If you don't factory reset, you will bootloop.
I'd recommend you use fastboot to flash back to kk. Any time you change android versions you should wipe your device which means to get it to work you will lose your apps and data.

Hey guys, I've read a lot on updating after being rooted, but just need to confirm before I do mess up anything.
All I have done is Rooted Stock (I have TWRP on the phone), and have flashed volume mod, and also battery percent mod. (Other then that I am running Nova Launcher, Titanium Backup)
Guessing I need to flash the back to stock for volume and battery percent (Correct if I am wrong).
And then how exactly do I go about updating to 4.4.2 and preferably retaining root?
Sorry I know noob question, just making sure as I've always unrooted, and never had any mods when I have done updates in the past.
1) you have to flash back to stock system image since you modded your phone
2) once you either get the OTA or sideload it, you just flash cwm/twrp in fastboot and then flash the supersu.zip

so in other words go back and unroot completely, go completely back to stock, and redo everything from the beginning?
Just flash the 4.4.2 stock rooted rom in the dev section

You are flashing back the stock ROM. If you want to keep data intact, flash only the boot.img, system.img

I guess I need a tutorial on what you guys are talking about because I still am not understanding..
Would flashing the rooted 4.4.2 work? And if so what do I need to do before I flash this?
How exactly do I go about only flashing only the boot.img and system.img?
Will I loose anything through this process?

One safe way to get the OTA, taking into account that you modded your phone, is:
i) flash system.img then flash stock recovery,
ii) once the OTA update is on your phone and you have accepted it (it installed itself) you are back to stock.
iii)flash your custom recovery and re-install your SuperSu to get back your root.

Due to bugs that started from 4.4.3, i will be downgrading from 4.4.4 to 4.4.2
I'm running stock rom (4.4.4) with xposed + gravity box.
Each time when upgrading from 4.4 to 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 etc I would simply flash the system.img from the downloaded factory image, then reinstall xposed and root, hence not needing to wipe userdata.
Would it be ok to do this in reverse? Ie flash the system.img of 4.4.2 without wiping anything? Cheers!

I haven't but many other users are having the same issues with 4.4.3
There shouldn't be incompatible data anyway as i'm upgrading from stock rom to stock rom. Flashing the system and boot images through fastboot would give the same result as updating via the OTA updates as far as i understand

Yes you're right it would. I always recommend a wipe after an OTA too. Your OTA doesn't know if the apps you have are compatible or not.

U cant update using air push if ur rooted u can simply flash a 5.0.1 custom rom

Read any of the recent threads. You have to be 100% stock. Just flash the recovery, boot, and system from 5.0 in fastboot then do the ota

Hey, I was wondering if it'd be possible to downgrade from stock 5.1 back to stock 5.0.1 by running the flash command in the factory nexus 5 image (for android 5.0.1), also downgrading the bootloader and radio in the process?
I'm not sure about this device, but I recently hard bricked my moto g downgrading from the android 5 bootloader to the android 4.4 bootloader, so I was hesitant to just run the downgrade process.

Can I just follow this instructions to downgrade from 5.1 to 5.0.1? Or should I do something else? I'll lose root, right? 5.1 messed up my Nexus 5, battery is lasting 40% less than it used to, and Google Play Services seems to be to blame. Getting real sick of this.

Anytime you flash any factory images you're device will be wiped clean. Data, app, everything. So back up anything important.

Is there any way to get my user data back, so app settings ans so on? If i just restore the data partition from the backup i made on 5.1 with TWRP i get a botloop. It makes sense that i can't just use my user data from a higher version but how do i fix this?

You have to flash 5.1 again. Restore data from TWRP. Boot the phone and use some backup program (titanium backup is my favourite). Flash 5.0.1 again (do not restore backup from TWRP), boot and restore from the app you choose. You will probably get some force closes, but you can then just wipe data for those FC apps.
Quick suggestion: if it is possible, make .xml backups for system data.

You need to perform a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik cache) in order to go down, which will wipe everything except your internal storage. You can use Titanium Backup to make a backup of your apps and then restore them after you've flashed the cm-12.0-YNG1TAS2I3 zip. Titanium requires root, so if you don't have root you'll need to flash SuperSU in order to use it.
Why do you wanna downgrade good sir? is there some problems?
im still on kitkat 4.4, and since the new update to COS12.1, i've been considering to upgrade, but still trying to consider the pros & cons here

Downgraded oneplus one from cm 12.1 to cm 12 on stock recovery and without unlocking the bootloader...
