Always On Ambient Display - OnePlus 5T Themes, Apps, and Mods

I came across this posted on Reddit for the OnePlus 5, but I've tested it and it works on the 5t on OB8, at least. It's a Magisk module which activates always on ambient display to a schedule. You access the settings under Settings>Display
Thread is here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/co...ble_always_on_display_for_op5?sort=confidence

Thanks for sharing ? works great

Not working for me, no option shows up.. (OxygenOS 5.1.1, 8.1 Oreo)

Got it working. Just trying to see how it affects the battery.

Thanks for the file but unfortunately its not working in OxigenOS Oreo 8.1. No options available in Settings/display or settings/display/ambient display
And i found "OPAod.apk" is already included in Oxigen OS 8.1 "system/priv-app/OPAod". So it on't work in OxigenOS may be.

Haha. Yeah, I read that too. Also read that some devices have a dedicated chip for AOD. I was hoping we would get lucky in that regard.

Work pretty well on my OnePlus 6

Works on 5t, but doesn't seems to have screen burn in protection. The details are fixed in the same position i guess.

Work fine on OP5t (Android 8.1, OOS Beta 8)... Just notice thaht it will ignore the proximity sensor... So ut's realy always on, even if it's in the pocket or purse... What is a bit of disappointment and not battery friendly.

Yes...too bad. I think OnePlus will allow it when it will officially, because pocket mode is supposed to take care of that

In fact, I have to correct myself ... After a while (the proximity sensor was covered), the screen went off ... What is great. Every next time I repeated the test, it was good. This mode is almost perfect. I can not see the suggestion that I could put at this moment.
I have to use it for a while to see how it behaves and then make comments. Very sorry for missleading critic I put above.

Weak camera flash?

Hi
Straight to the point. My led is very weak. It's A LOT weaker than Nexus 4, Moto G and iPhone 5s. Don't have other phones to compare it with. It's only good to illuminate something not further than 40-50cm away, anything further than that is picked up by higher iso.
Us this normal or shall I be getting a replacement?
it's normal, I noticed that too.

Yep, with further experimenting I found that it's very weak when flashlight is on but fires stronger when picture is taken.
Thanks

Android 8.1 beta now available

Get it here :

Cool. Bought the phone today, and it's already on 8.1. Hoping Nokia will keep up the pace
I have been battering it since installing and i cant make it cough, splutter or hiccup, seems all but finished to me rather than a beta.
Not quite. I discovered and reported a rather annoying kernel wakelock that doesn't allow CPU deep sleep for hours, causing battery drain.

Hi, and thanks for asking. At the moment I am so happy with the barbone Android, that I don't see a reason to root. Maybe at some other point in time...
By the way, it took just a few seconds to enter Nokia beta and download the 8.1.

I do not have the phone, I have another phone that uses the same sensors as the Nokia 8, that's why I would like to have the system dump so I can see some information regarding cameras. Or if you can link me to the beta download that would be great. I can try to pull files and info from it.
I haven't noticed any crashes on this beta, but the battery life is definitely worse for me.
This device has no root, so pulling the system will be difficult I think.

That's what beta testing is for. "Works on my computer", you know, is not an acceptable excuse for programmers doing paid work. In some circumstances, on some models, in some regions, with some mobile service providers, etc, etc, you get intermittent weird problems that are impossible to catch during the "closed" beta testing phase. On my phone, there is almost no CPU deep sleep due to some kernel wakelock (I cannot get more details than this without root access, and there's no root for this model). After 3 days on 8.1 beta, I rolled back to 8.0 stable; no wakelock issues whatsoever. Of course, I submitted a comprehensive bug report before rolling back, so hopefully HMD catches and squashes this bug.
If you set animations to 0.5x you can notice the speed improvement more. Though could be placebo. Before 0.5x was more choppy and 8.1 feels smoother.
8.1 is definitely smoother!
The double tap on recent apps (for fast change) are waaay faster and without a single hiccup for me.
Battery have better stand-by with wifi and auto sync on.
Less than 1% per hour! (almost two hours to drain 1%)

Wow chill your beans, i am fully aware what beta testing is and i certainly do not need preaching to about it by the likes of you.
I was about to report that the standby times on my phone are also reduced but i don't think i'll bother now, you seem to have it all covered with your comprehensive report.
I observe that when i take my phone out of my pocket it automatically unlocks the screen lock( i put my finger on fp sensor when i take my phone out of my pocket). After that i checked if there is a problem with the light sensor, so i covered it so it couldn't get any light but still unlocked the phone when i used my fp to unlock it. Do you guys have that problem? Also to note that when i am making phone calls light sensor works like normal.

USB tethering also doesn't seem to be working correctly and causes reboots.

I'm using Bluetooth with two different car kits, speaker and headphones. No issues at all. Actually it seems to be using less power than on 8.0.
On 8.0 sometimes I couldn't connect to car kit. On 8.1 this issue seems to be gone.
This is the kind of battery life i am getting now after a few days running the beta, i still think standby times are worse but not shockingly so.

No front LED for notifications ?

Hello,
I am currently using a OP5, and I really like having a front LED to tell me if a message had been received, or not.
Like, I just have to look at my device for ~2sec and I know if a notification is waiting or not.
I am interested by buying a 7/7Pro, but it doesn't have this LED. Isn't it a problem as a daily ?
Thank you !
Khwaja.

Ahh NoLED app. What an oldie but goodie! I had used that a long, long time ago and it served its purpose well.
@Khwaja7 - I used to rely a lot on the LED for notification and the app mentioned in the previous post was a good solution. I don't rely on it much nowadays because I had bought a cheap Xiaomi Mi Fit 3 band so I can see any messages and emails from my fitness band. If your phone is almost always near you, or you don't mind getting to your phone to check, you can set the OP7Pro up to quickly check by a single tap on the screen to wake the screen up.
you can also try Plus Beat from google play
It uses the edge horizontal light feature, and lights it up once a while.
Yep, plus beat might be your best bet for now...

Must be individual to the phones then. I have it installed and it shows a notification every 10 secs and in the colours set up under its settings. Phone has ambient display on.
Had LEDs on all my other phones but don't miss it at all since moving to the OnePlus 6T and the to the 7 Pro.
Good in a way since you're not always going for your phone every 10 seconds because of a blinking LED.
Notifications wake the screen up so that's enough. Can prioritize them as well so only the important stuff pops up.

I couldn't get pulse beat to work at all. This one works well but takes about 2% battery per hour the way I have mine set worth a shot and only one I found really works. Sadly the fingerprint lock screen is still there so you have to unlock a bit slower but it works well and easy. Screenshot for example as I couldn't find share button on play store sorry.
Thank you all for your answers !
I will buy a 7Pro then, and I'll see if it fits my needs about notifications alert.
If it doesn't, I'll try your possibilities
Khwaja.
Notification light is a bummer. Why they can't use the same as on the pixel is beyond me. That system just works.
Common guys give us always on display!

Moto Active Display? (or similar?)

All the incredible steps forward in phones and ROM's, and I still can't get myself to forget how much I looooved that Moto Active Display. I miss it so much. ?
Seems like such a step backward not to have it, and Android always seems to be about having everything you can imagine.
Is there any ROM's, Modules, or Apps I can use on my 7P to get this feature back?

The display screen flashes when you get a message, and will continue to flash occasionally until you pick up phone.
Anytime you wave your hand over screen it wakes up for a moment.
You can push on any notification and it will give you a lot more info about that notification.
If you swipe up on a notification it will take you directly to that app.
Much more interactive.
I'll find a YouTube video...
You can skip the 1st minute...
I think back in the Android 4.3-4.4.4 days we had this features even in custom Roms. I wonder why its gone. Todays active display is nice but is much less interactive. I would also be happy if some big dev would make some code which the ROMs can implement it.

Probably because drained the battery too much. Today's AOD consume only 0.1-0.5% per hour.

Yeah, it came on my 4.4.4 device.
It was when Google owned Moto, so it gave Moto better access to Android to do something special, and everyone always seemed to agree Moto did it better than Google, but it has disappeared. ?
The app discussed after your post seems it might offer some of that though. I'm gonna check it out.

I have heard this discussed, and, while I understood the concern in theory, I never understood d it in practice.
Meaning I used a phone with it for a long time (Droid Turbo) and I always felt like I had GREAT battery life. Granted it was a big battery @ the time with 3700,but I got 2 days out of the battery sometimes, and I'm not a light user.
Batteries complains are nonsense. It consumes less then a regular always on display. Its just a features which dissapeared for some reason (as others did also).

I DL'd it and have been playing.
I found the preview to see what it will look like, but waiting for a notification to come in to make sure it actually turns on is like waiting for a kettle to boil...only worse, cuz ya can't tell if the burner is on.
Looks like it's gonna do the trick though. ?

Adaptive brightness.

I'm tired of this. It's been 8 days since I got this phone and It's still absolutely unusable in conditions like dimmed room with any source of light (i.e tv or bedside lamp), or mounted in a car used as a satnav, or with lights off in the dark.
Aactually, it can play up at anytime, any day, any night.
It's unbelievable that in 2019 I can't get normally behaving display under controlled conditions. It goes up and down like crazy. Tried to teach this thing by adjusting manually every time hoping for the best but no improvement. It's just totally unreliable and I hope Amazon will accept my return. My first and only journey with this company has ended. I knew I shouldn't go with chinese brand, I knew it. Never ever again.
It's 10pm here, I'm sitting only with a small bed side lamp and whilst writing this post the brightness went up to 1/3 of the scale 3 times for no reason and never went back down where it should be. This makes my eyes bleed. What a joke.
The phone is awesome besides that 1 hiccup I do agree that brightness issue sucks but not to the point you have said.
I hope they fix it.

It's nowhere near as big of a problem as you're making it out to be.
I really think you are exaggerating. All phones have issues and on average this phone is very good.
The problem is they keep saying they've fixed it when they clearly haven't. I can get complete dimness in daylight all of a sudden. This is the first phone I've ever experienced auto brightness problems.

That's one of the reasons i will switch to a custom rom when they are full functional. But that's been the issue with all oneplus phones at oos, in my experience. I had the 5t and 6, i thought it was the same.

I have no problem with adaptive brightness. Since Android Pie, AI from google handle the adaptive brightness. See more https://venturebeat.com/2018/08/28/how-android-pies-adaptive-battery-and-adaptive-brightness-work/
My adaptive brightness is not that bad. I only really need to adjust at night in bed with lights off. Other than that i think it works well.

Before Adaptive brightness was supposedly improved I used a product called Lux (no longer works on Android Pie) and compared to that apps options and ease of use the OP7 pro implementation of Adaptive Brightness sucks. You simply need to spend too much time teaching it to "adapt" while missing profiling options for particular circumstances to override the adapt option and just have the brightness level you desire for what your using the phone for at that particular time. Older android versions beat the current situation hands down at least on this phone. On the whole I love OOS and the OP7 Pro but this is a fail in my books. One that I've actively looked for a way to correct.
I rarely find it a problem
Not a issue for me and seems to get better each update...
