Hello,
I've been looking to replace my Nexus 5 and having reviewed several phones I am considering a Mi4.
I do have some concerns though listed below.
1. MIUI - Can I still give this a vanilla look and feel i.e. Nova launcher? I don't like the idea of having all my apps on my homescreen.
2. The MI4i is much cheaper and will be newer - should I consider this instead especially at that price.
3. It doesn't have Lollipop - does this really make a difference if you are running MIUI - the Mi4 and Mi4i look the same.
4. Spec wise it doesn't look to different to the Nexus 5 and maybe I should just wait - is there a newer version due out soon?
Not sure how much longer my Nexus 5 will last - plus the front camera is awful and battery doesn't last a full day.
Thanks
J

Ivans Lollipop might be better if you don't like MIUI.
I think you will like the device. I am a Nexus 5 owner and just got my girlfriend the FDD and TD ("China Telecom") version of the Mi4. She's had an iPhone 5 until then and is very happy with the device.
The fact that it still runs Android 4.4 annoys me more than her. Even though the device is better/newer hardware-wise (3GB vs 2GB RAM, Snapdragon 801 vs 800, camera...) there are some minor hiccups here and there. More so than the N5 already has. Lollipop is coming I heard and I keep an eye out. However, the Ivans Lollipop is supposed to run rather smoothly. However, I will leave MIUI on hers for now in the hope to smoothen the transition phase from iOS to Android. She likes the look of Material Design better so I will eventually replace MIUI at some point.
From my point of view as a N5 (and every other Nexus before it) user: fantastic device, especially at this price point. Can't go wrong with it.
EDIT: let me address your points a little better:
1) Yes, saw a how to for Google Play Launcher. Should be the same. Note: installing Google Play Services was extremely easy. Simple downloads. No flashing/rooting involved.
2) Get the MI4. The MI4i just has less RAM (2GB) iirc and is just 100RMB cheaper.
3) See 2)
4) Apparently there will be a MI5 in June/July. But that is supposed to be the announcement date if I am not mistaking. Availability is something entirely different. They are keeping it extremely low on purpose. That's their marketing strategy. Creating a hype through low availability. And I can tell you from what I see every day: it is working. So don't expect to be able to get the device any time soon. I went for the MI4 even though I knew there will be a MI5.
1. MIUI - Can I still give this a vanilla look and feel i.e. Nova launcher? I don't like the idea of having all my apps on my homescreen.
I have a MI4 and use Nova Launcher for the very reason you mentioned. Works pretty well and very smoothly.
2. The MI4i is much cheaper and will be newer - should I consider this instead especially at that price.
You don't want to go for the MI4i. Way lower specs and a cheap look and feel. The MI4 together with a wooden backcover looks and feels like a phone that Samsung and Co would charge you 500$ for.
3. It doesn't have Lollipop - does this really make a difference if you are running MIUI - the Mi4 and Mi4i look the same.
I had MIUI installed until yesterday. What I did not like is, that it has plenty of bloatware which I deactivated with Titanium backup. You can uninstall it, but there is an update every Sunday and it will be back again. Also my patience for waiting on Lollipop had come to an end. Thats why I flashed (today!) the Ivan Stock Lollipop version which works like a charm, no forced closes, no nothing, just great. MIUI has some more features though and looks pretty beautiful if you asked me.
4. Spec wise it doesn't look to different to the Nexus 5 and maybe I should just wait - is there a newer version due out soon?
From what I heard so far, the specs of the new Mi won't be that much better. Also, it is said that the new one would be bigger than the 4, which I wouldn't like. If the new one had a SD-card slot, I personally would wait for that, but Xiaomi policy doesn't look like there will be one.
So all together, I would definitly go for a Mi4 with the Ivan Lollipop. It's simply awesome.
you're welcome!

I am currently with lg g2 and I don't know if I should buy the mi4c and sell the lg g2. The mi4c is currently on sale for 173$ and I can sell my g2 for about 160-170$. My g2 is 9 months old and I know that a lot of people get yellow screen spots after 6-12 months of use.
Is it a upgrade I should do? I really like the g2, but it is almost 3 years old and I would love the second sim for internet on the mi4c.
I also LOVE miui.

Geekbench:
Mi 4C: 1240 and 3228
LG G2: 943 and 2781
Battery life (gsmarena):
Mi 4C: Endurance rating 52h, Talk time 18:31h, Web browsing 9:32h, Video playback 10:47h
LG G2: Endurance rating 81h, Talk time 25:15h, Web browsing 11:42h, Video playback 9:28h
Mi 4C is definitely faster than LG G2 but LG G2 has better battery life. Althought you can fix the bad standby battery life of Mi 4C by using some mods. If you are not in hurry then maybe you can wait little bit till there is Snapdragon 650 devices out. Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 with SD650 is a beast! SD650 is better than SD808.
Geekbench:
Redmi Note 3 (SD650): 1535 and 3574
If you choose to wait you can test MIUI with your LG G2
I am not in a hurry at all. I know the pro. Might wait or might not change the phone
Thank you all for the help
I am still confused tho. I probably won't get the note, because it is too big for me. I don't want such big phone
"The mi4c is currently on sale for 173$"
Where?
Thanks Gluto

Hey !
I come from a LG G2, this phone was so great, I miss it. So now I have the MI4c and I can give you a little feedback :
Battery :
First I really was disappointed about the battery of the MI4c, it was so cool on the LG G2, I could use it for two days easily.
Now on the MI4c (with the CM 12.1) I can only use it for one day.
Camera
The camera was great on the LG G2, but it's better on the Mi4c. You can film in 4k and take beautifull pictures. With MIUI, you can take a picture in 0.1 second, it's so fast. I really prefer the camera of the MI4c.
Software and Performance
On my LG G2 I was on the Official CM 12.0 rom and it was really fast. Now on the MI4c it's the same, it's fluid and quite stable (with the MIUI rom).
I never tried to play a powerful game, but I tested the Cardboard VR and it was really good. And I really like the screen.
So of course I advise you the MI4c, for his quality and his price. But you will be disappointed about the battery life. If you can buy the 32gb version, buy it because 10 gb isn't enough (and 3gb of ram is better).

That is good like the g2
I get 4h sot. Ty guys for help. I ordered one and we will see if I like it
Cool, be careful about the boot loarder lock. Don't update your phone via the official Ota or you could not install a different rom on it.
I also came from LG G2 to Mi4C:
- first of all - there is (ATM) no sources for Mi4C, no global rom either. You have to use official/local MIUI, or some CM ports. It's not like with LG G2, where u have really big choice of roms. No one knows, if there will be ever sources.
- battery is better on LG G2, but still i can use Mi4C 2 days (now i'm on latest stable MIUI form xiaomi.eu; WiFi/LTE on all time; but SOT about 3h - i'm using phone mostly for texting and e-mails)
- LG G2 UI is, in my opinion, much better than MIUI (e.g. floating dialer, floating sms etc. etc - i love them all). Also MIUI is full of chinese stuff like "HEY THERE IS YOUR'S NEW WALLPAPER PLEASE INSTALL ME!!". Other things is, that u can block all unwanted stuff. MIUI needs to be more adapted, than LG's UI (but it is subcjective ofc).
- i can't see big difference in performance - Snapdragon 808 isn't MUCH better than 800 in daily use. Or just Mi4c's roms are not optimised enough. Also 808 is getting warm quite fast (e.g. 10 minutes on web and u can warm your hands in winter - quite useful ). You can get used to.
Conclusion:
- LG G2 was / is really great phone. The best, which i ever had. (BTW. i hadn't sold my G2, i gave it to my GF, cuz her phone was broken. It has more than 12 months, no problems with screen.)
- Mi4c is atm quite similar to LG G2. The worst thing is software. I'd really like to have access to custom roms. I think MIUI is killing great Mi4c's hardware (except photo app - that one is really cool!)
Also: have you considered Redmi 3? It's cheaper and similar to Mi4C. Weaker processor, but better battery. I'm wondering, if we can notice difference in daily use in performance between present snapdragons.
Regards
EDIT: Ops, i didn't noticed, that you have already ordered one. Well, have a happy use

Nice answer ! I pray that he will not receive a MI4C with the bootloader blocked. Because if you don't like Miui, you couldn't install another rom ><

If you're ordering from gearbest, I wouldn't worry about it. It will come with an unofficial version of MIUI. So be prepared to flash something else. Obviously watch out for the China dev ROMs as the newest version will lock your bootloader.

I canceled my order, because I saw a thread where the mi4c has touch screen issues in the edges. I also don't think it will be a good upgrade. SO I will wait maybe 6-7 months or more and get a new model of xiaomi

Personally I never had touch screen issues, it's not on all models, but it's a risk of course. Maybe the Mi5 will be better. Wait & See
It's hard to say, if it is an "issue". Area, which is responding to touch, gets smaller when you are using more than one finger. It is a confirmed thing, i got the same.
Other thing is, that sometimes keyboard isn't responding well on MIUI. I never had this problem on PAC or CM roms.

Says $215 for me.
Hi all.
This looks like a great community and I wanted to look for your advice.
I'm a longtime iPhone user looking for a way into Android.
I wanted a cost effective, smallish, good battery, dual sim of decent quality. The 4C looks like a good choice.
I want to know how difficult it would be to flash it to run native android the same way the Nexus phones do. I don't want all the bloatware, and since I'm buying online I want a clean install. (No malware)
Is there anything you like about MIUI that I should consider keeping it?
What results should I expect? Will everything work? No dead camera or weird glitches?
Can I do the flash on my Mac?
Any recommendations on where to source my tools?
Sorry for such a basic Q, but I haven't seen it asked in this detail.
I'd like to know what I'm getting into, but definitely want to get off iOS. It's been good but I don't want to carry two phones anymore.

The Xioami MI 4c seems like a good fit for you. My iPhone-centric friend said that my phone (the Mi4c) is the Android phone he hates the least
It is very easy to flash an AOSP based ROM (what you called "Native Android") such as CyanogenMod 13 on the Mi 4c. However, it might not be necessary as there are good debloated ROMs available based on MIUI and MIUI has a lot of nice unique features. There are instructions on how to do this on each thread, but message me if you have problems.
MIUI (and ROMs based on it) has far superior camera quality than anything else available for this phone. It also has a lot of manual features (manual focus, exposure, sharpening, saturation, focus tacking, numerous filters), though its long exposure is limited to 2 seconds and focus bracketing can't be manually adjusted. However, audio performance out of the auxiliary port is much better in AOSP based ROMs (MIUI has some audio processing that messes up the audio). Keep in mind that in general the phone feels more snappy on AOSP based ROMs, but in both cases there are very little to complain about.
My recommendation is that you try the MIUI ROM from this site (it is clean, debloated, and properly translated) for a week:
https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-9-8-9.34062/
then switch to CM13 (the nexus-fy version on this site) and decide for yourself which you like better.
I didn't find any bugs in these ROMs, but you'll have to read the respective threads to see if there are problems and if they have been fixed (and how to fix them if it isn't already). Luckily it's very easy to switch ROMs if you encounter problems.
All the tools necessary can be found on this site, but you might need to install "Flashify" from the play store in order to get a custom recovery on your phone if the conventional methods fail (ADB tools).
Things to keep in mind:
- The back cover is nice to touch but scratches easily, so either get a cover or keep in mind you can replace it if you have to.
- The front glass may be vulnerable (no official protected glass is disclaimed), get a tempered glass screen protector.
- The volume and power buttons are plastic
- Battery life is decent but not great (about a days usage, 5h screen on time)
- Camera is great in medium to good light, average in low light - feel free to ask samples
- Audio is great out of the port, and good from the speaker
- Display has stellar contrast, good colour, average brightness and is a bit difficult to read under direct sunlight
- Performance is generally good (there are some hiccups), but by far the best for the price
- The 16GB model is half the price of the 32GB model($110 vs $220 ), check Kimovil to get the best deal (I've used Geekbuying reliably through the years)
- Build quality is good otherwise (barring the above issues). I've used this phone brutally without a cover and it never gave me any problems.
- If size doesn't bother you too much, the Redmi Note 3 Pro is a great alternative. It costs $150, has better performance, awesome battery life, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and a micro-SD slots. Its cons are you lose out on the camera and audio quality, and the display's contrast isn't as good (1000:1 vs 1600:1). It also gets lots more love from Xda and already have an Android 7.0 Nougat ROM.
Probably the wrong time to buy mi4c as there are better budget phones such as the Lenovo Zuk Z2, great specs for the price. Rom development is another matter though
I got the Mi4s and I'm quite impressed of it. as Mi4s and mi4c is basically the same phone (without fingerprint, mi4s case is in higher quality) I'd recommend you the smiui rom, there you can choose what bloatware/mods you want/don't want and with viper4android the sound is very nice (like on a computer or even better). Also the camera is like in original miui (for me). I get about 1.5 days of normal usage (network always on, 2 sims, whatsapp, y music, telegram, browser, google books...) with smiui rom.
Hello
I have a 2.5 year old Nexus 5x and am seriously thinking about getting a new phone. I've narrowed it down to two choices.
The Oneplus 6 (8gb/128gb) that I could get for around 550€ with the student discount. The phone is everything I ever wished for, except for the camera, which I fear might be a downgrade from Nexus 5x and the not so good customer service.
The other one is Huawei p20 pro, which I could get for 570€ from my carrier. It is a great phone, but I really dislike the EMUI. I was not very impressed with the camera (I've seen some mixed reviews from people). Hardware is amazing, but I really dislike their postprocessing (the oversharpening and oversaturated colours) and I've read that gcam port is probably unlikely because of the Kirin processor. I also don't know how Huawei phones hold out long term (speed, lagging, software updates...).
I plan to keep the phone for 2-3 years. Things that are important to me are stock software and I also want a good camera (at least on par with my nexus 5x). I don't game and I mostly use the phone for calling, texting, listening to music, taking pictures and browsing the internet. It is important to me that the phone stays fast and doesn't lag throught it's lifetime and that it gets enough software updates.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Edit: Decided to go with the Oneplus 6. Thank you all for your answers!
I'm having both of them, and boy.. You can't imagine how much I hate EMUI. It's a nice phone, I rly like the Twilight color with the Black frame (switched the Backcover) but it's a pain to flash, stock EMUI looks like **** and overall I'm just enjoying my OP6 way more then I do the P20 Pro. The Camera ain't that bad, but compared to the P20 Pro it's quality is just poor. But that's a thing I can safely survive with.
Had a P10 Pro and EMUI is simply horrible. I put it up against my 5t and the 5t won. I also recall reading that they no longer allow you to get an unlock code for the bootloader.
I have both devices as well. The camera on the p20 pro is definitely knock out, but if you value software experience at all, you'll hate it. EMUI is a clunky mess. Updating the device is a pain, it's really heavy handed with closing background apps (Android messages for web won't run consistently, for example) and in general, it's ugly imo.
I carry the oneplus 6 each day because I enjoy using it. I have been switching sims each weekend when I value pictures of my kids, etc. Ultimately, it'll find it's way to eBay.

Try selling on Swappa. I've sold 6 phones though them in the last year and much better than eBay. I think I sold every one of my phones in less than a week.
Emui is not the end of the world. If you dislike it I would pick the OnePlus device. Btoh have pros and cons though. Huawei latest flagships don't have the slowdown like samsungs. So you can get the bells and whistles plus a consistent experience. Most importantly comparable battery with all the extras.
Like most Chinese oem's they all want to be apple/Samsung.
OnePlus is stockksh on a 1080p panel with the best hardware a available. So of course it's fast. Average device across the board. Biggest pro is extra hour of sot vs most phones(heavy user). Root and dev community.
Huawei will not be giving out bootloader codes after July(google actual date) but stock Android is available for a good majority of devices if interested.
op6 > p20 pro
my p20 pro got sluggish AF a month after usage.
op6 remains fast as day 1
I've seen videos of severe scrolling lag in basic apps like contacts on p20. It seems like EMUI has some issues it needs to work out first.
I just sold my p20 after using it for just a few hours LTE speeds were slower (55mpbs vs OP6 pulling 78mbps). As well as a bug utilizing the navbar on the device was buggy. When you enable navbar, it doesn't disable the fingerprint sensor from acting like a home button....so you have two home buttons side by side.
I would like to add that the costumer service is incredible (at least if you are a European citizen). I was never a fan of Samsung's/Huaweis aftersale support since it took me once 3 weeks to change the display of an SG S6.
Changing the display and the back cover of the OP3 costed me approximately 130€ with free DHL Express shipping. It took 3 working days until it was in GER again. I shipped it on Monday(early) and received the repaired smartphone on Wednesday evening (express courier).
For the software part: You will have 2 major updates and 36 months security updates (check your for reference: https://www.google.de/amp/s/www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-software-maintenance-schedule/amp/ )
Google port and custom roms is a big plus for the OP6. Camera is more then decent, it won't produce pictures like the Pixel 2, but the white balance / colour profile is pretty good ( maybe a bit to satured reds/orange - if you want to be very picky).
Overall i would go for the OP6 anytime.
I've owned a Huawei Mate 9 Pro, an Huawei Mate 10 and an Honor View 10. This must tell you that EMUI isn't as bad as all that. It isn't really.
The cameras and the camera software are outstanding. They even put my current Samsung S9+ to shame.
My concerns were :
Software updates - not too frequent, plus they like to 'authorise' a device for an update. Unlike OP where you can just use a VPN and get the update regardless of where you are, here you have to wait for authorisation or 'pay' and get the update from Funky Huawei.
I found on occasion, that despite some settings, things like some background apps were being killed or frozen. Stuff like Android Wear or the ThreeInTouch Wifi app. Some widgets wouldn't update. I don't think, going forward that Huawei are going to let you unlock bootloaders.
If you value a simpler OS that is updated and easy to root, unlock the bootloader and camera is secondary - get the OP.
If you adore having excellent photos, then get the P20 Pro - you won't regret it.
If the only thing concerning you about the OP6 is the camera (in comparison to 5X) - having both devices I can reassure you OP6 camera is miles better than Nexus 5X. And I wouldn't suggest buying Huawei to anyone. I think the oneplus offers the most nexus like software experience between all the OEM's right now
I can't speak about the P20 but I had a Mate 10 Pro and I sold it as I just didn't like EMUI at all. Compared to OOS it's just bad.
You'll better software support on the OnePlus 6. Huawei's software support track record isn't great. P20 Pro probably won't see Android P till Early 2019. OnePlus are offering Android P Betas right now.
From the comparisons I've seen online. The OnePlus 6 is faster, more RAM, camera is pretty even with both winning over the other in different situations.
The OS is great superior over EMUI and you will get update after update with OnePlus. The development community is far superior and of course insane battery with the fastest charging available with OnePlus dash charging.
I have the OnePlus 6 obviously, but faster phone, faster charging, stock like OS great camera and better support with updates and now OnePlus has come out and confirmed... 2 years OS updates and 3 YEARS security updates. It's a no brainier in my opinion.
Thank you all for your answers! I ordered the 1+6 today together with the nylon case. Really excited for it to come.
I'm thinking of getting myself a vivo nex now and i have some questions for you guys owning one. I have a galaxy note 8 now
How good is the screen compared to, say, a samsung?
Does it have google services?
Can i install a launcher without issues and have it resemble stock android?
Is the phone fluid?
would you recommend it?

Hi
I was in the same situation as you, coming from a long history of Note ownership.
The screen is good but not as good as the Note 8. It has good outdoor visibility.
Actually I have Nova laucher installed and I am happy about it
For the google services, you'll have to buy the global version of the phone, the one released in Hong Kong, India or Russia. Be carefull, there are some chinese vendors that sideload google play and say that it's the international version.
The phone is very fluid, I have never experienced any hiccups.
I would recommended it, for me the FLAT large screen is a bliss. You will get a much better battery life ~ 8 hours of SOT and the fast charging is FAST .
The Funtouch OS is awfull, IPhone-ish like but Nova takes care of it in a good proportion. You cannot root the phone.

For the one who wants to buy just one thing put in considerate is the weight of it.
I'm with tossero and everything he wrote. Screen is beautiful; and no curved edges is a plus as curved screens take away from screen view width. I don't understand how that gimmick has lasted this long. I don't use third party launchers as Funtouch does what I need.

I have the Indian model which works great in the states so here goes....
1. The screen is good, I would say as good as my old note 8 .
2. The model I have has Google services and the playstore preinstalled.
3. On the Indian model I have I can install Nova Launcher on it and it works great even though I don't mind the stock launcher on it. But if you're looking for this thing to resemble stock it's not gonna happen.
4. The device is very fluid with 8gb of RAM, I haven't had any slow down or lag whatsoever.
5. Yes I would recommend it, it's great device, like nothing I've ever owned in the Android space. I usually go through phones like water because I like to try out new device's but this one for sure is a keeper because of how unique it is.
Just to add few things: You won't see any difference between this 1080p screen and a higher resolution screens, SoT about 9h on wifi even more. Funtouch os isn't as bad as people say it is, when you get used to it. With 8gb of RAM and other specs it's future proofed for a few years. And as a high-end phone it has a headphone jack.
No custom Roms yet, and can't root it. The only bad thing.
9/10 Would recommend it.
Hi all,
I love battery life and a good camera experience in a phone. I have had both with my iPhone 11 Pro Max for the last two years. However, I can't deal with iOS anymore. I really would like to switch back to Android for many reasons.
What is the most stable / least buggy Android experience on a phone right now? It does not have to be stock Android if that comes with a bunch of bugs.
I ordered a Pixel 5A 10 days ago but Google has still not shipped it. Not sure what is going on.
I think you have the wrong idea about stability of Android in general.
Nevertheless, I use two phones atm, runing stock firmware and nova launcher pro
Xiaomi redmi note 9 pro, still holds up well, never had any serious issues. Bootloader unlocked, just rooted. Batteries on these are bests it can comfortably get me through the day. Camera is ok, still on the upper segment.
OnePlus 9R - a beast of a phone, but the battery is just not comparable to the note9 pro. Software is so-so, there are some bugs that can easily be fixed, for example some apps can keep the CPU awake and waste the battery, camera flash can heat up the phone and heat in general.
I think you should be fine with the pixel 5a. SD 765g runs much much cooler.
I have just been following the new Pixel 6 series for a while and wanted to upgrade but they seem to have so many bugs and issues. I have a Pixel 2XL and I loved it. Being in the US now, I was kind of forced to use an iPhone because of iMessage and I certainly enjoyed the battery life and the camera but I miss Android a lot. The iOS keyboard is just so bad in comparison for me and Apple does not really support third party keyboards very well. Still to this date and I am on iOS 16 dev channel. That is just one reason but certainly a big one for me.
