'm looking for features and battery life mainly. I might change themes and kernels. But only on CyanogenMod ROM. If CM11s is the way to go, may a good kernel be recommended to go with it? Thanks for the help.

Well at this point 11S is pretty outdated, with CM13 already being out. CMOS12 is pretty good but getting a different CM12 or CM13 based ROM is best way to go in my eyes. I have tried going back to KK just to see what it is like and I couldn't use it because I had gotten used to how Lollipop and Marshmallow are. Also I don't think the increase in battery life is worth the loss of features with CM11S.

You should stay on cm12.1 and play with your kernel setting little bit!

I'd say give MahdiROM 2.9 a shot. It's CM11 and gives me great battery life, as well as being packed full of features. Even ran tests with play services forcing my phone to stay awake 100% of the time and can still push 5-7 hours SoT depending on usage. 7+ with that fixed up. ZaneZam's boeffla kernel builds for it work extremely well and I can honestly say I prefer it for CM11 even though I'm an avid AK user.

What about Boeffla Kernel? Is it better than AK?

There is no better or best kernel. There is just a kernel that fits your preferences.

I can only say that at least with my personal usage, the battery life did not change a bit going from kitkat, over lollipop, to marshmallow.
6h SOT is the bare minimum I get on regular usage no matter what. I've seen 8h SOT on K, L and M.
Always CM11/12/12.1/13 with stock kernel and stock settings, no undervolting, underclocking, Greenify or other bull**** apps. Also I don't use apps which are known for drain like facebook.
Seeing threads like this, I often think that users drain the most battery by constantly looking for tweaks and updates to reduce battery consumption.
Alibi screenshots from an early unofficial cm13 build:
There is almost no drain over night, same on data only.

Maybe your device got powerful battery and your app list isn't huge, otherwise most people struggle to get 6 hr sot on L & M. ?

[Q] Best rom + Kernel for battery life??

Hey, Just wondering what would you guys say is the best rom for + kernel for battery life that also isn't stupidly slow.. Oh and by battery life i don't mean like upkeep time i mean like basing it on screen on time like what roms can get 4+hours screen on time?
Cheers
stock rom 4.04
Oh and what kernel is better for Rascream rom Trinity or Matrix cause i don't really know much about rascream as i just started using it.
I'm able to squeeze over four hours of screen on time from most ROMs providing I don't reboot and minimise my modem usage. I'm currently using Pete Alfonso's Gingerbread kernel and Blandriid 2.3.7.
But I keep trying alternatives...
Yeah Atm i'm using latest Rascream with TEUV kernel and not sure atm but battery seems okay?
The biggest battery eater is the screen so try brainmaster's black cm9. It's about the only thing you can do apart from obviously keeping your screen brightness at minimum is put your phone in airplane mode when feasible. Nothing else will make much difference.
For GB i have to say, Oxygen 2.3.2 with Matr1x 11.0
As for ICS, i've yet to come across one, I do, however have fond memories of aosp+
To supplement bedalus' post: to base battery life on kernel+rom combination alone does not tell much of a story. I got the most out of my battery when I - used a pure black and static wallpaper, turned off auto brightness and manually tuned down to 10%-ish, kept apps and processes at a minimum (reduced app drawer to a single page, mostly stock). To reiterate, kernel+rom alone give few tangible differences when comparing battery life, from personal experience.
I use Matrix Kernel v19 and CyanogenMod v7. 24 hrs with light use, 12 hrs with heavy use.
used to use milestone 4 with air kernel.
use the latest version of both rom and kernel and set 200-1000.
you will see the difference and if you want to save more battery after following as above, then reply me.
I haven't really noticed a difference between ROMs. As stated a few posts above, the kernel and ROM themselves will only give a few minor boosts. Black vs white screens makes a world of difference. I use the inverted browser a lot and a majority of my apps tend to have dark themes which I personally prefer. Daily use, 3 or so hours of screen on time with the phone off the charger for 12-14 hours. It all varies on how I use my phone though on that particular day.

[Q] Stable kernel that improves battery life?

I realize this device has only been out for a very short time, but are there currently any stable/semi stable kernels that improve battery life? I've looked through a few kernel threads, but many seem to be unstable (which is to be expected) and optimized for overclocking. Are there any kernel developers focusing primarily on battery life?

On topic: stock kernel is good. I'm getting excellent battery life, 4+ hours screen on time is no exception. It's a common misconception a custom kernel is a magical battery life extender.

Both faux and franco kernels seems to be maturing fairly well. I can't personally vouch for franco, but I've been stable on every iteration (betas and stable releases) of faux's kernel, with the exception of some aggressive undervolting, which is not a really reflection on the kernel. Battery life has improved, particularly for sleep mode. Can't say the screen on time has improved dramatically, if at all, under these kernels.
FWIW, I have been fortunate enough to have a phone with adequate sound output, so I have not played at all the the sound mods available through faux, only the CPU/GPU/memory settings.

I tried all popular kernels on my GNEX. And by trying I don't mean flashing a new one every other day, used them for a couple of weeks at least. None of them produced any noticeable increase in battery life. That's a fact as well. I only used them for their options.
I'm curious what makes people think what the mechanism is behind hours of extra screen on time with a custom kernel (where custom is 95% or more original AOSP code).

I've read dozens of people claiming Franco, GlaDOS, Faux, Trinity, etc did wonders for their GNEX battery life. They never did for me, despite I used their recommendations and setup. I've yet to stumble upon actual proof (and I don't mean screen on time screenshots accompanied by opinions of users) a custom kernel actually uses less current than the stock one. If you have some, I'm very curious to read it.

There is a beta version posted on XDA that works with 4.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
BBS beta has been available in the forum for weeks. It's almost always on the first page, somehow people keep overlooking it.
As far as kernel battery life goes, I think it can matter in certain cases. For instance, I came from the S3, and I don't know about other phones, but the battery life on the CM 3.4 kernel was absolutely terrible (3.0 was fine). Custom kernel was needed not only to tame the battery drain, but to improve stability (fix hotbooting, etc.). Support for that device has been sub par for a long time on the AOSP front. If it weren't for KT747 and leanKernel, CM wouldn't have been usable at all (3.4+). Though, there is still a very valid argument that it wasn't usable anyhow. So custom kernels can make a difference in some cases.
Sleep is an issue with the stock kernel? I get 0.2%-0.4% drain per hour while idling. Zero issues here. If you want proof, I'd be happy to attach a BBS log for you guys to inspect. I don't disable sync or GPS. Never have and never will. You need to be in control of the apps on your phone.
Perhaps I should have clarified: my battery life is actually very good. I don't have any major complaints, and my idle drain is insanely low (the 0.2% - 0.4% figure claimed by Aerowinder isn't too far off). I'm coming from a Note 2 though, so although the battery life is good, I'm always looking for something to make it a bit better . I've been watching Franco and Faux kernels, but they seem hit or miss based on what I'm reading and the personal experience of my friends. I may wait a while longer for a stable release.

What is the good Custom ROM and kernel for 5+ SOT?

I used default stock ROM (6.0.1), RR (7.1.1), CM 12.1 (5.1.1) with squid kernel but still my battery don't get even 3 hrs SOT with greenify also. I mostly use it for facebook and whatsapp only. I cant afford a new phone due to this. Plz help me. TIA.

No rom will give you that much of a increase, stock is the best battery in general but there is no way any tweaking will increase that significantly.
Sounds like you need to replace the battery...

That maybe your opinion, but I disagree... Facebook Lite with it's built in Messenger is essentially a specially written browser, uses far less memory than Chrome, removes ads from videos (in general there are less ads throughout) plus you can still get push notifications. I have been using it for months.
If I am "completely wrong" give me some proof. In fact, although the regular Facebook is not the best, it is hardly "mother of all battery sucker apps". It is a space and data hog, but it doesn't use battery any more than REAL hogs like Snapchat, Netflix, Amazon Shopping, SoundCloud, or Outlook, in fact if you do some testing it has less effect on battery than you likely think (granted 2-3 years ago this was different, FB used to be one of the worst offenders).
Regardless, the OP was looking for an app to increase SOT... unless you can lower the battery usage of the display, you are not going to see increases in the magnitude the OP is looking for, from 3 hours to 5 hours, or a 66% increase in SOT. No app change or ROM is going to make a change even close to that.

3 hours SOT with greenify is a little off. you need to watch for wakelocks. better battery stats or wakelock detector can be useful to you. and also, if you have greenified the apps that you use the most, it will reopen those apps everytime you open the app, that could do more harm than good. you can try shallow hibernation, or just install naptime and tweak the doze parameters using GeraldRudi's method and quit greenify for some days just to see if this improves.
Then again, your battery could be the culprit, that's always a possibility
about ROM's, every ROM has it's merits, but Motorola really knows how to optimize their ROM, so for now, I think stock ROM gives the best battery life, even if that is marginally better than custom ROMs.
Kernels: Stock moto kernel is very efficient, but you might get a little bit more battery life with squid kernel, it has a great governor that relies on voting mechanism, plus it's just perfectly undervolted to get you some extra battery. probably a 15-20% difference than the stock one.
1) Use AOSP-CAF based ROM like Tesla.
2) Flash squid or Firekernel
3) Reduce the Max Freq to 1152Mhz and Min to 200Mhz
4) Use IntelliPlug Hotplug (Turn off Touch Boost and set Screen off frequency to 400Mhz)
5) Install Force Doze app and add Facebook, WhatsApp and other Battery consuming app to blacklist (Remember you will not get notifications from those app if screen is off).
6) Don't charge too quickly, always charge to 100% and plug when it discharged to below 10% (Recommended to charge at night).
It will improve your overall battery backup and somehow SOT.
At last i am totally agree with @acejavelin Facebook Lite app is made for low memory devices so it consume less memory and also less Battery. Also it's fast and have almost every features.
The real problem here is the device is going on 2, maybe 3 years old... the battery is at it's limit and will need to be changed to get really good SOTs.
My Moto G 2015 used to get 5+ hours SOT easy... not it's barely 3.5... and this is a backup device, it has NOTHING installed in it at all but it was used regularly for 18 months. The battery is just not what it used to be and if I am going to continue to use it as a alternate device I will need to replace the battery. Like it or not, these devices were not designed for more than 2 years of service.

downclocking the cpu is kind of redundant and saves less power than what it takes. the reason why for some users min-max is a battery saving governor. Besides, the performence hit is greater than the battery gained which is not at all more than 2% probably.
you should not fully charge your battery. you can, but the best practice is to charge upto 80%. And anything bellow 25% is not good.
the issue is either wakelock or dying battery, no tweak is going to save him if the underlying issue is not fixed, moreover, doze is the most sophisticated solution to save battery till now, downclocking, hotplugs these are pointless unless one's usage is known to us. I'd suggest to have doze editor if you must have a doze interface.
You can use aosp caf osprey by Ahmed hady...it will give 6 hrs plus sot from moderate to normal use..

I recommend:
Lineage OS 14.1
AOSP Extended
Stock Nougat
Resurrection Remix
You should also look into custom kernels to fix jitters. Try out some of those ROMs first. AOSP Extended (AEX Rom) is quite speedy and feature packed.
For the ROM try AEX it is a very good ROM.
Also CAF Nougat is good and has a good battery backup.
For the kernel I'd say: UD kernel (based on stock moto kernel) or firekernel.
By tweaking you can get some very good results.

Just curious how long does the battery last (SOT) with this configuration?
My battery backup is very good for simple stuff like texting, fb, camera, Snapchat.. (It lasts about 14h) but in battery usage it is said SOT: 2h (which is very poor actually.)

I haven't actually recorded the SOT since I was only looking for performance but I'll try that tomorrow and see. Anyways, I have never reached a SOT higher than 4h before in nougat roms (I think it was XenonHD with Firekernel) but with Marshmallow I can reach a SOT as high as 8 or more (RR with Firekernel) mainly due to Amplify and PowerNap Xposed.

For a daily usage (fb, Snapchat, sms camera, portable hotspot, xda, browsing and cellular data on..., no games) I have about 4h SOT.
Though idk if it is an issue (I guess so) but I can stay about 1h with 1%...
My config is :
AEX v4.4 + UD kernel 4.0
CPU: interactive_pro 1152Mhz max, 200Mzh min
Touchboost disabled.
CPU hotplug: Alucard
GPU: Simple_Ondemand
I/O scheduler: fiops
Misc: Arch power enabled and gentle fair sleepers disabled.
I also use ForceDoze.
The temperature reaches 38°C max (100°F) (unless it is plugged) which is very good when heavy usage.

Hi, I Was wondering whats the different between this custom kernels?
My moto G is on LineageOS 14.1, stock kernel (I think, i didn't flash anything else besides TWRP and the ROM). And for daily use i can get up to 5h 30m of SOT, so the battery practically last the entire day (like 12h of use between charges) and everything is fluid, with occasional lags when performing heavy multitasking.

Well I tried a bunch of kernels and rom and tried to figure out which one is the best for me.. Like I never got 5h SOT with lineage Os that was most likely 3h so it kinda depends on your usage. So it might depends on your usage and your phone even though we have the same model..

Android P battery life on custom ROMs

As the title say, which ROM has better battery life among android P custom roms? im asking this because I did install stock android p and I faced huge battery draining on stock + heat. I don't wanna disable adaptive brightness for that either. So im wondering whether the battery life is batter on customs roms. If so please do mention the rom you have
i cant stand adaptive brightness not only does it kill battery, but it scales at the worst times and not in the correct intervals. i believe my preferences and environments change to much for the "machine learning" to do its magic.
ANYWAYS. I believe carbon rom with flash kernel gave me the best battery. i used the unified script with it, and enabled Smart pixels (on with battery saver, 75% move every 10 min) . With that setup i was able to get about 6hr SOT moderate to heavy usage.
Aside from that, any lineage based rom is going to be good on battery. A few people here swear by stock rom with a community provided kernel. Give elementalX a try on stock rom and see if it helps.
