Keyboard dock - Galaxy Tab 8.9 Accessories

I know there have been a couple of posts dotted around asking about the keyboard dock but I've seen nothing definitive.
I have the dock and it worked great with Honeycomb. I neglected to think about how it would work with a custom ROM before flashing one.
I've gone for the CM9 ROM and although generally typing on the keyboard works it is far less functional. The majority of the (very useful) hotkeys don't work.
Including:
Home
On screen KB up/down
Menu
Play/Pause Media
Makes the whole thing far less useful :-(
I'm interested in if anyone knows anything I can do to make this better on CM9 or even if it's likely to work better with any different ICS ROM?

Yes, the keyboard dock hotkeys don't work, all except the back key. But even more annoying it is that the software keyboard shows up and it shouldn't.

I do not have a genuine Samsung keyboard (yet) but you should be able to map home, menu and the media buttons with my app: http://www.apedroid.com/android-applications/external-keyboard-helper
You can also specify up to 16 apps and create shortcuts for them. For example you could start the browser with Alt+B and Gmail with Alt+G if you want to.

Yep
I remember that happening occasionally before but it's constant now and even more inconvenient without the convenient hotkey to hide it.
Can I assume this is pretty constant regardless of the ROM used?

Yes I think so unless it is a HC rom based on a stock ROM.
I'll fix some of it in the CM9 port once I recieve my BT keyboad case and have something to test with. If you just want to get rid of the on-screen keyboard you can use my free app that does that and nothing more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperfree
If you want full control you need my paid app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Free demo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperdemo

Thanks for the advice. Your app looks really helpful.
I've no problem buying the pro version but want to have a play with the demo one a little more first.
I'm having slight issues trying to map a few things:
App switching: can map keys to this but doesn't seem to do anything
"Internet" / "Mail" - these two keys aren't picked up by the mapping config as they immediately jump away launching the browser (I'd love to remap to chrome) or asking me whether i want Gmail or Mail (and not remembering my selection)
I've mapped home (hooray!) but although it takes you back to the launcher it doesn't necessarily take you back to the default screen as the onscreen home button does (that's a really small issue!)
Any thoughts about those?
On the subject of the demo version of the app... Is the only thing that's different between that and the pro version that the spacebar is mapped to: _This_is_a_demo_version!_?

The problem with keycodes is that some are handled erlier in the input queue before I can process it in my app. App switcher and Home is two examples. I managed to do a workaround for Home but I have not yet found a way to bring up the app appswitcher programatically.

Same reason here. Android propably picks up and processes these before the app get a chance and therefor the scancode is never passed on. However, when I get my BT keyboard dock I can investigate this more.

This is due to the nature of the workaround. I just launch the launcher which gives almost the same effect as when the system processes the Home keycode (apart for the difference you noticed)

The versions are identical apart from the space button and some strings (demo vs pro, buy vs rate) so you can test out everything before buying.
You really should try the application shortcuts. Choose apps for A0 to AF and enter A0 to AF instead of characters when doing a custom layout. You could put the Email app on Alt+E and Gmail on Alt+G etc... Setting it up could be bit more userfriendly but once you figure it out it is not that hard to do.

Have got the pro version now and the overall effect is not much worse than the keyboard was under honeycomb so thanks very much.
Have setup a few short cuts (chrome and Gmail) and mapped them to some of the otherwise non-working function keys so that's great too.

[Q] Looking for HTC keyboard! (T9)

I've searched throughout XDA and can't seem to find a keyboard that I can install that brings back my beloved T9! Searching the market brings up little as well.
I just recently got CM6.1 + Kernel #43 (+ various other things) but before this i was still using MoDaCo's 1.5 ROM and although I love [almost] EVERYTHING about CM6 - I can't find a way to get the dial-pad keyboard with T9 for texting. I'm assuming it doesn't exist.
I just want to know what keyboard is good and simple and includes a T9 dialpad-style keyboard for portrait view. Preferably free... but not required.
Some keyboards I've heard of, but no verification of T9:
Smart Keyboard Pro
Swift Key
SWYPE

THANKYOU!
This is fantastic!
EXACTLY what I was looking for. I can type extremely fast now (even in the car... shhhh) and at first, I was glad to have to T9 back but the keyboard itself looked a bit goofy. Then I saw the 'AOSP generic look'; it is perfect.
Thanks so much!
Follow up
Ok - I had to follow up on this again after using the keyboard for a few days. I don't think I did it much justice.
This keyboard is incredible. Not only is it simple looking (although you can apply other themes if you wish), the customizability (is that a word?) is insane. I spent forever just going through and playing with all the settings. Sometime it takes a while since you have to kill the keyboard and wait a second for it to come back in a typing app to test it, then go back to the settings menu, tweak, rinse & repeat.
I was thrilled to see that there are custom smiles because when I do use the smilies, which isn't often, I don't like them to have the 'dash' noses (ex. ) I prefer the simple but maybe I'm just really picky. Having the customizable smilies is awesome. You could even just replace them with anything you use often. One downside however is if you add too many, they'll just run off the screen and you'll not have access to them.
The custom swipes is a nice feature as well. When you swipe along the keyboard in one of four directions, you can assign custom functions. I have my 'swipe-up' set to 'Shift' so I can get capital letters quickly. I know it doesn't seem quicker than pressing the shift key but it is for me. It just feels more natural too when I'm texting or emailing. You can even set a swipe to change languages , I think this would make multi linqual people very satisfied. Type BOOM Tipo BOOM 类型 BOOM Тип.
There are many other settings including the organization of buttons, word prediction and spelling settings, and much more. You can even save and restore settings!
Best of all... it's FREE!
Edit: Thanks again!

Thumb Keyboard 4.0 - Beta (upd. Beta closed)

Update may 23: The beta is now closed. Thank you all for your participation and feedback. Please keep your suggestions coming. Suggestions and requests are welcome in the Thumb Keyboard thread in the paid-for app forum here on xda (link will follow)
--------------------------------
New beta 4:
Customizable toolbar. The toolbar can be switch on or off with a simple toggle. For phones as well as for tablet (Gingerbread and Honeycomb have more functions to assign to the toolbar keys)
New small keyboard for one handed operation on a 10" tablet. It also contains a "blind spot" which you can use to hold your tablet.
------
Thrilled to announce a brand new version of Thumb Keyboard.
It's a total rebuild from scratch of the current market version, therefore I decided to launch it first as a public beta.
Besides a whole new core that is optimized for Gingerbread and Honeycomb, the new version (v. 4.0) introduces a whole lot of new features:
multi-touch
Correct previous written words with suggestions
Shortcuts - store and edit much written phrases, mail signatures, logins and insert them with a simple tap
New addition to the prediction algorithm: predict a word based on a previous word
New: resize the width of the letter keys on the split layouts. With the option to adjust the height, one can now adjust the keyboard completely to ones own hands and device!!
Alternative suggestions for voice input. Just tap on the recognized word to see the alternatives
Redesign of the keyboard based on multi-touch chording. Entering numbers and operating the cursor keys was never more easy!
New style popup keyboards. Fling, slide and wipe and back to typing again ..
New design of the keyboard layout. Easier access of much used keys
Better esthetic integration with Honeycomb by the use of Honeycomb style windows
and more (and still more to come
The beta can be downloaded from thumb4beta.blogspot.com
(Because the beta was already out for some weeks for 10.1" tablets, some may wonder why this separate announcement. The reason is that the current version will support all screen sizes and layouts, just like the current market version. This means a lot more devices to be supported and a lot more test cases)
Looking forward to your feedback, suggestions, comments, bug reports (hope none ) etc.
-----
Update (May 3):
Version 4 beta 3.2: added Custom portrait/landscape layout combination * Smiley popup keyboards now on all layouts * new theme "digital red" * custom keyclick sounds * better dictionaries * 12 extra shorcut or quicktext slots * Return key in instant messaging apps * option to exclude contact database from predictions * some bug fixes

Thought I've send you mail too. Let me know what you think about it.
Personally I think this is a BIG improvement over the version over the version on the Market. One of the things I liked about the stock GB keyboard was you could tap previously entered words and change what was entered. Love seeing that in here.
The only thing I don't see is being able to set different layouts for portrait and landscape. Being a phone user, I like that the hide keyboard button is hidden.
Big speed improvements as well. Great job!
Thanks going to give this a try!

Thanks! The ability to set different layouts for landscape and portrait mode will certainly come back. It's one of the core functioneren of this keyboard. I left it out just to have something to do while the beta is tested
If you are on Gingerbread or Honeycomb you should try out the bigram predictions (only English supported right now). It will predict in many cases the next word with the previous word and just one letter. For example if you type "of" and then the letter t you get a bunch of relevant words starting with a t and that makes sense as the next word after "of". Great feature for phones. (It will also learn from word pairs that are entered a lot)

Nice, I'm loving it so far, I've been waiting for something that actually *KNOWS* what you want type next and learns other than swiftkey. The only thing I ask you, is please give us the option to enlarge the spacebar by removing the smile faces, comma, and or period key.
Thank you, and how else besides the blog and this thread can I keep up with the latest beta releases?

The beta releases are all published on http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com
You can subscribe to that blog to get a notification when a change is made.
I've had a lot of downloads and yet no single bug report. I like to think that the keyboard is completely bug free, but that would be wishful thinking in the context of this giant project.
Any bugs? Please report them here or on the beta site.
I have found what I like to think is a bug.
Say I want to enter todays date. I long press the q for the number 1, the I select the "/" from the upper row and then I long press the t for the number 5. So far so good.
Now I want to enter a different date, like 29/5. I long press to get a 2, the I long press to get a 9. Now the upper bar is empty, and I can't select the "/" there
Another bug: I can't long press the p key to get a 0. All the other keys work.
And a little warning to Desire/Nexus One owners, if you long press the ?123 button while selecting a button on the lower row on the keyboard ( ! " ' : ; / ?), it will probably not work that well. It has to to do with the multitouch on those devices. It has to to with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhBRMaUn6Ig
If you want I can make a video showing all of these problems.
what about Portuguese - PT? Any plans on implement it?
very nice thank you nice sharing

I'm able to hold P to get 0. Using the standard layout.
After fiddling around with the different keyboards I got it to work too. After uninstalling and reinstalling however, it stopped working again.
EDIT: I found the problem, if I enable "long press for numbers and syn.." I can long-press P to get 0. If I disable it however it won't work.

Thank god a bug You are right, the standard-layout doesn't have a popup menu defined. Thanks for noticing. Will fix it asap.
Glad you sorted the other problem out. I couldn't reproduce it. In some cases the keyboard can act not as expected after a fresh install. In that case a simple, infamous reboot will fix the problem. (Seems like a general Android problem)

I use Swipepad.
Really awesome. Its free but for the addons u have to pay.
This one worked perfect in sgsII and my dell streak.
However in note u have to take a little more effort to initialize the app. i.e u have to swipe real carefully. U will understand it once u install it.
Another one is taskchanger pro.... Lots of good reviews ,
Easy to initialise the app but however did not work well for me in note. I had some glitches like app , restarts and looses settings and so on.
Try swipepad first .
visual task switcher doesnt seem to work on the note since it doesnt support 2.3.
but smart task switcher works well enough. not as pretty as visual task switcher but it does the job.
Swipepad looks interesting and I will check it out.
For some time now (both on my previous phone and now on the Note) I've been using Perfect Task Switcher and am pretty much happy with it.
I checked swipepad, it's nice, but it's mainly a laucher...the task switcher is an paid option, unfortunately.
edit: Task Switcher wouldbe Perfect if we could assign the double press to home button to lauch the switcher
Well, i tryed a few apps for task switching, and i don't find nothing comparable to my IPhone. So, i can stick to a non graphical app.
in addition, I cannot find one lauched with double press home button.
any help ? because i already regret Ios, despite the small screen

i dont think you'll be able to find one. i may be wrong, but iirc, double press home button is reserved by android. you cant really override it with software options. on my old atrix, i would just map the task switcher to the search button, but the note doesnt have the search button.
First of all - long home press = inbuilt task switcher. It's probably obvious but it took me a week and the manual to find that out, so chances are some people still don't know it.
For my own purposes I use Wave Launcher with recents on - this way I always have the access to all my most important apps + drawer + few last ones and this is spot on for me and works ALWAYS - no matter what app is in the foreground I naver had a problem of not being able to access Wave Launcher. I have been using PowerStrip for a long time for the same purposes but Wave is more natural.
The big advantage is the ability to access widgets this way - great if you need to for example change the screen brightness with SwitchPro while playing a full screen 3D game that hides the taskbar (so you can't use taskbar power controls). It works fine, apps don't crash.
I don't remember coming across any app similar to Multiflow but I must admit I was never looking for one because for me it beats the purpose - multitasking is all about efficiency, I need one gesture to access what I want. Double home + swipe + tap is too much work
Give it some time, it takes a while to find a perfect combination of apps to get that smooth user experience. I bet it took you a bit with iOS too.

long press home shows you your recent task list. it doesnt tell you which ones are still running. you'd have to go into the task manager for that.
and task switchers like smart task switcher show you what apps, background apps and processes are running as well and give you a quicker way to close them.
while it might not seem useful to some people, i found it quite useful on my motorola atrix since it would allow me to free up more ram before multitasking. i find that my galaxy note with touchwiz doesnt manage the ram as efficiently, so if i dont free up some ram, it will close some of my active apps to free up ram for the game or browser or app in the foreground.
Ur right. But I was under the impression that the author of this thread was looking for an easy way to multitask rather than to know what is running or not or easy way of closing it. I might be wrong, it's not 100% clear.
yeah I could be more clear because you may not know Multiflow on IOS.
It takes over original multitasking (which is not real multitasking by the way) and lets you leave running in background some apps that you can recall easily by selecting the thumbnail in an additional graphic viewer.
I don't really need a similar design, but i need to open and leave some apps running, and switch between them.
Assigning to long/double press home button would be great !
swipepad could be ok because of the swipe action to open it, but the switching function is a paid option that i cannot try before, so i will not buy.

Well, that's pretty much that Perfect Task Switcher enables you to do. Except that it's not bound to long home press, but just a single press.
So, here's how it works:
- when you install it you can configure in its settings (via the small gear icon that appears when it opens up) which is your preferred launcher;
- when you double-press the home button you jump to your home screen.
- when you single-press the home button the task switcher displays (in an overlay of whatever you are in at the moment) a graphical list of you currently running apps - you can switch between applications in this way.
hi 111bits
I tryed it already, but I don't get the same results as you.
I cannot make appear home screen by double click. nothing happens.
Then fo r the same effect, i have to click once, and touch home icon to do this.
why this double click dosn't work ???
And by the way, i have no preview in the multitask windows...

Remap Keyboard Keys

I have AOKP Milestone 6 installed and I love how it looks, especially the Hide Notification Bar option because it makes my TF feel more like a netbook when I have it docked. The only problem is that the long press shortcuts don't work on the keyboard (ex. long pressing the home key doesn't give me the recent apps menu, it just brings me to the home screen).
I was wondering if there was a way to re-map some of the shortcut keys in the top row (bluetooth toggle, camera, internet, etc...) to my own custom actions such as launching the recent apps menu, killing a window and bringing up the notification bar. I know it's possible to do this in Linux since I just did it for a remote that I use with XBMC (the remote emulates a keyboard), I just didn't know if they feature is extended to Android or not.
Sent from my TF101 using Tapatalk 2
its possible but not easy. Some things can be remapped in the users/ect files such as ausec.(c something) but other more complex things like recent apps have to be done in framework-res.apk as far as i remember
Check out /system/usr/keylayout/asusec.kl.
I'm not sure if you can map keys to specific things like killing a window or bringing up the notification bar. However, recent apps is accessible through alt+tab (try it!) and so you may want to swap the Search and Alt keys.
EDIT: Some useful key names to look for and replace:
ALT_LEFT: left alt
ALT_RIGHT: right alt
SEARCH: search key
FORWARD_DEL: delete, as opposed to backspace. not mapped to anything by default
ESCAPE: escape key. I have this bound to the wifi key because I always accidentally hit it, and sometimes escape is useful in terminals or remote desktop

Thats right usr/keylayout not user/ect don't know what i was thinking there. I know there is a way to exchange the stupid alt-tab icon recent apps to the cards recent apps but i don't have time to do that right now. I was also going to work on getting a guide set up on how to remap everything because it seems to be a pretty common desire.
Edit:
Found it

Thanks for the info guys, I'll give it a try! I definitely think I'm going to stick with AOKP for a while since it seems to give me the best experience since I've had my TF (over a year).

Is it possible to disable ALT-TAB (that switch android apps)?
I need this combination bee free for RDP.

[Q] what is most responsible for IME cursor precision?

Hi there, not sure what is the confluence of factors....
But I find it horribly nasty in Lollipop with the google keyboard to place my cursor by tapping text I am editing. It just doesn't go where my thumb and eye thinks it should. It is getting more and more annoying.
I used Smart Keyboard Pro in KitKat, and it had a "calibration" subroutine that I thought was responsible for hitting the actual keys, but do you think it also helped text entry selection?
Do IME rules govern the text cursor placement? I am now used to the google keyboard layout but find the precision horrid.
Thanks for any thoughts on subject.
Hah. Just tested Smart Keyboard Pro again... after calibrating. It feels like I can enter text again right away. It was very buggy during the Android version bump, but updates have made it work great again!
Now just another layout reconditioning....d'oh

Nope. All an IME can do is read what is in the text field (for correction) and what type of text field it is (plaintext, password, username, number-only, etc) through the system (not the text field itself), and tell the system to input keystrokes (it doesn't input them itself).
It has no direct contact with the text field itself.
A keyboard app is really just a UI and sometimes also a text corrector.
Hmmm. I wonder about how Smart Keyboard Pro works its "calibration"... and then I wonder why without fail, switching keyboard is letting me navigate the text field better.
Something in the story you give is missing perhaps. Text correction for instance indicates going "into" the text field...
I notice the little handle to drag the cursor also feels way less buggy. I was having trouble even grabbing the handle in Google Keyboard. It also looks like a different handle.
Maybe things have changed from KitKat to Lollipop....perhaps somehow related to not being able to use any alternative IME if the default IME was removed. I saw others complaining about that. Some input method functions that were "deeper than the IME apk" are now placed differently...
I am not a dev though and wouldn't know where to begin to look in version manifest to see this described.
It makes sense a keyboard app dev would try to make entry work better if they COULD somehow fool the screen to better "read my mind" which is totally the aim of Smart Keyboard Pro's calibration function.
Not saying you're wrong exactly, but curious because I'm always learning and enjoy understanding and my test has seemed to work in my favour!

The only thing a keyboard app can "calibrate for accuracy" is on the keyboard view itself, not the text field. Both the text cursor and text field are 100% handled by the system and in some cases the app you're typing in, never the IME application.
Okay, thanks.. hmm. What kind of system features may be responsible for precision?
There are "responsiveness" differences between kernels and ROM combos... but assuming I like my ROM and kernel, what kind of potential tweaks to settings might make the touch screen more snappy and stable for text editing?
I notice thermal throttling when using phone when charging definitely worsens ability to type. Way more lag.. for example, cursor will jump around. Key presses will hang.
Thank you @Lethargy for your time spent thinking.

I don't know what you mean here. It uses InputMethodManager/InputMethodService, and text fields are managed by TextView.

ROMs have no influence unless one has a terribly written feature which lags the entire thing. Kernels don't affect anything themselves either - the kernel settings do, which are also user tunable anyways (default settings on a kernel are usually just what the builder prefers themselves). Neither have anything to do with text cursor placement accuracy, and no ROM should be messing with how the IME works anyways as it'll cause problems for more people than solve.
And there isn't anything you can do to make it more accurate other than physically (via using a stylus or having smaller fingers), since each touch is registered on an individual pixel, not the entire surface area being touched.

Not necessarily thermal throttle. An IME will run fine on a Nexus 5 even if you underclock to 1GHz. More likely its just your CPU usage being high and the IME isn't as high a priority as what is keeping up lets say 75% of your CPU.
So perhaps I might have less lag if I overclocked a bit? I guess that is obvious...
Do you know of not too invasive methods of altering the IME priority or tweaking the touch responsiveness in general?
Also, I am being more careful about my large thumb's "one pixel" touch point, and I am noticing an improvement already.... although I had already switched back to the 3rd party keyboard which seemed to help right away with input accuracy.
I also found a google android issue with 51 stars regarding generally buggy input issues in the Nexus 5 on Lollipop... so I am not too crazy about noting my issue perhaps!
Thanks for your help in understanding IME, @Lethargy.

Overclocking might not help that much, and I don't know of an easy way to force priority.
I don't have such issues with any sort of IME, so it's likely a per-user issue rather than affecting everybody. I also use the AOSP and Google keyboard.
