Search for the best battery saving OS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi ,
currently I'm running CodenameAndroid 3.3.0 on my Nexus S and everything runs smooth and works perfectly well for me, no doubts. But somehow I constantly get the feeling that the newer our operating system gets our batteries drain faster. Either this or my battery just gets old. However I'm searching for a Rom that has battery saving in main purpose. I dont care about playing games, the operating system or showing off how great my phone is. For this I have my Tablet The best solution for me would be a rom which is very low in batterydrain but as smooth as jellybean (maybe just port the transitions over). I know it might be hard to find something like this but is there any rom which matches my perception? Also a nice look would be cool, too ^^
I'm waiting for your responses!

I think you're looking for SlimBean. I'm on CNA too, the batter life is pretty bad

I tried SlimBean because I used SlimICS before but I miss too many features to change it back. Isn't there something else? Or which OS has the best batterylife in general?

i think gingerbread still has the best battery life.

androxide got me over 4hrs of screen time and a days usage with matrix
the new miui jb is also almost the same

IMO.....ICS's best battery life is on Kangy Ultra Ex 1.3 by DaXmax.
Just as long as u don't use Google talk since that's the ROMs only hiccup.
Then again like most will say.... its all depending on the user so hopefully it will help if u try.
I'm currently using the same developers JB ROM called paranoid Android..... so far it great but again I don't use all the newest features to much yet. I'm working myself slowing into the stuff.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S4G using tapatalk2

There is no ROM with super battery life, some better and some worst, very similar.
Most u can get from nexus s is +4hrs screen on.
And i don't care about those pathetic screen shots with +7hrs of screen on.
Fire up 3g/H stock browser, maps, music etc and we'll find out how good ur battery life is.

MIUI get's me aprox 4 hours and 50 minutes of on screen time. Lots of game playing, instant messaging, syncing, music, and social media (Instagram, twitter, tumblr.) And about 9 hours + when it get's to about 14%
EDIT: This is when using WIFI, not my 3G.

This question will produce every combo under the sun...but in the end no Real answer. Every phone/battery is different and how the person uses their phone. Apps installed, how much you use said apps, are the ram hogs, 2g, 3g, I could go on forever...just like this thread will if not eventually ignored or closed.

Closed, there is no answer to this question, the majority of battery drain will be the screen (depending on brightness) and whatever app you have installed and use.
Generally it's a matter of finding out what works for you.

[Q] Best rom + Kernel for battery life??

Hey, Just wondering what would you guys say is the best rom for + kernel for battery life that also isn't stupidly slow.. Oh and by battery life i don't mean like upkeep time i mean like basing it on screen on time like what roms can get 4+hours screen on time?
Cheers
stock rom 4.04
Oh and what kernel is better for Rascream rom Trinity or Matrix cause i don't really know much about rascream as i just started using it.
I'm able to squeeze over four hours of screen on time from most ROMs providing I don't reboot and minimise my modem usage. I'm currently using Pete Alfonso's Gingerbread kernel and Blandriid 2.3.7.
But I keep trying alternatives...
Yeah Atm i'm using latest Rascream with TEUV kernel and not sure atm but battery seems okay?
The biggest battery eater is the screen so try brainmaster's black cm9. It's about the only thing you can do apart from obviously keeping your screen brightness at minimum is put your phone in airplane mode when feasible. Nothing else will make much difference.
For GB i have to say, Oxygen 2.3.2 with Matr1x 11.0
As for ICS, i've yet to come across one, I do, however have fond memories of aosp+
To supplement bedalus' post: to base battery life on kernel+rom combination alone does not tell much of a story. I got the most out of my battery when I - used a pure black and static wallpaper, turned off auto brightness and manually tuned down to 10%-ish, kept apps and processes at a minimum (reduced app drawer to a single page, mostly stock). To reiterate, kernel+rom alone give few tangible differences when comparing battery life, from personal experience.
I use Matrix Kernel v19 and CyanogenMod v7. 24 hrs with light use, 12 hrs with heavy use.
used to use milestone 4 with air kernel.
use the latest version of both rom and kernel and set 200-1000.
you will see the difference and if you want to save more battery after following as above, then reply me.
I haven't really noticed a difference between ROMs. As stated a few posts above, the kernel and ROM themselves will only give a few minor boosts. Black vs white screens makes a world of difference. I use the inverted browser a lot and a majority of my apps tend to have dark themes which I personally prefer. Daily use, 3 or so hours of screen on time with the phone off the charger for 12-14 hours. It all varies on how I use my phone though on that particular day.

i like sense 4+ wayyy better with the exception of all the BLUE its ****ing ugly because theres some green here and there and then there's some blue here and there.. it's a unpolished product that doesn't look all that great...
AS FAR AS PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT BATTERY LIFE that's insane when i hear that I average about 18 hours of moderate use, 8-10 of heavyish use 4-5 of constant non stop use.
idk nothing about no choppy graphics either..
18h is low... Ive used my device average (lots of wifi/browsing, remote controlling PC etc) on this charge, 1d 11h 45min as I type this.. The battery is at 58%...

Of course not on sense. DarkJelly CM10 build 24 with stock CM kernel, no OC or UC.
I remember I got around 28-32h worth of batterylife on ViperS 1.2.1 (ICS) with zarboz kernel though. Still with no OC/UC.
Oh, and I dont run any of those crappy "battery saver" apps. I just make sure to kill tasks on a regular basis.
I'm running Liquid Smooth with the Bubba Kernel and my phone is lightning fast, no choppy graphics either. I too can't understand the complaints about battery life when there are so many things you can do to reduce the battery drain. I've played music for about 7 hours some talk time and web browsing and having the screen on for most of the day and and my battery was at 70% over 11 hours or so
nice

That's Nice... I just Made The Switch to TrickDroid 9.1.. I was About To go with viper until I read all the issues people are having..
TrickDroid Always Seems to please. its the only rom I ever used..(well the only one that's actually stable) and I do believe its better then ICS..
QS Benchmark gave me 6870!!!! Compared To ICS .. I was getting 5100!
Gave it a Full Charge__ now Lets see how The battery Treats ME,
insane..

and also.. are the non sense based roms better??? I actually like the sense widgets and all..
Sense has OK battery life but if my data is always on its worst .
I tried jb for a day but I had to go back to sense because of the camera, keyboard, and the auto data on off for mms
But I do love the dialer for ics and fullscreen id

[q] PACman rom questions

Ok so i have two questions pertaining to PACrom.
For thew first one, is it just me or is the battery life on this rom not that great, i have had mine go from 100% to 76% in less than an hour and my screen on time was less than 15 mins, is there a way to correct this since even greenify or underclocking it doesnt even make a dent in it.
For question two, it might be a little noobish, but i came from sense and personally loved sense but for some reason every sense rom i flashed acted a little laggy and i love the smoothness of CM but i HATE the AOSP camera with a passion, is there any alternative camera apps that are almost or just as good as the sense camera and the panorama camera sense had?
Thank you in advance for helping me.
Is Google Services using a high amount of battery? That was my problem with the battery life in the rom. If so, delete the data for all the Google apps via settings>apps>all.
As for the camera, you can try Camera MX which has live effects like Sense but it runs slow on my phone. You should try out this awesome Sense rom

(Q) GB vs ICS vs JellyBean vs KK

My question, who of these android versions are battery stable and performance?
I tested all(except ics) but i'm not sure if i did something bad, idk
GB:Laggy, (4000 antutu score), but battery life its really really high
ICS: Not tested
4.1.2: I think its very fast, really fast(4400-4900 antutu score), but my battery drains like 1% every 5-10 mins without doing anything
4.2.2: Heavier than CM10, its a little bit laggy more than cm10(4200-4500 antutu), but the same thing with battery life
4.3: I really dont like this, for me its laggy, and rip battery life (3800-4000 antutu)
KK4.4:Well 4.4 its like very new, and idk if its gonna be good for SL, i feel KK laggy,(i mean, if u install multiple apps, its like very slow, in comparation with the others android version), but battery life isnt bad, but not good(4200 antutu score)
Idk if i did something bad, but, u have less battery use in cm10-cm10.1? i tried like everything and my battery is like new (1 week), and drops very fast
a lot of the battry drain its for the screen(idk why, i can have all the brightness low and its the same thing), and media service (idk how to stop that really)
Greetings, i hope someone knows a good cm10+ rom with good battery life
i think X-gamerz ROM is the one try it if you are looking for performence and battry life
go for cm11 and then ehndroix v ....best results
for good battery....use it it 3-4 battery cycles and also calibrate the battery regularly.!!

The current CM11 offers excellent battery life.. It's what you run in your device that's making it bad. Instead of blaming the ROM, take a really close look at the user apps installed instead. The user is usually the main contributor for bad battery life.

Slim ROM review

Hi guys, I am writing a review about Slim ROM which can be found in this forum. The reason behind that is to help people like me who want the best out of their phone.
Generally speaking its difficult to define what a "good" ROM is so I will speak from my personal experience and according to my needs.
First of all I need to clarify that I am not advertising the ROM, the developer behind this ROM is totally unknown to me, but I felt the need to write all these, first of all to pay tribute to the excellent work he has done and secondly to help out people like me who experiment all the time to make the best of out of their phones, like I mentioned it earlier.
I have tested all the ROMS that can be found in this thread except, Meizu.
The most important thing to notice is that some ROMS are not working well in regions like mine where the networks for their cellphones are GSM for 2g, WDCMA for 3g and LTE for 4g.
All the Team Superluminal ROMS have for default the CDMA option and it is a pain in the ass to change that and even when you do that, after a restart all settings revert to default(CDMA)
So if you want to have Radios in the correct settings and plethora of options to play with I strongly suggest Slim ROM. (Nexus fly and Resurrection are also working just fine)
Another thing is the stability of the wifi. Slim ROM is the most stable ROM on that department, according to my personal experience.
I am currently on the 1.7 version and there is no bug that I noticed. Everything works smoothly, phone doesnt heat up(not a crazy gamer though) and everything works the time you need it without hickups, reboots and freezes.
GPS is locking right away and the battery (and I cant stress it enough) is at it BEST BY FAR. I am talking about 8 hours of SOT with wifi on and 2g signal or about 5 hours with mixed use.(GPS around half an hour, 4g for 3 hours, calling and vibering a lot)
The only downside for my taste is the absence of profile manager. But I found an amazing app called PhoneProfilesPlus on the app store which has a widget on your home screen showing your current profile. Once you tap on it it shows the profiles you have created and just by tapping on the desired one it changes to that profile. I mean about everything(GPS toggle on/off, Data toggle, Data preference(2g,3g,4g whatever), autorotation of screen, brightness, volumes, vibration). It does it all
To finish up I am not saying other ROMS are bad or anything, but for me, with the need my phone to be always there to use, a work tool actually, Slim ROM is by far the best thing that happened to me and my phone.
I hope I help other people who want stability, full function and bugless experience with this post.
Salute to all devs, for their amazing work and for bringing new life to our phones.
And a big thanks to @csolanol for his amazing work.
Thanks for your sharing.
I live in a place where they use "GSM for 2g, WDCMA for 3g and LTE for 4g", exactly as you have mentioned. And Team Superluminal CM13 ROM works perfectly. CDMA is not used by default and any radio setting is kept after reboot.
The battery life I have on Slim6 is essentially the same as that of TS CM13 or sMiUI.

I have no issue with TS ROM about the Radio setting (latest build 1007), after restart the setting still persist. For any other, the TS ROM is more or less the same, but maybe the SOT is 1 hour shorter in TS ROM.
Rom is this?

You're so wrong about this. I am currently using mi-globe (former sMIUI) and it doesn't stand a chance between slim6 or ts cm13. I can barely get 4 and a half SoT with mi-globe, as MIUI framework consumes some juice after all. Slim is by far the best ROM for battery in my personal opinion. I am talking about non tweaked versions of this ROMs.
@nioonline could you briefly explain how is your Slim rom setup? Which tweaks do you use? Do you use apps like Greenify, Amplifier or Kernel Auditor for getting that 8 hr SoT? Because this sot time, I have never seen with using Slim v1.7. I am also using my phone daily for whatsapp, instagram and messenger mostly, and some browsing (Most of the time connected to Wifi) Then I get usually 4.5 hr SOT.

Me too. Using 1.7. The most i get is 5.5 hr sot. Mostly is around 4.5hr too. Curious how to get 8hrs sot.
Hey guys sorry for not responding but I was pretty busy.
Nowdays I experiment with Nougat roms, but from what I can recall I had all the consuming feautures off. Double tap to wake, adaptive brightness ets.
I also used raw for scheduler and glass fish version 1.2 for the governor. Kernel untouched(interactive by default)
8 hours of SOT happens but if you use your phone mostly with wifi on, data off and cell set to 2g. I wrote it already on my first post.Otherwise in mixed used I told you its around 6 hours.
For my the key for good sots are two things. Idle state and cell signal consumption.
For medium users like me this is the most important. And with this rom after 6 to 8 hours of sleep while the phone is at idle state it has almost no comsumption.
The other thing is not to make my phone work all the time. So when I am at places with wifi I turn data off and use only 2g. Believe me it makes HUGE difference compared to 3g or 4g.
There is no profile manager in there but use an app like the one I recommend. I mean use set it up once and then with only one tap you change radios, display, sound, vibration settings etc. (for example one of my profiles is car.Open Bluetooth, turn off wifi, open data, set data to 3g/4g, enable autorotate to use my navigation app, open gps, set brightness to 100%.All that with one button)Magic stuff for me.
I don't use messenger but I think its a battery killer app. Don't know what you can do in this situation.....
(Also don't let google and other accounts synchronize bull****s like google fit, people details and crap like that)
Hope I helped a little bit.
There is an article about nexus 5x and how to make battery last more. Since we use the same cpu(sd808) take a look at it. It can help you furthermore, if you are a gamer or a social app "maniac".
Thank you for review! It helped me to choose rom!
I have to confirm. Slim Rom ist the best Rom for me. All Roms i tried (miui, smiui, ts Cyanogen 13) were very smooth but slim has the best battery life by far.
