Overheating? - Verizon Droid Charge

Does any one else's Charge seem to get abnormally hot while charging? Like hot to the point where it's uncomfortable to put in my pocket after charging. Wondering if I should try and get the phone replaced before it fries itself or if it's just normal. Thanks!

Mine does it a lot, and its actually getting to the point where it wont charge my battery completely. Charged all last night, battery says 100%, but when I take it off the charger, its on 49%. And it died on 12%. Im taking it to VZW tomorrow to see if they can switch out the battery.

not normal you have a problem
SENT FROM THE DOG POUND

I know. Im actually on a replacement too. Its crazy, it did it with my other phone also. I only got a replacement due to the reception issues.

Verizon should replace the overheating phones. Mine overheated so badly that an error message popped up and said the phone could not charge because it was too hot.....something like that. I brought it to Verizon and they swapped it out no problem.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk

I wonder how many times they can swap out. Because mine overheats when it charges, and sometimes when itaint charging at all.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App

definitely not normal. Mine charges off of a 2amp charger in under an hour from 10 to 100 percent without getting very hot. Make sure you change out the charger too, the phone might not be the only problem. If there is a partial short it could be causing it.

If it's doing it with the factory charger, yes, it's a problem. If you have an aftermarket charger (or battery), it's most likely that. These phones are a bit touchier than they ought to be about where they accept their power from.

Mine seems to get pretty hot as well. Lets hope that we can pull a fascinate and use the warranty to get the sgs2.

indeed
my charge is overheating as well. there are 2 instances when it overheats. while Charging and downloading a huge file from internet or the app that uses internet/data.
I have tried diff battery did not help. I assume everyones phone is like that. Charge has a overheating problems.
IF you are not agree with me try to torrent on the phone for 20min. Just for testing sake and prove me wrong.(I dont torrent but it is a perfect example)

I had the same thing on my original Charge when it shipped to me. Along with the heat issue, my phone was dying way faster than it should considering my setup.
I went to a VZW corp store and they switched me out with a new battery as part of the manufacturer's warranty program.
The new battery didn't overheat anymore and my battery lasted twice as long.
Either way, you have nothing to lose.

big red is shipping me a replacement today...hopefully its a good one!

As always, if you are having heat problems I recommend underclocking/volting to 800mhz. Last time I did that it solved ALL my heat problems completely! It would only get ever so slightly warm when watching Netflix(the most data and system intensive app I know of). Never hot though.

Killed my Infuse...

Well I think my Infuse is now a goner.
Initially had charging problems, brought it into ATT and they noted corrosion and blamed it on me, warranty voided and I was SOL.
Purchased a replacement charging port and found out that the damn thing is soldered on. Well I attempted it and accidentally lifted the solder pads.
wanna sell it? or you can try to do the touchstone mod. i pulled mine apart to see how hard it would be to do and it doesnt look to difficult. i would've done it to mine but my infuse is only a couple weeks old. just google touchstone mod if you havent heard of it. but you wont be able to send data you can only use it to charge it wirelessly.
Poor you
I bought an extra pair of batteries along with a will charger, I haven't used the charging port in months. Something you might want to consider.

But still that's going to be a hassle because you would have to chharge each battery at night and the batteries might not even last long

On Ebay battery charger plus 2 1900 mah batteries for $15ish, which 1900mah is supposed to last longer than stock something you may want to look into, also if you do get your charger port working again then you can charge one via the battery dock and charge the one that's in your phone at the same time (it has USB port on bottom of battery dock) a also its smart charging so it doesn't ruin the battery if you leave it on there all the time

They're 1900mAh batteries, lasts me 19 hours on average. I'm sure it's more of a hassle to have your phone plugged into a wall than it is to leave a battery in the wall.

Im not really sure why, but on my old infuse my phobe wouldnt charge anymore so if charge my batterys off my dads infuse. And i was for sure it was a hardware problem. Then wen my dad upgraded phones a month later he give me his old and i was going to return my old infuse back to ebay. But somehow i fixed it b4 we returned it. Iv tryed changing roms and whiped that phone like no other then randomly after i factory reset on a custum rom it fixed it self.. idk how it fixed it self but it happend. So its possible its a software issue
Not a hassle at all. I rotate between 3 batteries, I haven't plugged my phone in in over two months... I don't see that as a hassle. All I do is power down my phone once a day to swap batteries, nothing like going from 5% to 100% in a battery of minutes. I use to stress about battery life, but that hasn't been an issue since. Its probably become what I brag most about to iphone users.

What about us users that have a nice protective case on it? I use a casemate that has 2 layers of protection, and would be a pain in the butt to remove everyday. And if you use an Otterbox case, those things are damn near impossible to get off without a struggle.
Obviously if you lock up your phone like Fort Knox then this method is not for you. I have a case mate case and I have no issue taking it off once a day, far less troubling than keeping it plugged in hours everyday whilst trying to use it.

I'm not worried about it. I have a car charger if I need to charge while out. I'll be damned if I'm going to open my case every day. If it floats your boat, go for it.

One S Overheating problem?

I woke up in the middle of the night (4am.) because my phone pretty much burned me and scared the hell out of me while it was charging. The phone was there with a black screen and heated a little over 120 degrees f (measured by a meat thermometer ).
When I pressed the lock button to unlock it, it turned on (I left it charging on) and had less than 50% of battery left. As i pressed the lock button again, the phone rebooted two more times until it let me turn it off.
Anyone know what's wrong and should I contact htc or costco from which I bought it from?
Do you use the charger / usb cable given by HTC ?
Because one time, I tried to charge my phone with another usb cable and my phone was also hot ! (But I don't think like you wow !)

Oh, I'm not the only one then, nice
Mine has gotten hot as well, but that is usually while I use it, not when it's just laying in my bed
My wife always gives me a hard time for sleeping with my phone, lol, it's on our lamp table next to our bed, but since I don't like leaving the phone on a hard surface, it's usually next to me on our bed, LOL.
Mines was overheating a bit when charging with an extended second party charger, but once I started using the HTC charger that came with the phone, it was fine. Also seemed to charge faster with the stock charger, maybe it's a figment of my imagination, who knows.
My phone heated up crazy mad when I watched a movie through the mhl adapter and since the phone is some kind of metal, therefore a perfect conductor, the whole phone was painfully hot to touch. Scared me ****less I've had a lot of android phones and this is the first time . I didn't want to chance it and exchanged it in store still within my 15 day exchange period whew. Anybody know what woulda caused it to overheat like an oven?

mines heats up too. is this every or just some units?
it heats up when playing games or surfing the web.
Mine heats up as well it's all phones.
I had this problem with my Amaze/etc.
Replacement will be the same so don't bother.
Proven to be wrong
The amperage of the adapter doesn't matter, as the phone will only draw as much current as it needs, and no more.
I use the charger for my HP Touchpad with all kinds of phones, and it's rated for 5V 2.0amps.
Mine stays at 105 degrees when I'm doing any gpc or 4g stuff on it when its not charging or anything is that normal ?

I think of it this way... I have a dual core 1.5ghz processor running inside a super thin aluminum case. I expect it to get hot, and even hotter when charging or under load. As long as I'm in warranty and the phone still works fine, I'm not going to worry about it.
Now, if it's causing SOD problems, that's different.
Just some units have a faulty battery or loose cable ever since I exchanged my faulty heating up one no heating at all
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
I'd be careful where you leave your phone charging. The daughter of family friends left her phone unattended charging on the bed and unfortunately set the bed on fire. This went on to pretty much destroy the house. NOT an urban myth either. Laptops and anything that charges need a little caution.
For those sleeping with their phones - stop it! The phone is big enough to sleep on its own
My overheating is gone I believe. It was there the first 24 hours. I guess because it was the first time it was being used.
After I fully charged it off, it doesnt get as hot anymore.
same here--
That was a one time thing hasn't happen agian.

Woke up to my phone super hot!

So I plugged in my phone last night like normal and when I woke up my phone was nuclear hot. This used to happen to my Sensation when I'd fall asleep playing a game or something and the screen was on all night but this wasn't the case with my One S. Also when I took it off the charger it had only charged to 62%. Anyone have any idea what would cause this to happen, and has this happened to anyone else?

Check battery stats for weird stuff, also did you use original charger? My one s never gets warm while using it unless its on full brightness. Granted I never play games on it though. Id get it exchanged unless I found a good reason it overheated, especially after googling for lithium ion battery fire videos

Battery issues anyone?

Had my baby for a little over a year and a half, been nothing but a great phone in that time. This is where the problem starts... I'll be using it like normal, texting and surfing, and will have 98% battery, the phone will shut down, and when it decides to start back up, I will have 14% battery or less.... But it will go up if I leave it alone..... I've tried wiping the battery stats, even charging with the phone off, nothing is working. I will attach screenshots so you can see what's up.

Your battery is bad. Same thing happened to me, I recommend just buying a new OEM battery from a reputable dealer on Amazon, that's what I did. Try setting it down on a table and push on one side and if it rocks back and forth its bad. Or you can just look at it and see its swollen
Mine did that and it was just a bad battery. If you take the battery out and place it on a flat surface you may notice that it rocks left and right. If it rocks a lot or if you feel the middle and it feels swollen it may be symptoms of a bad battery.

Same thing has been happening to me for the past two days. I just took out my battery and sure enough it is swollen. Thanks for input!
edit: Is it dangerous to keep using it like this for the next few days until the new battery comes in?

It is dangerous because battery acid can get on you and cause sever skin irritation. You can continue like this for 1 to 2 days MAX until you get your new battery. Try not to use it because using it more will cause it to swell more, DUH try to only use it for emergencies and then once you get the new battery clean the terminals and you'll be good to go
I used mine got a while like that because i didn't know it was the battery lol

I'm curious about charging habits of the people who have bad batteries. I have had my phone since the day it came out and my battery is still fine. I never let it get below 30% unless I'm testing a new ROM. Killing lithium ion batteries is really bad for them. So how many of you drain it all the way on a regular basis?
I'm still using my old vibrant battery (at times). I don't think that it's as strong as the spare that I purchased a few months ago, but, is on par with the 18 month old battery that came with the phone. I zap them all the way down a lot of the time (then swap to a fully charged one). I do(try) to recharge to full before use though.
Mine does it but only when I'm using wifi or data could that still be a bad battery

I run mine down to 1 percent on a daily basis. Never let it die though. I was under the impression that if you let it drain to zero you're asking for trouble. I could easily change my ways though.

Shallow discharge cycles are generally accepted to be better for Li-ion batteries than deep ones.

That is probably a bad idea. I would try to plug it in around 15-20% with 20% being the best time. According to the batteryuniversity website 20-80% is ideal for li-ion batteries because it keeps the heat down. Charging from less than 15% creates heat because that is a low level and takes a bit longer to charge from therefore exposes the battery to more heat. A good charger and battery will shut off the charger once it hits 100% and only allow for a trickle charge if the battery drops below 100%. But I have seen my phone get hotter from about 85% to 100% if Im using it ie: plugged in and streaming music or using navigation.

Battery depleting while charging.

Has anyone else encountered this?
While charging, my battery LOSES charge slowly while plugged in. It says its charging though, normally I'd think its a connection issue, but the connection is never dropped.
It seems as though it converges to about 50% if not in use, (e.g. overnight). If at 100%, it will drop to 50%, and if at 0%, it will rise to 50%.
If in use, there's no hope, automatic drop to 0% slowly.
I have tried different chargers, batteries, outlets, etc. I don't think its a software issue, because battery life off the charger is normal. I'm wondering if there is an issue in how the phone ACCEPTS charge. It seems as though that's the only explanation, but I'm not an expert, haha.
Any thoughts?

One is definitely OEM, one looks OEM, but instead of saying "manufactured by SDI" it says something like "Made in Korea, Assembled in China". Very subtle difference.
I don't think it's a battery issue though, I've used those batteries all the time with no issue, then all of a sudden a few days ago the issue popped up.
