Good Evening/Hello/Hi,
I own a sgh-i997 and I am running stock firmware (Froyo 2.2), rooted and bootloader unlocked. I was attempting to update to KitKat 4.4, I succeded in installing 2013.04.30-CWM-Synthesis-1.2Ghz.zip Kernel with SGS kernel flasher and that installed CWM, then I attempted to flash CWM flashable EFS to backup my IMEI. Then I installed the CM9 (ICS) rom and when I rebooted the phone and went into CWM i encountered this

Hope you guys can help me.

Curious if you can use the unbrick (via Odin) instead (to get you to Gingerbread as well), but the above would be a good starting point nonetheless

Did the above unbrick work? If having problems finding a download, need not look far.

is there any way to just obtain root access without having to install a custom recovery? I would like to just have root on stock
I think every time you reboot the phone your recovery will be set back to stock. You have to flash CWM every time you need to use it.

This is incorrect. Once you flash a custom recovery it is there to stay unless you remove it. Now on too the real point. Why would you want to root and not have a custom recovery? The point of having root access is to be able to gain access to things you can't unrooted and top flash custom firmware, hacks, mods, etc. which you cannot do with stock recovery. Secondly why would you want to stay on stock gingerbread when there are TONS of beautiful ICS roms to run. If you really want to be stock then root and flash a deodexed stock ROM. If not try MIUI or a tweaked out ICS ROM.

This is MIUI and it's beautiful.
Anyways...If your problem is with CWM in general then flash TWRP (great UI and all touch input) as far as rooting check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17300587 there are how to videos and what not. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9919944 for everything you need to get your phone connected to your computer (drivers, etc.) And here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21968928 for different recoveries.
Trust me, rooting and flashing custom firmware is the best thing you can do for your NS4G and is safe as long as you always follow instructions and keep a good stable nandroid backup just in case.

There is great support here in our forums. If you have troubles or questions with anything it's just a post away to ask. We're all pretty nice here. Lol. Mostly.

Its not that I am afraid to flash, I constantly flash roms but i am most comfortable with gingerbread and was wondering if i can just have it rooted without a custom recovery because I dont want to flash any other roms for the time being.

Only if you install a custom ROM. The stock ROM reflashes the stock recovery on every boot.
It can be disabled by removing or renaming /system/etc/install-recovery.sh though.

So I just got myself a GS3 and i am prepping my Skyrocket for sale. I was on CM9 and i did a factory reset/delete USB from the phone's settings. Then when i rebooted i was stuck on the CM9 boot logo for ever and ever. So i used this method to restore to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348 and everything went A1, my phone is back to orignal factory state as is just like the day i bought it. Then i plug into kies to upgrade to official ICS and it tells me my firmware is not compatible for the update. Bummer, so in reinstall all samsung software, kies and drivers and still the same issue. So i though it would be great just to root the phone and update it to CM9 but when i try to root this is what i get using 1click:

So now i dont know what to do, i cant upgrade the official way nor the unofficial way and my sales ad states it come with ICS and 2 buyers already backout because it was on gingerbread.
Anybody know WTF is this??
Just from personal experience dont use the oneclick method try the odin root method , seems to have less problems and it works flawlessly for me.

read this to return to true stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 u can use odin to flash stock rogers ics, u dont need kies to do it
thanks, will try that
The return to stock thread is really confusing... I have a rogers skyrocket unlocked using on fido, I wanna upgrade to ICS but the single click odin failed Im assuming its because that one is for the ATT skyrocket...how can i upgrade to ICS on my rogers skyrocket? I'm rooted...
Go to sammobile and download the Rogers (I727R) ics tar. Make sure you do a factory before you put your phone in download mode.
You can do it after but you may get some fc on first boot after flashing

I USED HTCDev!!
Yes the phone is unlocked! I had ICE DS 5.3 for 2 month installed i made upgrade to 6.0 and now wifi dont work. But FM Radio work supper.
I tried to install PG88IMG.zip via 4EXT Recovery and i get Instalation aborted is there some other way to do that?
I'm confused.
BYe,
Andrej
Did you flash the kernel as well?
No, how can I flash kernel and why, there is no mention in to do that when upgrading to 6.0. And whit what I must flash kernel some other version or patch???

If your phone has been unlocked then you need to flash the kernel every time you flash a new ROM. Technically you might, sometimes, get away with it - but it is best to ALWAYS flash it. Search for flash boot.img and you should find what you need.
So if I understand you, I must use boot.img from ICE_DS_v.6.0.zip and manual flash the kernel via "fastboot flash boot boot.img" ?
Thank you for answer.

That is possible, yes. I don't remember exactly, but i think 5.3 may have the unmodified stock ics kernel, which was probably what you had previously.

If I rememver exactly, 5.3 already has a tweaked amidabuddha kernel.
But probably the same as in an earlier version of ice_ds, I assume

Hi! If u r using Odin for the 1st time, then it's obvious that there has been some mistakes. Flash froyo 2.2.1 (4package firmware)of ur country (Indonesia) coz it contains bootloader. If ur phone becomes fine then u can flash Gingerbread 2.3.6 (Indonesian).
Remember: Use Odin 4.38 & ops file should be named like: Beni_v1.0.ops & install Samsung mobile drivers. Disable kies, antivirus & firewall.
Good luck...!!

We are talking about the S5670 here, right?
How comes you have an encryption option - what rom are you using?
I use cm 10.1.4 and there is no such option.
I found an ATT stock recovery, but I have not been able to find a T-Mobile stock recovery. I am trying to restore to stock using Odin with no luck. It keeps failing. I remember from other devices, you need to restore a stock recovery first to get the restore work properly.

Can you post a screenshot of what ODIN says? You may just have a bad download of the firmware. The full stock firmware contains everything. You should do a full wipe though before flashing in ODIN to get rid of any remnants of fact that your device was rooted. Only thing you can't reset is the Knox counter.
