Earphone/Headphone Problem (not recognizing)!!!! - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is a strange problem i am facing
it started unexpectedly
the problem over here is that my phone is not able to recognize between earphones and speaker after connecting earphones
dont know whats the problem over here is
the earphones would work at first and then all of a sudden it stops to recognize it
this happened with two of my earphones (no earphone problem cause they work with other phones
is anybody else experiencing this problems?
after trying to figure out what is happening i opened up audio fx to see if its creating problems and this is what i saw
as u can see in the video above the phone is not connected to any earpiece
at 0.02 i connect the earphones and for just a second it recognizes the earphone and then keeps switching between headset and speaker mode
then the video contains various attempts of connecting earphones and getting the same result
Heres a logcat https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B--cxicb-CQGS2J1blVmUnVkNGM&authuser=0
(sorry cannot paste to pastebin ,since it exceeds max size limit)
Device:-XT1033
ROM:-AICP (happened with diff roms in the past too)
kernel:-hurtsky(again happened with another diff kernel in the past)

hmmm, ok,
Are they "simple" earphones ==> ones that doesn't have any call/music/volume triggers
Did you tried with the AUX-IN of a HiFi installation (with a jack-audio cable plugged to the AUX-IN of it)
Did you tried Apple vs non-apple earphones (the ground and microphones rings on the jack are usually reversed)
What i know about jack port is only that impedance is important for phones : that's the way the earphones are detected and how the triggers work when there are some.
At first read i have no idea about your problem, but it might be a dirty port OR an issue with the controller
You may read the following, and try to play with it:

1>No they are not simple earphones
2>no never tried using AUX-IN on moto g
3>No,no apple earphones were connected to it
the earphones that i used here was from samsung and karbonn(a local brand, that is)
these two earphones used to work with my phone but all of a sudden it stopped!!
inserting them sometimes gives a repeated sound of distortion(cant explain that ....but theres some noise)

Im having the same problem! It's definitely a phone issue... Thing is, I used it with my hudl brand aux cable and that works just fine with the phone but my headphones won't? (I don't know if this inf helps or hinders but I figured it might be important)

So apparently it works better with two-ring headphones, ones that don't have any play/pause buttons or microphones built in? Turns out my headphones have 3 rings on the jack. So apparently, i just have to buy a whole new pair of headphones that only have 2 rings but I don't see why I should spend anymore money just because Motorola ****ed up?

[Q] Issue with headphone functionality

I've searched everywhere for some answers to this and haven't had any luck.
I received my Nexus S 4G on Monday and have generally enjoyed the phone aside from the signal issues that have been addressed at Sprint's forums. I've recently discovered an issue with my headphone jack, though. Sound will only come out of my headphones when I am using the music player or music-related apps (Pandora for streaming). However, when I play videos from YouTube or the recently released Netflix app the sound is routed to my phone's speakers instead of the headphones that are plugged into the phone.
I've tried 2 different headphones and I can confirm both work when connected to my iPod and PC so I know it's not the headphones.
Any possible solutions? Should I get the phone replaced?
I had this problem with a specific pair of headphones. solution: make sure the headphones are in all the way. Seriously for some reason that pair have a second stage of "in" so they were not actually plugged in when i thought they were.

Seriously? I should've known I was doing something wrong. Both sets I tried have that same thing with the second stage of "in" or whatever it is. Anyway, that totally did the trick. Thank you so much!

[Q] Question on microphine/audio output

I have been researching online about using car aux-in cable for making phone calls.
I heard that some phones work and some do not. In those cases, when it doesn't work, it means that the person in the phone cannot hear what you say, because by default the mic is muted when something is plugged in to the jack.
With HTC Sensation, does this happen? Is the phone mic muted when a headset/aux cable is plugged in to the phone? If yes, is there any workaround? What is the general solution to make phone calls via aux cable?
I heard that some people might use the griffin cable with mic, but since my aux port is located where the shifter is, I am not sure how the quality would be. Any idea?
Thanks

well, i hope this answers ur question
i have made calls/received calls via aux (when im listening to music in da car n get a phone call i dont uplug it, just answer)
i talk thru the mic normally and i hear the other person from tha car speakers.
so i guess the mic is not muted
From previous experience - though not with Sensation, as I'm all blue-tooth now, the following was true
If you plug in a normal 3.5mm TRS jack (stereo headphone / line-in / etc) the phone detects it as headphones and not headset, so the device realised there was no "in-line" mic, and used the phone's microphone itself.
A better option (which I did) was to fashion my own lead - using another HTC headset, but removing the two earphones, and soldering the cables to an in-line socket. This worked well, because I had a microphone clipped to me, with remote control for music (don't want to touch the phone when driving now, do we!!) and the stereo audio feed back to the car speakers. Cost me about £3 in total, including the second headset.
I would imagine this to be the same for the Sensation too, as all these sockets have various detection mechanisms, to make the right things happen, depending on what you connect.
Good luck, and safe driving!

Why some headphones don't work with some phones?

Hello.
I'm trying to figure out and possible find a solution for why some headphones don't work with some phones?
For example a very well known brand Scullcandy. Their line of Skullcandy FIX Bud headphones work fine with Galaxy S2, but don't work with Galaxy S3, they also don't work with LG Nitro HD.
On GS3 they work for media playback, but when trying dial out or answer a call, the phone totally disconnects the headphones, the icon that shows when headphones are plugged in is no longer showed and at that point one has to physically re-plug the headphones in order to use them for media playback.
It does sound like phone's software issue, I sure hope so and there is a way fix it...
Another phone I had bad experience was LG Nitro HD. Even though the phone is totally waste of money it don't accept any iphone type headphones, they might work for playback, but mic or buttons don't work.
So what could possibly causing this issues?
I've tried post on phone related sections, but got no answers...
I also tried contact Samsung support regarding this issue, but they simply blew me off with "we don't provide support for 3nd hardware". Now I'm waiting for an answer from Skullcandy support.
Any ideas?
Thank you.
Probably the 3-pin layout of your phone. some are really weird in the way they work
x10man
There might be a couple reasons. The first is the connector. Some headsets use a three pole connector while others use a four pole connector. The other issue will likely be he pin out. The headphone jack might be a standard mechanical interface but not electrically. Both are hard problems but an adapter cable might help you.
All headphones connectors in question are 4 pin type, without using micrometer they look identical. Since all these headphones works fine in mp3 players, where only 3 pin connectors used, means the 3 out of 4 pins are in proper places and connected properly inside the wire.
So, without taking headphones apart it seems physically there is nothing different between them.
In addition, if there would be something physically wrong, it would not explain, why SGS3 sense when Skullcandy headphones connected, it shows headphones icon, but when a phone call initialized it "forgets" about it.
It sure seem to me like software related..

[Q] Bose QC15 noise canceling headphones not working with Moto G

Hi all, I got a Moto G 8gb from Phones4U, and my Bose QC15 noise canceling headphones made a nasty clicking noise every time they were plugged in. The clicking would happen no matter if something was playing or not. Nothing would play out of either channel, and the software would randomly pause whenever they were plugged in, as if they were being unplugged. Various cheap earbuds worked, but not my QC15s. I factory reset it three times, and obviously tried the headphones on about a half dozen devices, including a Galaxy IV, iPhone 5C, Nexus 5, my laptop, my desktop, and an old iPod Classic -- all worked perfectly.
I took it to Phones4U and exchanged it for another model, which had the exact same problem. We tried a 16gb version and it had the exact same problem too. Then we tried it with various other phones and my QC15s worked, so they told me that my headphones must obviously not be compatible with the Moto G line. Then they said I wasn't even eligible for a refund because it was about compatibility, not a defect. I raised hell and finally got them to refund it, but now I don't know what to do. Anybody else have noise canceling headphones, especially the QC15s, that they have successfully or unsuccessfully used?

You were probably a bit hasty returning the phone just for this, but you're right there's something screwy about the Moto G's handling of wired earphones that are more complex than basic stereo. I can't get any 3-button remote headset to work with it properly, for example. No doubt Motorola will deal with this in future updates ... unless they only want us to buy the Sol Republic Jax earphones, which would not be good ...
I'm also surprised you got a refund, as Motorola doesnt claim compatability with your headset. Also surprised that Phones4U now have 16GB in stock

Just for the record I have a 16gb Colors edition from Brazil and I use a Sennheiser bluetooth headphone with my Moto G (PX 210 BT) and it works beautifully!
I can use all its buttons with no problem: play/pause, volume up and down and skip track forward/backward.
One interesting thing I noticed was: the headphone did not perform very well with Google Play Music. Both sound quality (it would constantly click during playback) and the buttons (play/pause button would only work with screen on) were not up to standard.
However when I installed my player of preference, PlayerPro, and messed a little bit in the settings of the app with audio priority and with the keyguard settings both audio quality and buttons were working great!

Yes, bluetooth is another matter of course. But I guess he has a reason to be sore when those wired Bose QC15 headphones cost twice as much as the phone itself
Workaround to make them work
I have the same problem connecting my QC15 with moto G. With some experimenting I somehow made them work and they are perfectly fine now. Follow the below steps to make them work with your phone.
1. Disconnect the headphones to the phone and start music on any player(Google play or your choice) on the phone.
2. Once the song starts playing insert the headphones into the jack. Imp Note: remove the headset part from the wire.you should only insert the wire without having the headset piece.
3. Now the song will continue to play. Now switch on the headphone and insert the wire into the headphone. It should work now.
I know this shouldn't be the actual scenario, but engineers at Motorola have made up some mess which cannot be cleaned up now with respects to hardware. The phone is little wierd on headphones port. Its not working with aux cables in my car too
I have SMS street by 50 cent and every thing works fine. skip/pause and previous track
Sent from my XT1032 using xda app-developers app
Same problem
I've experienced the same problem with Bose QC15 and the Moto G. Motorola support were rude and unhelpful, first assuming that the QC15 were bluetooth and telling me flat out that it was not a fault of their hardware. Eventually I got a ticket raised so we'll see what happens. Not holding my breath.
bonthukarthik, your fix works - thank you for sharing - although I must add that this step has to be repeated whenever playback is stopped or paused (including when Spotify plays an advertisement). If I find anything out from Motorola, I will share it here.
I just got some qc15's and they only worked out of the left ear with the moto x. I used the work around above and they now work. weird. play/pause button now works but the volume does not on the inline headphone controls.
What kind of connector this headset/headphone has?
CTIA or OMTP?
I have skullcandy 2xl single button headphones and it doesn't work
when i attach the headphones the music pauses
Confirmed
I can confirm this issue with Moto X and also the workaround. I have contacted Motorola but so far no luck in getting through to someone who can open an issue internally
Skullcandy not working
Have the same problem
I have the skull candy inkd 2
It only works when its 3/4 inside but when I push it all the way in a clicking noise plays

Hi.
I just got a moto g, I have a bose qc3 and the same problem.
It seemed tome that it seemed to me that it was connection or impedance related... so I tried a few things.
The best way I found to make it work fast is plugging it in using the airplane jack adapter. It works perfectly fine but the remote won't work.
I guessed that it means that it's remote/impedance related.
Like it was said before, unplugging the jack on your headset, playing something on the phone and plugging it it afterwards works too... But I really don't know why !
Any clues, anyone (with advances electronic skills)?
With my former android phones I had troubles using the answer/play remote on some headphones/buds, but never like that. It was allways clear to me that iphone and android headset/buds remotes work in a different way, and sometimes even differently depending on your android model or brand...
My guess is that using a cable without a remote will work... but it's be nicer to have a working remote.

I found something, just a clue, I don't mean it'll work for sure.

Alright here are some more details / partial solutions :
- If you plug your qc using the jack with the remote/mic and the airplane adpter, the sound sill work, but you'll lose the mic and commands. Basically it's the same as if you plugged it in usgin a "regular" jack cable (that bose sells, or used to, btw)
- if you use the "play and then plug jack in headset" workaround, sound will work, the main button too : it'll play/pause, but if you stop and quit tha music app, the problem will come back
- almost the same with a call, if you call your phone and wait for it to ring before pluging the jack into your hedset the sound will work both sound and mic, but the button fonctions are weird : at first it'll aswer the call, but afterwards it'll work as an on/off switch for the mic.
- Best solution I found : when you plug your headset and have the parasite problem, just press the main button on your remote, it'll stop the problem... but the button won't work anymore, either to answer/hangup or play/pause. I use this solution ftm, even if I don't think it's good for the headset to have this clicking parasite, and I'm still waiting on a way to make everything work all the time.

Have you tried with a CTIA to OMTP converter .
Hi, thanks.
No, i should, but I thought that all android phones were ctia now... I don't have my moto handless kit with me, but I'll try it with my gf's xperia sp to see if it works with it, since my bose headset works perfectly with the xperia.
Anyone knows if the moto g is ctia ?
Any other ideas ?

All Stereo Head phones normally use a 3 Pin Jack, Cell phones use a 4 pin, I found this out before with some other audio products..
I confirm all the informations about the problem and the workaround concerning a Moto X and the QC15 I just got. I hope a solution will be found. Does anybody tried that amazon product ?

I have a Droid Maxx and the QC15. The android inline remote & mic kit from Amazon have the same problem as the iphone cable that comes with the QC15 headphones. Quite annoying. Also, I can't get the workaround to work. No matter what I do, I only get sound from the left speaker.
I had a similar problem (no audio, weird noise in right ear) with Moto-G and QC15. The workaround that succeeded for me was to change the headphone gain from Hi to Lo. The gain switch is in the plug that connects the wire to the left earcup.
This supports the suggestion that the issue is caused by some impedance measurement routine on the phone.

My Bose QC 15 headphones had a problem with the iPhone-compatible cable, that includes a volume control and microphone.
Another "audio only" Bose cable that omits the volume control and microphone is also available off eBay for ~$10.
I asked Bose for an Android-compatible version with volume control and microphone, and they said they're "considering making one".
normally the headphone jack provides a link for headphones with e.g. microphones or buttons (to accept calls), which uses the same wires as for the audio.
the effect can be triggered by e.g. dirty connectors. so I once had a new pair of headphones and on the connector jack there was a bit of debris (glue or whatever left). they did also cause the phone to pause/play every now and then. so I cleaned them and then they did work without problems. also sometimes the connectors have to "grind in" until there is a good electrical connection.
however as it is steadily pausing/playing on your iPhone 5 headphones, I dont think theres an issue with the connection itself.
it might just be that the iPhone 5 headphones are trying to "communicate" with your phone, which it doesnt support and therefore is misinterpreting it as the start/stop commands. you cant do anything about it I guess.
(except dont buy apple products anymore )
