Lately I've run into an issue; can't point my finger on which update this started happening though.
Many videos start to play as H/W+ but then stop and decoder turns to S/W 3 to 6 seconds into the video. What's weird is that it's intermittent, like, I can play that same file again and it'll stick on H/W+. Then I try again and it goes to S/W. Very sporadic.
It's a shame because playing videos on H/W+ consumes 8%/h~ of my battery, whereas S/W a good 15-16%.
Mind posting the media info for the video? And on what device and ROM is this? If you remember, what was the last version of MX that didn't have the issue?

Don't have any more videos right now but lately a pretty big array of files have this decoder switch.
I'm on a Samsung Galaxy tab S 10.5. Stock 4.4.2.
I thiiiiink it started happening in the MX lollipop builds.

are you using multiple multimedia apps at the same time?
mediaplayer has timed out. that's why it has automatically switched S/W.
anyhow I have forwarded the issue to the developer.

Erm, like another video player WHILE mx playing is on it? Not at all.
I mean I do have Shuttle music player on background, but it's not playing anything, and I don't think that's related since only certain videos reproduce this issue.

I am not sure that it's the root cause.
Somehow mediaplayer is getting timed out which is causing the issue.
Anyway, I have forwarded the issue to the developer.

I thought of something, I'll try to explain:
In a folder there are the video files, and also the opening and ending titles as separate files. Like let's say a video is 20 mins, with 2 min opening and 2 min ending titles, for a total of 24 mins.
I only moved the actual video file on my tablet, so it's only playing the 20min file. Could it timeout trying to find the opening / ending files that I omitted?
edit: I'll try the same thing but also copying the other files now.
edit 2: nope, behaving the same way. Could it be mx player doesn't support "separated" video files? I mean, the video says it's 20 min long rather than 24min even if the other files are in there.
I'm not sure if I was clear enough so I'll try to rephrase. I'm playing the videos of an anime that made it so that rather than every episode containing the opening and ending, it calls them as external video file - i guess to save space. that doesnt seem to be supported by mx player.
last edit: yup, it only seems to happen on files that are "split" like I described - but still, not all of them.

Timeout just means HW+ decoder can't play the video file.

DICE Player. Works very well with everything that I throw at it. Developer is also VERY active on the Transformer forums. It's been receiving a lot of updates recently. Only gets better & better. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.dice&feature=search_result -- there is a trial version but its for a certain time period.
But since you insisted free, I'd recommend https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&feature=search_result that as my second choice. Get the codec as well.

One more person here saying: "I use Dice Player on 3.2, and it's the best player I've used on the TF. Hated to pay for it though "
To the OP though, the best free player so far is Moboplayer for me, but I hate the interface, and alot of the codec's playback were buggy. Dice's build of ffdshow is much more stable.

Sorry to hijack the thread but do any of the above mentioned players support HD mkvs ?
My biggest gripe about the otherwise excellent moboplayer is that it doesn't remember your file progress. Have to stop a show halfway? Well, you'll be manually seeking to it later. Rock Player, for all its many other faults, did handle resuming quite well.
I'll have to try MX and DICE. I wouldn't mind paying for a player if its awesome.

DICE Player. I've said it over 20 times in another thread about media players.
DICE has been pushing out updates heavily. I'd highly recommend it.
I highly recommend MX Player. I regularly download my TV shows to watch in bed if I don't feel like firing up the big TV (and to save electricity), and MX has had the best controls out of all of them, although VPlayer comes close, except VPlayer is paid.

If you want to save battery, use diceplayer.
Diceplayer use only 30-50% of CPU power. MX player(or vPlayer) use 70-100% of CPU power.
there is a comparison using Galaxy S.
http://sgalaxy.cz/forum/44/test-video-prehravacu/
diceplayer run at 400Mhz. MX video player run at 800Mhz.

DicePlayer is for me the best HoneyComb video player there is at the moment, simply because it uses the "Lights Out" dim mode.
Having the status bar always visible is so distracting that neither moboplayer nor MX were pleasant to use for me.
Of course, DicePlayer is not without its faults, plus it's not free, but it is being actively developed, and they listen to their customers, as they are constantly trying to improve the software.
I just got a reply from their support, to help diagnose subtitles issues.
I suggest you give the trial a go, it's worth it for the "Lights Out" mode alone.

+1. I'm getting also slow playback with some video files (not only mkv) if HW activated with DICE or MX Player. Software Player is working like a charm on the other hand... I don't know if this is normal behaviour... In fact we don't have "hardware" to help decoding, have we?
@other people in this thread: note that he's asking about hardware decoding... You're all reporting smooth playback, but you don't specify if you use hardware decoding.

Are you sure? I can't... Hardware player throws an error (something about system player can't play that file)... and software player is slow as DICE and MX... ¿¿¿???
Was watching a .mkv file with MX Player and it looked not that great. For what ever reason Mx Player wasn't supporting H/W Accelaration for this particular video. So i tried another player (BS Player) and the H/W Accelaration worked flawless and the video looked nicer =)
I was able to watch the birds video on mobo player without any perceived lag. From what I could tell, it was using HW acceleration by default, but I can't confirm that it was actually doing so.
quick question does your htc one s heat up when you watch those videos like 720p or 1080p?

Not the case I think, as I'm still with (branded) 1.53.(75).3. But definitelly it has something to do with versions, as you've seen.
bye!
Well before I had a older version: 1.53.401.2.
Then we could conclude that from version 1.53.xx.3 (mine), we've got this problem... ¿?
Third number is a rom id (401 is no branded, 75 corresponds to Orange Spain branded), so it doesn't care.
So I recently bought this SD card and I'm happy to finally be able to add new mp3's without deleting the other ones
It works like it should. But I suspect it's too slow for watching movies. Everytime i try to watch a movie off of it the hardware decoder mode in MX shows the video lagging (even 480p). The software decoder in MX plays smooth for a 2-3 minutes until it freezes the whole system so that I can't even lock the screen and remains frozen the next 2 minutes. Then it suddenly starts playing again, out of sync and freezes again in a matter of seconds if I don't pause or skip +/- 1second to get it back in sync. Once I've done one or both of the former "solutions" it plays for 2-3 minutes and locks up the phone again. And it does this on all video players, Gallery video player, VLC, MX and Mobo...
I copied a 720p file to internal storage and that played flawlessly in MX (except that I had to choose SW audio decoder for some reason).

It's a Samsung 32GB, class 10. I have 3 of them and they all perform above spec. As you may know, there are fakes and some that just don't perform as advertised.
I have had very good luck with Samsung cards. They are the only ones that performed to spec. All the SanDisk and others either got corrupted or were very slow and not up to spec.
Just be careful where you buy from, some are fakes with Samsung stickers. Same goes with other brands, fakes with brand name stickers. There are fakes everywhere, even with hard drives I've found. They are a genuine case with a fake generic, junk hard drive inside.

Okay so apparantly it's got nothing to do with the SD card. I watched a 50 min long 480p video from internal storage and that locked up the whole device somewhere at 30min and kept sporadically doing it every 2-5 minutes. My new guess is it could be the developer preview Adreno drivers.. I'll reflash CM with it's own stock drivers and report back.

Will MX Player ever support the playback of video playlists?
For example, I have 20 episode files of a series which don't include the intro and outro, they are a single file which gets called as a chapter when playing an episode - I guess to save file size. VLC supports this, any chance MX will do too?

If I delete the OP or ED (intro and outro), the episodes (1 to 5) won't play the intro and outro.
Tsukimonogatari nyaa.se - This is the "playlist" in question.
What you are describing is ordered chapters. Ordered chapters link separate video files together, such as linking external OP/ED to the main video. Of the currently active main fansub groups, only Coalgirls still uses this... it's quite annoying. This issue has already been brought up here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/mx-player/watching-anime-t2847481
It is also already on the feature requests list, high priority #8.

It's not annoying, it's an excellent feature that more groups should make use of. And not just to cut OP/ED out of episodes to make files smaller, but so that you can quickly skip past/skip to OPs, EDs, previews, prologues, epilogues and "previously-ons" without having to metiouclsy scour the episode. I hope your personal feelings toward this amazing feature is not hindering its progress in MX player.
Priority list in this forum is useless because development shows that low priority list were implented first. Developer has his own priority list in note.

You can do the same with just regular MKV chapters; ordered chapters are not needed for this. Ordered chapters are an extended feature of the basic MKV chapter. If MX Player has support for regular chapters, you'll already be able to seek to chapter markers.

Priority list in this forum is useless because development shows that low priority list were implented first. Developer has his own priority list in note.

The high priority items are in fact being worked on, but as they are more complex items, he's not planning to release anytime soon. The lower priority items, as they are quick fixes, he just tackles in his spare time, and this is why they are released more sporadically and frequently.

Oh, okay. Well, MX Player definitely doesn't have regular chapter support then either.
Indeed, it does not; currently MX Player has zero support for any of the MKV chapter specification.
Mx Player used to play m3u8 files very well, but after the 1.9.x update, it can no longer play this kind of file anymore. Well, I bought Mx Player Pro just because of this function, it is very important to me. So the problem with m3u8 files really bothers me alot.
I have sent reports to [email protected], 2 times, but got no replies. OK, fine. Perhaps Mx Team was just too busy and had no time to reply.
I've been looking forward to the new version since then, hoping this problem would get fixed.
And after 1 month of waiting, today, there is a new update. I immediately hit the update button, thinking the problem is gone by now.
But it still exists!
Well, in sum, please fix it. I'm too tired of it now.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. We are receiving a huge number of emails. Sometimes, It's very difficult to reply to everyone as most of them lack the information.
Are trying to play the m3u8 from your local storage? We have received few similar reports like that & our developers are already looking on it. We will try to fix it ASAP.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, that is the problem I am suffering. MX Player can't play m3u/m3u8 files from local storage.
Hope it will get fixed soon.
m3u8 file problem still exists despite v1.9.7's changelog said it was fixed. I think if you guys can't support m3u8 files well enough, you guys should make an own playlist function for MX Player.
And worse than that, now Mx Player can't play rtmp links. It said "Support for this video codec is missing from your device". It used to play RTMP link perfectly at v1.9.5 or below though.
I'm done. Reverted to v1.9.5 as a temporary solution.

That's wired.
We have fixed some m3u8 related issues.
MX Player only supports HLS compliant m3u8 files. Support for custom m3u8 files are limited.
Can you share the m3u8 file here?
It will be better if you can provide a sample rtmp link as well. If you are bothered about sharing, you can send the sample m3u8 file & rtmp links by a private message.
But they worked before (like these):
http://www.wdr.de/wdrlive/media/hls/1live.m3u8
http://zdf_hds_de-f.akamaihd.net/i/[email protected]/index_3056_av-b.m3u8?sd=10&rebase=on
rtsp://mpv.cdn3.bigCDN.com:554/bigCDN/mp4:bigbuckbunnyiphone_400.mp4
Every line is copied into a separate txt file with m3u8 suffix.

My m3u8 files are like yours.
Just a m3u8 file that contains a link, nothing complicated, such as:
Code:
http://184.72.239.149/vod/smil:BigBuckBunny.smil/playlist.m3u8
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
or
Code:
rtmp://210.245.60.242/nghehevov1/vov1
Here is the links to download
Code:

I'm temporarily using the pirated MX Player v1.8.16, and it plays those m3u8 files perfectly fine.
But starting from v1.9.x, it no longer works.
I have read the logs and seems that starting from v1.9.x, MX Player no longer allows network links in M3U8 files like before. It still accepts and plays local links (such as this) though.
Code:
/storage/722B-130A/DCIM/Camera/VID_20170916_123236.mp4
Also, now Mx Player can no longer play RTMP link. I have sent you guys a bug report through email several days ago. Not sure if you guys have read it or not.
Here is the RTMP link.
Code:
rtmp://210.245.60.242/nghehevov1/vov1
But if I use MxPlayer v1.8.16, it plays perfectly fine. Note that this rtmp link is audio only.

We have pushed a new fixed version 1.9.8 to Google Play Beta testers. Can you guys check whether it fixes your issue or not?

The problem of m3u8 files still remains. But at least, the problem with rtmp links is fixed.
I found this from the log file.
I think MX Player can't play it just because MX.FFmpeg automatically rejects m3u8 files that contain HTTP or RTMP links for some reason, not because it can't play. If I paste the link to Network Stream and play it, MX Player can play it perfectly though . If I remember it right, there was an update of MX.FFmpeg at v1.9.2. There must be something with it.
