AT&T forced update causing S4 to brick themselves. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Apparently there is an update AT&T is forcing that is causing massive amounts of phones to crash with a "No Sim Card Found, Restarting..." error message. Then you get "Emergency Calls Only".
I was told this by the in store warranty department at AT&T today when there were several people in front and behind me with the exact same issues. I reflashed, rebooted, got a new SIM card...nothing! Still here now with a phone that wont make or receive calls waiting for a new one.
The only fix AT&T is aware of? Get a replacement!

What update? Post a screen shot of your "About device".
Good luck with the replacement device.

That is for the international S4 9505. iB4 has built a ROM on that update for the i337/m.

My S4 automatically updated itself and removed my root access. I'm on NC1 and so far, its not that bad. Battery life did improve, but I don't like how the battery bar is white instead of green. At one time, my phone did the Emergency Call Only. But after I reset the phone, everything went back to normal.
I miss having a rooted phone lol.

My phone does the "no sim card found, restart" a few times a week...but its usually gone after the restart, occasionally ot takes a couple restarts...I am currently on nc1, however I have been experiencing this issue before I was even on kitkat

Will I be able to Re-Root?
I've delayed the update. If I am currently rooted, will I be able to re-root after this update?
Currently, I have:
Samsung S4 SGH-I337 (AT&T)
Android Version: 4.3
(more version details in attached screenshot)

You'd have to downgrade. It's easier to flash the 4.4 keeproot OTAs, the nb1 and then nc1, or even just a 4.4.2 custom ROM.

I could only delay the so many time that it finally upgraded this afternoon. I lost my root.
The only reason that I root is simply to be able to tether. I'm not interested in custom ROMs, etc. So, in my situation, is there a more direct (simpler) method to get me back to tethering on 4.4.2?
Thanks in advance!

You still need to do the downgrade, but you can flash a the stock ROM with root and tether once you do. No way around the downgrade to root yet.

I finally traded in my unlimited data plan for the 10gb family plan because it's cheaper and they allow tethering with it.

Im aware its a hardware issue, I was just stating my experience as the op claimed it was a new update that caused it, although that is perfectly understandable as he states the service rep stated this was the issue...but how often do those service reps reall know what they are talking about lol.
As far as taking it to a store...I have spilled water on the table my phone was on...and now my water indicators are pink, so I havent taken it in cause I figured they would deny me due to water damage even tho the problem existed long before that happened

I am getting the update as well now. I have delayed it but I need root and have unlocked the phone. 4.3 mk2. But I use mdl modem to access service mode.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Not while rooted....Can brick your phone I heard.
Do not update if u are rooted.
Well if you can't update while rooted, what are you supposed to do if it auto updates? I was just sitting in bed and noticed that my notification went off on my phone and not on my tablet (meaning not email). I checked the phone and if I hadn't noticed it would have auto updated and I am rooted on stock. It said the update would start in 3 minutes after I heard the notification. I deferred until tomorrow and have my phone how I want it, so I really don't want to go back to stock. I suppose I could make a nandroid.
It really scares me though that Verizon almost pushed an update that could have potentially bricked my phone. I don't think that is right, quite honestly.

Take VRBMF1 Update Before Rooting

I haven't been prompted to update to VRBMF1 yet and haven't manually updated. I am still on VRBMB1. Ready to try Beans' one click root method but not sure whether to take the update first or not. Anyone have any suggestions?
Pretty sure it'll work, it doesn't really matter if you're going to end up flashing a custom rom; but it's all preference maybe if you want the new modems just take the update.

Just root. The newest update had signal and battery issues, along with many other issues. Verizon even pulled the OTA. Flashing a newer ROM will give you the newer features anyways, and it will be better.

It was incredibly easy. Only thing that tripped me up at first was that I didn't have the Samsung drivers installed on my PC. Since the thread didn't mention installing them I was assuming they weren't needed. You can get them here. Once I installed them and went through the steps in the thread, I was rooted and unlocked in a few seconds.

Honestly I think what we have here is possibly an influx of users coming from devices like the galaxy nexus that were easier to modify. Lots of one click tools. This whole rock my moto thing for rooting 4.2.2 looked intimidating. Glad I was able to keep root with pwnmymoto.
I do think it's kinda funny. I had jelly bean and Google now since August 2012. Everyone of my friends this spring kept trying to show me the new features. I'm like Ahh they're not new! How are these people who manually updated and bricked their phones getting replacements? Must be bc of the non rooted folks who bricked just by simply updating. Either way I'm glad it's covered.

If you're attempting to flash the update manually you must do so twice. The first pass will update the bootloader and recovery perhaps a couple other smaller things. Regardless the main update is the second pass through. If you haven't applied the update twice from your SD Memory you can likely repair it yourself. Worst case just run the 4.4 sbf...

Yes, if you took the 4.3 OTA and try to flash an older stock build, you will brick your phone. As it stands right now, if you took the OTA you can root it, but you are still stuck on that stock ROM.
What would happen if we managed to flash a stock ROM like 4.4.x? I've seen so much talk about going backwards, they've locked us out of going backwards so let's go forward...maybe.

As of right now if you took the OTA update to Android 4.3 your hopes of doing anything custom other than rooting your phone are hopeless.
In order to flash a ROM such as Android 4.4.X aka KitKat you need a custom recovery manager. To be able to flash anything the first thing you need is an unlocked bootloader. The OTA update has locked the bootloader down so that you if you were to try and install CWM or TWRP recovery as soon as you boot into recovery mode you are going to get a Yellow Triangle that says "Verizon has detected unauthorized software on this phone, please turn off your phone and take it in to your nearest Verizon Store.
If you turn off your phone and power it back on you will keep getting that message...
The only way around it is to boot into Download Mode -> Vol Down + HOME for 2 Seconds then hit Power (if i remember correctly). After you boot into download mode you can then boot your phone back up regularly.
If you have made the mistake of trying to put a custom recovery on your phone you can put the stock recovery back on your SGS3 (stock recovery is better than no recovery) by downloading the recovery image and overwriting your custom recovery with the command "dd" in Android Terminal Emulator. For this to work you must be rooted.
Here is a link to the tutorial which shows you how to write the stock bootloader and stock recovery back to your Verizon (d2vzw) SGS3 in case you have made this mistake...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
In that thread pay close attention to the 2nd post as it shows you the commands to use to write your stock recovery or stock bootloader back to your phone.
I know it sucks that we can't put custom ROM's or a custom recovery (this hurts the most!) on our Verizon phone for now at least...
COME ON VERIZON EMPLOYEES! LEAK THE UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER! WE WONT TELL!
Maybe we will get lucky and some international version will come out and we can use that...
I remember awhile back that ASUS locked their bootloader on their Transformer tablet and you could request it from ASUS and they made you fill out this form saying that you understood by unlocking your bootloader you could not make a claim for a warranty. Why can't Verizon do that!?
I pray someone works this out eventually...

That would still require you to have a custom recovery. Also that would still most likely brick your phone cause the only 4.4 ROMS are AOSP based, meaning it installs a different kernel than the stock one. Thus when when the phone would boot up it would check the the kernels signature and would brick upon not finding one.
So I guess all hopes of finding a way around this are hopeless...for now. If u remember, a few months ago, President Obama signed a bill for Verizon Wireless to monitor all cell phone activity without the consent of the user, in conjunction with the NSA. I suspect that this is the reason why only Verizon has opted to completely lock down the bootloader because it contains code embedded in the bootloader (or partitions pertaining to bootloaders, aboot, and such) that allow National Security Agencies to implement spyware and tracking or listening programs. This is a testament to the sub-communist movement that is slowly taking hold in this so-called "free" society that was brought forth by our forefathers.
But back on subject - I just upgraded from a HTC Thunderbolt to SGS3 because most development for the Thunderbolt was few and far between. Upon purchasing my shiny new device, this Abomination of Android that is 4.3 was already being OTA'd. Had I known then....man, had I known then. It's a sad time for superusers all-over Verizon's crummy wireless empire.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Is there anyway you could post the link for the safe strap recovery option? I am rooted on 4.3 but I want a recovery that may work so that if this thing gets cracked be that much closer to freedom.
Verizon is doing us like Andy Dufrane...locks us down forcing us to tunnel a hole in the wall and crawl through 3 football fields sh!t to free!

Safestrap is not available for the s3. It would have to be ported.

You might still be in your window to return the device. Don't they give you like 30 days to try it out and if you don't like you can return for free and try another?

Probably not, it's a 14 day return window now.

They do have safestrap for i535 for people who have the 4.3 OTA update. I have been looking for a TouchWiz based 4.3 rom to flash in safestrap but have not been successfull. I would love to find one.
I've looking for one and I bricked my phone twice. It looks likes it's going to be a min before we see one.

And most of them say specifically that they are for unlocked bootloaders or not compatible with safestrap. Is there some trick I need to know to flash these roms in safestrap on 4.3 with a locked bootloader?

AT&T G2 Not showing 4.4 update?

Just bought this phone and I know that AT&T has rolled out the 4.4 update. According system this is still on 4.2.2. But system update says I am up to date, as does LG pc suite.
How long does the rollout take or am I missing something

are you on the Q firmware? if not you need to call AT&T and have them push that and then you should get the kitkat update
You can always use flash tools to flash the current 4.4.2 build, however you go back to stock
Saves an hour talking to ATT
Yes most likely you are not getting the Q update and 4.4.2 won't update without it. I flashed/OTA several times now and both times I had to call AT&T to have Q pushed. The other updates push out fine from AT&T though.
Yeah, not on "q". Well that's annoying. Talking to ATT is like pulling teeth sometimes.
Thanks for the help all

Seems that you really need to call AT&T to get the Q update so that you would be able to update to KK.
I'm on D80010q
I'm on D80010q now but I still cant update KK, it said my phone not registered at the first time i check for update and the next time, it said my phone up to date, when i went to ATT, they said I should have to wait for like 2 weeks....

I've seen some say if you bump your time up 24-48 hours and check again, you may get the update.

Better off using a custom ROM, unless of course you prefer the dull stock ROM. KitKat is no better in my eyes, little snapier.
