[Q] Album crash - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I launch Google Photos everything looks good. If I then switch (via the sidebar) to "Albums" it crashes each and every time.
This is on 5.0 and 5.1_r3
Any ideas how to figure this one out?

Most FCs/hangs on Google+ can be resolved by reseting the app's data. Look in Settings>Apps>Google+
Press on force close, then delete data und restart your device.

No luck. This crash has survived upgrades from 5->5.1r3->5.1r5... but I tried it anyway and still crashing.

Hmm, any custom kernel running?

At the moment I'm totally stock, not even rooted, on 5.1_r5. But in the past I had the same crash on Franco and Elemental.

Same issue for me. Clearing data and cache of google + will not solve it

crash
I have the same problem just updated to 5.1.1 (LMY48B) and its still crashing. did a factory reset flash factory image nothing helped

Tried a clean flash to a Carbon rim nightly, and now on the new factory image for 5.1.1... Seeing it in both of those too.
These are the times I'm jealous of the genius bar... At least someone would hear my complaint instead of just hitting submit bug. :/

Had similar with gmail. There was an update in play store for it. Updated and end of problem. If you've not got update in your play store maybe check out apk mirror and see if your on the latest release. Update if needed. See if it fixes your problem.
Good luck.

Been through several of the latest versions of G+ and Photos and still seeing this. My best guess is this is related to something specific in the album setup for people who are experiencing it. Either an odd character, or something else. Since google has gone through so many different versions of albums it wouldn't surprise me.
In fact, if I had to guess, I would suggest every one who is seeing this crash has at some point in the past used picasaweb albums, would I be correct?

fix
i think i fix the problem by removing old hangouts folders that i did not use anymore hope it help you guys to

Have you tried clearing data for market?
Please let us know if this fixes the issue.
I have tried that, it doesn't to anything.
Anyone else have some help for this guy?

Try this, Settings>Language & input>Choose English (United States)
Just did, tried to change from Canada to US. No luck. Very odd. I get FC after it tried to load up my apps.

Not sure what else you can try. Another thing I can suggest is clear data for Google services framework. Good luck
Also are you rooted? What version market are you on now?
Try this version if you're not already on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329262&highlight=market
Last thing to do is wipe data and start clean.
Tried, no cigar. That is the version that is giving me grief. Very odd. it FC and gives me the process com.android.vending stopped working.
Maybe the only thing left is to do a full factory reset. Very stupid.
No mine is not rooted. Thanks for the help
FIXED! It was a bad version of Documents to go... Deleted and it allowed me to get back into my apps in market. Interesting
That seems odd but at least you're fixed

I'm having the same problem now. Clearing data on market and android framework followed by restarting the tablet fixed the issue temporarily only for it to happen again after a short while.
Also noticed other performance related issues, force closes, lock ups, etc. Also resulting in the same error message as the market app issue - process com.android.vending has stopped working.
Only had these issues since the most recent update from Asus.
I'm having the same issue, I go into the market, everything is good till I try and go to my installed apps. Then f/c everytime. Very annoying. I do not have documents to go. Will have to try and hard reset it when I get home tonight. Son of a *****.
Just reading this thread.... the issue isn't isolated to the transformer.... my xoom same prob, and solution....

Thanks for the heads up, hard resetting didn't do a damn thing. Same errors. Google Music launch equals market crash? Maybe?
All right guys I need some input here....
I cleared market cash and data, reverted to older market, removed sd card, remounted sd card, rooted and installed prime then revolver, tried installing the newest market apk to no avail. Called google to see what was going on with my account, they said it was fine and it was the hardware. I put my fiance's account info on my tablet and it downloads famously. Factory restored and put my account back on and I get "download unsuccessful, please try again" every time on updates and app downloads.
Using my account I can go to market.android.com on a pc and push the application/update to my device and it works fine. This is a pain in the ass to do all of the time though. Can anyone help before I start using this thing for a coaster?
P.S. The market on my thunderbolt and HD 2 work fine.
**UPDATE**I just left it alone for a couple hours out of frustration and it works fine now. Must have been on google's side with the big market makeover.

It's the only solution to most play store errors.
This should solve it, unless you've modified something or you're using a modified version of play store.

Just recently I came across this error more frequently. This only happend to on 4.1.2. Either on Stock Rom or Custom. Happend on my Note 2,the Note 10.1 and on my gf's SGS-2. Until then, having different phones over the years, different Android Versions, I never saw this error. Since its multiple Phlnes, Tablets and Roms over the years, there is no common connection what this could be. Except the Playstore and Android 4.1.2.
Any thoughts on that?

It could be some versions of Google Play services I think.
Changing your lcd density is one major cause.
Sometimes changing Roms without wiping triggers it too.
Hard to point out a single culprit when there are so many possible triggers for play store errors.

I always wipe for different Roms. But out of curiosity, what has changing LCD density to do with that error? Really strikes me odd that something like that could have anything to do with such an error.
However, it seems likely that Google screwed something up with theit Market Services, at least with 4.1.2. Didnt notice that error in other Android Versions.

I'm not sure myself.
Changing density makes some apps unavailable to you on most versions of play store, but on some versions, the app is still available, but downloading it causes an error.

It recently happens to both our phones (NOTE 2, SGS-2) and the tablet (NOTE 10.1) a lot. All have 4.1.2 running, different ROM's though. And every time deleting the Play Store data, removing the Google account and going into CWM for clearing Cache and Dalvik Cache is not an acceptable solution.
Why is this coming so often recently ?
---------- Post added at 05:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:23 PM ----------
I found this as a possible solution, among several so called solutions which didn't work for most people. I tried that.

It works for me again, however I don't see the point that I would need to do that when my native language is a different one. If thats a solution indeed, then surely Google screwed something major up. They can't expect people to switch language to English (US) just for that.

you :good: man
that's work with me ...
I want to know why this error happens.
I've had it before and wiping dalvik and cache worked after deleting google account and then re-adding it
However, that was 2 weeks ago and I downloaded some stuff but it's back again and constantly wiping and re-adding is some super BS.
Is there something I can do or anyone can do to get to the bottom of this?
It would help if we knew what exactly error 491 means as well so we could track it down better and squash this.

Exactly, because the solution everyone says is only a temporary solution at best. And annoying to do everytime. But why does this Error come back all the time and why did I never witness this error over the years before. Only recently in months.

Yes, that works but its not the point. It'll come back, that error. And how often is doing that the point when there is no permanent fix ? I think, and I am really not good with stuff like that so I can't say anything I am really sure about, it is actually a problem with permissions. I am running the ARHD 8.0 on my Note 10.1 and the OMEGA v17 on my Note 2. Two different devices, two different Android Roms.
And yet, after (several times a week) get this Error, I go into CWM and "Fix Permissions". After reboot my Updates start working again on the Market. Until next time. I dont know if that has something to do with it, but it seems too big of a coincidence to just be random, if the "temporary" solution by "Fix Permissions" is making it work again.
I have no idea why that is but I don't seem to be the only one with that Problem as it seems. I dont know if what I assume has any value or is just an assumption but I think it might be worth thinking about it. However, why 2 different Roms on 2 different devices seem to have that problem in common I really dont know.

Thanks man, I will try that. I just did that Permission thing 10 minutes ago, so I won't see the difference right now. But if the Problem does not come back, I for sure owe you a beer.
Cheers

P.S: However, by doing that I disable Google Location services entirely. Isn't that kinda counter productive in case of other location dependent things going on ?
Worked for a while, now I get the same error again. Even though Location Services are still deactivated. This is one hell of a annoying error and persistent like hell.
If that continues I will go back to Stock Rom since I have never seen that on my gf's stock SGS-2 yet. Wonder if thats only custom Rom related. Really making me wanna buy and ..... no I wont say it.

I just rebooted and it all works normal now.
At first I thought wow! Another error but I just remembered I had tb clear the cache for all my apps and dalvic. So just rebooted. No deleting or fixing permissions

I don't have anything like that active on my device or the friends.
I also notice when I exit the Appstore, it says Appstore has closed as if it crashed.
The only other idea would be to delete the app data (Manage Apps -> Clear App Data)

I have a rooted Nook HD+ and this just started happening to me yesterday after I updated to 10.1.3-RC2-ovation.
I tried clearing the cache and data but it didn't work. I finally just deleted and reinstalled the Amazon App Store and now I don't have to log in every time but it does seem slow. I'll report back if it changes.
Hope this helps.

I tried clearing data previously and it didn't resolve, so I guess a full uninstall is required.

Hi all,
I am getting "rpc:s-3 error retrieving information from server" on every app when i try to download or update. I have tried clearing the data on play store, download manager, and google services and rebooting but it did not fix it. Has anyone found a fix for this?

No need to remove the Google account on this problem. It suffices to:
Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All
Google Play Store -> Clear data
Google Service Framework -> Clear data
Reboot

Same here. I've had this issue for over 2 months now. Google keeps saying it is a "known issue" for some. I have tried absolutely everything possible. Everything. I get it on my GS4 and my Nexus 7. I can not download anything or update anything. This is becoming very very irritating.

I've tried every suggestion out there (including those in this thread) for fixing the RPC:S-3 error and I haven't had any success. All apps install or update successfully except Flipboard, Gmail, Google Play Books and YouTube - they always get the RPC:S-3 error. The only other thing I can remotely think of is the fact that pertinent system apps aren't up to date or their versions aren't fully compatible with each other: Google Play Store 4.4.21, Google Play services 4.0.34 (924341-36) and Google Services Framework 4.3-757479.
Could that be the culprit? If so, how do I fix it? If not, any other ideas?
P.S. - Galaxy S III with Android 4.3
SOLVED!!! Finally! Not sure what the fix was exactly (since I tinkered with just everything in this session) but I think it was removing ALL Google accounts (I had 7 total) and possibly combined with toggling Sync and the clear cache & data trick. Here's everything I did:
Updated Google Play services to 4.1.32 (978161-36)
Updated Play Store to 4.4.22
Turned off Sync
Removed all 7 Google accounts
Cleared cache AND data for Google Play services, Google Play Store and Google Services Framework (I know the Google engineer said not to, but F it!)
Restarted the phone
Cleared cache AND data again for the aforementioned apps/services (I'm paranoid/anal)
Restarted the phone again
Turned Sync back on
Re-added just ONE Google account (my primary one)
Cleared cache and data again (told ya!)
Restarted the phone again
All the apps that were giving me the RPC:S-3 error have successfully updated/installed automatically. What a F'ing experience!
Well, 'til the next RPC:S-3 (or RPC:S-5:AEC-0) fiasco...
This is what i did and it fixed the issue.
Remove google account (all of them)
Un-install updates and cache what not
re-boot device.
Re add the account and don't update or anything yet.
Let your device sit for about 5 mins.
Download a random app from app store( don't update any other app yet)
after it's done downloading different app now you can update your apps
This method worked for me. Try it

apps reverting back to previous versions randomly.

most specifically my Facebook app. whenever I force quit it or reboot the phone, my Facebook app reverts back to an old version. it says its the most up to date version when I check the version # and there's no updates available. I am rooted and have turned auto update off on the app within play store. this is really obnoxious having to uninstall and then reinstall the app multiple times a day bc the old version is AWFUL. any help would be appreciated GREATLY!

most specifically my Facebook app. whenever I force quit it or reboot the phone, my Facebook app reverts back to an old version. it says its the most up to date version when I check the version # and there's no updates available. What ROM are you running and what version of Google play store do you have? Haven't noticed this issue.

stock ROM and 4.5.10. its actually not just or force quits and reboots but that generates the problem 100% of the time. I noticed sometimes when I go to my Facebook app it'll just be an old version. although it has the same and most up to date version when I check the version #. when I uninstall and then install again its back to the newest version. reverts randomly a few hours later.

Is it only the Facebook app doing this? I'd try wiping data/cache for app, going to recovery, backup, wipe data/cache, reboot and try to see if problem persists. If it does, something between the Facebook app and google play is not working correct.
heres screenshot of app before and after a soft reboot.

it is the only app doing it that ive noticed but since im fairly new to android, its hard for me to tell older versions from new ones, this one is just SO obvious and frankly that old version is just awful.
i wiped data/cache from the app, went into recovery and wiped cache partition but didnt wipe the data, i assume that completely wipes the phone? sorry like i said i have only had this phone for 2 weeks from long time iphone user minus a short stint with a moto droid in 2009.

It's perfectly fine. Yes, don't wipe the data since that will wipe everything. But, since this did not clear up the issue, it sounds like a Facebook problem. I've heard many people complain about layaway build. Best thing I could say to do is try uninstall, reboot phone, and try reinstall. If that doesn't work, I'd try to find last version Facebook apk file (or current Facebook version apk file) NOT from play store, install, and wait for Facebook to fix the app from this problem. Still seeing possible other way to fix. By installing apk not from play store would allow phone to hopefully not reset to old version since play store doesn't realize you have Facebook anymore (since not from play store). A quick work around until fixed.
If this is facebook only, it might very well be a Facebook problem. Especially when you say that it changes even though the version of the apk stays the same.
Facebook has been testing the new layout by having both the new and the old one in the same apk, then they enable or disable it server side by accounts in order to try different versions of the new layout for different people and see the different responses in usage and so on. This sounds like a bug with that mechanism inside the Facebook app, and is not fixable as such. I for one have yet to see the new layout on my device.
You could try clearing the data for the facebook app to see if that helps.

Are you sure you aren't registered to facebook beta testing?
99.9% sure as I've never opted into a beta test for android.
