Potential WiFi issue? - HTC One S

I'm here writing on tapatalk and browsing and have noticed that all of a sudden the WiFi will go off, drop out and restart. I hadn't ticked the : best WiFi performance, which drains more battery, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I also have he app: power manager and I'm not sure if there is an app doing that to the WiFi.
Anyone else had this issue?
Edit: definitely having this issue. Best performance or going manual on the WiFi Settings seems to have settled it. Hope HTC comes up with an update for it...

I also tested the static rather than the automatic solution for the WiFi, and it tend to drop equally. Only way it doesn't drop seems to be if I use the: use best quality WiFi, which reduces the battery life tremendously!
By the way, this is not happening during te phone's sleep mode, but during normal operation.

Not sure if it's related, but there are definite wifi issues with the one s. Mines completely stock, no power managers etc. It locks onto wifi points that that have always worked well for me (work, home etc.) with my desire and never disconnects. It seems in this mode it uses much more power and even gets a little warm. I can have left home for 4 hours and it still thinks it's connected and then has no data connection. The only solution seems to be to disable and enable wifi again. It doesn't seem to be able to roam from ap to ap without getting stuck on one of them

I think this may be an issue with Android 4.0. I have a Transformer Prime tablet running 4.0 and I get the same thing. WiFi drops out for a few seconds and quickly reconnects. I have noticed that it only happens in the first 12-24 hours after my tablet has been restarted though. After about a day running solid it doesn't happen.

I had a Nexus Running 4.2 and the wifi was great so probably not Android , more radi problem as discussed on other threads

I'm getting mine replaced tomorrow just to see if that will improve things. Unfortunately I was not able to make sure that the handset's serial number

Testing the new one s that just came through the post on regards to the WiFi issues.
Looks like first impressions that its stable but having said that,y sim card is still on the other handset. I don't know if that has anything to do with it...

Coming on the other phone now, as typing the WiFi signal sometimes drops..

Mine is opposite where I have no issues while using the phone, however, when phone goes into sleep mode, it loses wifi. Comes on auto when using phone again.

Exactly the same symptoms on mine (stock Orange UK). Hopefully we will get a fix soon, as its a pain.

It seems that the replacement I got is working atm

Update.
The WiFi signal on this current phone seems to be spot on. No signal drop with any case on or covering the top of the phone. Signsl doesn't go to sleep along with the phone being on idle and overall really pleased.
I must also add that this new phone seems to have a remarkably better battery life as well. With my usuall use of web, tapatalk, a couple of photos a bit of WiFi, continuous account sync etc, on auto brightness, im at 13:20 and I have the phone on 83% battery when on the previous handset with the WiFi problem I was eating up the battery really fast. Usually I was at about 60% by now

I had exactly the same issue. Since I have changed the "option" / "wifi"/ "settings" / "extended" / "keep WLAN active in standby" = "never" (I don't know the correct terms in English), I haven't seen that problem anymore. I seems that the issue is standby-related, WLAN rescan won't start properly when waking up.
However, I don't think that this issue is related to the issue mentioned by the TO - it's the opposite.

I just noticed this issue when I left for work this morning. I have "Best Wi-Fi Performance" enabled, which was mentioned as a fix in previous posts, but it does not appear to be helping. When I leave for work and get into my office about 5 miles away it still shows as being connected to my home wifi network, when I try to use data like going to a webpage etc, it says "Data Connection Lost". Its like the phone doesnt know how to disconnect from a wifi network. I have the latest update to 1.84.531.2 710RD and still seems to have this issue. Have there been any updates from HTC or T-MO on this issue?

To follow up on this issue, I have called HTC and T-Mobile to find out if it is a known issue. They both told me that they were aware of the issue and that HTC is asking the carriers to report the issues customers are having back up to them. HTC said they are working on a software update that resolves the Wi-Fi disconnect issue. The T-Mobile rep said to have anyone else who is experiencing the issue to either call T-Mobile if they are your carrier so they can report the issue, or call HTC directly.

Been having this issue too. Called up T-Mobile and since I'm still within the 20 day window for return, they are sending me a new device. The girl that helped me didn't even want to talk about the issue or if it's been happening a lot. She didn't even ask if I had tried any trouble shooting. Just sent out new phone with free standard shipping. Works for me I guess, just hope it's hardware related, though I suspect it's software. We will see.

I did a factory reset on my phone and have been having much better luck with the WiFi issue. I think its definitely software related.

Not here. Factory reset was first thing I did (and always do) after applying the latest update.

I just noticed that on my phone as well. If I set it to beat performance the WiFi signal goes crazy. So I uncheck it and it works "normal"

I also disabled best wifi performance and have not noticed the issue since. I dont know if its because of the factory reset or because I have disabled best performance. I have also changed "keep wifi on during sleep" to never and that may have contributed to fixing the problem. I really have no way to tell, and now that it appears to be working correctly, I dont want to mess with it

Grey signal with x wont reconnect

I have this issue when im at work where i get crap att coverage where eventually from being low for so long and staying on wifi my phone signal goes to zero and a grey x shoes up above them.
This wouldnt be so bad but it wont reconnect with a reboot or airplane mode reset which means if i dont check my phone i get no calls or info.
Is this normal? Is there a fix?
Thanks

This is an old issue. I'm not sure when the fix happened or what ATT radio would fix it for you but there is a simple (ish) solution. Basically, whats happening is that when your phone loses signal for an extended period of time it shuts off the radio and then cannot restart it. Using NoBars will stop your phone's radio from dying like that and will just periodically poll for signal.
That will fix the issue but just to satisfy my own curiosity, on your SDcard are there a bunch of files called Radio Dump and then a bunch of numbers?
Sorry posted on my phone and didnt notice the grammar errors
Yes i have the radio dump files but havent checked since installing the F1 radio.
I will try that app since this issue has followed me on multiple roms and radios
If there was a fix i havent gotten it
Thanks man
Edit
Just installed nobars but realized its a battery saver like juice defender
I will keep my hopes up tho
This ONLY happns when at my desk at work where att has no dark hold on me

you could try manually resetting your radio if that is actually the problem. just dial *#*#4636#*#* next time you're at your desk and go to phone information. if you scroll down it should say either turn off radio or turn on radio. try turning it on if it's already off, or resetting it by turning it off and then on again. I don't think this would be a permanent fix though. just a temporary solution when the problem arises.

Nobars will shut off your radio and stop it from dying. Trust me it works. My wife and I used it foe months waiting for the issue to be resolved. The radio dumps mean you're having the same issue.

I actually go into the carrier menu when i install a new radio anyway. Going in and out of airplane mode resets the radio but the problem is if I dont actually look at my phone (in my pocket) i wont know the radio shut off and can go through the day without getting any contact. I know its not the rom cause Im on stock. I know its not the radio cause I have tried about every one.
Its got to be a mix of crappy ATT service (which makes me wonder if resigning was worth this phone for free) and the nexus s hardware.
I am seeing if noBars will help. You would think this would be something google would fix ASAP tho as its happened since day one almost.

It is odd since this was a massive issue from day one of the Nexus S but that was before any of the other variants and it was fixed before any of the other variants launched. Since that fix, I've not heard of anyone having the issue any more with any variant. Part of the issue for my wife and I was that we lived in an area where there was really no good cell coverage from any company, so we stayed with T-Mo in spite of that knowing that we were moving soon to an area with great T-mo coverage, but being out of service so much resulted in similar issues as you've had: we would be constantly restarting our phones to see if there was anything we were missing. I do believe this will work for you, and I hope you find a permanent solution soon.
Thanks for the tip but i guess i am the lucky guy who still has the issue lol
Maybe hardware related? I will see what ice cs brings me
For today nobars helped but i did notice some batt drain from it but very minimal so its a keeper for now

How is Wi-Fi?

Seems in the few reviews I've read Wi-Fi signal strength is not all that great, and this worries me. Last year when I had the HTC Sensation it also had really bad Wi-F reception, often dropping signal when I went in certain rooms in my house.
Would really appreciate some feedback from those already using the Rogers or AT&T version of this phone. Is Wi-Fi signal strength good, bad, or somewhere in between?
I personally don't have my phone yet, should be getting it this friday. However other people have been reporting that the Rogers version has had spotty wifi reception.

Yeah that thread actually made me create this one. I want to know if others are having issues or if its just certain routers.
Hopefully someone with the AT&T version can chime in pretty soon.
might be worth researching if it was an 802.11a/b/g/n router it was communicating with, and what chipset the router uses. Make/model can figure that out though.
Yep, I can confirm that the WiFi has been a bit spotty. Not horrible. When I'm in my living room, maybe 10-15 feet from the router, it's aces. In my bedroom though, through 2 walls and maybe 50 feet away, it can go up and down, but I've only noticed it once or twice in the past week.
Once, however, as I was leaving work for the day, the phone reported that it was still connected to WiFi, even once I got a mile or so down the road. I had to turn wifi off/on again before it resumed normal operation.

Yeah, I am hoping that the AT&T version doesn't have the same problem too. I know that the Rogers and AT&T version are the same hardware but it seems like it is a software issue.
Hopefully, *fingers crossed* the AT&T version doesn't come with the same problem and has already fixed the problem in the software.

I think I read on here or Android Central that someone played with one in the AT&T store and said the Wi-Fi was fluctuating like crazy.
So I'm sure the AT&T will be the same.

Yeah, someone here wrote that and it will likely have the same problem unfortunately. However, we don't know at the store how far away the router is or even how good the quality of the router is.
So you have to make sure you base your analysis on where the problem lies by first having a baseline. Meaning right now I know that with my iPhone my wifi work very well and has great coverage with my Cisco E4200. So once I get my HOX I can then compared it to see what the difference is.
Follow a process like that then we will be able to tell for sure if the AT&T model does have a wifi problem and it is a problem with the handset and not some other external factor.
Same problems here ...

Regrettably, I seem to be having similar problems. Like you, I also get situations where my phone reports that it's still connected to my WiFi network, both at work or at home, yet I could be 1-2km down the road.
I certainly hope this issue is resolved soon. I use an automatic profile manager that needs to detect WiFi connections/disconnects accurately.

I'm experiencing ongoing WiFi issues.. Mostly just signal completely dropping off randomly and inconsistent speeds. Again, I haven't tested with the "Best wifi performance" turned on.

that's exactly what that option does. starts to kill the wifi in order to improve battery life. I think it increases speed/range when the screen is on, but it's still never set to maximum power/speed.
I think we are going to have the same issues as the Rogers version. I've played with the demo unit at the Corp store several times and had wifi drop out about half of those. The signal strength was full, but that's all I know of their setup. Today I had to turn wifi off and then back on before it would even connect. It's a bummer that HTC has done such wonderful job on everything else, but we still have spotty wifi on their flagship device. I am preordering tomorrow anyway though. Hope it can be fixed with a software update down the line.

I'll test with this setting on today and see how it effects my wifi performance / battery. When I was running b/g/n on my router I did speedtests with the option both on and off and it made absolutely no difference in the speeds and the connection would still drop off. Literally right next to it my iPhone constantly got 6-8 mbps.

I remember with the dreaded HTC Sensation, wifi would often cut in and out and data speeds would be very poor. Looks like HTC's bad habits didn't die young.
AS i mentioned in previous posts. I am having the same wifi issues and i'm on my second HTC one xl. They both have poor wifi performance. I also have the problem where it sometimes stays connected when i leave the house and im 3 km's away.
Feel a little better as the International version got a new update tonight which supposedly resolves the Wi-Fi bug. So hopefully we'll get an update relatively soon.

That's not the exact same problem if you're losing wifi. So far, only mobile data is dying for me.
It looks like Tmo or HTC fubar'd the radio with this release.
If you have WiFi problems, get WiFi fixer from the market, it will say it was unsuccessful then reboot. it should work, after, even though it said unsuccessful.

My Wifi is still completly dead. Are there any other ways?
WiFi working fine for me. Will test data tomorrow when back in coverage.
Well, I spoke too soon. My wifi is unreliable too. It seems to disconnect very frequently when the phone is sleeping even though I have 'always on' checked and have toggled it off and back on just to make sure.
thanks a lot tmo. I had a reliable radio before this update. I should have listened to that little voice telling me to wait.
Here's an exchange I just had with tmo support.
Customer Chat
%Mary G: I apologize for the inconvenience. What is the issue with the update? I can help with that.
michael harrison: I've had my phone almost two weeks and had very reliable 4G (Dallas area) and mostly reliable wifi. The only problem with wifi is that sometimes I'd get back home and it wouldn't automatically connect. I'd have to turn wifi off and back on. Except for that, the radio was solid.
Bluetooth was also reliable though the range was only about 20'
Since the update, 4G, wifi and bluetooth are very unreliable.
Mobile data drops out for no reason (I can be sitting in one location and it will completely disappear), wifi is turning off or losing the connection frequently while the phone is sleeping (I have the option to keep wifi on always turned on) and bluetooth has a range of about 4'
%Mary G: I see that our Engineering is working on this issue for the HTC One S. If you want to go back to the old version, we can do master reset for the phone.
%Mary G: For that step, I apologize, at this time we are not able to provide additional assistance for your issue via live chat. Please contact one of our Technical Care representatives at 1-800-937-8997 from a phone other than your T-Mobile handset. Master freakin' reset?!
I noticed that my 4G seems to go to sleep and does no work until I for a lack of a better word "Wake up the phone"
One more for the radio-problem pile...
It appears that if I'm on Wifi and I start a GPS app (like my tracks) and drive out of wifi range, I'll never get a mobile data connection. Wifi cut off (at least, the icon disappeared) but even closing the app (and verifying that the gps icon went away) doesn't result in mobile data coming on line.
I had to go into airplane mode and back out. The I ended up with a 4g connection.
Is it just me or does the throughput speed now suck AFTER the update?
I used to get 12-14mbps down and 6-7 up, and now im getting 4.5 down, 1.5 up.
Seriously T-Mobile? How hard is it to release something that WORKS?

Funny you blame T-Mobile as they are NOT software developers. You need to be pointing that finger at HTC.
can't shut off the phone after update
I got my new HTC One S yesterday and the first thing I did after activating it was a manual check for updates.
I knew I should have checked the forums first but I'm an update junkie.
I guess I have been running CM7 for too long and I forgot about how bad the HTC OTA to 2.3.3 on my Inspire 4G was.
I haven't seen a post yet about not being able to turn off the phone after the update.
I press and hold the power button on the top and the Shut Down/ Airplane mode/ Restart menu comes up.
I select Shut Down and the phone does what looks like a Fast Boot restart instead of shutting down. I checked the settings and confirmed that Fast Boot is turned off.
What happens is after I select Shut Down I get the T-Mobile good buy animation and then I briefly see the previous shut down menu and then I get the T-Mobile Android rocket animation and then I'm back in the OS. No black screen, no white screen with the HTC logo and it all happens very quickly.
I tried a Restart and that does a normal full shut down and restart where I get the good buy animation and the screen goes black for a second then I get the white screen with the HTC logo then the rocket animation then the OS. All very normal looking.
Holding down the power button for about 10 seconds to force a power off does shut down the phone but it turns back on 3 seconds later with a normal looking start up.
This is a brand new phone that had the factory shipped ROM and no apps even installed. It was able to be powered off before I installed the OTA.
I tried this with the case on and off to make sure it wasn't the case putting pressure on the buttons.
This isn't a huge deal as I don't normally leave my phone off but I can't take this on an airplane as some carriers still make you turn off all electronic devices during take off and landing.
Update: I was going to take eminembdg advice and go to a Tmo store and try to get the phone replaced after work today. But after showing the nifty shutdown reboot bug to a few friends the phone now actually shuts down correctly and stays off. I guess it's like when you take your car to the mechanic because its making this funny noise and then it stops making the noise just as you pull up in front of the shop.
My data speed got slower too.

Master freakin' reset?!

My wifi started saying error every time I tried to turn it on. After speaking with htc they told me that I needed to do a master reset because It is impossible to downgrade to an earlier version or even the stock one without resetting. So stupid me believes and resets, NOPE still on the newest update with a cleanly wiped phone.

+1 here. My data/signal is only a small fraction better. My connections still cut out or go completely retarded like this.

Wifi turns off when signal is weak (1.85)

While using the phone in a spot with poor wifi reception, I've noticed the wifi icon completely goes away sometimes. It will then pop back on shortly thereafter. Is this normal behavior when it thinks the wifi signal is completely gone?
I just picked one up yesterday and have been having issues. In my bedroom it will read 2 bars, drop to one, then shut off. Comes back on within seconds. This phone seems to have WiFi issues for a lot of users.

In the same room as my gateway full signal it stays connected no issues.

Same problem here, but it also happens when it says i have full bars. I need to enable best wifi performance to fix it. My gsii never had this problem...
This is exactly how mine behaves too. I'm in the room with my router so I normally have full bars (and should) but every once in a while the signal goes away and comes right back 2 seconds later. I've tested it with 2 routers, a linksys running dd-wrt and a d-link one, both have the same results.

International One X has issues too. The newest update 1.85 was supposed to fix some WiFi issues along with other bug fixes, and it doesn't seem to have helped us. Let's not assume they even know what the problem is at this point.

I don't think what I am experiencing is a hardware issue at all. Im not even moving the phone when this happens, and my phone passes the squeeze test. I'm confident this means it has to be software related.

This is kind of an old/dead thread by now, but I just wanted to share my experience with wifi on the One X.
I'm also having problems, but I'm currently running a nightly (though very stable) build of CM10 on my One X and still have wifi issues. This COULD be hardware related, in that it's just crappy hardware (though it could also be software related if CM10 is built using wifi "code" (not really sure what the correct term for the wifi stuff in the software is ) from the stock software)
I'm sitting at work right now, for example, and every once in a while the wifi will disconnect. When connected it shows 2-3 wifi bars, when it's NOT connected, my wifi network shows up as "not in range" .
same type of thing has happened at my house. I thought my phone was defective so I traded it in for a replacement at best buy. Same issue. Such a shame becuase I really like everything else about this phone and wifi was never an issue on my last HTC device.
kernel changes affect wifi. some of the cm10 builds have known wifi issues.
i would never think of returning a phone because of an experience with a custom rom, since the phone wasn't built to run that rom.
always revert to full stock and see if you still have the issue. also updated ota/ruu are made to fix issues also. at&t rom doesn't have many stock wifi issues, but you can always run into issues with wifi access point incompatibilities.

Still wifi issues

I've had wifi issues since I purchased my htc one x for AT&T in may. I have had the hone replaced and the issue was never resolved and I'm kid of fed up with it for the fact that everyone I know who has an android device other then a one x don't have these issues. Issue seems to be Interment but happens a lot actually all the time.
Basically my issue is I have wifi turned on sometimes I lose connection.i notice this due to delayed alerts at times and when I'm using the phone such as on the play store, Facebook or any app that uses the I telnet every once in a while ill get a connection loss message and have to wait for the Internet to come back, usually comes back quick but still very annoying. Another ways can tel is when the phone is in sleep mode is when it happens the most. For example ill unlock the screen at times then all of a sudden I receive all my alerts such as gmail, google talk and any other alert that never came through b c of loss of connection. I also notice a lot when I open google talk right after I unlock my screen that it says I'm offline, then after a few I see it come online and if I had any google talk messages they then come through. I also see the time stamps when this happens, like emails come in and google talk messages and they can be anywhere from like 2-15 mins delayed at times.
I have also performed various of tests when the phone is asleep and I s end myself an email or google talk message and it does not come in until I unlock the phone. FYI this is Interment does not happen all the time but happens very often.
Are you guys still having issues with wifi ? Will getting a replacement possibly resolve the issue or sis this a known issue that cannot be fixed? I love the phone but sick and tire of not receiving all my alerts in real time. This is the first android phone with this type of issue and so frustrated.
Have you checked your wifi settings to make sure it's staying connected while the phone is asleep?

Yes of course checked all bases including forums for the last couple of months. Please note as per my op even when I'm using the phone sometimes I get lost connection errors even while using the Facebook app etc like google play store and other apps. So although while asleep seems to happen the most it also happens during normal use.
This is a known issue with many HTC phones. Even if you have WiFi to never sleep, when your display turns off the WiFi goes into some sort of battery saver mode. It doesn't turn off completely so you get your alerts eventually. I have not found a working solution short of flashing a custom Rom. HTC knows about this but hasn't fixed it. They think it is working as it should...

Thanks for clarifying this for me. If you flash a rom like for example cm10 or other rooms it can resolve this issue? Funny bc if wifi is shut off on just data works good, but the whole point is to use wifi as much as possible since I only have 3gb limited. I was thinking of upgrading to a one x+ but I'm afraid it will have the same issue as the normal, one x. This makes me want to go with a different company such as Samsung etc.. Anyways thanks for your help.
