[Q] Chrome Address Bar Auto Fill - General Questions and Answers

I have tried several keyboards and so far only google and SwiftKey seem to let the address bar in chrome auto complete. Now, I'm not talking about the suggestions down below. I mean, when I want to visit XDA all I have to do is type "x" and it will automatically fill the address bar itself with XDA-developers.com. Every other keyboard will suggest the site below the address bar but not directly into it.
This is a minor annoyance but it is nice to be able to type the first letter of a site and just hit enter and I am immediately taken there. Is this something that developers need to enable in their keyboard apps, or some setting I can enable (I've tried looking). I'm confused as to why it works with some keyboards and not others.
Verizon HTC M8 same issue on stock KK and loli.

The Developers need to build it in their app., like you said the 2 keyboards do have support build in for chrome and the other ones doesn't have it.
For some Keyboards you can turn it on/off in the settings since not everyone likes auto-correct.

It isn't just auto correct feature. Auto correct will usually correct a word or give a prediction just above the keyboard. The feature I'm talking about is more of an auto fill. If I type x my keyboard will guess XDA but the address bar will still only show the letter x and if I hit enter it will show Google search results for x. But my stock keyboard and Google keyboard will, once I hit the x key, auto fill the address bar with xda-developers.com. And then when I hit enter take me here. I know it isn't a major feature but it is personally an annoyance
The strange part is that the stock M8 keyboard is done by either Touch Pal or Swype I forget which but I have tried both of them and neither will auto complete the address bar.

Theme Keyboard For HTC Incredible

I have 2 keyboard apk theme, one a theme from Xperia10, thanks to Jonasl and the second is the one I created from the link below, keybard is red and black, look really great on the Incredible. I been running this on my phone with no issue nor lag. Hope you guys like it.
Below is the link to create your own theme keyboard. Thanks to Jonasl and GimpSta.
http://www.gimpsta.com/themer/
HTC_IME_hi.apk is the Xperia10 keyboard
HTC_IME_themed_by_gIMpSTa.apk is the red and black keyboard
Couldn't get the red themed one working. Installed it, selected it from the keyboard selection settings.. tried restarting the phone/etc, still won't work. What is the trick to get it working?
Try installing the one that says it is an upgrade, i got it to work. the Red is pretty cool.
Install the Xperia10 theme first n then install the red theme last, it should ask to upgrade. See of that work.

Hey guys, i got it working, all you do is install the file from gimpsta, go to language/keyboard activate the HTC IME MOD. then go to any where u can get a text field (messages/mail/gtalk/sms) touch and hold the entry field, choose text input and change to htcime mod
Heres mine
http://tweetphoto.com/21788185
I made my own keyboard scheme, and after I install the custom keyboard, it still uses the default keyboard instead. any suggestions.
Nevermind... after restarting it worked.
Worked for me.
o Downloaded both APK files located in the first post of this thread.
o Installed the HTC_IME_hi.apk First
o Activated it: Menu > Language & keyboard > Select THC_IME mode
o Installed HTC_IME_themed_by_gIMpSTa.apk
o Turn HTC_IME as active keyboard. I used email, compose, Press and hold below the signature. Window pops up, Select Input Method and chose HTC_IME mod.
o I also reset (powered off and then back on) the phone.
Below is the two keyboard layouts. One for Alpha the other Numeric.

I just want to thank whoever put this together, I spent about an hour making different themes, one thing I wish we could keep on the themed keyboards is the button on the bottom left that drops the keyboard out of view.
I do miss that, but... all you need to do is hit the back button on the bottom and it does the same thing.

There is an easy solution to this, that is a bit "cooler" than the button. In the keyboard options, you can enable "Gestures" Swiping Up, Down, Right, or Left can be programmed to a few commands, including "hide keyboard"
I personally have:
Swipe Down = Hide Keyboard
Swipe Back = Delete last word
Thanks for krelvinaz and shizs14 for the mod.
This keyboard is well and above better than the regular keyboard, almost just for the extra options available to the user! The color is a bonus.
Krelvinaz:
I might suggest modifying step 5 to compose a new item, and "Long press in text box" the part about the signature threw me off a bit. It wasn't clear to me at first.
For me, I can switch keyboard in any text box (not contact input) on the fly by doing this.
Works great when handing your phone to rookie, or someone who wants to try the different keyboards, I have Stock set to "Full Querty", this IME mod to Compact (my default) and Swype as a fun alternate.

Since upgrading to 2.2, this doesn't seem to work any more. Load okay, but when you go to use it, it errors out.

Any suggestions?

Thumb Keyboard 4.0 - Beta (upd. Beta closed)

Update may 23: The beta is now closed. Thank you all for your participation and feedback. Please keep your suggestions coming. Suggestions and requests are welcome in the Thumb Keyboard thread in the paid-for app forum here on xda (link will follow)
--------------------------------
New beta 4:
Customizable toolbar. The toolbar can be switch on or off with a simple toggle. For phones as well as for tablet (Gingerbread and Honeycomb have more functions to assign to the toolbar keys)
New small keyboard for one handed operation on a 10" tablet. It also contains a "blind spot" which you can use to hold your tablet.
------
Thrilled to announce a brand new version of Thumb Keyboard.
It's a total rebuild from scratch of the current market version, therefore I decided to launch it first as a public beta.
Besides a whole new core that is optimized for Gingerbread and Honeycomb, the new version (v. 4.0) introduces a whole lot of new features:
multi-touch
Correct previous written words with suggestions
Shortcuts - store and edit much written phrases, mail signatures, logins and insert them with a simple tap
New addition to the prediction algorithm: predict a word based on a previous word
New: resize the width of the letter keys on the split layouts. With the option to adjust the height, one can now adjust the keyboard completely to ones own hands and device!!
Alternative suggestions for voice input. Just tap on the recognized word to see the alternatives
Redesign of the keyboard based on multi-touch chording. Entering numbers and operating the cursor keys was never more easy!
New style popup keyboards. Fling, slide and wipe and back to typing again ..
New design of the keyboard layout. Easier access of much used keys
Better esthetic integration with Honeycomb by the use of Honeycomb style windows
and more (and still more to come
The beta can be downloaded from thumb4beta.blogspot.com
(Because the beta was already out for some weeks for 10.1" tablets, some may wonder why this separate announcement. The reason is that the current version will support all screen sizes and layouts, just like the current market version. This means a lot more devices to be supported and a lot more test cases)
Looking forward to your feedback, suggestions, comments, bug reports (hope none ) etc.
-----
Update (May 3):
Version 4 beta 3.2: added Custom portrait/landscape layout combination * Smiley popup keyboards now on all layouts * new theme "digital red" * custom keyclick sounds * better dictionaries * 12 extra shorcut or quicktext slots * Return key in instant messaging apps * option to exclude contact database from predictions * some bug fixes
Awesome! Big fan of your work. We've talked via email about the keyboard. I still use it. Downloading now.

Thought I've send you mail too. Let me know what you think about it.
Personally I think this is a BIG improvement over the version over the version on the Market. One of the things I liked about the stock GB keyboard was you could tap previously entered words and change what was entered. Love seeing that in here.
The only thing I don't see is being able to set different layouts for portrait and landscape. Being a phone user, I like that the hide keyboard button is hidden.
Big speed improvements as well. Great job!
Thanks going to give this a try!

Thanks! The ability to set different layouts for landscape and portrait mode will certainly come back. It's one of the core functioneren of this keyboard. I left it out just to have something to do while the beta is tested
If you are on Gingerbread or Honeycomb you should try out the bigram predictions (only English supported right now). It will predict in many cases the next word with the previous word and just one letter. For example if you type "of" and then the letter t you get a bunch of relevant words starting with a t and that makes sense as the next word after "of". Great feature for phones. (It will also learn from word pairs that are entered a lot)

Nice, I'm loving it so far, I've been waiting for something that actually *KNOWS* what you want type next and learns other than swiftkey. The only thing I ask you, is please give us the option to enlarge the spacebar by removing the smile faces, comma, and or period key.
Thank you, and how else besides the blog and this thread can I keep up with the latest beta releases?

Will look into that.
The beta releases are all published on http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com
You can subscribe to that blog to get a notification when a change is made.
I've had a lot of downloads and yet no single bug report. I like to think that the keyboard is completely bug free, but that would be wishful thinking in the context of this giant project.
Any bugs? Please report them here or on the beta site.
I have found what I like to think is a bug.
Say I want to enter todays date. I long press the q for the number 1, the I select the "/" from the upper row and then I long press the t for the number 5. So far so good.
Now I want to enter a different date, like 29/5. I long press to get a 2, the I long press to get a 9. Now the upper bar is empty, and I can't select the "/" there
Another bug: I can't long press the p key to get a 0. All the other keys work.
And a little warning to Desire/Nexus One owners, if you long press the ?123 button while selecting a button on the lower row on the keyboard ( ! " ' : ; / ?), it will probably not work that well. It has to to do with the multitouch on those devices. It has to to with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhBRMaUn6Ig
If you want I can make a video showing all of these problems.
what about Portuguese - PT? Any plans on implement it?
very nice thank you nice sharing

I'm able to hold P to get 0. Using the standard layout.
After fiddling around with the different keyboards I got it to work too. After uninstalling and reinstalling however, it stopped working again.
EDIT: I found the problem, if I enable "long press for numbers and syn.." I can long-press P to get 0. If I disable it however it won't work.

Thank god a bug You are right, the standard-layout doesn't have a popup menu defined. Thanks for noticing. Will fix it asap.
Glad you sorted the other problem out. I couldn't reproduce it. In some cases the keyboard can act not as expected after a fresh install. In that case a simple, infamous reboot will fix the problem. (Seems like a general Android problem)

[Q] Android browser with non-scrolling navigation bar...?

I love my TF. I hate browsing the web on it. Such a shame that the job it is meant to do, is the job it seems to do most poorly. Perhaps its down to the browsers, since I have yet to find one that doesnt get in the way of my surfing. I would be happy if I could find one with a navigation bar that doesnt disappear every time I scroll down the page. I have plenty screen for it, why can't I at least have the option? Is there any browser with a static navigation bar? I'm not using a phone, so I'd like my navigation buttons to be accessable regardless of where on the page I'm at. I'd love to have my tabs static too! Why is this such a hard request? If firefox would just port it's pc interface over it's android browser(which i find stable but a crappy interface), I would be in love.
Oh, and I hate gestures. I like actual buttons with real text labels.
Please call me a noob and tell me what I'm looking for already exists. I will praise you for it.
Anyone else driven mad by the web browsing experience on honeycomb?

Just go to browser settings and go to the labs tab and then unchecked the quick controls box
I already have that unchecked. The problem is that when i scroll down, the back, forward, refresh, and home buttons disappear, along with the address bar. I want it to always be visible. from what i've seen, every browser for android does this, and it makes me batty.
just tap the screen and it comes back/ reappears.
I get that, but it's one tap and wait longer than I want to deal with. 5 browsers on my TF, and they all have this problem. I wonder if the ipad browser is any better...
have you tried dolphin mini? The addess bar stays on the top

Hi there, just wondering do you have problem with opera mobile displaying everything website smaller when compared to other browsers example stock browser. Every time opera will load the page with such small fonts it hurts to read. I tried to set the default zoom to 125% it looks better but problem is as soon as I click a link or open a new page, it will zoom out and gimme the small fonts again. Anyway to fix the zoom level?

hey
type in the address bar:
opera:config
hit enter, you'll see a page with diff. settings open up.
scroll down to:
"user prefs"
tap it and it'll expand then again scroll down to:
minimum font size
change the value from default 9 to whatever you like then scroll down to the bottom
and hit "save" button then hit 'ok' in the pop up.
also to speed up opera even more try this:
find "performance" section
tap to open
then scroll down and change the following values:
Max Connections Server 6
Max Connections Total 6
Max Persistent Connections 6
after, scroll down and hit save button then hit 'OK' in the pop up.
you can experiment with diff. values for "connections" settings, however I wouldn't go over 8,8,8 or 10,10,10 as some websites might load slower than with default values (4,6,4)
my browser doesn't always keep the saved settings, sometimes it'll revert to default values...
so it's really a hit or miss, at least for me...
also, the 'default zoom', 125% or whatever % you specify, happens when you double tap the text on screen, it'll zoom that amount
and also reflow the text to fit screen.

Swype 3.5 Beta

Major Swype update released yesterday.
http://beta.swype.com
You need to already be a beta tester.
I'm thrilled that they no longer automatically add words to the dictionary. That was my biggest complaint.
SwypeInc is pleased to announce the BETA release of the latest version of Swype!
With this version come two major new features, and several minor changes, bringing Swype support to more devices, and more stability for existing devices
Tap Correction - In v3 of Swype, we're introducing full tap correction functionality. Having trouble getting the hang of Swype and just want to tap for a little while? Prefer to tap out some words while Swyping others? No need to switch keyboards! Swype's powerful tap prediction and correction engine is based on many of the same principles that make Swyping so effective. We emphasize speed over accuracy, so tap away with reckless abandon and Swype will still make sure you're getting the words you want.
Automatic tap correction is enabled by default, but you can control exactly how it behaves through the new "Word Suggestion" category in Swype's settings screen. Simply long-press the Swype key, choose "Options" and then go to "Word Suggestion." You'll be able to set whether corrections happen automatically, whether Swype shows the actual tapped characters or the first suggestion in the active text field, and whether to show word suggestions at all.
Horizontal Word Choice List (HWCL) - While the pop-up Word Choice Window served us well for a long time, we have decided to utilize Android's built-in horizontal word choice list functionality, bringing us in line with evolving input standards.
Now, when you tap or Swype a word, suggestions will be displayed in a scrollable horizontal list above the keyboard. This has several major advantages:
No matter what happens, when you Swype something, a word will always be entered into the active text field.
We're able to display more suggestions at a time.
When you tap out a word, the characters you actually tapped - regardless of predictions - will appear at the beginning of the suggestion list.
Choosing to use a word you tapped in when it's not in our dictionary will offer an option to add that word to your dictionary via the HWCL; no more automatically adding misspelled words to the dictionary.
Honeycomb support - With v3 of Swype, we're now able to support tablets running Android Honeycomb with a customized layout and some awesome new features! The most noticable feature will be the "movable keyboard." With Swype active, press the "keyboard size" button in the lower-right corner. This will shrink the Swype keyboard to a size that's more conducive to Swyping, and allow you to tap-and-drag on the sides of the keyboard to move Swype to the center of the screen, the bottom left, or bottom right corner. It's excellent for people who want a one-handed thumb-swyping experience on their tablet, and for moving the keyboard out of the way when it's blocking something in the app you're using!
Extended device support - We've improved our licensing system in several ways, including the addition of support for devices that don't have a cellular plan. Bought a WiFi only Motorola Xoom? Now you can download the Swype BETA too! The new licensing scheme will work on any device that was SHIPPED with Android 2.3 or above, though older devices may work as well.
In addition to our licensing changes including better support for a wider range of devices, we've also fixed two pesky licensing bugs that many of you have complained about:
Swype will no longer fail to license after rebooting, with the error "Swype is configured for another device." This issue was due to a feature of new phones called "quickboot" and has been resolved.
On CDMA devices, Swype was unable to authorize its license when the device was in Airplane Mode. Now, if Swype detects that your device is in Airplane Mode, things will continue running as they should.
These changes are in addition to a wide array of minor compatibility updates, bug fixes, behavior changes, and feature updates. Swype v3 is a major milestone for us and we're proud to provide our BETA users with a first look at the work we've been doing on Swype over the past several months. We look forward to hearing your feedback on our forums, and hope you enjoy this powerful new version of Swype!
So, it says that it wont work if we already have Swype preinstalled with the phone. Does this matter if we we're rooted? I suppose I could remove the original Swype but has anyone tried installing this with Swype already installed?
just tried it out, it is much better for typing one letter at a time now which was my main issue with it
Just tried out. Looks much more better, wonder when will the release version come out after 18months
Just downloaded and installed. Seems to be working well. And it's quite easy to type on it too.
Oh, and you don't need to be a beta tester already. I signed up with a new account.

As far as your question, yes, it should be possible to install this on a phone where swype is pre-installed.
This is what I did on my Droid X. Please research and see if this method is compatible with other phones before you attempt it. Proceed at your own risk.
Must be rooted.
Make your default keyboard something other than sywpe.
Go into applications and do a force close, clear cache, clear data on Swype. (I think this step is very important. I skipped it the first time and got force closes after I installed the new swype).
Rename \system\app\swype.apk to swype.apk.bak
Rename \data\dalvik-cache\[email protected]@[email protected] to [email protected]@[email protected]
Rename \system\lib\libSwypeCore.so to libSwypeCore.so.bak
Reboot
Install Swype Installer and follow the directions
If you ever want stock swype back, unistall swype app, uninstall swype installer, reboot and then rename the 3 files back.
After installing this beta, I can no longer switch to other keyboards. No matter which one I select, swype always resets itself as the default keyboard.
FYI. You have to uninstall v2.x before installing v3, otherwise it just stays version 2.x. You're also supposed to uninstall Swype Installer, but I didn't find that to be necessary.

Thanks. Your directions were exactly what I needed. Using version 3.5 to write this on my Captivate.
heres instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123811
I wish the suggestion bar was kept open... like how the default android does. Because the poping up and down gets to you after a while. Maybe I type too slow haha.

I came here with exactly the same complaint, haha. I hate how the text box keeps jumping around, it makes it harder to keep an eye on what you're typing
Otherwise, I'm loving the new beta. Switched to the Swiftkey beta a few months ago but Swype now doesn't type 'buys' every time I swype 'bus' so I might switch back

I did just fine removing just swype. I ran the installer and it looked for and downloaded the new version.
The only thing that annoys the hell out of me is how the cursor automatically goes to the end of the word instead of where you tap for it to go.
yea you can uninstall/reinstall if you have the 2.x beta :x..
Loving this new one.. the word list isn't as intrusive although word suggestions auto replacing what I wrote takes some getting used to.
Loving the new swype.
Don't forget to skin it
Swype skins by esk02k.

MUCH better.
I'd stopped using swype just last week, and switched to slideIT demo to see how that was. Was actually quite good, except for how difficult it was to use punctuation keys. Swype's implementation of that is very good.
My biggest problem with swype was that stupid annoying pop up screen saying something about a hidden word.
I'm not sure if Swype does this, but I certainly don't think it did before, was suggest words based on how often you use them.
But yes, overall very happy now.
Also at the end of my SMS, if i type for example "330" and click send... it seems to type 330 and leave it there for the next message to send again... not sure if I explained that well.
For example "meet you at 330" > Send (without clicking the suggestion for 330 on the bar.. just using what you typed that came up"
then it will have 330 there for the next message, which i then have to delete
Doesn't seem to happen every time, but it's happend enough, and seems to be mainly on words/numbers not in the dictionary

Yeah I know what you mean. When you press and hold to insert characters at the end of your message, for some reason it leaves those characters there even after you sent your message.

Can anyone tell me if Swype works with the Thunderbolt? Tried it a few months ago and it didn't. Can't find anything about update saying it supports it.

Keyboard dock

I know there have been a couple of posts dotted around asking about the keyboard dock but I've seen nothing definitive.
I have the dock and it worked great with Honeycomb. I neglected to think about how it would work with a custom ROM before flashing one.
I've gone for the CM9 ROM and although generally typing on the keyboard works it is far less functional. The majority of the (very useful) hotkeys don't work.
Including:
Home
On screen KB up/down
Menu
Play/Pause Media
Makes the whole thing far less useful :-(
I'm interested in if anyone knows anything I can do to make this better on CM9 or even if it's likely to work better with any different ICS ROM?
Yes, the keyboard dock hotkeys don't work, all except the back key. But even more annoying it is that the software keyboard shows up and it shouldn't.

I do not have a genuine Samsung keyboard (yet) but you should be able to map home, menu and the media buttons with my app: http://www.apedroid.com/android-applications/external-keyboard-helper
You can also specify up to 16 apps and create shortcuts for them. For example you could start the browser with Alt+B and Gmail with Alt+G if you want to.
Yep
I remember that happening occasionally before but it's constant now and even more inconvenient without the convenient hotkey to hide it.
Can I assume this is pretty constant regardless of the ROM used?

Yes I think so unless it is a HC rom based on a stock ROM.
I'll fix some of it in the CM9 port once I recieve my BT keyboad case and have something to test with. If you just want to get rid of the on-screen keyboard you can use my free app that does that and nothing more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperfree
If you want full control you need my paid app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Free demo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperdemo
Thanks for the advice. Your app looks really helpful.
I've no problem buying the pro version but want to have a play with the demo one a little more first.
I'm having slight issues trying to map a few things:
App switching: can map keys to this but doesn't seem to do anything
"Internet" / "Mail" - these two keys aren't picked up by the mapping config as they immediately jump away launching the browser (I'd love to remap to chrome) or asking me whether i want Gmail or Mail (and not remembering my selection)
I've mapped home (hooray!) but although it takes you back to the launcher it doesn't necessarily take you back to the default screen as the onscreen home button does (that's a really small issue!)
Any thoughts about those?
On the subject of the demo version of the app... Is the only thing that's different between that and the pro version that the spacebar is mapped to: _This_is_a_demo_version!_?

The problem with keycodes is that some are handled erlier in the input queue before I can process it in my app. App switcher and Home is two examples. I managed to do a workaround for Home but I have not yet found a way to bring up the app appswitcher programatically.

Same reason here. Android propably picks up and processes these before the app get a chance and therefor the scancode is never passed on. However, when I get my BT keyboard dock I can investigate this more.

This is due to the nature of the workaround. I just launch the launcher which gives almost the same effect as when the system processes the Home keycode (apart for the difference you noticed)

The versions are identical apart from the space button and some strings (demo vs pro, buy vs rate) so you can test out everything before buying.
You really should try the application shortcuts. Choose apps for A0 to AF and enter A0 to AF instead of characters when doing a custom layout. You could put the Email app on Alt+E and Gmail on Alt+G etc... Setting it up could be bit more userfriendly but once you figure it out it is not that hard to do.
Have got the pro version now and the overall effect is not much worse than the keyboard was under honeycomb so thanks very much.
Have setup a few short cuts (chrome and Gmail) and mapped them to some of the otherwise non-working function keys so that's great too.
