I've been having a problem lately with my Captivate. At my work there's a complete dead zone where I lose reception completely (the 4 bars are replaced by a circle with a cross through it). However, when I leave work and go back home the reception never comes back - I've waited and waited and waited, but it still stays Xed out.
The phone requires a restart, and after that it picks up reception normally.
has anyone experienced this?
Did you try enabling flight mode, then turning it back off? Same effect as restarting the phone for your signal problem.
But in answer to your question, I've never had that problem. I have had a problem getting my signal back, but I just hold the phone in the open for a bit, and then stick it in my pocket again once I obtain service.

I have, and it doesn't work. I have to turn the phone off and back on again.
I have the exact same issue.
I was having the same problem. They changed out the SIM card and have not had the problem sense. If your SIM has been through a few phones my not hurt to get a new one.

Thanks, I just ordered a new SIM card online. My existing one is 4 years old and scratched up like crazy, that may be it.
On a different note, once I receive my new SIM card does anyone know how to associate it with my plan? The ebay listing for the SIM card said to do it through the following website but I'm not sure which option is correct ("upgrade phone" perhaps?)

For simplicities sake and for your own safety, take it into at&t and have them do it. At least you know it will be done correctly.

I've been through many AT&T stores and they always charge me $25 for a new SIM. How'd you get free ones?

You must be going to private franchises because AT&T charges them for SIMs. If you call 611, they would make a notation to your account that you get a free one and the franchise would get reimbursed by AT&T.
I had to get a new SIM with my phone and it experiences this same issue. Has anybody had any luck with getting rid of the problem?

I don't believe they were private. They are regular at&t stores. But next time I'm definitely calling 611 for my similar problems

Who is your service provider? I had the same problem with Telus in Canada and I managed to resolve it.
Go to Settings>Wireless & Network Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names and open whichever one corresponds to your SP. Make sure the first two fields (Name and APN) are filled out. When I bought mine everything was checked except for these. The information you have to enter will vary based on your service provider, but if you give them a call or check another phone which is also with them you should be able to figure out what to put.

Try a new simcard. That happened to me, one day i noticed all data stopped working, then withink 30 mins my voice was gone too. Luckily my Nexus came with a new sim so i popped that in and called T-Mo and provisioned the new SIM. Works better than ever now. I recommend everyone use a new sim card in the phone because it really does help with the phone.

It is rare for a new sim card to be required. if your phone is stock, you are best to call tech support. Repushing the sim is often enough. Besides here, it's $10 for a new sim and $25 to provison it unless waived by tech support our it's a new activation.

IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO LTE ON AN AT&T PHONE, YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!
IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A SIM CARD THAT WILL FIT IN THE N5, YOUR SIM IS LTE CAPABLE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET THE RIGHT DATA PROVISION. YOU DO NOT NEED TO GET A NEW SIM!!!!!!!
This happened when the N4 came out and I came to the rescue far too many times to count...and I've already started to read threads about it so here we go!
You just bought an N5 and are either worried about getting LTE or can't get LTE connectivity on your N5. It's a really big issue with a really simple solution. You need to make sure of a few things.
1. You have a SIM that can receive LTE frequency
2. Your data plan is a LTE provisioned plan
3. Your APNs include an LTE ANP
1 & 2 can be solved at the same time and 3 should solve itself in most cases.
Here's the big issue: AT&T doesn't have a data provision for the N5 (or the N4). Your customer service rep will take the IMEI number from your phone when you ask for a new SIM and it will come back with their basic GSM plan by default. This caused awful data speeds on the N4 and will disallow LTE on the N5 so you need to inform them that this will happen before they go through the process. A nice rep will understand. An unknowledgeable rep will claim there is nothing they can do. Ask to speak to the manager. If none of them can help, take your new LTE capable SIM and walk away.
Now after you leave the store call up customer service and tell them you just got a new *insert LTE capable AT&T device here* and you can't find the IMEI number. Tell them you tried to go into the store and they were unhelpful so you're calling. The person will immediately become helpful and generate an IMEI number. They will provision your data using said serial number and you'll be good to go.
BEFORE inserting your SIM, start up your N5. Go through the setup process that you have to go through and then turn it back off. Plug in your SIM and reboot.
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > more > Mobile Networks > Access point Names. In there you should see an AT&T LTE APN and it should be already selected. If not, select it. This should be all you need to do. It really is that simple.
NOTES:
- All SIMs that fit in the N4 and N5 are LTE capable
- Here is what your AT&T APN should look like
- If you have any issues, post and I'll do my best to help
As always, Thanks are appreciated.
So even if the rep in store "can't help" I'll still walk out with the SIM card I need? Also, If I don't have my N5/IMEI in hand when I go in can I still setup a plan and get a SIM card? Thanks for the post!
EDIT: Going in with no phone I don't know rather to tell them I have a N5 coming or try to find a friends that will give me their IMEI that I can give them...
You'll get a SIM card no matter what because those are free...it just won't be provisioned properly unless you get a knowledgeable rep.
Having an IMEI in hand makes life easier; having your N5 will make it way easier. The SIM needs to be activated in the store and they will need an IMEI to activate. Just wait till you get your N5 to go through all this. It won't do anything to help you until you get it.
The IMEI will be on the SIM tray!

Ok, I will wait until Wednesday to go in then...one last thing, if it gets to the point I have to call ATT, when I say I can't find the IMEI won't they just tell me to flip the phone over or look in the settings, etc.. instead of generating one?
No.
They will ask you if there is a barcode / serial thing on the back of your device. You say no. Boom, done.
edit: don't forget to hit the thanks button!
So just going in and asking to exchange your sim for a micro sim isn't enough?
I have a note 3 right now with 4g. I was going to use the same Sim card in the note and put in the N5. Should it work out of the box or do I still have to take it in the store? How will I know that I have a an imei card?

No. The SIM must be activated and an IMEI is required to activate.

Do you have a SIM that will fit in the N5? If not, follow my steps. If so, skip ahead to calling AT&T customer support because ALL MICRO SIMS ARE LTE CAPABLE.
What do you mean by an IMEI card? All phones come with an IMEI.
great. AT&T why are you so terrible.

Hey guys I'm going to switching to straight talk att am I ordered the lte micro sim from them and plan to activate tomorrow should I expect to jump through hoops to get lte or expect the same issues as att users...not sure this is my first try at prepaid
same things will happen. You'll need to get an LTE data provision but will be unable to using your N5 IMEI

If you have 4g on your note 3 it means you already have a LTE data plan. All you need to do is take the sim out of your note 3 and pop it into your n5, no need to call anyone or make an unnecessary trip to the store.
4g =/= LTE in AT&Ts case. 4g can mean HSPA+ 4g!
If you have access to LTE currently YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING.

Look, I know you want to dumb down stuff and give advise but some of it is just incorrect, not dumbed down.
Dial *#06# on any Android smartphone and it'll display the IMEI.

It's possible that the reps @ the AT&T Stores in different areas aren't properly keying the IMEI in properly. If at all possible have them SCAN the IMEI barcode on the back of the phone.
I went down to the AT&T store here locally (Bay Area, CA) and the only problem I had in the process was a 30 minute wait to see one of the reps.
I was previously on an unlimited data plan that I've had setup since I got my original iPhone 3G - 5 years ago. NOT an LTE plan by any stretch.
He went in the back and grabbed the sim and started the process of adding it to the account.
He scanned the sim and then scanned my phone -- It CORRECTLY recognized the device as a D820 **AND** automatically updated my data plan to the LTE Unlimited.
The only thing the rep had to do was press confirm a number of times. Not once did he have to manually adjust anything.
We waited about 5 minutes for the sim to activate, slipped it into my N5 and powered it up - Instant LTE service.
So AT&T *does* have the IMEI Registered for the N5 with a corresponding LTE Plan. If someone is trying to key it in and getting an error.. they're likely not typing something correctly.
I'm already using a note 3 on at&t with LTE already enabled on my plan. Also,my note 3 already uses a micro-SIM. I should be good to just swap my SIM into the n5 right? I have written down the default AT&T APN just in case it gets list on the n5.

My phone is getting worse now.
Even though it catches signals and the bar is about 3-4, this phone is not catching Verizon services.
Sim in installed and it keep saying no service area.
Sometimes when I go outside for 30 min, it finally get verizon service, but I can't text and call, but data was working.
Is it sim card problem or Simcard tray problem?
I'm sure it's not software problem because I have done all things that I could do with software.
please help!

Hi everyone,
has any of you ever had network problems, as can be seen in the video?
For a few days now both network connections have been breaking down when I try to make a call. But that doesn't always happen. Sometimes I can make 10 calls in a row and everything is fine, and sometimes nothing works. It doesn't matter which SIM I use to make the call. The problem occurs with both cards. If that happens, then either directly when dialing a number, or immediately after hanging up.
I've never seen anything like this. And I wonder if it's the software, the SIM tray, one of the cards or the network operator itself.
Can anybody please help me? This is quite annoying.
PS: Sorry for the German settings. „Keine SIM-Karte“ = No SIM card // „Dienst nicht verfügbar“ = no service

I did these 4 steps, but the first time I tried to call, both connections dropped again. Can there be a hardware problem at all? Looks more like a software issue, doesn't it?

The sim card, the usual hardware suspect...
They can be damaged by ESD; handled like a stick of ram.
ESD may not manifest itself for weeks, months even years. Insults are cumulative.
It's not expensive but it is a pain, try to not damage it as it left the plant A-OK.
Just like ram sticks poor handling is the cause of almost all sim card failures.

So, am I getting you right? I just go to the store and have the SIM card replaced and everything should work again?
I've tried a few things now. If I set SIM 2 to GSM, everything is fine. The connection doesn't break. I believe it is the 3G connection. And that's why these crashes could occur when I make calls. SIM 2 doesn't support VoLTE, so it switches to 3G.
EDIT: I've tried different things now. I swapped SIM 1 and 2 back and forth. I also used my two SIM cards alternately with a third SIM card. The problem persists. Could a hard reset help or should I send the device for repairs straight away?
Same problem here. Setting sim 1 to GSM only, and sim2 to LTE fixed my problem for a while. This has something to do with dual sim handling.

This is soooo anoying. Have you had this problem for a long time or did it only come recently? Could this have something to do with a recent update?
I bought the phone a month ago, and while I was setting it up it received 5 updates including android 11. So I have no experience prior to Android 11.

No, I don't see any point in doing that. I swapped the SIM cards and even tried other cards and the problem was still there. If something had to be cleaned, it would be the SIM tray. But as already written, there are no disconnections when a SIM is operated in 2G. I think that rather means that it is a software problem.

I have this same problem with phone dropping off the network. For me it started after the first Android 11 update. I have full signal levels at home but if I try to make a call signal level for both sim cards drops and I get a message that mobile network is not available. Doesn't happen always but pretty often.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with how the phone handles dual-sim operations...

Since I use the second SIM only for business calls, I have already set it to GSM only. Today I noticed that I still have outages. So apparently to force 2G is no longer of any use. :/
About 5G: It has been active on my device since I got it. Perhaps there was an update on this from your carrier.
