Hello everyone.
So, the wifi problem on my N5 goes back some time ago; it happened for the first time about 2 weeks after i got it, middle november i'd say:
i always keep my wifi connected while at home and sometimes it just refuses to send data anymore. The signal bar doesn't drop, but the data just stops working. I don't remember what i did the first time it happened, but it just started working as intented after a few days.(I was on 4.4.4 back then).
Now I'm on 5.0.1 and it had been working right for some time, until 2 days ago i unplugged my router then plugged it back it. Later that day I noticed the issue is back. I have absolutely no idea what to do about it and it is irritating as hell.
Did any of you guys experience this before? If so, how did you fix it?
Also, is it possible that this is a driver issue on the phone side? All my other devices work just fine on wireless.
Thanks!

you may also try forgetting your network and re-logging back in. also check the wifi frequency band and of course rebooting your router can’t hurt.

I tried all that but with no success. I think the router might be the issue since it does have some glitches where it loses connectivity and it fixes after a reboot. I'll try with another router and report after.

I have done a full factory reset on my phone due to this issue, and it still happens. It doesn't just happen at home either, it happens everywhere I go. I am assuming at this point that it is a bug in 5.0/5.0.1 and hopefully it will be fixed in 5.0.2 (if the N5 ever see's this update).
If anyone has had any luck with this bug, please let me know.
I'm having the same issues. I'm now on my 4th router in as many months and I can't figure this out after testing just about every possible configuration of channels, frequencies and settings. We have about 10 devices connected in my home and the Nexus 5 is the only device with this problem. I'm at the point now that I just use LTE at home.
Yeah it's a 5.0.1 issue, if you've found your way to XDA you should try a custom ROM. Most are branched from the aosp 5.0.2 commits.

Did Lollipop rid the wifi options of "wifi optimization" and "avoid poor connections?" I used to keep those options unchecked for a more stable wifi connection.

But I had this same problem on 4.4.4 for a little while, that's why I was inclined to think it was something to do with my router.
Ahhh okay, yeah it very well could be.
I just had to replace my logic board due to faulty wifi, I got the always 'WiFi turning on' bug.

That setting checkbox was missing in advanced wifi settings since 5.0 (and the option was forced to "on")
According to this post this has been fixed in 5.0.2:

just wondering if anyone else has experienced issues with their wifi re-connecting after waking up from standby since 'upgrading' to 2.3.4? Mine used to be flawless, but now regularly experiences problems where it wont connect for ages or i have to restart the wifi or reboot.
Mine too would take awhile before re-connecting.
How long is "ages" for you? I never had to reboot the phone, but I have resorted to restarting wifi.
Yeah..weird, I have the same issues. Thank goodness I'm not the only one. Seems to take the wifi a min to kick in coming from standby. And its greyed out once it comes on...so goto takes ANOTHER minute for it to turn green! What gives?
Hopefully, this new patch will solve these issues...fingers crossed!

'Ages' would probably be a minute or so? This morning i had to exit the browser and restart wifi to get it working again. Not a major hassle but a bummer considering it worked so well before!
My Nexus S has the wi-fi re-connect issue as well. It takes a while to connect, sometimes it's immediate and somtimes up to two minutes.

Yeah Sprint is releasing an OTA fix July 11 that will make the phone have better 'signal acquisition'...we can only hope right?

I'm here writing on tapatalk and browsing and have noticed that all of a sudden the WiFi will go off, drop out and restart. I hadn't ticked the : best WiFi performance, which drains more battery, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I also have he app: power manager and I'm not sure if there is an app doing that to the WiFi.
Anyone else had this issue?
Edit: definitely having this issue. Best performance or going manual on the WiFi Settings seems to have settled it. Hope HTC comes up with an update for it...

I also tested the static rather than the automatic solution for the WiFi, and it tend to drop equally. Only way it doesn't drop seems to be if I use the: use best quality WiFi, which reduces the battery life tremendously!
By the way, this is not happening during te phone's sleep mode, but during normal operation.

Not sure if it's related, but there are definite wifi issues with the one s. Mines completely stock, no power managers etc. It locks onto wifi points that that have always worked well for me (work, home etc.) with my desire and never disconnects. It seems in this mode it uses much more power and even gets a little warm. I can have left home for 4 hours and it still thinks it's connected and then has no data connection. The only solution seems to be to disable and enable wifi again. It doesn't seem to be able to roam from ap to ap without getting stuck on one of them
I think this may be an issue with Android 4.0. I have a Transformer Prime tablet running 4.0 and I get the same thing. WiFi drops out for a few seconds and quickly reconnects. I have noticed that it only happens in the first 12-24 hours after my tablet has been restarted though. After about a day running solid it doesn't happen.
I had a Nexus Running 4.2 and the wifi was great so probably not Android , more radi problem as discussed on other threads
I'm getting mine replaced tomorrow just to see if that will improve things. Unfortunately I was not able to make sure that the handset's serial number

Update.
The WiFi signal on this current phone seems to be spot on. No signal drop with any case on or covering the top of the phone. Signsl doesn't go to sleep along with the phone being on idle and overall really pleased.
I must also add that this new phone seems to have a remarkably better battery life as well. With my usuall use of web, tapatalk, a couple of photos a bit of WiFi, continuous account sync etc, on auto brightness, im at 13:20 and I have the phone on 83% battery when on the previous handset with the WiFi problem I was eating up the battery really fast. Usually I was at about 60% by now

I had exactly the same issue. Since I have changed the "option" / "wifi"/ "settings" / "extended" / "keep WLAN active in standby" = "never" (I don't know the correct terms in English), I haven't seen that problem anymore. I seems that the issue is standby-related, WLAN rescan won't start properly when waking up.
However, I don't think that this issue is related to the issue mentioned by the TO - it's the opposite.
I just noticed this issue when I left for work this morning. I have "Best Wi-Fi Performance" enabled, which was mentioned as a fix in previous posts, but it does not appear to be helping. When I leave for work and get into my office about 5 miles away it still shows as being connected to my home wifi network, when I try to use data like going to a webpage etc, it says "Data Connection Lost". Its like the phone doesnt know how to disconnect from a wifi network. I have the latest update to 1.84.531.2 710RD and still seems to have this issue. Have there been any updates from HTC or T-MO on this issue?
To follow up on this issue, I have called HTC and T-Mobile to find out if it is a known issue. They both told me that they were aware of the issue and that HTC is asking the carriers to report the issues customers are having back up to them. HTC said they are working on a software update that resolves the Wi-Fi disconnect issue. The T-Mobile rep said to have anyone else who is experiencing the issue to either call T-Mobile if they are your carrier so they can report the issue, or call HTC directly.

Been having this issue too. Called up T-Mobile and since I'm still within the 20 day window for return, they are sending me a new device. The girl that helped me didn't even want to talk about the issue or if it's been happening a lot. She didn't even ask if I had tried any trouble shooting. Just sent out new phone with free standard shipping. Works for me I guess, just hope it's hardware related, though I suspect it's software. We will see.

I also disabled best wifi performance and have not noticed the issue since. I dont know if its because of the factory reset or because I have disabled best performance. I have also changed "keep wifi on during sleep" to never and that may have contributed to fixing the problem. I really have no way to tell, and now that it appears to be working correctly, I dont want to mess with it
So I purchased this N5 through TMobile on Wednesday and finally took it out the box yesterday and set it up. Now, I am on high speed wifi and whenever I try to watch youtube, it either freezes, force closes, or just stays on page showing loading.
With other apps/browser, it does the same thing. Either FC or keeps on loading. Is there a fix or should I get get a newer one from TMobile?
If you just got the device if take it back. It shouldn't be doing what it's doing. They'll probably tell you to do a factory reset which you could do to see if that fixes it.

Wifi and mobile data.
Funny thing is, I was over my brother's place last night (his phone is the one that's having issues), he connected his to wifi and I was on HSPA. I was able to connect and play videos on youtube while his hanged. Even when I connected to his wifi, mine would play almost immediately while his would hang/FC.
Both phones are N5, on same network, on same wifi, on same rom using same kernel.
i am currently using Resurrection Remix 5.0.2 but was using cm12 nightlys before. The problem is that
the data connection is good but once i loose the connection there is an exclamation mark next to the
signal bar so i presume thats the data lost. It then wont connect again untill i reboot the phone.I have tried
switching on and off data but still no joy..This never happened on kitkat. I thought the problem was CM
related hence why i tried the RR rom but exactly the same is happening. Someone sugested that it could be
the sim card but im not so sure as it works fine before lollipop.I surely can't be the only one experiencing
this? but by the same token i can't find any info on it either ..maybe says something!!
Hope someone can help as i want to stay on lollipop i do like it, maybe the official release will sort it out.
Thank you

It's a ROM issue (radio.img). I was facing same problem on earlier builds of BlissPop ROM, but not no issues..
If you are getting exclamation mark in 2 or more ROMs, then there is problem with your sim-card or the network operator.
I suggest you to contact your concerned network operator and take his help for the same. (If you are facing same issue on 2 or more ROMs, try out Stock ROM CM11s)
Thank you for your reply, so would it be possible to flash a modem from kitkat or would there be compatibility issues with that?

I'm also with Three and have lost my data connection. They replaced the sim on Tuesday and I'm sure it worked until the old number swapped to the new sim. I have a 321 simcard on order and I'll try that once it arrives. My phone is still running Kitkat.
I had no problems with kitkat, if it lost the connection it automatically connected again when I was back in an area with a signal. But this has got me beat, a new sim card and too many roms to count but still the same problem. I am a lorry driver and cover the whole of Scotland and signal is patchy at best and it's annoying to find out later on in the day that data was off and you didn't receive any messages or emails.. Some of them important..

I have exactly the same problem.
I'm from Spain.
I've discovered that if i set network type to LTE it seems to work right.
Today I've moved from blisspop to temasek.
The 3g reconnect doesn't work, as always.
I turn data and wifi off when I sleep so tomorrow I will confirm if LTE works also with temasek.
my connection has always been set on LTE but never makes any difference
At the weekend I installed the official OxygenOs, I have been driving all day and had to reboot the phone 4 times because of this problem, I did half wish that when an official release came it would maybe sort out the problem but no joy. So I can only think it's to do with the oneplus. I'm at a loss now and seriously don't want to go back to kitkat but it looks like this will be the only solution to the problem..

I've tested this night again and if I set network to LTE.
The test I've done is.
- Turn off data and wifi before to sleep.
- Turn off only data when I woke up.
The connection was successful almost inmediately.
Greetings. I ran into similar issue with the CM12s update.
Once I lose the mobile signal for whatever reason, the data connection is not restored. Only way to regain it, is by restarting the phone (haven't tested airplane mode). Sometimes even if I leave WiFi on for long time (overnight), I will not have data connection after turning off the WiFi. I use HSPA connection only, not LTE.
I can not recall having this issue on KitKat. Issue was on the first CM12s update and remains on the second one, both were installed clean, so clean install of the ROM will not fix it. I am not using any custom ROMs or kernels, only TWRP recovery.
Has anyone had such issue and maybe found a solution to this?

Well decided to a bit of searching, if you go into Settings -> Mobile Network Settings -> Network Operators and manually choose the network rather than the Auto Search option, it seems to have worked for me for the time being.
I am on the same boat as OP. The problems started after updating to Lollipop.
If anyone has found a solution, please let me know. I read about someone installing a 44S modem, but I'm unsure if this will permanently change system files (I wouldn't want it to) and I'm therefore hesitant.

^ this. If you type your password wrong. It will not say "obtaining IP address". It will just say "connecting"(or something like that)..then look like its connected then proceed to cycle reconnecting.
Just to chime in on this, picked up a Pixel yesterday and had the same issue with my 5ghz network. 2.4ghz works fine. Swapped it out for another Pixel today and will be setting it up tonight so will report back. I'm pretty sure mine was a hardware issue!
I wish Google would put a dialog box up saying that the password isn't working. I feel like a lot of people blame the phone/hardware. I've seen this happen on all of my nexus devices and it's ALWAYS because of the password being wrong. I just learned to pay attention to the behavior of the connection status. My passwords at home are ridiculously easy, so I never have the problem there. But it happened with my Pixel at work because I forgot to capitalize a letter.
I guess I'm not saying that it couldn't be hardware related. But I personally would double check my router settings to verify I'm typing what I remember the password to be.

Phone is completely up to date! Not a hardware issue, just setting up the new one and same issue! Not a password issue either as it connects to the Internet for a minute then drops out and connects/disconnects constantly. Only happens with the 5ghz network. I've tried messing around with the channels and everything but nothing seems to work!! Wish I knew what was causing it!!

Have you tried resetting your router, just for giggles? You didn't perhaps go into developer settings and check the aggressive wifi to cellular handoff option did you? All I can tell you from experience is that I had the same thing happen and it fixed itself real quick after I did the quick little update. You can also try leaving the area so it drops wifi then going back and seeing if it will remember and connect better the 2nd time. Sorry I can't be more help...
Cannot for the life of me work this out. Tried every configuration I can think of with my 5ghz network and same issue every time. Maybe a future update will sort it out?
Had a WiFi issue with my first pixel. The phone wouldn't even try to connect to 5ghz. And on 2.4, it would drop signal and connect and reconnect constantly. I had them send me a new one and its perfect. No issues whatsoever! You guys probably have a hardware issue. I even tried the system image that Verizon dropped, even though I'm not Verizon and I still had the issue on the first pixel.
Nick
I had the same issue. It all started after I changed a wifi setting on Pixel XL. I changed to Keep Wifi On During Sleep to "Only When Plugged In" and then couldn't connect to Wifi. It would for a little bit after restarting phone but after first disconnect it would Fail to Connect.
I changed setting to "Always" and no issues anymore with wifi.

My coworker has a new Pixel, been using it for about 10 days without issue but today he came into work looking for help because his Wi-Fi isn't working. It does what OP stated, constantly cycling between "saved", "connecting", "authenticating", "obtaining IP address", and then back to "saved". He reset his home router, was on the phone with Verizon(?) for an hour, he's tried my moto X's 2.4GHz and 5GHz hotspot here at work and can't I can't get it to work. He said the Verizon rep told him it was the SIM card but that's bs. We tried with no SIM installed, no change. We did a reboot into safe mode, no luck. I tried booting into the factory recovery to clear cache but it appears that's not an option. He doesn't want to do a factory reset, I think he's going to get a new one. Will see if they make him do a factory reset prior to replacing or not.
*Edit* Verizon gave him a new Pixel...
I've begun experiencing similar behavior after the VZW update to NDE63X. I can only comment on 2.4GHz as that's all my router has. I doesn't seem to be demolishing the battery, but it's annoying when a web page, or part of a page doesn't load.
Is he rooted or does he have any customizations flashed to his kernel?

No, 100% stock. I was actually trying to convince him to unlock before it got patched, I guess good thing he didn't? What's messed up is that it took over 10 days for it to quit working. What would have happened if he was outside that 15 day window Verizon has. What if he had unlocked it and rooted it? What's to say his new replacement doesn't do the same thing in a month from now?

He still can the exploit wasn't patched in the Nov update from what I've heard. I bought the warranty so I can return mine no matter what!

Just to chime in on this, picked up a Pixel yesterday and had the same issue with my 5ghz network. 2.4ghz works fine. Swapped it out for another Pixel today and will be setting it up tonight so will report back. I'm pretty sure mine was a hardware issue!

I just received my Pixel and the 5 ghz channel frequently disconnects then connects again when browsing. The problem happens on the 2.4 ghz channel too. All my other devices work on my router and I have the most recent firmware (I will try a router firmware reset). It happens on both my routers.
Is this a hardware problem or firmware?
Edit: I reset my wifi and started to reconfigure. There were no problems until I activated ipv6 on my router and the wifi started to drop out again.
here is a thread someone posted in the google product support

Other users having this issue have IPv6 activated? Both my routers are from ASUS.
