Battery depleting while charging. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Has anyone else encountered this?
While charging, my battery LOSES charge slowly while plugged in. It says its charging though, normally I'd think its a connection issue, but the connection is never dropped.
It seems as though it converges to about 50% if not in use, (e.g. overnight). If at 100%, it will drop to 50%, and if at 0%, it will rise to 50%.
If in use, there's no hope, automatic drop to 0% slowly.
I have tried different chargers, batteries, outlets, etc. I don't think its a software issue, because battery life off the charger is normal. I'm wondering if there is an issue in how the phone ACCEPTS charge. It seems as though that's the only explanation, but I'm not an expert, haha.
Any thoughts?

That's a very strange issue. I know I encountered a lot of issues when I used fast charge a lot on my S3 like an idiot. Are the batteries your trying oem?

One is definitely OEM, one looks OEM, but instead of saying "manufactured by SDI" it says something like "Made in Korea, Assembled in China". Very subtle difference.
I don't think it's a battery issue though, I've used those batteries all the time with no issue, then all of a sudden a few days ago the issue popped up.

Overheating?

Does any one else's Charge seem to get abnormally hot while charging? Like hot to the point where it's uncomfortable to put in my pocket after charging. Wondering if I should try and get the phone replaced before it fries itself or if it's just normal. Thanks!

Mine does it a lot, and its actually getting to the point where it wont charge my battery completely. Charged all last night, battery says 100%, but when I take it off the charger, its on 49%. And it died on 12%. Im taking it to VZW tomorrow to see if they can switch out the battery.

I know. Im actually on a replacement too. Its crazy, it did it with my other phone also. I only got a replacement due to the reception issues.

Verizon should replace the overheating phones. Mine overheated so badly that an error message popped up and said the phone could not charge because it was too hot.....something like that. I brought it to Verizon and they swapped it out no problem.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk
I wonder how many times they can swap out. Because mine overheats when it charges, and sometimes when itaint charging at all.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
definitely not normal. Mine charges off of a 2amp charger in under an hour from 10 to 100 percent without getting very hot. Make sure you change out the charger too, the phone might not be the only problem. If there is a partial short it could be causing it.
If it's doing it with the factory charger, yes, it's a problem. If you have an aftermarket charger (or battery), it's most likely that. These phones are a bit touchier than they ought to be about where they accept their power from.
Mine seems to get pretty hot as well. Lets hope that we can pull a fascinate and use the warranty to get the sgs2.
indeed
my charge is overheating as well. there are 2 instances when it overheats. while Charging and downloading a huge file from internet or the app that uses internet/data.
I have tried diff battery did not help. I assume everyones phone is like that. Charge has a overheating problems.
IF you are not agree with me try to torrent on the phone for 20min. Just for testing sake and prove me wrong.(I dont torrent but it is a perfect example)

I had the same thing on my original Charge when it shipped to me. Along with the heat issue, my phone was dying way faster than it should considering my setup.
I went to a VZW corp store and they switched me out with a new battery as part of the manufacturer's warranty program.
The new battery didn't overheat anymore and my battery lasted twice as long.
Either way, you have nothing to lose.
big red is shipping me a replacement today...hopefully its a good one!
As always, if you are having heat problems I recommend underclocking/volting to 800mhz. Last time I did that it solved ALL my heat problems completely! It would only get ever so slightly warm when watching Netflix(the most data and system intensive app I know of). Never hot though.

Battery drain while charging

I'm currently running Sean's latest leak/update and have noticed significant battery drain despite being plugged into the charger. I never really paid enough attention while on gb roms, so I'm not sure if this is an ics thing or not. My buddy at work has had similar issues and is completely bone stock, so I'm thinking it's just a skyrocket issue.
Anybody else notice this? It happens no matter what I'm doing on the phone and is obviously more noticeable when playing games. It seems to me that the charger should at least compensate for the usage!
It had me so baffled, I've re-flashed multiple times now with the same results.

Yeah... it's 5v/1a. Same with my buddy. I thought that might be the problem, and I had switched it with an old one, but don't think so. I've used the powerskin in the past, and it's also 5v/1a... still drains with it.
I'm totally puzzled! I've changed chargers, gone with/without the powerskin, re-flashed roms, calibrated the battery and who knows what else. Only thing I hadn't done was replace the battery, but now that my buddy is having issues on stock, I don't know if that's the problem or not....

Its probably the battery while charging check if in about phone it says its conncted to ac.
Also are you rooted?
Could also be the cable. I have had the exact issue, replaced the cable and now its fine. Its funny cause the galaxy s2 is far more picky when it comes to chargers/cables. For instance. I can plug it in and the phone won't do a think, yet when I plug it in the skyrocket it will accept the connection.

Test your receptacle with a digital multi meter . The stock charger works great. Enough so
That i spliced 3 high quality usb cable and have over a ten foot cable which charges just fine.
So its possible. U have a bad charger. Crap cables. Or overdrawn circuit whith your receptacles. No enough to trip but enough your charger cant pull 1 amp

I did a 1.5 hour Skype video while on charge and my battery never charged it held at the same percentage. Anything else I do charging outweighs my use. Gotta be the charger or the phone itself. Even if you have no battery in it should still boot off the charger and run correct?

Use any type of root explorer, while charging got to sys/class/power supply/battery
and open batt_current_xxx or something like this, I'll check it later if you get into troubles, breaking my head now with tasker at the moment. It should show a value around 8500, at least that's what it shows for me.
I'm having the same issue on Sean's latest update, my battery current adc file says 2934... I posted this in the sky ics thread
"I've been having some battery issues since coming to this ROM on update six. I'm on nine now and all is well, battery life included once I get it charged up. I'm using OEM Samsung everything, charging block, two different cables, my original battery and a 2100Mah extended for the Gnex. All Samsung, no change between them. This thing just REFUSES to charge if I'm using it while plugged in, and if I leave it alone and let it charge, it takes absolutely forever to charge either battery. The skyrocket battery won't gain one percent charge if I'm using it while plugged in, and the Gnex battery actually discharges slowly! Any ideas? I bought this phone from a member on here and it came with superlite 5 and I don't recall it having this problem."
If the file reading is that low there must be an issue with the amp, if you tried a different charger and cables and it happened since changing roms I'd say its a pure software issue. Maybe you should try flashing a different kernel before trying to change your rom, the problem may be laying there.
I had the same issue but mine was related to the usb cable. With a new micro usb cable my phone charges without issue.

Battery issues anyone?

Had my baby for a little over a year and a half, been nothing but a great phone in that time. This is where the problem starts... I'll be using it like normal, texting and surfing, and will have 98% battery, the phone will shut down, and when it decides to start back up, I will have 14% battery or less.... But it will go up if I leave it alone..... I've tried wiping the battery stats, even charging with the phone off, nothing is working. I will attach screenshots so you can see what's up.

Your battery is bad. Same thing happened to me, I recommend just buying a new OEM battery from a reputable dealer on Amazon, that's what I did. Try setting it down on a table and push on one side and if it rocks back and forth its bad. Or you can just look at it and see its swollen
Mine did that and it was just a bad battery. If you take the battery out and place it on a flat surface you may notice that it rocks left and right. If it rocks a lot or if you feel the middle and it feels swollen it may be symptoms of a bad battery.

edit: Is it dangerous to keep using it like this for the next few days until the new battery comes in?

It is dangerous because battery acid can get on you and cause sever skin irritation. You can continue like this for 1 to 2 days MAX until you get your new battery. Try not to use it because using it more will cause it to swell more, DUH try to only use it for emergencies and then once you get the new battery clean the terminals and you'll be good to go
I used mine got a while like that because i didn't know it was the battery lol

I'm curious about charging habits of the people who have bad batteries. I have had my phone since the day it came out and my battery is still fine. I never let it get below 30% unless I'm testing a new ROM. Killing lithium ion batteries is really bad for them. So how many of you drain it all the way on a regular basis?
I'm still using my old vibrant battery (at times). I don't think that it's as strong as the spare that I purchased a few months ago, but, is on par with the 18 month old battery that came with the phone. I zap them all the way down a lot of the time (then swap to a fully charged one). I do(try) to recharge to full before use though.
Mine does it but only when I'm using wifi or data could that still be a bad battery

I run mine down to 1 percent on a daily basis. Never let it die though. I was under the impression that if you let it drain to zero you're asking for trouble. I could easily change my ways though.

Shallow discharge cycles are generally accepted to be better for Li-ion batteries than deep ones.

That is probably a bad idea. I would try to plug it in around 15-20% with 20% being the best time. According to the batteryuniversity website 20-80% is ideal for li-ion batteries because it keeps the heat down. Charging from less than 15% creates heat because that is a low level and takes a bit longer to charge from therefore exposes the battery to more heat. A good charger and battery will shut off the charger once it hits 100% and only allow for a trickle charge if the battery drops below 100%. But I have seen my phone get hotter from about 85% to 100% if Im using it ie: plugged in and streaming music or using navigation.

[Q] Should Incoming mA fluctuate? GF's phone charging extremelly slow

It's a JiaYu G2. Generally they are very well reviewed. Well, she's had the phone for about 10 days and all of a sudden it stopped charging regularly... It charges extremely slowly. Leaving it overnight for 8 hours charges it only about 30%.
Some of what we tried:
Had her do a power off and battery pull and restart
Charge while turned off
We checked the incoming mA via JiaYu's engineering menu (*#59#) and the incoming mA are fluctuating between 200-450. Is that normal? or should it be a more steady number?
Really really really hoping it's the charger and not the phone. Shipping the phone back and dealing with the Chinese on a customer service issue isn't my idea of a fun couple of weeks.
Ummm... Nobody knows if incoming mA fluctuates?
I have no idea, but have you tried another charger? If the source is really what's fluctuating, it sounds like a charger or other problem.
Maybe the battery is bad. You could try a different one, too. I have no idea if that would cause those symptoms, but you could Google it.

Thanks for your reply. We ordered another charger (from USA) and waiting for it to arrive. Her first language isn't English and she doesn't have transportation, so she's shy to go to an electronics shop.
Another battery would have to be ordered from China. She tested it out with an external charger and it seemed to charge much better than in the phone, but still quite slow... Not enough evidence either way to conclude if it's the battery because it's one of those multi-battery charges where the "pins" can be expanded to accomodate different batteries.... It hasn't been tested with a different battery, so not sure what "normal" charging time is with it.
The phone is only 10 days old...Really hoping it's not the phone... Dealing with Chinese companies on any sort of customer service issue is a nightmare.
What I was hoping was that someone knew about this... Regarding incoming mA from the wall charger... I don't know enough about it... Whether or not fluctuating from 200-500 is normal...
Anyone with a JiaYu G2 could test this out... Or anyone who has "live" mA data read capability through engineering mode or perhaps even "current widget" and can see if it fluctuates...
I'll check that out when I charge tonight if no one else gets back to you. It doesn't sound right to me since my wall charger does a pretty dead-on 2 hour charge at 1000mA, but perhaps it fluctuates and I don't notice (not my area).

Unfortunately, I have discovered that neither my phone or tablet support monitoring incoming current levels.
One thing I thought of is that perhaps the phone is regulating current so that it is "fast" charging at 400mAh and then going down for the final bit. This seems to be an idea I've heard of before. 400mAh is still pretty low for a wall-charger, though - does it fluctuate all the time, or is there a pattern ? What is the charger *supposed* to proivide ?
I'm thinking about how charging from my computer's USB, it charges at a rate of 500mAh - and that will still charge to 100% in less than a night. Even if it was only drawing 200mAh all night, it should still be fully charged, definitely not just 30% (it would have to have an unheard of high capacity for that to make sense).
I don't know a lot about electricity, but I would wonder if the voltage is wrong or something, maybe ?
Hopefully someone who knows more about electricity will see this.

The wall charger is rated for 500mA output... It's within seconds... I don't mean staying steady and then changing at the end.
I really need another battery and a charger. The charger should be arriving within a few days, so we should be to eliminate that as the issue, but if it doesn't fix the issue, still won't know if it's the battery or the phone.
I have a sneaking suspicion it's the phone... but hoping to here some good news here that fluctuating between 250-450 is NOT normal, thus likely the charger... But as you mentioned, even if left at 200 it still should fully charge overnight... Unless the fluctuating is causing the battery to not accept the charge properly... I don't know
What a pain in the ass. I guess there's something to be said for buying local.

Charger issue?

After v charging my phone and unplugging the charger it makes a buzzing noise as if there's still electricity running through it. Is this normal? My phone charges fine but I wanted to make sure the charger was safe and not an issue. My battery seems like it goes down fast too though I might be imagining it because I think the b first 2 days it was great and lasted me all day after a full charge.

Nothing to worry about. This topic was brought up in an old Nexus 4 thread and the overall consensus was that it wasn't a big deal. My N4 charger did the same thing. If I never randomly saw that thread. I probably never would have put my ear up to the charger to discover such a thing. I'll have to seashell this new one and see or listen rather to what happens.
The charger is a tansfomer so it will buzz naturally
