IMAP syncing problem with gmail from cyanogenMod 12 mail client - General Questions and Answers

I installed CyanogenMod 12 on my 1st generation Moto G. The IMAP settings for gmail are pretty clear from the web: http://oit.ncsu.edu/email/google-email-mobile-phones-android-os http://support.google.com/mail/answer/114408
However, I don't want auto sync, so I set it to Never. I want to sync manually. I haven't been able to find online how to initiate a manual sync. I do know that whenever I go to a box other than Inbox (e.g., Sent box), I see the one email I ever sent from the smartphone, and the spinning wheel that ever seems to stop. If I go into Trash, I see the one message I ever deleted from the phone, and the perpetually spinning wheel. I thought that they were the local Sent and Trash, so I tried to look in [Gmail], but an Internal Error (which I reported via the appropriately marked button) and the spinning wheel.
Is there a way to manually initiate a sync? What can I do to troubleshoot the Internal Error? I haven't been able to find anything like this on Google, but I'm not sure if I'm searching the right terms. It would help if someone could explain whether the email client is an Android app or a CM special app.
Thanks.

[Q] Android Market "Starting Download" issue

(Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum to ask, but here goes)
Has there been a fix for the old "Starting Download" issue on the Android Market? I still can't download anything from it. I know that resetting my phone will work (for a while), but it's not an option right now. Any help?
P.S. I've searched the forum as well and was not able to find a concrete answer.
I was told that starting Google Talk should make sure you're logged in to Google's server, which is (supposedly) what causes that problem.

Hmm, I tried that but I'm already logged in
That issue has haunted me for a while - I get a cold sweat anytime a download start takes longer than usual.
I personally don't believe it's an issue with your device (as I've seen some argue it to be), rather it's with your gmail account. When a factory reset didn't fix my problem, I went to a tmobile store where my buddy works, and we put my sim card into every android device he had (mt3g, mts, garmin, and one other I can't remember), only to find that none would allow me to download.
For me the workaround I'm currently using is to set up the device with another gmail account newly created for the purpose of being able to download apps, then set up my "real" gmail (the one I actually use) to sync my contacts and calendar. The only problem is that I can't use my real gmail on gchat, since that only signs into the primary account you used when setting up the device. I don't use gchat much on my phone anyway, so it wasn't that big of a deal.
I suppose it's possible my phone corrupted my account somehow, but I had deleted caches, updates, and anything else I'd heard had worked for others, but to no avail. If you get to the bottom of the problem, be sure to let me know.
Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the tip but as it turns out - I can't even add another account It always produce an error saying "can't establish connection". Any idea why this is the case?
The "Starting Download" issue for me, was unfixable and related to my google account. I created a new one and it worked flawlessly.

Hmm...that sounds like a connectivity issue and not a problem with the device. I'd say reboot your phone and try again.
Just to be clear, I created a new gmail address and used that during the initial setup of the phone (after a factory reset of course), then went to settings> accounts and sync> select add account and entered the old gmail I've used forever (which is why just ditching it and using the new one wasn't an option - I didn't want to bother notifying everyone I had a new email).
You'll see that you only have the option to sync contacts and gmail with a secondary gmail address - not calendar. To get around this (since my old gmail is the calendar I want to sync), set up the new gmail to share calendars w/ the old one. Once that's done, you'll see in your calendar app settings on the phone the option to sync the old gmail calendar and not the new one.
Hope that made sense! It's really not difficult to do - just annoying that it has to be done at all. I wish someone would figure out why some gmail accounts get stuck at starting download. What a pain.
I had this problem for awhile, but it was because I was task killing Google Talk. When I disabled the task killer it worked fine.
I read a few comments on the help community in the market to go to applications, manage apps, select the market then uninstall updates. This worked for a while but very intermittent. Worth a go though

I generally just wait, I believe it's a server issue...I eventually get the download but, yeah, I wait and then go back to the store and attempt to start the download again...and that seems to work.

Yes downloading from the market is related to the Google Talk app. I once deleted it from /system and it did the same thing.

Thanks for all of the replies. I know of the delete Market update solution but when I browse for Market in the Manage Application screen, I never see the "update" portion there. Any other tips?

[Q] Facebook Connection and Other Issues

After two weeks with my Focus, I'm obviously loving it. Upgrading from the Tilt has brought new meaning to my life.
Anyway, I've had enough little problems come up that I thought I'd try and get some questions answered by those smarter than I!
Integrated Facebook: Ever since the first day, I've been having issues with my Facebook account. Specifically, under Settings>email & accounts, the Facebook account says "Attention Required." Clicking on the account brings up an error popup that says "Not updated/We're having a problem connecting. Try again later./Last tried 8 hours ago/Error code: 83CF3104." Previously it gave error code "85FB5300." Here's a useless thread I started at MS Answers: http://social.answers.microsoft.com...266a6d0/#53db5744-b48c-4af8-bad5-9fe0fe95f61c It does manage to update FB from time to time, but it's wildly inconsistent.
This isn't that big a deal, but when I go to Facebook.com and login using IE on the phone, I get the "pocket version" which doesn't have any content. "Mobile version" shows up as a link on the page, but nothing is clickable. No biggie since I have the app and integration, just annoying.
IHeartRadio seems to lockup every time I use it. When I navigate away from it and then want to go back, it tries to start, shows the logo, then backs out.
My second most unstable app is Marketplace itself! It behaves exactly the same as above.
Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
EDIT: Adding #5: Everyone says that I should be able to see an icon to find people on my exchange server, but I haven't been able to ever find it. I create a new email from my Outlook account, then click the "To" field to bring up my address book, but there is no link to my exchange directory. Am I doing something wrong?
do you have ssl enabled in facebook settings? if so, try disabling it.

I don't have an option for SSL in the Facebook account settings on the phone. Is that what you're asking?

I get "search exchange directory" buttons both in email and the people hub. In email, start typing the name of the person you're looking for, and the last entry in the list you get will be the exchange directory. Similarily, using search in the people hub will have exchange as the last possible button.

No... if you have the SSL option enabled on your Facebook account, not on your phone, the people hub will not update.
Seems to be an issue with the Focus as other WP7 users have not seen this issue,
I've looked every where I can in the phone and cannot see where the settings are that control the Facebook feed.
Log into Facebook via your web browser and disable the SSL setting under your security options.
For anyone still suffering this problem, I found a solution:
SOLUTION (from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...83cf0108/4c4c7887-2b8b-4a83-b816-bf26e265fe17)
I went through my People Hub, opening every contact that had no picture to see what account they were in. Most of them were contacts from my Live account, but ONE was a Facebook contact. (Per the thread above, Facebook connection problems can be caused by a friends' corrupt profile picture.) I went to her profile online (where the picture showed up fine) and unfriended her. I had to wait several hours for her to disappear from my People Hub, but once she did I immediately went to Settings>Email & Accounts and, for the first time ever, saw the Facebook account with no error message!
As I said, I have been suffering this error message since day 1, although I've seen at least 4 distinct error codes (85FB4400, 85FB5300, 83CF3104, 83CF0108). I tried deleting and restoring the Facebook account, deleting and restoring the Facebook app, changing my Facebook password, logging out of Facebook on my PC, all to no avail. I never performed a factory reset, because I've installed all of my apps from the Marketplace (not Zune), and was not eager to hunt them all down again (please tell me this is another WP7 bug that is being fixed).
Hope this helps others! I've refreinded her and she's changed her profile pic in the last few weeks, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I had the problem with facebook too a few months back. Turned out to be one profile picture that appeared as a red x. Unfriended and the error went away for me too.
Yeah, re-adding her as a friend and the problem is back. Hoping she changes her pic soon.

[Q]Mango and syncing Google contacts...error?

Hi all, I've updated to Mango and ever since then my Google contacts list has failed to sync ("there was a problem syncing, please try again later error 8004010f"). This is with a Google account tied to another email address not an @gmail.com address. If I put in an incorrect password or incorrect server details I get different errors so it seems as if I'm at least getting the details correct. I've tried all the steps I could find (mainly a useless KB article) so I'm wondering whether it's a Mango thing. Or possibly a Google+ thing?? (No I'm not on it.) Either way I foolishly unchecked the 'sync contacts' box so i now dont have any contacts

My google account sync perfectly with mango in my trophy...so must be something in your phone...Maybe the tied account has to do something with it
I figured it wasn't a common problem or I wouldnt be the only person complaining about this
Well, some more testing, I have tried deleting the account from my wp7 and adding it again - still the same error msg.
Bizarrely, though my Google contacts don't show up in my people hub, if I go to the hub and search for a contact and then hit "search Google directory" the contact will appear.
Also, checking my Google dashboard under Google Sync shows a "last sync: 8:25pm" or whenever the last time I tried to sync was. So I'm fairly certain this is an issue with my particular phone...Maybe it's time to hit the Microsoft support forums!

I think I know what's up
So I woke up this morning and the google sync button required attention. So I clicked on it and synced and well.. my contacts disappeared. Now I was perplexed by this. I erased and re introduced my account information. And nothing... so I went ahead and went to the Gmail webclient and somehow my contacts had been deleted. Google now has a function where you can restore your contacts. And I was able to sync again... Lets see how long this lasts. Let me know if you are able to fix your issue
Jose Moreno
I'm having the same issue on my Arrive. Can't sync and foolishly tried to delete and reconnect now all my contacts are gone. Did you figure out anything?
Actually, its not the exact same issue as I reread your problem as I am trying to sync directly with a gmail account, however, I am having the same results and same error.
Ah yes. I should've updated this. I never found a fix...but what I did do was add Gmail and Calendar to my google account. Then it synced fine. Not ideal as I never use Gmail but meh. Sorry I haven't got anything better!

Hotmail/Live settings with custom domain name

I can't find anywhere how to set a Hotmail/Live account that has a custom domain name. On Windows Mobile, the Windows Live app set up seamlessly. If I had a @hotmail.com domain, it would be easy. But my 'Live' email doesn't use the hotmail.com domain.
I need some better search wurds...
Pop settings
Based off what you are stating, you might be able to try the Live Pop settings as discussed here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6728632_configure-email-outlook-mobile-phone.html
Don't know if this will work but it is worth a try.

Sweet! that did the trick, at least for the email part. Everything I was reading had me trying settings for and Exchange email. Just about every page I found had me tweaking hotmail.com settings, and one combination I tried sync'd my calender and contacts, but only downloaded one email.
OK, went back to the Exchange settings over the pop3. It was working correctly before, I just didn't realize it doesn't back sync earlier emails.
My company email is [email protected]xyzcompany.com and I used m.hotmail.com as the server and it seems to be syncing correctly.
OK, this thing won't keep any email that is more than two days old. No matter what number of days I select. It syncs contacts and calender just fine tho.
*scratches head*
SI don't know that it would help but they just released an official hot mail app in the market. I know it isn't the greatest solution but it may solve your problem.

Hey thanks buddy. I searched the market for an 'official' MS app. I was looking for "Windows Live" as my search words, and all I found were 3rd party apps.
It seems to work pretty good. And handles multiple hotmail/Live email accounts.
Now if I can just keep all my contacts straighten out. This phone like to sync toooo dam much info, and I've been deleting duplicates and redundant info for days now! Ah.. gotta love the learning curve that comes with a new (to me) OS.

[Q] Server search on Gmail doesn't work - says "can't connect"

I added the GMail account through Google option (haven't tried the POP and IMAP).
It syncs fine, but it doesn't do a server search. Whenever I try it, it returns an error saying that it can't connect to the network.
Anyone knows how to fix it?
P.S. And how come there is not even an option to do server search for Hotmail?
Additional data:
- I'm using Samsung Focus with Mango
- device is unlocked, but branded to AT&T (not sure if it has anything to do with Gmail)
- tried both on 3G and WiFi
Thanks!

I have the same problem. It was present in 7712 and still is in the retail release of 7720. I also have a Samsung Focus, but I doubt that is the cause. I'm considering deleting the Google account from the phone and adding it back, but I hate to have to relink all of the contacts whose names are different from Facebook. Considering how Google has blocked non-primary calendars for Windows Phone and their event/invitation implementation is somewhat broken with Windows Phone, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that server search is also a broken feature, whether intentional or not. Has anyone had any success re-creating the Google account on the phone?

this is seriously annoying
I guess gmail wants us to go android, but I won't. I'm going to add another email account and suffer through. Fortunately for me I don't have a lot of important contacts with gmail.
I reported this to Microsoft a few weeks ago, and they are aware of the issue. I'm thinking it must be on Google's side. When labels come to Hotmail, I may just switch over entirely.
