Many random NO SERVICE with StraighTalk lately - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says - we (three N5 in the household, two in one part of MA, another 90 miles away) get NO SERVICE message on the top left screen and service bar is empty.
It started just prior to 5.1 OTA upgrade. It can come at any time, I noticed often when I take it out of my pocket, or even when it lies quietly on the desk - out of the blue it has no service.
Anyone else experience this? Any idea what's going on?

I've been having the same issue. However mine started after the 5.1 update. I have a completely stock n5 on straight talk. I haven't had any issues since yesterday morning when I deleted two other apn's that were not being used. I'm not sure if that fixed it for good yet. But you may want to try that.

Thanks, I'll try that. Not sure why would it affect it though unless they changed something in their APN settings. Worked fine up until about 3 weeks ago.

I'm not sure why deleting the other apns would work either, but I haven't had any trouble since I did. Doesn't make sense to me. My wife has an lg g3 and I had to do the same to get data and picture messaging to work on her phone. That's what gave me the idea to do it on my n5

Would you mind post screen shots of the APN you are using with ST? Just to make sure I have the correct setup?

Ive been using the apn settings from thr the straight talk data settings app from the play store. Im on 5.1 stock and it works just fine.

Tried the App but it didn't work properly, it missed some details. I entered it manually and deleted the other APN. Not sure why inactive APNs could cause this.

MMS selectively working on Nexus 5

So I think they weren't working at all because my IMEI wasn't updated with AT&T when I got my replacement phone. Got that addressed.
Since then, I was able to receive old MMS, but even new ones sometimes get hung up on trying to retrieve them. exiting app and going back in doesn't fix it.
Starting the phone up again does though..
Made sure APN settings are good to go, unchecked 'mobile data' in sms settings and re-enabled within Hangouts.
I'm on stock rooted 4.4 (and franco kernel)
any idea whats going on? It seems like other people are having this problem too but I don't understand it. Thanks.
I am seeing the same issues here.. Stock play store purchased and rooted on Sprint, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, sometimes even SMS sits forever and wont send or receive until I restart the phone, trying to find someone with a Sprint purchased N5 to compare APNs with
Its almost 2014, you would think someone would be able to straighten out the massive amount of MMS issues with android phones :/ It should "just work" to the customer
I have a feeling it has something to do with Hangouts app itself..
I have issues with hangouts indefinitely, also with textra and handcent. Like OP said,sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

That's interesting you're also experiencing it with other apps.
I haven't tried anything but Hangouts.
Maybe it's a Kit Kat issue? no clue.
Considering you have At&t and I have sprint, im guessing ruling out the carrier is OK.

This is true.
Running on metro pcs and my mms is perfect with hang out and sliding messaging pro. Metro runs gsm off T-Mobile towers.

Interesting, i wonder what the root of the issue is since it's selectively working.
Can't be hardware, because it selectively works whereas my data and nothing else has been on the fritz, and it seems like whenever I receive errors rebooting and going back into the app it loads the ones it was hung up on. Seems like it downloads it, but just shows an error instead of displaying the MMS.

Hopefully it just resolves itself eventually, either the network, or a software hiccup, or whatever it is.
Because this Nexus 5 I have right now is a perfect "copy" or whatever you want to call it, a perfect build.

It makes sense that that would be the culprit too because it requires root access, and permissions don't seem to kick in until slightly after the phone boots up initially which would coincide with mms received and sent just for those first few moments.

In my case MMS started working after disabling Adblock in the app itself. Then I went ahead an uninstalled. Thanks for the head up!

Same here but with hancent and hangouts

SMS not sending, but able to receive. MMS + Data Working.

Hello Internet, I just thought I'd chime in on the sms issue many seem to be having.
For me it started in the morning on the 21st. The day before everything was peachy. That morning I woke up and sent my normal texts that I usually do. The first text sent fine like usual, but anything after would fail to send. One quick-fix I found was to toggle airplane mode before sending a message, which would allow me to send another text or two before failing. The most interesting thing about this issue is that my brother, who is on cm 10.2 started having the issue at the exact same time and we aren't even running the same versions of android.
So I called verizon today and after about a half our I was able to get some information. I told the guy that I had tried rebooting, clearing cache, factory reseting, updating my SMSC number, etc. He said it's probably an issue in their end, which makes sense due to the timing of the issue occurring. He said he would do some behind the scenes stuff and call me back on Monday. I guess we'll see if the issue gets resolved. Keep me posted if you find a solution.

Not sure if I'm doing this right usually I use the app but since I can only text on touch wiz based Roms xda app keeps crashing. Anyway I have this issue too mine seems to have started on 2-20 but same thing reboot or toggle airplane mode and I can send one that's it till next reboot. Was running carbon kit Kat. Hopefully Odin tomorrow will fix it touch wiz sucks!

I talked to Verizon again yesterday night, my support ticket is still open, meaning they're looking into the possibility of it being an issue on their end, so nothing new. I'm convinced it's something with them, because of the timing. I'll keep you posted.

Do they know you are running a form of CM? Or are you just saying your texts aren't working?

Are you on a version of CM? I was on mastamoon's 10.2 and moved to his CM11 and still have the problem. The only other fix I have heard/seen is that you can turn your mobile network to just CDMA and the problem goes away. (Its slow, but it works).
You are from Hershey Pa. I am in the Wilkes/Barre Scranton area. Anyone else experiencing this problem and in this area?
Do you have voice+ or google voice in your app drawer? I've seen some people who have had it in their app drawer who have been able to open that and select disable which remedies the problem. Hopefully Verizon gets back to you.

Yes, I'm from Hershey PA, my brother and I both have GS3s, but he's running 10.2 RC2 and I'm on the latest D2 nightly. The issue started in morning on the 20th. From what I can tell, it's only Verizon customers in our area that have been affected, my buddy on AT&T with a CM Nightly hasn't had any trouble. I tried disabling Voice+ but it didn't help anything. As of this point, my ticket is still open, so no new news yet. I'll keep you posted.

I haven't told them I'm running a custom rom and I won't unless I actually need to. They don't seem to take kindly to people who like to get the most out of their phones.

This is actually quite fascinating. All of those who seem to be having this issue are in Central Pennsylvania, started having the issue around the 20th, and are running a version of Cyanogenmod. I'll be sure to bring that up in my next chat with Verizon. Stay posted.

I've been having the same problem since ~20th as well. In glad I found this thread as I couldn't find much else when searching. I've temporarily switched to a TW ROM and it worked fine but any aosp seems affected. I even got Verizon to give me a sim but it didn't help.
My cell number starts 570-57*-**** (Scranton area number ) though I now live in Hershey pa.
This is where I wish I knew someone who worked at vzw and was a reasonable person.

I am just outside Philly, I started having this issue on the 20th as well, occurred on both paranoid android beta 4 from notta and slim kat stable 3.0. Seems to be intermittent for me as there is times where it works freely and times I need to toggle airplane mode for every text
Edit: my number is from northeast pa (Hazleton Area). I'm wondering if it is an area code issue or something because I know people with s3s down by philly who don't have this issue with Verizon.

Been having the same issue. I live in mountaintop so maybe you're right
Central PA 570 here as well. Both my mom and I's phones are experiencing the same. What baffles me is that it happened to be people who had already flashed the ROM prior to the 20th, which means it isn't an AOSP specific SIM activation issue, because that happens on first boot. Touchwiz works fine, although I can't stand it. Whatever it is, I desperately hope it's fixed soon.

T-Mobile Text Messages Not Working

Bought the Z3 on 11/11/14, was working fin until the 13. Text messages will say "sending" and I will not be able to receive any messages. Was on the phone with T-Mobile tech support for over 2 hours troubleshooting, no luck. Went back to the store, got a new sim card, and exchanged for a new phone, working fine until the next day (today).
This is my second z3, used multiple sim cards, did factory reset, nothing works text messages still will not receive or send. Salesman told me I can switch phones to anything else. What should I do?
Extremely disappointed in Sony. I believe this is a phone error as I had a Galaxy S3 with tmobile since 2012 with no issues.
I haven't had any problems with mine from T-Mobile. Does it work on WiFi calling? I really don't think it's the phone..

right, and the tech support rep said no issues have been reported with sony. I don't understand what the problem is then? I created a ticket with t-mobile engineering, hopefully that resolves the problem. If not, I'm jumping back to the S3

phone calls and data work fine. just text/picture messaged are extremely delayed, or non functional.
could any of my downloaded apps be corrupting the sms service?
I didn't even get a chance to root yet...

I'm not sure how an app could corrupt anything... Especially without root.
Do you still have the S3? Pop your sim in and try and text.

can't do that....z3 has nano sim, s3 has micro sim. I actually do not have a phone with nano sim besides the z3

yes, but the problem continued on hangouts. I was just on the phone with tmobile tech, and she sent me a picture message, and it took over 30 minutes to receive. I sent a message to myself at 9am cst, and still haven't received.
It happens to me every once and a while, it happen yesterday but all I do is a soft reset.. Then it's sends the text..
If I had to guess it might be a fluke thing or maybe something to do with having stamina mode on but since I get incredible battery ? results it worth the hassle ..
Also I have done a factory reset and use the new Sim that came with the phone ..But it still happens ,I know it does because I get the did not send Error message ..
But for me personally it happens like maybe once or twice a week ..
Hey no phone is perfect but this Phone is so close to it with,whatever shortcomings it might have..

I never get the "send error" message, and I do not have stamina mode on. This is an amazing phone, no doubt about it, but I may be experiencing a bad batch or something.
This is not an intermittent issue, it is constant and never ending. My 2 Z3's have been far from perfect, and cannot handle the simple task of sending sms. Also the phone has rebooted by itself a couple times already. Sadly, I'll have to return it or wait for the tmobile engineering decision.
What apps do you have installed? My phone has rebooted/froze/force closed at all.

about 40 random ones from the store. actually, I tried to take a picture from the messaging app and it froze. I think the messaging failure is corrupting other processes on the phone, it gets really hot

If it's getting hot there must be an app stuck trying to do something, check and see what app(s) are using a lot of the battery, GSam works pretty well. Then uninstall/disable it

I've got the same issue, every so often my phone fails to send a text. It happens at least twice a day. First I thought it was Hangouts, so I disabled the SMS setting on it, and used the stock app, but it's doing the same thing. Sometimes I will retry three or four times with no success. I'm usually able to resend after waiting a few minutes.
I'm not on wifi, I don't use wifi calling. I have great signal strength, and mobile data is working, so I'm not sure why my messages won't send...
I'd also like to note, I came from a Nexus 4, NEVER had an issue with texts not going through... so I really don't think it's T-Mobile...

Yes same exact problem. It must be something weird on the phone that we need to configure. Maybe tmobile can adjust on their end. Yourr the only one in the USA to agree with me and this problem with the z3.

No clue, I've never dealt with T-Mobile support. Although my general consensus with carrier stores, is that the employee's are generally brain dead and just trying to get their commission on device/plan sales. (Does not apply to all of them) Most just have no idea what they are selling.
However, you definitely have an app doing something in the background. The only time my phone gets hot is while charging and using it, or doing something that stresses the processor. (4K Video/Games...etc.)

I'll keep that in mind. Can't download apps now! Lol! Just tried to download the gsam app via network and via wifi and it just stays stuck. I'm done, there's no way this phone will last 2 years like the s3

No Voicemail Notifications...?

So I just switched back to my M8 from my M9. Updated it to MM with the stock firmware and the Stock rooted VZW MM Rom. I thought everything was just going fine but realized today that I haven't been getting any voicemail notifications. If my phone is in airplane mode, and turn it back on and someone leaves a VM, no notification. If I decline a call and they leave a VM.. no notification. Never seen this before and kind of frustrating.

The m9 included vvm basic. Download the Verizon vvm app and you should have your voicemail back.
I deleted your other posts about this same issue in other threads. Please only post the same problem once.

Except this is the M8, went back to my old M8 FROM the 9. I've never had or used VVM. In my life and everything has always worked perfectly fine on both the 8 and 9.
I did get it fixed somehow, it's definitely on VZW's side. Just logged in to my account, reset the voicemail option. Call in to your VM and set it up again and everything seems to be working fine.
I've tried looking for VVM basic but it's never an option and always wants me to pay the $3 / month or whatever it costs. Never seen a free "VVM" basic.

You didn't read my post correctly. The m9 added that basic vvm option to your account with advanced calling. Don't believe me?

Ahhhhhh.... I see what you're saying now... Gotcha. So when I switched back to the M8, the basic VVM was still active on my account and I had to go in and switch it back to the normal VM for it to work properly on the M8. Makes sense and of course I would never doubt you Dottat... That would be foolish

I used to have a screen shot of what all got added with advanced calling on the m9. I went looking for it but never found it. It's not unique to the m9 either. When my employees all got upgraded to iPhone 6 and subsequently had volte enabled it completely wiped and reset their voicemail. They didn't realize for weeks their voicemail was no longer setup. Also screws up google voice voicemail users too.

MMS Not receiving unless using HTC message app

So for the past week I have been using gboard and android messages to be able to send gifs, bitmoji, etc. All of a sudden for no reason I can't receive any MMS at all using any other message app than HTC messages. Has anyone else seen this? I have tried textra, verizon message+, etc. Once I uninstall the other apps i can get the messages again, but only with the HTC app.

I have fixed the 7.0 problem in the past and did the whole new Sim activated on a newer vzw phone and had HD voice ect added and restarted my u11 with factor my reset. Fixed my mms issue for 6months until recently. Textra and any other app that isn't htc, fails to recieve mms. I have another u11 on 7.0 and it's not being used (long story) and put my sim in it and tested. Still no mms.
I did change my plan around the time the problem has started to occur again. Today I'm takin both u11s in and seeing if I can get mms to work by activating a new Sim. I'm frustrated cause I dont like htc sms app.
Anyone else having problems? Maybe the Sim card is just a bandaid?

Do you have a stock rom back up ? If so back up your current rom and data then restore the stock rom back up then boot it and let it update apps then reboot to recovery and save your updated stock rom to a new back up then restore your back up that you were originally using and it should text fine. I said to update apps and do another stock back up so you have a new updated back up for future fixes. I have had to do this a couple times but its usually after flashing things like I did through magisk I did the viper4android and it broke texting and data but doing this always seems to be a fix for me and others. Its not permanent fix but it will get your texts and data working again until you flash something again.

My u11 is a virgin. I haven't done mods to it. As for all the backups, I really just got lost lol Idk how create a new back up

Try doing a factory reset if that does not work run the newest stock RUU.

OK, I'll give that a whirl tomorrow... Hopefully that'll work. I've been using message+ as of late and I hate it. Htc is worse lol I miss textra much

That is kind of odd as usually people on stock rom do not have these problems its usually just the people unlocked and on custom roms and flash any mod and the problem rears its ugly head but doing the fix I listed is usually a fix or RUU worse case and your fixed.

Ya, it happened randomly. I haven't done any mods to this Phone cause it works fine for me the way it is. It'll it was a vzw branded phone then I would put a custom ROM... Hate bloatware. If anything, I might tinker to get bands 2&4...Maybe.
But I'll try a factory reset tomorrow after work... So assuming I should remove sim before hand?

If you remember to yeah I would as the one guy listed to but who knows if it works it works. I try to remember to because if you can help doing that its worth a try.

Ya I'll pull it just to be safe. And ya I haven't had problems with band 13...everu now and again I'll lose signal randomly bit it picks up after a few minutes. Internet is real sluggish tho in a big crowd... More then my m8 tho. Posting a SC video won't take untill congestion goes down. Dk if that's normal but it's livable

I did a factory reset... It didn't work. Everything is up to date, running O, latest patch, and texta. Both message+ messages wrk. Guess RUU Is next? Dk wth happend but I miss textra

Try allowing access to background data and turn off power saving.
I checked to see if what you suggested was in those settings.... They are and yet I still am unable to 3rd party apps. Even message+ gets pics if I'm using wifi. It's really annoying

I actually have the same problem with my HTC U11 that's on Verizon services. I posted a new thread about before I seen this one. My problems started a week or so ago. I was using Android Messages at the time this stopped working. I have put my SIM card in 3 other phones with the same result. I then put my wife's SIM card in my HTC and was able to receive picture messages on the HTC using her number. So that said to me it's not a phone issue but my SIM card. I got a new one today and activated it using my G5. I was able to get picture messages on the G5 put the new card in my HTC and it was a no go. It's weird that her card would receive mms messages on my phone but my old card or new one won't. And now that I've put the new one in my HTC I can no longer get picture messages on my G5. I also noticed that on the G5 settings i was no longer able to turn on video calling. It said that service was not turned on and needed to be enabled on my plan. My wife still uses her G5 and it will let her turn on video calling. It's almost as if this problem is attached to my phone number and something fishy is going on with Verizon. Seems weird my new card worked in my G5 then lost that ability after putting my card in the HTC.

I tried that and it didn't work for me. Only the stock app works for MMS.
Ya, only stock app works properly. Message+ works right only on wifi. Surprised that there's not more ppl commenting on this or found a fix
