update for GSM
hey!Im currently using this phone on a gsm carrier. .anyway i can update the phone directly by putting it in CDMA mode or something?Or do i need to wait for a RUU to flash? Thanks!
Has anyone been able to get the ota update from verizon ?
I went back to completely stock 4.4.4 rom with no system roms removed, stock 4.4.4 recovery and I flashed back to 4.4.4 firmware and the verizon ota updates keeps coming up that I have the latest software.
I know its out because verizon itself even shows it on the net going over the update in detail. They even show you can also get the update through the htc sync software by plugging your m8 in to yuour computer usb port and downloading the update. Which the htc sync software keeps showing no update either.
It would show a repair software option though which I tried that knowing I would still have s-off even if they did relock my bootloader because I could change my cid and use htc dev to unlock that if I needed to.
Anyone have any luck going back to stock and taking the LP ota from verizon ?

That would be most annoying if they did not. Seems like other handsets the same age have it. If this is a ploy by HTC to get you to keep buying phones I might reconsider another HTC..

The Lollipop update to the AT&T version of the M8 has VoLTE, indicating it's probably a carrier thing more than an HTC thing.
FoxFi
Does anyone know if FoxFi will still work after the Lollipop Update?
Has anyone actually received it? Droid-Life said it started rolling out last night.

Imagine Verizon ruining the experience.. like their bloatware lolz
I wonder since it has not been tweeted, and stated on the HTC site if vzw prematurely posted the update info page on their site?

Probably. HTC's update page still says that it's in the "3 - Certification stage of the Android Lollipop Release."
Although Mo Versi did say to expect it the first week of March. So must be close.
I just ordered an m8 from Verizon and I really hope it didn't come with lollipop.

Mo Versi replied this morning: "It's approved, you should receive the OTA soon. Thanks!"
Pretty sure one site saw that the lollipop documentation was up and just assumed the ota was released and then all the other sites just copy and pasted it and now its a runaway train. And it being approved is not the same as the update being pushed out. Pretty sure we got played as far as getting it today.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think you just got pushed the HSUPA update. This part of the file name, "1_84_502_11", matches my firmware number after the HSUPA update. I don't know what number was on the firmware before the update, but my firmware is 1.84.502.11 after said update. From what I remember, the file name is exactly the one I got when I checked for it after the update was officially released last month.
EDIT: Unless of course, I'm wrong, and that's a totally new firmware update. Though I haven't seen any info on any new firmware updates for us since HSUPA.

I got the push on this via wifi yesterday afternoon also. I was assuming that this was the update that would enable installation of non market apps but I was wrong. Anyone have any additional information on this OTA update?
Personally, I do not think this is a recent update as I have been running custom roms since I bought the device but had to revert back to stock because of a warranty issue that will require me sending the device back. I think it is an update that was missed in the timeframe from February launch up until about 3 days ago.

I just referenced those numbers to mine and it IS the HSUPA update. It wasn't released till late April, so it hasn't been out that long. I just don't know if you should install it. If your sending it back, and since you reverted back to stock, maybe you should try installing it.

I was at wendys today, used their wifi to check for the update and sure enough it was this same one. D/l'ed it and installed. My speeds went from 200kb/s to 500kb/s. That was just one test though
I just hope this doesnt effect rooting it in the future as i plan to do so.
Just got the Inspire for my wife today. Saw this update as well. She doesn't want me to root or flash anything yet. Wondering if it's ok to run this update without it affecting the ability to root and flash anything later.

Apparently there is an update AT&T is forcing that is causing massive amounts of phones to crash with a "No Sim Card Found, Restarting..." error message. Then you get "Emergency Calls Only".
I was told this by the in store warranty department at AT&T today when there were several people in front and behind me with the exact same issues. I reflashed, rebooted, got a new SIM card...nothing! Still here now with a phone that wont make or receive calls waiting for a new one.
The only fix AT&T is aware of? Get a replacement!
What update? Post a screen shot of your "About device".
Good luck with the replacement device.

My S4 automatically updated itself and removed my root access. I'm on NC1 and so far, its not that bad. Battery life did improve, but I don't like how the battery bar is white instead of green. At one time, my phone did the Emergency Call Only. But after I reset the phone, everything went back to normal.

You'd have to downgrade. It's easier to flash the 4.4 keeproot OTAs, the nb1 and then nc1, or even just a 4.4.2 custom ROM.

I could only delay the so many time that it finally upgraded this afternoon. I lost my root.
The only reason that I root is simply to be able to tether. I'm not interested in custom ROMs, etc. So, in my situation, is there a more direct (simpler) method to get me back to tethering on 4.4.2?
Thanks in advance!

Have decided to pick up an M8 and have been reviewing the process for unlocking the potential of the phone.. had a couple general questions about
If the phone comes with 4.4.4, is it still unlockable/rootable using the sunshine option? or am I out of luck?
Would there be a better chance to have an older version firmware if I pickup in store versus ordering it online from VZW?
I’ve been reading about how VZW likes to ‘lock down’ their devices using successive OTA updates.. If it comes with a newer stock firmware and I am unable to unlock/root, is it likely or possible in the future for it to become an option?
I appreciate your time and effort.
Cheers
Well-Some have had luck with unlocking with Sunshine http://theroot.ninja/index.html on 4.4.4 I was not able too- they are working on 3.0 version and they said this will unlock the bootloader and give you s-off. There is no ETA. Though, I read a post that said they were shooting for January 2015, but there were no promises.
The good news is that weaksauce 2 will give you temporary root. But you can not make any permanent changes/ using xPosed framework is a bad idea. However, I would try the current version of sunshine and give it a shot!
I was able to download a wifi tether app and got that to work. So, I am waiting for Sunshine 3.0 to drop!

I see. Well I certainly appreciate your input.
I know the newer versions of all the current flagship phones will be announced/released in the next couple of months and wanted to get a feel for people's thoughts on how this would affect current phones and the methods used to root/unlock them.
I guess the fact that a newer version of sunshine is in the works is good news.. I can play around with stock (assuming my phone comes with 4.4.4) until 3.0 sunshine hits.

Or you can just use viper4android, kill stagefright, and tell Verizon, "Thanks, but no thanks--I'm in this for _me_ now."

Pretty sure it's still 5.0. I don't think the S5 will be getting any more updates, it's at the end of its software cycle since 5.0, this update was only released for the stagefright fix.

No. Verizon's own custom OE1 is the reason that it's not rootable. Once you have the OE1 Kernel or higher, you cannot root unless they find another exploit. I doubt they will considering it's an older phone that's already being phased out in terms of support.

Take it back. You have a "new" phone that basically has no support for it anymore. If you have something to use currently other than the S5, I'd consider waiting till the new Google Nexus 5 or 6 2015 edition coming out this year. That should have root and an unlocked bootloader (Google wouldn't stand for Verizon locking down their phone).

You would have to find a phone you like, go to that forum, and check. I believe any phone with an unlocked bootloader can always be rooted? And I'm pretty sure the Google nexus 5/6 (the old ones) will always be rootable.
I'm jumping ship from Samsung (I wanted to move to the Note at one point, but Samsung screwed up big time with their phones trying to make it like an iPhone, and with Samsung/Verizon in bed with locking up root/bootloader).

There's a search bar at the top of XDA where you can enter a device. It also allows you to specify which carrier as well. This is from the M9 forum. Says you need a JAVA card which is expensive, but it unlocks the phone/allows root. You can also donate (usually $20-60) users to do it for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...t-s-off-how-root-s-off-verizon-m9-20-t3123178
I have no idea about the M8, seems to be the same, have to have S-OFF or whatever the heck that means. Do research yourself if you want the phone.

Follow the instructions in muniz_ri's thread. He hasn't released the deodexed version though. You should never take ota when rooted, and you should actually have it disabled as soon as you root. One user reported that they ota updated without losing root, but I'd never recommend it.
There is no benefit in disabling it. You have to authorize any update, so it cannot overwrite it on its own. The only reason to disable it is the popup after an update comes out which can be stopped by deleting the update.zip then having the install fail.
Two or three updates ago, I lost the ability to rotate my screen unless an app forces it to rotate, now with this update my phone no longer reads sd cards, and in fact boot loops if there is one inserted. I've done a lot of searching, both when the initial problem manifested, and now with the new problem, but haven't seen anyone with a fix. Any suggestions?

Not sure about either but you're probably better off using Google Voice for voicemail anyway. It's free, accessible on any device, and does text translations.

I've always wanted to try, but what if my Google Voice number is different than my regular phone number? I have them separate. Also, I wouldn't necessarily want to fully port my verizon number to google voice. Am I thinking too much into it?

That's what I'm doing. It's been a while, but essentially what you do is forward unanswered calls to Google Voice which takes care of the voicemail part. You can get voicemail on your phone through Hangouts or on any browser in Gmail or Google Voice. You might want to check out this link - https://support.google.com/voice/answer/165656?hl=en
Sorry for off topic :good:
Is it possible that MM will allow those of us still s-on and unrooted to root and s-off without sunshine? I was dropped from asurion nearly a year ago, so, if I'm going to buy sunshine, I'm going to wait till I get a replacement device. Hoping that I'll be able to root for free with MM though!

I've been trying to understand that page for the past 20 minutes... lol.
I thought our latest update with stage fright patch was 4.17.605.9. That official Verizon page shows two other versions...

Ah yes, the pre-update.
I can't wait. When Marshmallow comes out and a stock rooted RUU is released, I am going to do a factory reset and wipe within stock recovery as well. This will clean up everything, fresh NV partition as well as new radios.
Can't go wrong!!

VZW is typically noon EST or later.. and usually right on an hour.
Awwwwww man! Time to bust out Titanium Backup... or, wait... isn't that NOT a good idea with MM? What's the best mechanism going to be to back up my Lollipop system? I have a ton of apps that won't restore properly from the cloud, gotta manually back up.

I've flashed between mm builds a few times and I always have the play store download and install my user apps automatically as part of the first time initialization then I use tibu to restore their data. I restore very little system app data (just android id & sms/mms usually) I've never had a problem.
