Is there a Super Low Brightness Mode on this phone or on the International version? I could have swore there was such a thing for the HTC ONE M8... Thanks in advance.
The closest thing I can think of is the "brightness settings" component of GravityBox (a Xposed Module)... I don't know if they work, as I have never fiddled around with them, but you could always give them a go.
I use the app called night mode to do this as well
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pt.bbarao.nightmode
I use Lux Auto Brightness (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vito.lux). It's the best automatic backlight adjustment app I've used (I had some problems with running out of memory on my Galaxy Nexus, but no such problems with my M8). It lets you set the backlight so low the screen is almost black.

Just wanted to say thanks guys! all these are great workarounds. I thought I saw a sense feature for Super Dimming mode or reading mode like the S5.

This app hasn't been working for me. It doesn't change brightness regardless of the light in the room. Yours has been working fine?
Yeah it's been working great for me. Are you using a screen protector? Lux relies heavily on the light sensor on the front of your devices (which on my M8 is seemingly infinitely better than my Galaxy Nexus was). A screen protector can interfere with the amount of light the sensor collects and mess up the very sensitive Lux app.
Is it me or the Ambient Display option is missing from LXR21O factory image?
I notice that in ASOP, the ambient display is available in the display option.

If you used the -w to flash the factory image then that could be your problem.

Ambient display is designed for AMOLED screens. After the update, we still have LCD
It was not there in the factory preview however it is in the ASOP version of lollipop which I had before this so I am pretty sure it is possible to have it on the nexus 5.
This is the version that Ambient Display is in for the nexus 5

1) Yes of course it is "Possible"
2) It's in AOSP ROMs because it is an L feature, therefore it is in the source code
3) It won't be in the stock image because it is not designed for our screen technology

Ambient display is designed for AMOLED Screens to replace the LED notification. As AMOLED pixels are independently controlled (they can be turned off and on individually), a notification can be shown on screen, using only a minute amount of power - not much more than the LED - Whilst being more informative.
LCD pixels cannot be independently controlled, The backlight is either on or off - using lots of power - ergo, is not a suitable replacement for an LED notification. In otherwords, battery drain fro LCD users

Who cares about the battery drain. I just want something to turn my screen on when I get a txt message. I loved this feature in the previous builds, sad to see it didn't make it to final.

Google cares about battery drain. Hence the delay in releasing the OTA and factory images for the Nexus 5.

Right...because the WiFi bug has anything to do with this.
If you don't want the ambient display (and associated battery drain) then feel free to toggle it off. My point is we don't even have the option to turn it on, and it's a useful feature to me.
Useful feature to me too. Since I have wireless charging pad all over the place, I don't really worry about battery too much. When I go on weekend trips, I can always toggle ambient display off too.

They're not making this ROM for you. CM is making ROMs for you and me, these factory images are for normal users, and they didn't have this feature in the first place (EVER!) without third-party apps. Battery life > Ambient Display following that logic, as that's how they can please 80% of customers — keep the phone battery on for longer. The screen on the N5 is one of the hungriest parts of it (if not the hungriest), which is why we all like to measure Screen On Time, rather than how long it can sit in standby...
That's the reason we have a notification led and Moto X / Nexus 6 don't. They could enable Ambient Display on Nexus 5 also, but that's kinda pointless and dangerous for the majority of the users.
As a side note, I also think that it looks pretty ugly on an LCD display sitting on a desk: the AMOLED pixels lighting up and pulsing in pitch back actually look really cool, but with LCD display you'd have that screen light-up effect on many viewing angles.
Someone make ambient display mide enabler flashable zip please...

It was NEVER going to make it officially to this phone because it is NOT DESIGNED for our screens. I'm really not sure how many ways I need to say this. Want the feature? Go custom. Otherwise live with it.
Jeez. Lollipop release will be the death of me.

Has anyone thought of changing the leds to brighter ones?
Wondering if someone tried that(and failed? ..no seriously I'm just wondering if someone tried to replace these smd leds to better ones)
Led technology evolves quite fast so they should be better leds out there by now, or having the same brighness but better power consumption(less heat)
just use an external LED gadget.

@Mr.Ak far from perfect, if it was Xenon flash brightness that would be true but it's not ..especially outdoor the "flash" is next to useless

Hmm,it's pretty much fine here on outdoor too.I don't recall even any custom kernel having " Notification Led Brightness" feature, though there are many color changing features.
Well, you can use ambient display too or you can set the camera flashlight as a notification light, then it would be bright, lol. It would be similar to S Light feature introduced on Note devices, there's an app on PS which does all that.

Led notification has no purpose of changing heh (who uses flash? hmm why not be able to use it?)
---------------------------
Others leds that NEEDS to be changed are the hardware button leds, these are VERY dim(can't see them unless completely darkness. I could try such changes myself if I has a spare 1+1 that I didn't care if it dies in my hands(anyone care to donate a phone for the greater good? ahhahhaah) ...I'm good with my hands but I'd never try to mod such things in my daily driver, it would be great for the hardware buttons to use "proper" leds there
I came across this posted on Reddit for the OnePlus 5, but I've tested it and it works on the 5t on OB8, at least. It's a Magisk module which activates always on ambient display to a schedule. You access the settings under Settings>Display
Thread is here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/co...ble_always_on_display_for_op5?sort=confidence
Thanks for sharing ? works great
Not working for me, no option shows up.. (OxygenOS 5.1.1, 8.1 Oreo)
Got it working. Just trying to see how it affects the battery.
Thanks for the file but unfortunately its not working in OxigenOS Oreo 8.1. No options available in Settings/display or settings/display/ambient display
And i found "OPAod.apk" is already included in Oxigen OS 8.1 "system/priv-app/OPAod". So it on't work in OxigenOS may be.

Works on 5t, but doesn't seems to have screen burn in protection. The details are fixed in the same position i guess.

Work fine on OP5t (Android 8.1, OOS Beta 8)... Just notice thaht it will ignore the proximity sensor... So ut's realy always on, even if it's in the pocket or purse... What is a bit of disappointment and not battery friendly.

In fact, I have to correct myself ... After a while (the proximity sensor was covered), the screen went off ... What is great. Every next time I repeated the test, it was good. This mode is almost perfect. I can not see the suggestion that I could put at this moment.
I have to use it for a while to see how it behaves and then make comments. Very sorry for missleading critic I put above.

Hello,
I am currently using a OP5, and I really like having a front LED to tell me if a message had been received, or not.
Like, I just have to look at my device for ~2sec and I know if a notification is waiting or not.
I am interested by buying a 7/7Pro, but it doesn't have this LED. Isn't it a problem as a daily ?
Thank you !

Ahh NoLED app. What an oldie but goodie! I had used that a long, long time ago and it served its purpose well.
@Khwaja7 - I used to rely a lot on the LED for notification and the app mentioned in the previous post was a good solution. I don't rely on it much nowadays because I had bought a cheap Xiaomi Mi Fit 3 band so I can see any messages and emails from my fitness band. If your phone is almost always near you, or you don't mind getting to your phone to check, you can set the OP7Pro up to quickly check by a single tap on the screen to wake the screen up.
you can also try Plus Beat from google play
It uses the edge horizontal light feature, and lights it up once a while.
Yep, plus beat might be your best bet for now...

Must be individual to the phones then. I have it installed and it shows a notification every 10 secs and in the colours set up under its settings. Phone has ambient display on.
Had LEDs on all my other phones but don't miss it at all since moving to the OnePlus 6T and the to the 7 Pro.
Good in a way since you're not always going for your phone every 10 seconds because of a blinking LED.
Notifications wake the screen up so that's enough. Can prioritize them as well so only the important stuff pops up.

I couldn't get pulse beat to work at all. This one works well but takes about 2% battery per hour the way I have mine set worth a shot and only one I found really works. Sadly the fingerprint lock screen is still there so you have to unlock a bit slower but it works well and easy. Screenshot for example as I couldn't find share button on play store sorry.
Thank you all for your answers !
I will buy a 7Pro then, and I'll see if it fits my needs about notifications alert.
If it doesn't, I'll try your possibilities
Khwaja.
Notification light is a bummer. Why they can't use the same as on the pixel is beyond me. That system just works.
Common guys give us always on display!
