I've used Rock Player Lite for watching AVI Files. anyone find anything else that works great, prefferably free, and on unrooted device?

Ive been using moboplayer with no problems....seems to work really well.

DICE Player. Works very well with everything that I throw at it. Developer is also VERY active on the Transformer forums. It's been receiving a lot of updates recently. Only gets better & better. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.dice&feature=search_result -- there is a trial version but its for a certain time period.
But since you insisted free, I'd recommend https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&feature=search_result that as my second choice. Get the codec as well.

One more person here saying: "I use Dice Player on 3.2, and it's the best player I've used on the TF. Hated to pay for it though "
To the OP though, the best free player so far is Moboplayer for me, but I hate the interface, and alot of the codec's playback were buggy. Dice's build of ffdshow is much more stable.

MX player is free and great

Sorry to hijack the thread but do any of the above mentioned players support HD mkvs ?

My biggest gripe about the otherwise excellent moboplayer is that it doesn't remember your file progress. Have to stop a show halfway? Well, you'll be manually seeking to it later. Rock Player, for all its many other faults, did handle resuming quite well.
I'll have to try MX and DICE. I wouldn't mind paying for a player if its awesome.

DICE Player. I've said it over 20 times in another thread about media players.
DICE has been pushing out updates heavily. I'd highly recommend it.

I highly recommend MX Player. I regularly download my TV shows to watch in bed if I don't feel like firing up the big TV (and to save electricity), and MX has had the best controls out of all of them, although VPlayer comes close, except VPlayer is paid.

If you want to save battery, use diceplayer.
Diceplayer use only 30-50% of CPU power. MX player(or vPlayer) use 70-100% of CPU power.
there is a comparison using Galaxy S.
http://sgalaxy.cz/forum/44/test-video-prehravacu/
diceplayer run at 400Mhz. MX video player run at 800Mhz.

If you don't mind me asking, where do you obtain your TV Shows? Can you get them on your Transformer or do you have to get them on normal CPU?

DicePlayer is for me the best HoneyComb video player there is at the moment, simply because it uses the "Lights Out" dim mode.
Having the status bar always visible is so distracting that neither moboplayer nor MX were pleasant to use for me.
Of course, DicePlayer is not without its faults, plus it's not free, but it is being actively developed, and they listen to their customers, as they are constantly trying to improve the software.
I just got a reply from their support, to help diagnose subtitles issues.
I suggest you give the trial a go, it's worth it for the "Lights Out" mode alone.

Check back on the Market for when the Dev updates to 2.3 Compatible.
Few things that comes into my mind:
Two of the best ones I consider is rockplayer and vplayer. Here's a few feedback:
1) In terms of speed/playing file types , at least on my phone they're all about the same, probably because they are all based on ffmpeg. Every 720p plays with the same issue. This is above vplayer because of hardware support and on par with rockplayer.
2) Love the interface. Its pretty well-designed. Love how the RR and FF have an adjustable seek Very useful. Just wish there is gesture support as I'm a bit spoiled .
3) Love the black and white mode. Makes it seem like you are watching one of those old TV back in the days. Really nice effect.
4) Hate the 'R' logo in rockplayer and ads in general, but this one is not very intrusive. Very nice .
Overall one of the top video players out there.
Your player is AMAZING !!!
ANd as you know, Your player does not have one option...
And this would be best for listening to audiobooks....
You know that feeling when someone talk slowly.....with.......not...................so important.............pauses
.................and breaks............................and you want just to
......................listen for information............and this is so annoying .
And as you know it is possible to talk faster....
And as you know this would keep listener focused......
So now.... when you know that this feautere could be important...
You can just why not add option to increase speed of playing without changing pitch of voice ?
Just to have some slider to increase tempo as user want, for example 2 times faster, or 1.5.
Without changing pitch so it would not make voice silly high...
Because that feature can make your player best ever.
has anyone tried it on the x10 mini pro?? is it smooth?? does it have any widget function?? cant wait to try it later on..
Player would fine I guesss, but without a way to remove ads and watermark I do not want it. I would pay for an as free version.
Here in my Motorola Milestone 1 2.1 firmware didnt played MKV, it frozen the video a lot.
Sorry for the english.
Works on HTC Legend with Gingerbread (CM7) smooth!!!
Thank u!!!
yeah this player is really good, install to my Dell Sreak and plays smoothly. But one option missing that is screen orientation.
I think the best player ever for now.
Plays great, but mp4 files, and files converted to mkv format via mediafox play too fast - sound seems ok but it's playing almost 2x speed. Any ideas?
Vplayer
Hi
I am assuming you have created the Vital player or Vplayer. I have bought this app and i have to say its very impressive in terms of play back. But what i would like to see is subtitle support. I cant find anywhere on the app for where i can attach a subtitle that i had previously downloaded.
Another app that does this well is mvideoplayer. This has the option to search on your phone a subtitle and attach it to the video. But the playback is kinda jerky and laggy. Is there any way of getting subtitle support.
Thanks

[Q] anyway to boost volume ?

So I downloaded moboplayer and qq player and both can play movies fine from sd card however with ear buds and volume the sound is very weak (soft). I suspect (though not sure) some of it might be my encoding (it was ripped from a dvd on a linux box - I own the dvd so I can re-encode if that is the issue).
I've played these on my netbook and the sound is ok; a bit weak but not nearly as weak on the transformer.
-
The video plays fine from the ssd card so that aspect is working great. Some of the videos are mp4 others are h.264; the h.264 are a bit louder.
h.264 isn't a container.
The container (I believe) is avi for all of them and the encoding is mepg4 and h.264. However my issue is with the max volume and not the container or encoding (unless that impacts max volume).
ok linux is great; linux tools are great; the tool was using to rip the dvd (acidrp - which is a wrapper around mencode) allows you to set the gain. I had it set to 0 which actually decrease volume; boosting it to 2 did wonders.
There is an app in the market called volume boost. I havent tried it and am not sure if it's compatible with HC but worth a shot maybe?
Another option may be to find a media player that allows you to boost the volume. One of the reasons I like the VLC player on my PC is the ability to easily double the volume (200%) beyond the default levels of the media file.
I know there are a few variations of the VLC player on the Android Market but they don't appear to be official ports and some getting a few bad reviews. Still, if they perform a specific piece of functionality that you need, they may be worth a try. There may be other android apps out there with this same option.
Yea I use mplayer and vlc on linux; neither are available yet for HC. vlc is rumored to be out soon. Anyways I think this did the trick; will encode a couple of dvds tonight and test them tomorrow.

I hit the same issue myself, and so have already been down the same road as the OP. Obviously the best solution is to reencode your videos at a higher volme. However, I also went the other route.
I tried the Volume Boost app, but it did absolutely nothing on the Transformer. However, another app called Volume+ works well. The boost isn't huge, but it's definitely quite noticeable. You can download the app for free from the developer's website if you enable installing apps from outside the market, or you can just buy it in the market. The version I downloaded for free works for volume, but note that most of the graphic equalizer settings do nothing or have an adverse effect with the Transformer.
Hope this info's of help to someone!
Volume+ seems to work fairly well; wonder if it has a negative.

Just guessing, but I doubt it has much impact on speed or battery life -- it's likely just tweaking a setting under the hood. Hence probably the only negative impact is reducing audio quality if you dial it up too far (although for the Transformer, it seems even the maximum setting is conservative enough.)
volume+ kinda works...
i absolutely love moboplayer and hopefully it will implement its own volume boost
yeah using volume+ works on mine too!

+6 ? +7?
+8 sounds really bad lol

When you select a song, Ghosttown uses the YouTube API to search for and play the song. Just about any song by a known artist will work.
Where is the app available?
You can download Ghosttown from the Android Market

Wow, i am impressed. Does exactly what it says! Sometimes finds live versions of the songs though, instead of the album versions.

Loving this app!
Just needs a playback control widget and compatibility with bluetooth controls (unless mine just isn't cooperating).
Just wondering if this is essentially just a youtube player without displaying the video?
Meaning.. does it still stream/download both video and audio from the youtube servers, but just play the audio without displaying video? Or does it just stream/download the audio from youtubes servers without the video (less to download etc)
Great app. Shame that there is no killers live from the royal albert hall. Would also be nice if the audio at the start of some songs (try a dustland farytale of the importance of being idle) could be removed

I'd like to know this also. And if the music comes direct from YouTube's servers or if it has to pass through another or anything, because my plan has unlimited YouTube access and if it's all coming from YouTube I can use as much as I'd like.
I'm kinda wondering about the quality of the audio. How is this compared to say, Spotify?
Nice idea....here's a couple of suggestions...I'm on a slow connection...is there the possibility to be able to check "slow connection" or "buffer entire song"? I'd either like it to buffer MORE or the whole song before playing..nothing more annoying then a song that stops every 10 seconds or so to buffer for another minute then 10 more seconds......along those lines I'd suggest buffering song 2 as soon as song 1 finishes downloading......on a fast connection this won't matter but if I'm buffering whole songs it means the 3 minutes or so the song is playing are grabbing the next song for me.
Also, if you are in fact grabbing the video's and stipping off the audio...maybe you want to allow someone to choose quality level....audiophiles may want the audio from the high quality version (360p etc) where people with slowpoke connections may be fine with the "lowfi" version.
You may want a "ban this song" option as well for those getting "live" versions of songs...create a personal blacklist for that one and pull in a new one.
Thanks!

This app is great! When it works it works brilliant. One annoying gripe though, songs skip randomly and sometimes the app just quits altogether. I'm not sure if it's because of conflicting music apps(I have Tune Wiki and Music 3.0 as well) or what. But the song skipping happens whenever I run another app alongside this one. Like, Whatsapp or MP3 Music Downloader. Just now, it quit when I logged on to the Market. Let me know how I can help.
I have a Nexus S(i9023) currently running Liquid Nexusbread v1.9 with Netarchy 1.3.2 kernel on Android 2.3.4
congratulations, it's a very good app.
i'd like to be able to put the whole album in playlist instead of song by song...

[APP][2.1+/3.0+] VPlayer, 720p/1080p Hardware decoding, new brilliant UI

I have too many blueray videos to watch on my tablet, but no video players can handle them.
I have tried diceplayer, which support hardware decoding in many formats. The performance is great.
All the other video players such as mx video player, moboplayer, don't support real hw decoding like dice player.
They only support the formats which the devices supported already. These 'hw decoding' players are just the devices video player with an different UI.

Dice player is brilliant with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. But its interface is too ugly and it dosen't support the streams as well as VPlayer, which I've used for about 1 year.
Now VPlayer has true hw decoding just like dice player. And I find that it has a new interface.
I can play 720p mkv, flv, avi, m3u8, ts, mov, 3gp with VPlayer new version in my galaxy tab.
And the blueray 1080p also works very well with my Galaxy S2.
thanks, seems great player

Same thing on the arc s (LT18) so presumably would be even worse on the arc (LT15) since it's got a slower processor.

Look of the player is really great, but on my Sensation it isn't as good as dice player - 720p videos have lags, but definitely a good start looking for further updates

I'm not the developer, I found the new version from VPlayer's website http://vplayer.net
So I think the developers are building a new version for testing. The market version hasn't been updated yet.
Doesn't really buffer to well for online video playback. Switched back to MX for that and I'm using this for on phone video files.
Have you ppl tested BSPlayer Lite? It supports HW decoding as well and ui is nice.
Looks good, but videos are lagy on sgs. MX is still the best player.
Everyoneis missing the point. OP is overworking his devices for no reason. 1080p on a phone screen. Why? Don't complain about choppy playback when your trying to view a video (priated to boot) that's overall MBps is way to much for the device.
Either format the video for tthe device or stream it.

I noticed a new version from Android market https://market.android.com/details?id=me.abitno.vplayer.t
It says sgs is supported by hw decoding which can play 720p MKV/FLV/AVI/MOV/M4v

MKV playback

Using a player like MX Player or Dice, is playback smooth for you with mkv files using hardware acceleration? Do you get sound if the audio is ac3?

I am using BS Player (mostly) and 720p mkv playback is actually (and surprisingly) even better than on my Asus Transformer.

Don´t know about that.
I'm able to play 1080p anime that has ac3 audio, .ass subtitles, in an mkv container and the video track is in h264. I'm able to play it with MK Player. This device handles it like a champ. No lag here!

Please can you try http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests/ video 'birds'. Please download it first ( not streaming) and then play it with a hardware accelerated video player
thanks

It goes smooth with RockPlayer.
+1. I'm getting also slow playback with some video files (not only mkv) if HW activated with DICE or MX Player. Software Player is working like a charm on the other hand... I don't know if this is normal behaviour... In fact we don't have "hardware" to help decoding, have we?
@other people in this thread: note that he's asking about hardware decoding... You're all reporting smooth playback, but you don't specify if you use hardware decoding.
bye!

BTW, I can't play that "birds" file smoothly with my HTC One S. Tried Dice and MX Players, Software and Hardware.
I don't think our phone can handle 40 Mbps MKV smooth... No way.
bye!

Are you sure? I can't... Hardware player throws an error (something about system player can't play that file)... and software player is slow as DICE and MX... ¿¿¿???
Was watching a .mkv file with MX Player and it looked not that great. For what ever reason Mx Player wasn't supporting H/W Accelaration for this particular video. So i tried another player (BS Player) and the H/W Accelaration worked flawless and the video looked nicer =)
I was able to watch the birds video on mobo player without any perceived lag. From what I could tell, it was using HW acceleration by default, but I can't confirm that it was actually doing so.
quick question does your htc one s heat up when you watch those videos like 720p or 1080p?

Yup. Try with RockPlayer…
And, as asked, I tested by hardware… software just can't handle that.
I don't understand then... There's no config involved here, so I just can't understand why we can't play that file and you don't see an problem... ¿?
This is a screenshot of what I get if I try to play birds file within RockPlayer, in hardware mode:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

}
As I said, there's nothing to configure, so I don't understand...
Do you use stock ROM, or a cooked one?
Stock…
Try download again, maybe the file is corrupted.
If it's playable in software mode I don't think it's corrupted... But I'll try anyway.

I had a copy of The Boondock Saints that had AC3 audio and the audio wouldn't play.
That doesn't answer the HW question but it might have just been the copy I "borrowed".
Sent from my rooted and debloated T Mobile HTC One S
I might found out what's wrong: I just did the update (to 1.78.401.2) and now I get the same error "this file can not be played with System Player".

Not the case I think, as I'm still with (branded) 1.53.(75).3. But definitelly it has something to do with versions, as you've seen.
bye!
Well before I had a older version: 1.53.401.2.
Then we could conclude that from version 1.53.xx.3 (mine), we've got this problem... ¿?
Third number is a rom id (401 is no branded, 75 corresponds to Orange Spain branded), so it doesn't care.
