I'm tired of this. It's been 8 days since I got this phone and It's still absolutely unusable in conditions like dimmed room with any source of light (i.e tv or bedside lamp), or mounted in a car used as a satnav, or with lights off in the dark.
Aactually, it can play up at anytime, any day, any night.
It's unbelievable that in 2019 I can't get normally behaving display under controlled conditions. It goes up and down like crazy. Tried to teach this thing by adjusting manually every time hoping for the best but no improvement. It's just totally unreliable and I hope Amazon will accept my return. My first and only journey with this company has ended. I knew I shouldn't go with chinese brand, I knew it. Never ever again.
It's 10pm here, I'm sitting only with a small bed side lamp and whilst writing this post the brightness went up to 1/3 of the scale 3 times for no reason and never went back down where it should be. This makes my eyes bleed. What a joke.
The phone is awesome besides that 1 hiccup I do agree that brightness issue sucks but not to the point you have said.
I hope they fix it.

It's nowhere near as big of a problem as you're making it out to be.
I really think you are exaggerating. All phones have issues and on average this phone is very good.
The problem is they keep saying they've fixed it when they clearly haven't. I can get complete dimness in daylight all of a sudden. This is the first phone I've ever experienced auto brightness problems.

Already updated and still the same for me. I have to manually untick and retick the auto brightness icon for it to correct at least once a day.
i feel that it was better with the latest update, maybe try to Wipe Cache? to see if it helps
That's one of the reasons i will switch to a custom rom when they are full functional. But that's been the issue with all oneplus phones at oos, in my experience. I had the 5t and 6, i thought it was the same.

Are you saying that custom ROMs can help with that? I may try it.
I used to use Lux app on my Nexus 6p and it worked well. But this app has never been updated to work with current versions of android. Probably because all the manufacturers can get it done right out of the box

I have no problem with adaptive brightness. Since Android Pie, AI from google handle the adaptive brightness. See more https://venturebeat.com/2018/08/28/how-android-pies-adaptive-battery-and-adaptive-brightness-work/
My adaptive brightness is not that bad. I only really need to adjust at night in bed with lights off. Other than that i think it works well.

Before Adaptive brightness was supposedly improved I used a product called Lux (no longer works on Android Pie) and compared to that apps options and ease of use the OP7 pro implementation of Adaptive Brightness sucks. You simply need to spend too much time teaching it to "adapt" while missing profiling options for particular circumstances to override the adapt option and just have the brightness level you desire for what your using the phone for at that particular time. Older android versions beat the current situation hands down at least on this phone. On the whole I love OOS and the OP7 Pro but this is a fail in my books. One that I've actively looked for a way to correct.
I rarely find it a problem
Not a issue for me and seems to get better each update...

Hi all. I just got a Captivate after using Mattc on my HD2 and I used an Aria for a couple weeks as well. I used Mattc on the HD2 for a couple months and really liked it. I understood it was running from the SD and lived with the other issues like slow wake up and occasional goofiness.
So when I got my Captivate I was thinking, wow, I'll have one of(if not the) fastest Android phone on it's native hardware. Everything should rock. I should be blown away... Not.
HELP!
The brightness settings. WTF! Why did they implement like 10 ways the brightness screws with your day. On my HD2 w/Mattc I set the brightness in settings to where I wanted and it stayed. Forever. Also when it hits 10% it kicks the brightness all the way down. 10%? Com on maybe 5%. But what is worse is when it does kick it down I kick it back up but it dims again at every percent it goes down. ANNOYING. Please let me control my phone... Oh and don't get me started on the Browser brightness. Huh? Even with the browser brightness set at max it's still dimmer than my regular brightness setting. Noticably. I only keep my brightness at like 75-80% too.
Also what the hell is with the lame Calendar notification settings? Are there any?
My question is this. Is there any ROM out there that will strip all that Samsung ideology and give me a stock Android experience. Especially without the brightness issues. Why do I need to slide my notification bar to change brightness? All it does for me is just cause my brightness to vary accidentally when I don't want it to.
Why must I add on programs for my Calendar alerts to function normally? Why?
So again. Is there a ROM out there that will strip all the Samsung goofiness? If I can't get this phone to work like I want I'm going to sell it and look for a Telus HTC Desire to use on ATT. HTC phones are the best man. IMHO
Thanks.

There is no stock Android experience. Android is just the core - Samsung, HTC, etc, they all add specific things in order for their specific hardware to function. If you don't want what comes on your AT&T Captivate, then you can root and uninstall the apps you don't like, flash one of the many, many cooked ROMs available on this forum (just look around - they are everywhere, and all with great pictures and descriptions and huge threads full of information), tweak settings to your heart's content, or anything else you want to do.

I don't have any add-ons and I get my alerts. What exactly isn't working for you?
Auto brightness has been off. First thing I do-
I do not get audible alerts when a Calendar reminder goes off-(and there is no where in settings to change/check this)
I had to install "Calendar Snooze" to play an audible alert for a Calendar reminder-
Phone is at 10% now fully dimmed. Nice... Considering how bad the battery life is for this phone(for me) I'll be spending a lot of time with the screen fully dimmed.

Try reading a little and you will see you can set the brightness at where you want it by un-checking the automatic brightness setting..Then you can swipe along the status bar to raise and lower the brightness..It will stay where you had it set IF the automatic brightness is unchecked..Where you have the slider at will be the brightest it will swipe to..
Set your alerts to something you can hear and turn up the volume..They work fine.
Battery life is not a issue provided you follow some advise..Bump charge it 1 time and then use it till it drains down to single digits before recharging...also make sure you back out of all programs and turn off wi-fi and gps and syncing when you don't need them. Loose any task killer program you have and run it stock..you will find your battery life is excellent..if not you may or may not have a bad battery..Lastly..if you are really dissatisfied with it..take it back..
Good Luck

In regards to the brightness, turn off auto brightness and the 'power saving option.', that should solve your issue.
As far as removing the AT&T bloatware goes, try Unleash the beast.
If you want to run Froyo try flashing a rom, I used the latest version of Cognition.
Run far away from this phone if you still have the chance.

Thanks for the advice. Although I have done all of those things. I'm kind of coming to one real main pain point that I can't seem to solve. The screen dimming at 10%. Does anyone know how to disable that? Even if I kick the brightness back up after it dims at 10% it will redim at 9% and so on...
Bitter. But hopeful.

Unfortunately, running away from this phone does seem to be good advise. It doesn't mater how slick it is in theory. Uber display and kickass hardware are useless if the basic functionality suffers due to glitches most of the other options don't seem to exibit.
I decided to play the "mod and wait" game with this thing, and I'm regretting it. Broad-brush damnations would have helped me. At this point, enough issues have came up about this hardware that a "broad-brush" sticky may be warranted. The alert issues found by the OP, may be related to his speaker begining to fail. I had a similar issue. Calander and alarm notifications began failing in some apps, but not others. The phone would still ring. Some apps could still use the speaker. Within a week, nothing could use the speaker, and I had to do the "push-on-it" fix.
It's a forum. Posts are opinions. I've been impressed occasionally by the raw performance of this phone. Yet, I've also spent hours, hours, researching problems, applying fixes, flashing, pushing on the speaker, etc. And I've spent hours "waiting" for the thing to do something simple like send an email when it did fine the day before. With as much time and effort as I've put into researching and working on this phone, I feel like I (and others) have not gotten enough stability out of it.
I propose a broad brush damnation for this phone: "slick but intermittent".

I think most people regret buying this phone. Or they will, when FroYo never arrives, the lag gets worse and worse, the phone dies on them, and the GPS never come close to working, the market decides not to intall your app, this, that, or the other thing force closes, etc. etc. etc.

I think your wrong. I think quite a few people got defective phones and haven't bothered returning them, thinking that if they root it and flash a different rom that would magically fix a broken phone. This is XDA and folks here mostly do this..thus the reason for most of the complaints. Problem is..it won't change much of anything to reflash if the phone is defective..If it is broken to begin with..it will be broken no matter what you do to it.. If yours is defective..quite *****ing about it and get one that isn't..or a different phone entirely. The working ones are great..just like they are supposed to be.
I have 2 of them built in September..both work and neither is defective. This tells me many of those built prior have some issues..perhaps not all of them..but some of them certainly. This certainly doesn't make it right by anyones account..just saying if yours is defective..return it and get one that isn't.
I honestly don't understand people who have the option of doing this, not doing it.The folks at my AT&T store opened 7 different boxes and checked every one of them for any blue tint on the screen and having the 3 button recovery option..for my second one bought at the same time,so I do know there are many out there that ain't working properly..The OP of this thread..is unhappy with it..damn..loose it and be done with it if you are that unhappy..or take that one back and get them to open up the boxes and show you one that works properly...If it was bought mail order..then you should just return it as defective and get your money back..and buy where you can see it first..It's your choice...and your money.

Is it just me or does the auto-brightness seem to only stay at a certain brightness and never change? On my previous phone, usually when I had auto-brightness enabled, whenever I walked into a dark room, my brightness would lower right away but on this phone, no matter where I go, the brightness seems to always be the same with auto-brightness on. The brightness does not change, even when I walk out with the sun out..
Can anybody confirm this please, I'm thinking of exchanging this unit as it might be defective...

Might be your phone. In my moderately-lit office, I can definitely see the screen brightness change when I focus a flashlight on the sensor and then take it away. It's not a huge difference, but definitely observable.
Do you use a case? Is the case blocking the light sensor?
I do not use a case. I have also tried blocking the sensor with my fingers and the brightness just seems to always stay the same... also when I use the power control widget to change brightness and set it to auto-brightness it immediately jumps to that same particular brightness level that I've been stating

The change is definitely less noticeable on this phone than my Nexus One, but is there.
I just got the G2x and it does the same for me. It's range of brightness seems to be 20-30% and that's it. I had this problem with stock gingerbread, so I tried rooting and installing CM7, but same problem. So I got it set to manual 10/40/100 on my power control.
My friend said his original droid did this for quite a while until a software update came along a few months later. Maybe we just have to wait till there's a software update to fix it?
Yes, it's borked, always has been.
Mine is broken too. Same happens to me.

Same here. It has never worked, as far as I can remember. Depending on where the setting happens to be left at, my battery runs out in just a few hours, or I cannot use it in the car.
Aside: I switched to an original Droid from an iPhone 3G, then onto a G2X. My next phone is going to be an iPhone -- and I'm not coming back to Android until Google figures things out. Android is nice, but I hate being out of date after a couple of months, and having to install unsupported, hacky, half-broken user-built ROMs to stay current with the state-of-the-art functionality.
Anyone else have their flash led always dimly lit? Even when the phone is off my camera flash is dimly lit.
This is most likely the heart rate monitor. There is currently an issue with Google Fit and the S6 which causes the heart rate monitor to stay on. The only solution st this point is to uninstall Google Fit until Google releases an update that fixes the app.

I'm not sure Google Fit is the only possible source for this problem.
I have the same problem as OP. I got my S6 (non-edge, 32GB) about 24 hours ago and last night noticed the faint yellow glow on the back of the unit. I haven't been impressed by the battery life (admittedly a very limited time with it so far) - but this could explain the less than stellar battery life so far.
I don't have Google Fit installed (in fact if I go to the play store, I get a message saying that it's not compatible with this version"). S-Health is disabled too.
One other thing, when I use the flashlight feature, I notice that the light isn't nearly as bright as on the S3 - not sure if this is relevant, it is the same LED.
I rebooted the system, and even turned it off, the faint light stays on. If the unit wasn't sealed I'd pull out the battery just to confirm this light can go out :-/
I have this issue on mine as well. I first noticed it when I went to charge my phone over night next to my bed. I lay the phone on its face so the LED notification doesn't show. I noticed a slight glow from the flash diode. I thought at first it only happened when I was charging my phone. Today, while at work, I powered down my phone and again noticed the light. For me, its always on. I just got off the phone with T-Mobile and they are going to over night me a replacement. I mention this thread to the T-Mobile support rep and she looked it up while I was on the phone with her. My friend's S6 does not have this issue, so not all of them are having this. I encourage everyone to go into a dark room and check your flash diode.

No disrespect taken, man those are hard to get off (thanks for confirming this, it looked like there were).
However, that might explain the flashlight function being a bit dimmer than on the S3, but it wouldn't explain the constant light source itself.
How can we possibly check this in store where there is substantial amount of light anywhere. I'd definitely check my S6 in store for this.
Mine doesn't have this dim light at all I checked and I closed all the lights to make sure nothing is coming out . I don't know I wish I can help

I think it would be difficult to see unless you ask them to let you into a dark storage room without windows That's how I can verify mine is still doing that during the day, though at night when I wake up with the phone next to me, the glow is comparatively quite substantial.
Plus, you'll have to wait about a week before you can see them in the store.
I have two S6's and can confirm both of mine has this dim lit light only noticeable in the very dark.
The problem with us getting the device early is we don't know if this is hardware or software problem., that might get noticed and fixed with an update. Many say after the actual launch Samsung/Tmobile pushes an update. We can assume they at least will to fix the cell standby draining battery with VOLTE issue. Plus how many will we have to get shipped to us before we get one that doesn't do this, very different than being able to have the associate check it in the back office with lights off.
Can anyone that did get a replacement comment on this.

Mine is doing it too. If it is indeed the case that not all GS6s are doing this, that does make me concerned that somehow my unit is defective. I'm wondering if I should just hold onto it hoping that Samsung will fix it with a software update or if I should try yo exchange it.

I spoke with a tmobile rep. He said online orders get 20 days return exchange from the day of delivery not purchase. He also said there should be an update on a day or two after the official April 10th launch. I told him to document my account that I called about this issue. He said I could get another (two) overnight to me, but there's no way to guarantee if the new ones won't have this.
How come more people are not jumping in here to say theirs is doing it too. If its just us few maybe we do have a problem. But giving it's only noticeable in the dark maybe they haven't seen it on theirs?

I think you are right, unless you have the phone next to you at night you probably won't notice it., still odd, I would have expected others to notice it too. And, even as dim it is, it can't help with battery life. I hope it's a software issue and can be easily patched that way.
Edit: just noticed tonight that my phone does in fact have the LED issue. It's odd because I spent some time yesterday in the dark looking for the problem and it was no where to be found. Been laying in bed messing with my phone while it's charging, decided to flip it over and low and behold, dimly lit flash on :/.

This is making me think some S6s just have this defect where the LED never turns off and some don't. I think it might be best just to return my S6 and repurchase the phone after its official release date. I think these earlier phones might be more prone to defects. My gut feeling is that this is something that won't be fixed via software. I don't think exchanging the phone for a new one will help too much given that so many other S6s also have the issue, you have a good chance that the new phone you get will also be defective.

My guess is it's a hardware issue (perhaps they used a different supplier/component for this part) since all of the phones are presumably running the same software (some with the OTA update that was waiting from T-Mobile - like myself, others perhaps without it). If it can be patched with software is another issue.
Actually, perhaps it would be useful to know if those experiencing the problem have applied the OTA update and those without haven't. My hunch is it won't be a factor, but curious, so people reporting should state their situation.
For my non-edge S6 (black 32 GB) I have the OTA and my flash stays on dimly all the time.
I noticed this last night and I thought it could have just been some sort of burn in from using the flashlight. (64gb regular tmo S6)
It's basically impossible to tell with any sort light around whether or not this is happening, even just with residual light, but mine does seem to be dimly lit in a pitch black room.
Could it have something to do with the selfie feature on the camera? Using the heart rate monitor as a picture button, that is.
I have a 64 GB T mobile regular GS6 with the OTA and I do have the issue.
Anyone else notice their Honor 8 automatically moving the brightness slider all the way down? The screen goes very dim. I move the slider back to the middle and it moves back down, thus dimming the screen. I see a thread on Honor website that has received no constructive response: https://club-us.hihonor.com/honor8.32/honor-8-feedback.1226
Another question. What is the best way to let the Huawei developers/support know about issues? Thank You in advance.
It is a known auto brightness bug and as far as I know it is going to be fixed or at least it is going to work better with the update B131 which is coming soon.

Great! That's good to know. Duly noted. [ns]
Not sure if that fix is included in B150 for FRD-L04...
Listed in the FRD-L04's update notes it says something about optimization or fixes to the auto-brightness setting. I've turned it on since and the screen doesn't immediately drop to minimum brightness outside a well lit room or direct sunlight anymore. I wouldn't say it's perfect now, but I more often find myself turning the brightness further down a bit as its brighter than I need it to be to read it easily when I'm not somewhere that's pretty dark.
I may have just also gotten more used to the lowest setting so it bothers me less. Or the lowest setting may actually be a bit higher? I'm not sure really.
I have the latest L04 update and when transitioning to darker area at night the screen goes almost too dark.
I think this is a bug that been around Huawei phones for some time. Somehow some have it and it gets fixed over time.
But DO factory reset after the update.

Just got my FRD-L09 which was on B101 and has just taken two OTA's to B131 but this auto brightness bug is still present. I factory reset following the update but still find if I use auto brightness it will dim to the lowest setting after about half an hour without any change in the ambient lighting. Do I have a hardware problem and need to ask for a replacement? Thanks

Not sure tbh, it was fine for me, I'm on the Nougat Beta now so can't test again.

Just thought I'd update on this. I had tried to register for the Nougat Beta test program but didn't seem to get anywhere with it so was about to call CS to try and sort out this issue. Woke this morning to find my phone had downloaded B316 (Nougat) and was prompting me to install which I now have. Auto brightness now seems to be working like a charm and no other issues that I'm aware of so all good now.

Glad to hear everything is working properly now!
Hmm, I think I posted too soon as the problem has just returned. I'm thinking a hardware issue now so I'll see what Honor have to say

Minimum brightness issue fixed.
Hey guys,
I got the phone 3 days ago and i was facing the same problem on up to date software (B162) for FRD-L04. After trying out a lot of different things suggested online, i was messing around with settings and i have successfully fixed it. It's been a whole day and I've gone from pitch dark to sunlight and the brightness hasn't adjusted itself to all the way down yet.
1) Go into Developer Options and turn off the sun light visibility option.
2) in the notification tray select auto brightness checkbox and then make sure you are in a pitch dark room or have your light sensor covered and wait for the brightness to go all the way down.
3) Now adjust it to the minimum brightness setting you like to keep.
4) Test it out in bright and dark environments and it should be all good. Restart your phone just in case.
Enjoy!
Hi,
i got my Zenfone 6 today, and i really like it, but there is one thing that probably makes me return it...
The display is flickering when it‘s set to really low brightness, i think its the backlight.
I‘m not sure if it's broken or not. So, am i the only one with a flickering display?
Thank you

I had the same situation yesterday, it was on low brightness too.
But only for a few seconds, for now, everything seems fine, even in low brightness.
With adaptive brightness set on or off?
Do you have the latest firmware version WW-16.1210.1904.133?
It doesn‘t matterif adaptive brightness is on or off, it does it as soon as the display lowers its brightness to the 1st 1/4 of the brightness bar...
Ok. Do you have the latest firmware version WW-16.1210.1904.133?

Hi, i have the same problem. Received the phone a week ago and trying to find a solution. I am on the last firmware, tried the dev option about overlay, hard reset and still the same. Going to send it back to Asus for a refund...
I wonder if this is software or hardware related. As of now i can't use it at night with low brightness.
It will probably be a problem for a particular phone, I would recommend that you replace it with a new one.

Thanks for the feedback. Called Asus this morning to replace it hopefully.
My Zenfone 6 does the same. If I set the adaptive brightness on the low brightness flickering disappears. I think it's a software related problem because others Zenfone have the same behaviour.
Tried it. No matter the settings it flickers. I found a video that match the problem, weird no one noticed : youtu.be/DN1La8AbZsI
Check at 1.16 min, on the right side, it flickers like that, when the luminosity is low. This is what i see on my screen.
Same here. White backgrounds flicker when brightness set to low. Tried disabling HW overlay, but it didn't help. Phone on the latest firmware WW_16.1210.1904.133.
Anybody letting the techs at Asus know about these problems? I would like to hear about a fix before I buy anything.
I am in touch with Asus France, i have to send back the phone for an exchange as they told me it MAY be a hardware problem.
I linked the thread to them if it can help.
Every zenfone I have had (2 and 3) have had this issue.

I think it's a software issue...if you let the brightness working in auto mode the problem disappears.
It is set in auto mode on my device and still the same. With or without doesn't help sadly.
Hmmm is this international version? The U.S is coming next month. Hopefully this get fix before I'm buying it.

Mine is flickering when brightness is set to low (about 1/4-th of the brightness slider and down) no matter auto or no auto.
Funny how we here in the US complain that so many phones are released in the EU, or India, or China long before they ever appear here....but in reality it could be that we benefit from this practice so that some of these issues can be resolved by others before we have to deal with them.

I hope that when this phone is released in your country, this issue will be solved definitively via software update. The way I see it, this problem isn't a huge problem, fortunately. Actually the screen flickering occours only if the brightness is set to a very low level (e.g. <20%) but, with this setting, the backlight is too dim as well for use even in a dark room (obviously for my taste). Since I use adaptive brightness with default settings, the minimum value the screen brightness reaches is 34% so I never get the problem....
