why not waterproof? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Is anyone else here asking why the S6 is not waterproof? not only the S5 was, which was amazing for using it in the shower, the beach, the pool, or even to answer a text when washing the dishes, but now that the S6 doesn't even have a removable battery and can easily be sealed - it doesn't have this feature. makes me think samsung is just ''saving'' features so when the S7 is announced you'd be willing to sell your S6 for it.
thoughts?

The S5 needed a flap to cover the USB port... so my guess would be that the USB port on the S6 can't be easily waterproofed...

Leave place for the S6 Active with waterproof, microSD and switchable battery.

If you think about it, thought it was a good feature, I think waterproofing a phone is one of the least needed features. I'm sure the phone is water resistant to some extent even though they never mentioned it

People were complaining about plastic, Samsung changes it to glass, now people are complaining about the glass...can't satisfy anyone
I think the Glass back is a more premium change than the plastic and a good one....most phones are not waterproof and most phones are not taken underwater
I did like the Water resistant feature of the S5, but just because they take it off its nothing to get all upset about really...get a waterproof case

although i can't speak for everyone, i think people would have preferred a metal frame, water proof and a plastic removable backing. not even an iphone has a glass back. the back of a phone doesn't necessarily have to be glass for a premium build phone.

Because waterproofing adds bulk. Samsung's main focus with the S6 was elegance.

How do you explain the Sony Xperia Z3 then? That phone is nearly a year old and has FULL WATERPROOFING, it's IP68 rated. Also made entirely of Unibody glass and metal. Samsung dropped the ball on this feature. I have an S5 and although I don't wash my phone everyday or take it into water, it is good to not have to worry about it getting wet.
I'm guessing that the S6 is just a change in design and we will see the S7 with waterproofing, or maybe an S6 Active model?

that.
it's just a game of money to them..why make a perfect phone instead of just a good one that people will eventually replace..?

How is the S5 bulky its waterproof? for a phone this expensive it should had all the features S5 had IP class, swapable battery and sdcard slot, it has neither of that, and the worst part they decided to use glas on the back it looks awful and in the winter glas is just not very nice compared to plastic its more durable and feels better samsung now is like an iphone so lame... the s5 is ten times better phone compared to this piece of crap..

You should probably check the Z3 section of the forums. There's a ton of people who tested out the waterproof capabilities of the phone, only to have it die on them near immediately. Apparently Sony is having issues making the glass panel adhesive seal well enough to ACTUALLY be waterproof.
Not to mention the issue with the magnetic charging port actually tearing out of the phone with minimal force.
For the record, I'm not a Samsung fanboy, I'm usually pretty anti-Samsung. I wanted the Z3 pretty bad, and was convinced I was going to get it. Depending on root/bootloader, it looks like I'm going S6.

oh ok, didn't know Sony wasn't as advertised. I guess my S5 is great then, I've submerged it and washed it in my sink many times.
I"ll wait on the G4 and Z4 until I decide to get an S6.

sony got sued over their wording on the Z phones. its water resistant not waterproof.
also common sense applies, obviously if theres a port open or some other way for water to get passed the seal the phone is going to die.
same with the s5, once ur usb port cover doesnt seal all the way your phone losses its water resistance rating.

If the headphone port doesn't need to be sealed, why does the USB port? I'm just guessing, but the flap is to keep the port dry so you don't short it out by charging it after using it in the water, I bet the phone itself could easily be made waterproof without the flap.

I doesn't. Galaxy S5 Mini has a Micro USB port that is not sealed and the phone is still waterproof. I guees that the USB 3.0 port of the Galaxy S5 is the reason is needs the cap. Or they may have simply improved the port between Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S5 Mini.

I'm sure there's a very logical engineering explanation for this. If they could have done it at a reasonable cost, I think they would have. The reason they don't have it is most likely due to some sort of engineering obstacle they haven't yet figured out. For instance, the glass back is used so they could add in wireless charging - which you can't have if you have a metal back.

Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3+/Z4 are all fully IP68 certified. Therefore waterproof in the proper meaning of it.
I myself never had any problem with the waterproofing of my Z3 Compact, and I bought it on day1.

[VIDEO] Samsung Galaxy S5 Water Damaged - QI Wireless Charger

(forward to 1:16 if you just want to watch the underwater video)
The only reason I pulled this out of my thread is to make sure it is visible. The question arose whether or not an aftermarket QI receiver will cause the Galaxy S5 to leak water. The answer is in the video. You can actually hear the phone start to malfunction. I knew this was a high risk trial. It was a gamble and I lost. Well technically my wife lost. She now hates the Note 3 I have her using .

If you look at the picture above, you can see the smooth path around the inside of the device that the seal on the battery door matches up with. Sometimes you will notice air bubbles come out of the phone when you submerge it. This is probably because water is allowed to get into areas up to the seal.
Now look at the QI receiver pad's ribbon cable that protrudes on the top left. One of the QI prongs is located within the seal path. Naturally the ribbon was in seal path as well. In addition to this, the small amount of bulk added under the cover could have been just enough to affect the small seals. Perhaps you could cut the ribbon ever so slightly, and do other modifications to make the pad thinner. Who really wants to do that and re-perform this test though?
I am definitely not accusing Samsung for any failure on their part. There are articles about the S4 Active having issues and AT&T doing on time courtesy replacements for those devices (unmodified). I checked with AT&T for S&Gs to see if there were any reports of S5s with issues. They said no. Only time will tell. This is not a warranty issue anyways because I modified the device.
The setup was tested with in a bathroom tub with the device off earlier in the day. It passed. No water seeped past the door seal. I should have tested it a few times at various depths up to 12" and moved the phone around to encourage water to get in. Starting at 1 second, 5 seconds, 10 seconds etc. Small tests would have minimized the amount of water that could have entered the phone without detection.
My recommendation is to not use the device on purpose for underwater photography. Take measures if you are going to be in an environment which could potentially result in your phone getting wet. Make sure all the seals are in tact and do not press buttons while the phone is submerged. It might not be a factor but why try?
If you ever notice water getting into your phone, no matter what make or model, turn it off immediately, take out the battery, and inspect. Upon inspection, should you notice any moisture, dry the phone for 24-48 hours at a minimum. This phone DID NOT die immediately. It actually just got worse over time. I should have dried it for about half a week I'm thinking. Remember, it's not really the water that does the damage to the circuitry. It's the electricity that is running though the water and shorting out components. Water seeping into the display probably isn't good in general but just trying to make a point. Initially it was only the home button that was malfunctioning (registering as being pressed the whole time). Screen was fine and everything. Then it had problems turning on. Hours later, when it did turn on, the screen was going. Hours after that, the screen would not turn on at all.
Please like the video and subscribe so my wife doesn't kill me...
**ADDED**
Underwater wireless charging . Explains where the water probably came from and demonstrates the failure.
The S4 Active actually has a snap in the center of the device. Your S5 does not. Just a random tidbit.

Thank you for confirming what was already highly speculated to be the case. Unfortunately your efforts will not stop the slew of idiots who think their 3rd party Qi receiver hack will still leave their phone IP67 compliant.
It's a shame the official wireless coVer is in such short supply.....

True but it's also a shame that they always make the phone thicker. I purchased one for the S4 just to give a little feedback and never used it again.
If some people got them and did a case compatibility thread, that'd be nice.

The oem cover is only good if you don't intend to use a case, there is quite a small percentages that don't use cases, and many case manufacture won't make one case in two size to accommodate the two sizes of covers.
This is probably the first phone to support wireless charging with IP67.

It will be good, but it doesn't seem like they will with their past experiences, the market is too small to open a production line.
Why would anyone be surprised about this outcome. Pretty expensive lab experiment too. That had fail written all over it using a 3rd party device like that. I would not try underwater video even with the stock phone. I think the intention of making this phone IP67 rated was more for the accidental toilet, sink, pool drop, etc. If you want to do underwater video I would suggest getting a GoPro.

I agree on this, the ip67 is only for safety measures and not for anyone to put into water on purpose.
Thats why when members asked me about ip67 in my post regarding qi receiver, i just totally ignore them.
So you added thickness to the back cover using the qi receiver and say the phone is water damaged. Why didn't you test it with the official samsung qi enabled back cover?
Because I make Youtube videos? I was 75% sure that something was going to go wrong. I could live with the outcome. If you can't, don't even try.
Have you ever seen drop tests?
- Added underwater charging video which also shows about how much water gets in with an aftermarket wireless pad stuffed under the cover.
- Added picture which illustrates what was probably worse than the ribbon cable being in the track of the seal.
I believe the S5 Qi OEM cover will not make the phone thicker. Here is the link and quote for the S5 cover:

Ahh got it. Thanks! I have been watching threads and I totally missed these pictures.
Well, agreed that this is unfortunate (but in hindsight, expected).
Looks like it adds camera protection thankfully. I'm loving my Ringke Slim though so I'll have to decide. I have the black cover coming.
I guess the only real perfect solution is to have the QI capabilities built-in so that variances like this don't happen.
Thanks again and I'll check the thread a bit closer and see the comments, etc.

Welcome...
I was bored so I threw another device in the water. Nano coating... I like...
Unfortunately I learned this the hardway today I forgot the qi pad would probably not allow the seal to complete and now my phone is in a bag of rice sitting on the window sill hoping and praying, I also oredered a new battery in hopes to fool the at&t associate into thinking it is a manufacturer malfunction fingers crossed
Oh no my video was pointless. Jk.. Sorry to hear that though. The longer you can wait the better.
Don't blow into the phone either thinking you can get the water out. You'll probably just push it deeper.

slippery Z3, now glass scattered after drop

My new Z3's glass is scattered. You all now the Z3 is so slippery. I ordered a case already and it should arrive this week, but yesterday it fell of the couch and now my glass is totally broken. I can fix it for more than 200 euro. Vodafone says it is my own fault and this is not included in the guarantee. I thought this was gorilla/armored glass and this phone would stand a drop of 30cm onto carpet?
Any idea's how I can get this covered? At Sony?
Please post questions in the Q&A section

Slippery indeed, but I'm afraid this might be a tough one as it actually fell down.
Mine fell a few times as well already (now really have it in my system to check where I put it instead of the arm rest of the couch for example) but without issues. And well, any glass can break... Sometimes it takes a few tries, but it has to fall and land bad only once to make a mess of it.
Anyway, hope you'll get it sorted... I know sony repaired some Z2 'spontaneous broken screens' but not sure about this one.
Nothing other than insurance will cover drops, unless the company themselves specify it.
I don't think its the fact that the Z3 is slippery. You put it on your couch. Most of the complaint about the the Z3 being slippery is about holding it with the hand.
Anyway, unless you put insurance on it, you are so out of luck.

No it isn't to be honest, the Z3 has a nasty habit of sliding when put down somewhere. When you put it on a flat surface (such as a table) which isn't perfectly level it actually slides off, very slowly. It's like a little hovercraft or something... Quite annoying and I've had it sliding off object a few times as well already.

Exactly, even on a flat surface, it moves! I showed it to my son as a magic trick! Now the trick is fatal!
A couch is not a flat surface. The material makes a difference. Glass on table could move depending on what the table is made of and how it is shaped. But it isn't adviseable to place it near the edge of any table regardless of what phone it is.
I think placing the blame on Sony's design in this case isn't justifiable and I don't even like Sony's practice (advertising waterproof with people playing in water but not covering it under warranty. DRM on camera....) There is an inherent responsibility of each users to keep it out of harm's way such as keeping it out of your pocket when you are playing sports, away from edges, etc. Everyone knows that Xperia is plated front and back with tempered glass. Glass breaks with impact.
Digressed there but to answer you: either you pay for the repair, attempt a DIY, or trash it and buy a new phone because what occur will not be classify as manufacturer defect that is cover. Don't think there is a 4th way.
A couple of days ago, the same thing happenned to me. I accidentally dropped the phone while walking on the street and it hit the curb. When I picked it up the back glass was shattered.
The phone had one week (and I had been offered 3-months free insurance, but I didn't take it). So I assumed this would cost me quite a bit.
Today I visited the official repair service in my city and was told that the repair would cost me 60 eur and about 40 minutes. I'll have to wait because they don't have the part in white, but it was a relief, I was expecting a higher price.

You could just buy a case for it (I got a nice one off ebay for £2.99), stick a screen protector on the back to hold the glass together, and stick it in the case. Doesn't really matter if the back glass is broken then, does it? Lot cheaper than 60 euros!

Not looked too closely, but is the glass part of the waterresistance or is it on top of the case? There's a pressure check you could do if that's the only reason you're getting it fixed.

Besides, I don't believe it's fragile. It was just bad luck. I've owned a Z for a year and a half, dropped it several times (some without case) and never got damaged.
I have my phone repaired, well actually it couldn't be repaired and Sony gave me a new one. Yep, they GAVE me a new one. I didn't have to pay a thing for it. I was in doubt whether to mention this, since more people could claim this althoug every scenario is different of course, but I do post this since I think this is great service by Sony! I really want to thank them for this!!!
I no whave my smart cover from Sony, the SCR24, and oh my God.... this is great! The phone, the cover, the service.... I am a big Sony fan!!!!

Good to hear! Congrats
Then again, the phone IS slippery. I have noticed it many times on tables which werent totally levelled for example. It just floats to the edge, very slowly... So it's not really a user mistake here.
Anyway, I have a screenprotector on the back now and that also helps with the slippyness
Thnx. Yes, not really a user mistake but I could imagine that other companies would have let me pay. I know have the Sony SCR24 cover, so the slippery problem is solved.

i was lurking around the Z3 forums to search for some topics related to the fact that my brand new Z3 frontglass + digitizer was broken a few weeks ago.
I cannot proof that the damage wasnt my fault ( or is ) so i sent the phone to GSMWijzer (The Netherlands) to let them investigate it ( probably went to dynafix ). They told me that after their findings they would inform me whether i have to pay or not.
Today i got my answer??? GSMWijzer mailed a track & trace nr for a brand new Z3 !!!
I am really happy that whoever made the decision to let this one go under guarantee , delived such good service!
I mailed them to thank them and also asked for some explanation why the decision was made to send a new Z3 and also to clarify the reason to charge no costs at all.
I they mail anything usefull which can help future Z3 victims then i will post it here.
For now: i agree with the topicstarter: YAY for Sony !

You have guts, I didn't dare to ask why they gave me a new one, since I was afraid it might be a mistake and I had to pay anyway. I thought that not only my glass was broken, but also my whole phone didn't work anymore, they gave me a new one. But then again, they could have charged me for the glass only? Or Sony accepts the slippery issue and therefor refunds it? Anyway, more than a million thumbs up for Sony!
these phones slide like no other i have owned for sure , put a super thin tpu case on it and it will stop , i cant wait till i get mine , the phone in just over a week has slipped off my leather sofa , my bed stand on vibrate it will run away from u lol i put a anti car dash slip on my couch where i sit it mostly till i get the case tomorrow smh

[Q] Best case for Note 4 with Samsung Qi Charging back.

I have a note 4 and tech21 case. It's a nice compromise between thickness and protection. It has a nice texture that makes it easy to grip. Sadly it's incompatible with the samsung qi charging plate which is slightly thicker.
Any recommendations for a note 4 case that is compatible with the samsung charging plate?
Doesn't (and highly likely will never) exist. I would love to find one, but no one builds a case to accommodate the backplate just for the Qi charging. On all my previous phones, I had to go the route of using the cheap chinese insert behind the stock backplate. If you do find a solution, post back please - thanks
For past models there has eventually been a Protective Cover Plus that fit, but it won't be out for a while if ever.
I'm usually going without a case. If I am going to be on a job site where I don't have a need for wireless charging, I switch out the back and put on my Versus case. I've also got a qi receiver card to go in the case but it breaks tap to pay and charges slower. I've got a hopefully better one coming.
How about a bumper case?
Anyone have a nice bumper (around the edge) case for the note 4? Seems like pretty much any case without a back should be compatible the slightly thicker samsung qi charging back plate.

I thought exactly this....haven't bought a bumper yet tho. I've been using the rubber from my otterbox commuter for protection. There are a lot of bumpers on eBay I'm thinking of picking up one of the cheap ones to test with this backing.

Incorrect.
Diztronic made one for the S5: http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Flexible-Exclusively-Compatible-Wireless/dp/B00LLM9MQY
I'm sure they'll make one for the Note 4 within a month or two, it's the most popular Samsung phone now.

Honestly I hate cases. I wanted the original samsung charging back as i've always used the stick on kind for many samsung phones and have always found that you lose features, create bulges, and they don't always work that great. I have always battled with my hate of cases and my obsession with the newest phones. In the past I always sold my phones on the secondary market and wanted to retain their resale value. recently we went to the EDGE program because we have a family share plan. So my phones will simply be traded in to VZ. I checked with them on their condition requirements for traded edge phones and the consistent answer was that they didnt care about scratches and such as long as the screen wasnt broken and there was no water damage. so that made my decision EASY!. Original sammy back and NO ugly bulky case! YAY!. Insurance covers the accidental breakage issue.

This note4 is a thing of beauty, and covering it up with a peice of rubber simply makes it look like every other black phablet on the market.
I'm on the next program with at&t, and will eventually trade my note4 back in when another upgrade phone comes out. They also don't care of minor screen scratches, only broken screens and water damage.
Caseology case works perfect with the OEM wireless charging back. A little snug but can't tell when in hand.

No mods, straight out of box. The only thing I noticed that differed from the stock backing is that the case is a little tougher to get on...meaning you have to groove the plastic into the tpu a tad harder.

I had it for awhile (bought it directly from Ali Express). It works with the Qi cover, but otherwise I pretty much hate it:
1. It is a bit of a loose fit and the lip does not always go securely over the front edge of the phone.
2. The lip does not take into account the curved glass, so it's elevation over the surface of the glass is very minimal. I do not think it would provide any screen protection if the phone is dropped face down on the pavement (#1 contributes to this). This lip issue with curved glass seems to be an issue with other cases as well though.
3. Buttons are hard to press and identify by touch.
4. They placed and elevated Nillikin badge on the side of the phone that looks and feels like a button. What's worse it's located where power button would be if the phone was flipped upside down. This is extremely annoying because it makes it impossible to determine by touch if I am holding the phone correctly (and actually pressing a button).
5. The microphone holes, while aligned, create an echo when in speaker mode. Echo is bad enough to make the speaker mode unusable. I made the holes larger by using a red hot nail followed by some Dremel love. It fixed the echo, but it looks pretty ugly.
All in all, I am barely tolerating this case. Ali Express now has more bumper cases, and I ordered 3 different ones. At couple of bucks a piece they are pretty cheap. Hopefully at least one of them is better than Nillikin.

Man that's ugly. Spoils the beauty of the Note 4.
Sorry Dude.

The reason NOT to buy Gear 2 neo!

Hello there im gonna describe you why NOT to buy the gear 2 neo or any plastic smartwatch made by any inexperienced (with watches) company.
Yesterday night I went to bed wearing my gear 2 neo, my left arm was touching both the bed’s mattress and my body when I tried to move the arm.
(big mistake. Never move your arm that wears the gear 2 neo when you sleep! Seriously…)
I felt just I tiny amount of resistance when I moved my arm and I mean really really tiny, like you cant imagine how tiny this resistance I felt was, and the watch fell of my arm.
I thought the armband unclipped but actually the watch’s plastic armband holder broke off completely!!!
im uploading some pictures for you to see what exactly happened.

As you can see right now I am unable to wear my watch as the armband cannot clip on place
So I went to an official Samsung repair center to repair it.
They told me that it is not covered by warranty as the piece is broken and it didn’t broke by itself. So I have to pay for it, and the price for repairing the armband holder is…
(take a sit and hold your breath!)
280euro!!!!!
I mean come on the whole watch costs 200 euro maybe 180 now, but no they want 280euro to change the hole front cover with the lcd screen just because at Samsung they are stupid enough to decide making their watch armband holders made of 2mm thick cheap plastic and after that they wont cover it under warranty because I was stupid enough to trust my money at Samsung thinking that they can really make a good watch….
how can they not see that these tiny cheap made armband holders was just wrong choice and they are gonna fail hard very easily? How can they not cover this under warranty? Its not that I dropped my watch and crack it? What could I possibly do to break it that should be my fault for the damage and they do not cover it?
and further more why don’t they offer a cheap repair for this epic fail of their watch?
Now I got started take a look of another reason for why you should not by plastic watches from Samsung…
after about 7months of use take a look at the wear of its top plastic housing, all 4 corners have this kind of wear and it happened by the clothes I was wearing.
Does really Samsung thinks that by selling that kind of crap quality watches the consumers will continue supporting the company???
From the wear on the plastic body you can easily understand what kind of cheap plastic is used for the watch top cover and why it did failed.
Its not the first quality fail of Samsungdevices , remember the galaxy s4 and galaxy s1 bezel fail?
Gosh, this is a really sad event.. Samsung should have the basic sense of having the watch strap holder in metal or at least thick plastic..
Just checking my Gear 2 now and this one is metal..
Wait for the next watch release in coming month.. as i can say currently the best smart watch out there is the samsung one.

you probably mean it costs 1$ to permanently glue the strap on the watch.
assuming that you do know a lot about glues and plastic materials in order to pick the correct glue for the correct type of plastic that the watch has.
or else if you just pick a random glue you risk having the strap being detached from the watch while you wear it which would result a probable fall of the watch on the ground and a broken screen.
further more even if you do manage to stuck it forever with the right glue you are no longer able to change the strap if it ever wears out or gets damaged/cut off
and the reselling value of the watch has allready dropped to about 1/4 of the original cost.
and dont forget that you literally have no space to work on the watch and glue it together succesfully, these parts are tiny and you have to be an artist in order to succesfully stuck it together without
having glue all over the watch/strap which would make the watch unwearable just for the looks of it.
dont try to make it look like its not big deal.
its an epic design fail and it certainly does not happen on every watch.
i heard a lot of times of straps being detached from watches but the faulty part was never the actual strap holder on the watch.
if you want i can post you photos of my g-shock plastic watch which is made from a company that does happen to know how to make a watch and you will see what kind of support it has for the strap holders.
Same thing happened to my sons new watch the first week he wore it after Christmas. He literally wore it less than a week. The watch costs $129 new from Amazon. The repair was $161.78. After complaining they offered to fix it for $70. I said no thanks, mail it back- its not worth more than $5. Samsung is the worst. Their stuff is great when it works but if it breaks, throw it out.

after a lot of complaining, Emailing and talking on the phone with samsung they did after all replaced it for me.
but still there is another major issue, if you swear while you wear your watch, the charging pads will get corroded and eventually fall off.
they did replaced my watch due to this reason 2 more times and then i just realised that this watch was just hopeless and i sold it...

this whole thread sounds like a lot of complaining. i have a gear 2 neo along with 3 of my friends who also have the exact same watch and we have all fallen asleep with them on and none of us have had issues. I also know 2 people with the gear S, one works in an office and the other is a waiter, neither have broken and both are used daily. The corrosion of the pads on the back can happen, but if you know that youre going to be doing something that youre going to sweat profusely from, take it off.... This thread is pathetic and grossly one sided. Ive been wearing mine everyday for 8 months and its nowhere near the point of breaking from "the slightest movement" Also, timex, casio and many other brands of watches have been using hardened plastic cases for their watches for decades and they still do. I guess they havent seen the errors in using said material that youve seemingly found. Is it the best material in the world? No. But if the smartwatch was mate of metal, youd probably complain about the cost then.
edit: i also SWEAR alot when im wearing my gear 2 neo, to no ill effect
I do not wear my watch on a daily basis but after a few months of use I noticed that the charging contacts have started to corrode. This issue seems to be widespread and not unique to myself. For that alone I would also stay away from buying this model. If it is any help I noticed that it seems to be aggravated if/when you leave the watch charged for a long time. I think it has something to do with the contacts being loosely fitted and then there's some problem arrising from it. Anyways I just wanted to share my experience...
So what is the next best samsung watch to buy now?
thats just weird, i wear mine every day along with a few friends who have the same watch, and while my charging contacts are a tad scratched from having connecting and disconnecting, theyre nowhere near corroded. just odd. youre not an alien like found in james camerons sci-fi movies are ya? JK
and the best samsung watch on the market right now is the S2 sport. I dont know how i feel about the round watch face nor have i had any hands on experience with it, but its the top dog in samsungs lineup these days.
Shoot, I washed and dried mine on accident and it still works. I was shocked but pleasantly surprised
Sent from my ONE A2001 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I actually just had the same thing happen with the plastic case. I've had the thing for nine months and was really loving it. It's weird because I didn't hit it on anything. I was just walking to my apartment when I realized it felt loose in my sleeve, and I checked and it was broken. I have no idea how it happened, but I'm rather disappointed.

General Samsung vs. OPPO - Glass vs. Ceramic [Review + Discussion]

New generation flagship smartphones are coming with a wide variety of different body materials used. Most commonly for the back or full body of a phone are Plastic, followed by Glass, Metal, Ceramics and Leather. Each material has its specific characteristics to meet requirements, from flexible, to hard, to scratch- resistant.
The launch of Samsung’s and OPPO’s new flagship devices showcasing differences of materials used for the phone’s back. Whereas the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes as Glass back (Corning Gorilla Glass Victus), the Find X5 Pro’s back is microcrystalline Ceramic.
Glass vs. Ceramics
The main difference between glass and ceramics is that glass is non-crystalline while ceramic is crystalline. Silicon dioxide is the main component of glass, while clay is the main component of ceramics. Each material characteristic reacts differently to heating; Ceramic shows a better behavior on high temperatures than glass, which plays out well for the overall device temperature.
Vickers Hardness Scale: Ceramic 1200-13000 HV, versus glass, which has a rating of 600-630 HV
Due its complexity in manufacturing and material hardness, the cost for material- and production of Ceramics is much higher compared to Glass.
A look at OPPO Find X5 Pro’s Ceramic Back:
It’s said that OPPO found inspiration for the design from nature in that “there are no straight lines or sharp corners in nature”, with the intention to create the back cover as gentle flow around the camera lenses in a “volcano-like” form.
The design itself isn’t the challenge, but the production out of ceramic due to the material complexity. The Find X5 Pro is made of microcrystalline hot-forged at 1,000-degrees Celsius, which results in a fingerprint-resistant texture while making it twice as strong as glass, allowing a better heat performance.
The point: Ceramic cannot be formed like glass, its size shrinks after calcining it making it extremely challenging to achieve the required dimensions. OPPO’s engineers have invented a process which sees the ceramic rear panel carved with over 2,000 individual control points used to create its seamlessly organic curves.
A perfectly machined, premium ceramic rear cover takes five whole days to produce, with a yield of 97% compared to 87%, a completely new four-axis polishing process refines the machined edges for a smoother finished look, enabling a precision of up to 0.005mm.
My takeaway
Personally, I never used a phone with Ceramic for long-term, but all different devices made of Plastic, Leather, and Glass. Where Glass intends to break easily when falling, plastic proved its flexibility and saved me many repair cycles already. The last ceramic phone I tested was Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 4 with Ceramic unibody. Overall I had a great experience, the handset’s appearance was lit. Seeing OPPO’s dedication to the design and materials used for Find X5 Pro, I believe that it's not just one of these specials that brings flagship device users the difference, but makes it more premium than any other smartphone.
What about you? Glass, Ceramic, Plastic.. What's your fav.?
In fact I favor Ceramic, it feels a bit more premium to me and the increased scratch resistance is a big benefit, especially for the resale value as I tend to change devices quite often....
Downside is: Ceramic is heavier than glass....
But I would not go that far and buy only "Ceramic" phones, just too many other aspects are more important for me in a smartphone and in most cases I use a case anyway
I was planning to buy the s22 plus, however there's no stock available. I'm learning more about this OPPO Find x5 Pro, design looks beatiful but how is the update policy?

Yes, sure - there are so many other items within the phone having a big influence on weight (just bearing in mind the massive camera module of the S22U).
In fact I never found a comparison of a glass backplate to a ceramic one for a smartphone, so my comment on weight is rather a general one about the contribution of the corresponding backplate to the overall weight.

Agree with the premium feel and the proven scratch resistance of ceramic. Personally, I would end up buying an Otterbox since I always fall asleep holding my phone. I mean, who doesn't use a case nowadays?

OPPO's update policy for flagship is 4 years of security updates, and 3 major Android updates. Since it comes with ColorOS 12.1, you'd be good until about Android 15.
Good evening.
8 days ago I gave the s22 ultra and the main reason was the problem it has with the gps. I was bored waiting for an upgrade to solve it. I bought the Oppo find x5 pro in white. If we exclude the s-pen and the brightness of the screen in all other parts the Oppo is equally good or even better. For me the biggest advantages are the battery standby, it is the incredible speed of the battery charge and finally the feeling in the hand. It is more comfortable in the hand. I did not expect it.

I thought it would have a fragile feel to it, or a feeling of luxury since it was ceramic and was thinking it be best to cover up in a sturdy case or otterbox to keep it from breaking. Was the feeling of comfort from the size, grip, or ceramic feel?

I use case all the time so it is just the size that makes the good feel in the hand.Generally it reminds me huawei p30 pro which was really nice all around phone
I had an essential ph1 and it had a ceramic back with a titanium frame. That's my preference because it was built like a tank so I had little worry of going caseless. There's also something about the feel of ceramic were just by touching it you feel security and the premium quality that just doesn't apply to any other material.

I had an essential ph1 and it had a ceramic back with a titanium frame. That's my preference because it was built like a tank so I had little worry of going caseless. Technically, glass can also provide a premium quality, but I feel more secure with the ceramic as glass might break easily. Did you keep it caseless throughout your use? I'm a bit wary if I am not even using the silicon case.
Plastic back and sides/bezel. FAR more durable for drops and bumps. My old S3 and S4, and Note4 survived absolute hell at the hands of my friends' kids, as have my folks' S7 Actives.
Just about every glass phone ive seen has eventually had a busted screen or back...
Plastic constuction, removable battery, headphone jack and flat screens were IMO peak Samsung S/Note series, no stupid cases needed either.

Plastic is definitely a more sturdy option before they chose to explore other materials.
What did you think about the leather backed models?

I kept it caseless, used it off and on for a year and it still looked practically new when I parted ways with it.

never owned one so i cant say, i dont feel like it belongs on a cell phone, for durability and thermals. just seems weird.

Always the best case scenario, especially for buyers of pre-loved devices.
I get surprised to see the color of my phone when it is out of the case especially because I always have a non-transparent case on.

Good point. I like it better as the texture for cases - tablets or phones. As the actual back of the phone, meh. I mean, how do you even clean it?

yep, cases its fine, i usually have a folding leather wallet case for travelling.
i guess it could work as a slim case, but built on, no thanks.
Leave leather for cases, it's a consumable item long term.
Ceramic backed phones FTW! I love my S10+ 1TB. The white ceramic reminds me of a toilet top! :-D And forget about worrying about breaking it when dropped! It is heavier though.

Phone colors do not really mean as much nowadays since you can always customize phone cases. I am always with an otterbox so I rarely see my phone's color. I mean how can you? I just always look at the screen and not the back.
