The device is a Note Edge, but it seems to affect all Samsung phones w/ fingerprint sensor, S5, Note 4, and Edge.
I did a full TWRP Nandroid. The setup had fingerprints registered and used as screen lock. After restore, the fingerprints/backup (alternate) password no longer works.
I was able to unlock the phone using Android Device Manager, so I was able to switch the screen lock to pattern. At this point, I am unable to clear the 3 fingerprints that are registered. Mind you, I know the correct backup password, it's just that the phone keeps telling me that it is incorrect. It also does not accept any of my registered fingerprints. Because of this, I am unable to delete/unregister those fingerprints/password.
I do not want to hard reset and start over. TiBu backup/restore is not good enough, too many other settings to redo. This is why I'm offering $25 to the first person who helps me successfully wipe the registered fingerprints/backup password.
Observations: A hard reset (clearing /data) in fact solves the problem. This tells me that the info is stored in /data somewhere.
I tried a hard reset, register my fingerprints, and restored /data. Same problem. This also confirms that whatever is in /data can be removed to fix this problem.
I tried to delete the cache for fingerprint, no joy. I deleted data/data/com.android.samsung.fingerprint files (db, etc.), no joy.

bump. I will offer another $25 for a solution other than hard reset. I can't access private mode where I have photos that need to be moved to a new rom

I don't know if I can help you guys, but I can try guiding somewhere, send me a PM with your email so that I we can use Google Hangouts for a better way of me seeing the /data structure for your device.
I've checked one of the threads and it seems there's a "Fingerprints" apps, that cannot have its data cleared, however maybe you can try backing up the app with Titanium Backup and then trying to recover only the app. Just a random idea.

Suggest to make you sign in to find my phone and follow steps to erase all data on your mobile using your google account! Thank you for the $25 just keep it! To help good and nice was my concerned!

Regarding the problem I described in the original post, here is the solution.

For the password, you can use Android Device Manager to wipe it. Be sure to thank freeza.

But i've no problem with lock screen (set by pin).
I've only stored fingerprints that aren t recognised anymore. And neither password. Think been an anomaly when changed ROM, even with usual wipes.
So I am definitely trying to ERASE stored fingerprints.

You re very kind, but erased 2 times template but nothing particolar happened.

I did the following and those stored fingerprints were removed.
TWRP>Advanced>File Manager
data\system\users\0
remove the fingerprint and security xml files.

locked out of my Samsung Galaxy S3 which doesn't recognize gmail password

My friend entered the pattern-swipe password too many times, which made my GS3 lock up and force me "To unlock, sign in with [my] Google account". So, I did that many times to no avail. I tried all 3 of my gmail accounts even though I know which one specifically that associated with the google play account as I had bought an application a few weeks back and found the receipt of that app in my main email. Next, I changed the passwords to all the accounts and tried them again. Then after that I changed all my passwords to strictly numerical passwords so my passwords had no letters in them as I thought perhaps my phone was auto-capitalizing the first letter of my password -- didn't work. I've turned my phone on and off multiple times, taken out the batter and sim card multiple times as well. Also, it's important to note that I attempted to log in with and without the domain name: "emailaddress" and "[email protected]" and that I assume the Wi-Fi is turned off due to the fact that manually turned it off since I was on a cruise at the time that was charging $23 per every half hour of internet... I also turned off the data inside the scroll down menu and then turned on airplane mode; however, I was able to turn off airplane mode via holding down my power button and clicking on the airplane mode button. I'm pretty sure that the data is on now, at least when I try to type in my password.
I called google: the woman told me to turn my phone on and off and to make sure I had the right password -- she was clueless
I talked to Samsung online: they told me that Verizon had unlock codes...

(I didn't set up dropbox or any backup service for that matter) Does verizon backup assistant plus backup information on your phone without you having to set it up? Is the password that I need to supply the same one as my gmail password?
How can I fix this?

not sure if doable, but I'd try booting into the recovery menu. It usually is done by holding a combination "volume-down + home +power" or "v-up+-home+_power". Once you get there, one of the options should be factory reset.

Wow! You've done everything. Possibly changing the password made the situation worse? It wasn't letting you in regardless. Wow... sucks about your pictures and videos... god damn thing. God damn friend.

If you're completely stock, factory reset from settings, privacy should get you back to the set up wizard or whatever its called. If rooted and custom recovery is installed, boot in to recovery and do a restore or data factory reset. Anything on your SD card should be safe.

Also, I should note that my goal here is to recover my pictures/videos. I do know that the factory reset is an option; however, that wouldn't allow me to retrieve my photos/videos as my 32g stock verizon galaxy s3 didn't come with an sd card, nor did I insert one, so all the pictures and videos are saved onto the harddrive.
Do you guys know if the harddrive is partitioned so that photos/videos are saved in the event of a factory reset?

When you connect it to your computer it should bring up a "Phone" drive, Inside that there should be a folder with all of your pictures and videos. Are you not seeing that at all?
And no, if you factory reset you will lose everything on the internal sdcard
Check your Google accounts. Every now and then, they get hacked or spammed and Google will lock them. Check the account online and perhaps re-set your password. If that doesn't work... you may be hosed.

There is a "phone" drive that pops up as "SCH-I535", and inside of this drive there are 0 items. When I look at the properties the only info it gives me are:
model name
manufacturer
firmware version
serious number
battery life percentage
Yeah, nothing really useful in there.

I already changed the passwords multiple times to test that out :[
Did you happen start start Google + ? If so, then it should have stored your photos/videos in your Google + account.
Otherwise; I think you have to reset...

When I originally did my phone I used the rooted stock image image (root66) found here. The original non-rooted images are available in a different thread in the same forum.
Ok just to clarify a few things that have been mentioned in the thread:
If you don't have usb debugging enabled then your phone cannot communicate with your pc so ALWAYS enable that as soon as you get your phone even if you never plan on using it (just in case). Without usb debugging enabled you cannot use any of the backup functions in the S3 ToolKit.
You cannot access internal storage if you are locked out and cannot get past the lock screen for security reasons. If you do not have any security set then you can access internal storage by turning the phone on.
Performing a NAND backup in cwm will not back your data/media folder as it could potentially require a 16/32/64GB backup file if your whole internal storage was used up. For this reason you could not recover any data from internal storage using this method.
Performing a wipe in recovery will NOT format the data/media partition so you will not lose any data on there. I just tried it to make sure and the system is reset but everything on internal storage is still there. This was tested on a custom rom and using cwm recovery 6.0.1.0.
As you dont have usb debugging enabled then your only option to get the phone working again is to wipe from recovery. If it wipes your internal storage then I apologise but there is really nothing else you can do.

He has stated that his phone doesn't have usb debugging enabled so adb commands will not work.

Though, I guess it's somewhat of a good thing that this happened since I was never interested in understanding how android works before. Now, I'm planning on playing around with it once I wipe it. [Completed] Can't set pin or password, sd card unmounting

Hello everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Omega Rom android 4.4.2
I installed an anti theft app called 'Android Lost'.
I installed it on my phone and went on to their site to try out some of the commands after it had registered with my google account and whatever else it does. I sent a command to my phone to lock it with a pin. My phone received the command but it didn't do what it was supposed to do. It removed the pattern lock that was on my phone and left it open to unlock without any sort of password or pin. I tried the command again and it did not work.
I gave up as I was in a rush to leave and left the house. I then tried to set a pin on my phone again and the option wasn't grayed out or anything but when I selected it and set the pin, my phone would freeze and then after a minute it would unfreeze but "swipe" would be selected. I was able to set a pattern but nothing higher security than that. Also, even when pattern was selected and I tried to set a pin, it would set it back to "swipe". I also noticed that now I am always getting a message that says "my sd card can now be removed safely" even when I didn't select for it to be removed.
I uninstalled the app and it unregistered me from the servers and all of that, but everything is still the same. Still getting the sd card message, and still can't set a pin.
I have tried the method of incorrectly entering my pattern and using google to change to a pin, that didn't work, just set it to swipe and the sd card message was still appearing.
I also tried clearing all credentials like someone mentioned, but the option is grayed out so I can't select it, and my sd card isn't encrypted and either is my internal storage.
I even went as far as manually going to each credential and disabling it, this did not fix anything either.
Today after not having any replies on the Android Lost website, I decided to factory restore my phone after backing everything up.
This, to my surprise, still did not fix the problem. Now I have a wiped phone and still can't set a pin, and am still being told my SD card can be safely removed.
I tried factory restoring several times, still no fix.
I am so lost at what to do, maybe there is a cache I can clear or something on top of restoring the phone to clear the credentials as they all seem to be the same still after restore, or maybe it has something to do with my google account, or a server still sending commands to my phone or has set a lock on it. I'm not sure.

Lollipop - Enabled encryption. Not sure if it worked

Hey guys
I flashed the factory images last night effectively wiping my Nexus 5 and starting from scratch. I did not restore apps and settings either. After I manually installed a bunch of my apps back and changed around a few settings, I decided to enable encryption. However, I don't think it enabled properly.
First, I had not set a PIN lock on my phone yet at the time.
When I decided to enable encryption and go through the process, it didn't ask me to enter a PIN.
It seemingly completed encrypting the phone. When I go back to the security menu, it says "Encrypted".
However, I am not prompted to enter a PIN upon booting the phone (not talking about the lock screen PIN).
So, it seems like it didn't work but I'm not sure. Has anyone else enabled encryption yet?
and yes, I saw the performance degradation that comes with enabling encryption but I'd rather have the security.
definitely sounds like there's an issue there. Do you have a custom recovery? If so, you could boot into that, pull some data and see if it opens. If it does, yeah its not encrypted.
Not worth mentioning degradation. All encryption always has and always will have performance degradation. It's par for the course

Not sure, but i think it's designed to works just like that, the encryption key is not the PIN anymore but something (random?) that is stored somewhere on the phone.
that would protect the data in case someone tries to read it directly from the phone's memory, but useless if you don;t have a PIN/PASSWORD.
I avoided encryption before for exactly that reason (requiring a password to boot). If I lose the phone I want the person that found/stole it to be able to at least boot it. if the person is not a thief there's a contact number so they can call me to give it back. if he/she's a thief well, as long as it's on I can call it, track it, wipe it. even brick it.
by not being able to boot it, the chances of getting it back are 0 if the battery dies or is dead!

I went ahead and wiped the phone again. I reinstalled lollipop and made sure to enable a lockscreen PIN before I enabled encryption. It seems to have encrypted properly. It prompts me for my PIN at boot up now.
You make a good point about encryption making it more difficult for someone to get a hold of me if I lose the phone though.

My work Exchange server enforces a security policy to the phone which forces you to enable encryption. So I went ahead and did that, and the email app is still saying that encryption needs to be enabled. When I reboot the phone I never get prompted for a PIN to decrypt the device, yet in the settings screen it says it is encrypted.
I'm going to have to re-flash. Is it possible the issue is caused by leaving the bootloader unlocked? or is this is a bug?
EDIT: Update. Reflashed, but first thing I did was relock the bootloader and enable a security screenlock PIN, *then* encrypted the phone. Now it's prompting me for a PIN on boot and looks like it's worked. Hope the Exchange email policy stays happy this time, as it worked before for about a day before it complained about the lack of encryption
this worked for me also
I did what was stated below and it worked....
1. reflashed,
2. locked bootloader
3. created lock pin
4. encrypted, THEN
5. added MDM control (MAAS360) and exchange email.
It seems to work OK now.

If you set up a screen lock pin the phone will ask you then if you would like the PIN to be enabled or not at boot.

I avoided encryption before for exactly that reason (requiring a password to boot). If I lose the phone I want the person that found/stole it to be able to at least boot it. if the person is not a thief there's a contact number so they can call me to give it back. if he/she's a thief well, as long as it's on I can call it, track it, wipe it. even brick it.
by not being able to boot it, the chances of getting it back are 0 if the battery dies or is dead!

Sorry for OT, but how can you remotely brick your phone? Just curious in case I ever need to. Don't live in the best of neighborhoods. I can remote wipe, track, take pics. The normal lost/stolen stuff, but I haven't heard of remotely bricking a phone ever.

Only a temp fix---Both my Nexus 7, and Nexus 5 just started asked to be encrypted again....

wipe efs partition (I do have a backup on my computer) and the phone is no longer a phone.
Just to be clear, you can enable encryption on Android 5.0, and it will not force you to lock the phone. (Like the PIN screen and boot lock). When you buy a Nexus 6/9 the data partition is encrypted but there's no lock set. The following is from this article;
First, the encryption doesn't help much if you haven't set a passcode. Ludwig said studies have shown that roughly have of users don't set passcodes on their devices, largely because they find it inconvenient to keep entering them dozens of times a day. Lollipop will still encrypt your data, but it will also automatically decrypt it in normal use. So if you don't have a passcode, much of your information will be available to anyone who picks up your phone.

So if you've enabled encryption, and gone through the process, you're phone data partition is encrypted. It's just not locked down until you use some kind of phone lock too. BTW, the article goes on to describe the limited usefulness of having an encrypted data partition and no phone lock;
Lollipop's encryption still offers some limited protection even under those circumstances—for instance, by protecting stored data against anyone who tries to read it directly from the phone's memory. That could shield user passwords and other sensitive data from attackers.

As to why Exchange policies don't see the phone as encrypted is probably due to another issue.
Setting PIN to be required at startup after encryption possible fix
I now have my Nexus 5 & 7 working with exchange on Lollipop using this-
1. Reflashed Lollipop
2. Let phone reinstall all my apps
3. Locked bootloader.
4. Set a screen lock PIN
5. Encrypt phone
6. Set screen lock PIN to be required on start up (this was missing before!)
7. Installed MDM control via Mass360-all policies look to be met, including encryption
8. Installed my exchange account via Gmail

Solution :
For those of you who find they have this problem and have not solved it, I found a solution that works, related to a bug (feature?) in Accessibility.
Apologies if this was suggested further in the thread, and that I'm replying to an old post. But I recently had this problem and figured out a solution.
- Accessibility was enabled and for some reason this cached the boot password. So- when I removed the app (rights) and turned off accessibility, and changed (reset/reentered) the password in security settings... On next boot the phone correctly asked me for password.

Hi, please try not to bump threads almost a year old. I realise that it might have taken you a while to actually reach this thread, but hear me out.
Opening a new thread is always better, since software versions, features and devices are most likely different, along with different device usage habits/users.
You say you're having "the same problem"... as.. who exactly? There's a bunch of different specific "issues" that relate to encryption. Be specific.
For instance, you mentioning fingerprint sensor leads me to presume that you are not using a Nexus 5.

(Solved) Cannot Sign Into Older, Factory-reset Device: "Unable to sign in due to unknown error..."

[Edit: Just a quick note to let folks know, if there was anyone who cared at all, that this issue has resolved itself. I have no real understanding why, but I did a few more "Factory Resets", both with "Wipe Userdata and Personalizations" and with just "Wipe Userdata". Whatever I did just seemed to work as my wife was able to sign in afterwards. When she did I removed her account from the phone, did the multi-wipe procedure again and was able to sign in as myself. That was the goal.

Hey All,
I have an older device, a Moto X Pure, that I've done the factory reset/wipe all data thing via the stock Recovery. The device is on the latest update that Moto provided 3 (or is it now 4) years ago now, Android 7.1. Other than an unlocked bootloader, everything else is on the device is stock and unrooted, although it does not have a SIM card installed in it at this time. In fact, the entire reason that I'm trying to initialize it is to test a number of different mobile service providers to find the best provider for my, largely rural, common travel pathways.
However, once I enter my wifi info successfully and try to sign into this device with my Google ID/password, I cannot do it. Instead I get an error message that starts with the text that's in quotes in the post subject. The message continues with "try another account, or wait 24 hours and try again." Now, I've done the 24-hour wait thing several times, but the result is the same.
The phone was my wife's daily driver until I replaced it a couple of months ago. I've had her try to sign into it as well, but she can't do it either with the identical result.
So I'm at my wit's end. Has anyone in this sphere ever encountered this error? Were you able to overcome it? Can any other kind soul here suggest a way to circumvent this? I mean one that doesn't involve sledge hammers and concrete pads?

My guess is problems like reported could be related to Factory Reset Protection, which happens when the previous owner of a device didn't properly remove his/her Google account from phone prior to doing a factory reset.

If his wife did a factory reset when she first got it then that's not the case.
OP, did she?
jwoegerbauer, how is the reset password handled? If you originally sign in to the device with one password but then change your Google account password, does the device authorization automatically update too?
Or do you use the original password?
Any failsafe to prevent the device owner from getting permanently locked out?
That whole embedded subsystem gives me a headache.

Ah, yeah, that definitely happened. By that I mean that the previous owner did not properly remove their account prior to my doing the factory reset.
Now the question is: Is there any way for me to recover from this situation? I have the latest factory ROM for this device (from three or four years ago). Can I just flash that over what's on there? Or have I tripped some kind of circuit breaker and I'm just hosed?

No, and we bought it on Swappa about six months after it came out, with an unlocked bootloader no less, so we just assumed that the seller did a reset before transferring it to us, but we don't know that definitively.

Question Fingerprint reader borked

Tmo sent out an update yesterday, which I did, and now the fingerprint reader doesn't work for unlocking, but registers I'm re-registering the same fingerprint. Got this phone last week and there were two updates...
Anyway to roll back without rooting?
Scratch that. I just cleaned the screen. **** works again.
Another good idea is to back up your persist. And save to the cloud. I lost mine on my op8 and had original backed up. Very important for us messing with device. !

But, my fingerprint is on me all the time. I should be able to just hit update and have everything work like before, or reenter my fingerprints after deleting.
