Sandisk Class 4 32GB Slow? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I recently bought this SD card and I'm happy to finally be able to add new mp3's without deleting the other ones
It works like it should. But I suspect it's too slow for watching movies. Everytime i try to watch a movie off of it the hardware decoder mode in MX shows the video lagging (even 480p). The software decoder in MX plays smooth for a 2-3 minutes until it freezes the whole system so that I can't even lock the screen and remains frozen the next 2 minutes. Then it suddenly starts playing again, out of sync and freezes again in a matter of seconds if I don't pause or skip +/- 1second to get it back in sync. Once I've done one or both of the former "solutions" it plays for 2-3 minutes and locks up the phone again. And it does this on all video players, Gallery video player, VLC, MX and Mobo...
I copied a 720p file to internal storage and that played flawlessly in MX (except that I had to choose SW audio decoder for some reason).

Yeah that's not an option atm. But according to Sandisk Class 4 is 4 megabytes/s. So this is more than enough for full hd video and I get these issues with 480p! I don't what to do, I'll try formatting it since I didn't do that to begin with.

that's theoretical speed not real life speed just like harddrives, I don't think I ever got the posted harddrive data transfers especially between two of the same hd's, too many variables to consider

Test the transfer speed of the card. Some are not what they say. My class 10 is better than advertised speed.

It's a Samsung 32GB, class 10. I have 3 of them and they all perform above spec. As you may know, there are fakes and some that just don't perform as advertised.
I have had very good luck with Samsung cards. They are the only ones that performed to spec. All the SanDisk and others either got corrupted or were very slow and not up to spec.
Just be careful where you buy from, some are fakes with Samsung stickers. Same goes with other brands, fakes with brand name stickers. There are fakes everywhere, even with hard drives I've found. They are a genuine case with a fake generic, junk hard drive inside.

Okay so apparantly it's got nothing to do with the SD card. I watched a 50 min long 480p video from internal storage and that locked up the whole device somewhere at 30min and kept sporadically doing it every 2-5 minutes. My new guess is it could be the developer preview Adreno drivers.. I'll reflash CM with it's own stock drivers and report back.

Alright, I've tested with stock CM drivers. Same thing. I've tested the SD card which performs above the promised 4MB/s.

It's an anime, "The Garden of Words", in 720p with soft subs. But it doesn't matter it's the same with all the videos... This only started to happen with with CM10.1.3 rc2... This stuff is bugging me out >.<

Multi channel recording studio...

Hey... I found a really cool recording studio app called Meteor
I installed the demo cab and it works like a charm (you just can't save your work on the demo version).
I'm amazed what our little phones are capable of doing. By the way... this is the first application I've seen where pinch to zoom is a real necessity. In fact... I always have it maximum zoomed and this way it's almost like a virtual desktop. (difficult to explain but I hope you know what I mean)

Not quite... Meteor is a multi-track recording studio that lets you record audio (guitar & voice for example) and process it in many ways. I'm amazed that it really works! But as I said... you need to enable pinch to zoom because the buttons are incredibly tiny!

Excellent! This will come in well handy!
Anyone know of a HD2 compatible version or something similar of this (see attached) ?
Would be really handy for doing rough mixes of my acoustic stuff!
Some nice apps on there. I just bought Chord Explorer, installed it ok but it will not start :-(. Tried re-installing on the phone memory, but still no good.
Anyone else had any problems?

I guess it would have to connect through the micro USB somehow, there's plenty of USB 2.0 mics around but I doubt they'd be compatible via a micro USB/USB 2.0 adapter?
To be fair though the sound quality of the phone mic isn't that bad for low level stuff, I'm amazed at what this phone can do!!
Thanks again for the heads up about MeTeor, excellent find!
Damn, love that Meteor-program!!! Allright, took some definite tweaking before it worked well enough to be functional on the hd2.
But now i've got a working 12 track harddisk recording system in cd-quality in my pocket....for only 30 bucks??!!!
I LOVE my HD2!!!!!
Thanx a million Tubgirl
I think the USB-Mic won't work...problem starts with drivers and ends up with 5V power-supply....
Well, the power-supply could be solved with internal batteries in the mic itself, or just using a dynamic microphone (needs no power to operate)....but drivers are probably the biggest issue...don't even know if one can even write driver software to WinMo, just like it's done to Vista etc.... ??

Well shure, I am afraid its a bit complicated. I'll try and see if I can describe it in a way that makes sense .
The first problem one might experience, at least i did on mine (using official htc 1.66 rom), is crackles, pops and dropouts in your recordings. This can be corrected with some adjustments to audiobuffersettings and the cachesize set by Meteor for your sd-card.
1. You need to find the "PREFS.xml"-file, in the Meteor directory. For me it would be here: My Phone\Memorycard\programs\Meteor\
2. You will need a browser that can open and edit XML-files, I used Adobe Dreamweaver.
3. Open the PREFS.xml and adjust the following:
AudioBufferSize="2048" -> AudioBufferSize="4096"
AudioBufferCount="32" -> AudioBufferCount="64"
ReadCacheSize="32768" -> ReadCacheSize="131072"
WriteCacheSize="65536" -> WriteCacheSize="262144"
These are maximum settings, and all in coherrence with what the manual suggests for troubleshooting by the way: View attachment Meteor_manual.zip
THE SECOND PROBLEM with the HD 2 as a multitrack harddisc recorder, as with any DAW-system, is mainly the question of latency.
(for info on DAW, check this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation)
Latency refers to how long the system (meaning processor, RAM, disc etc) is to actually process the sound converted (ADC), recorded, replayed & deconverted (DAC) again.
For the DAW to work properly (avoiding sync-issues between different recordings), it most know its own latency - hence the calibrating/strange beeps when running Meteor the first time.
Only thing is, that even though HD 2 is fast, it appears to have either a slow soundcard/ADC-DAC-converter or pourly written driversoftware to support it. Either way, at least on my phone, Meteor simply cannot deliver ENOUGH LATENCY, to compensate sync-issues, especially not with the above buffer and cachesettings set to maximum, not even with "Synchronize Audio Threads" under <setup> ticked (Which should be done by the way!).
There is a workaround though, but it requires you to know with what BPM (120 bpm being default) you are running during your current recording session and what latency will fit the current bpm you are running with.
The point is that you SIMPLY ADJUST the recording BACK according to your starting point of recording.
EXAMPLE:
You plan to record on track one at 120 bpm, so you set the cursor at the 1-figure at the ruler in the upperbar. you then set your latency under "setup\audio setup" to "940 ms".
Press record. When finished recording you highlight the recording and simply drag it 1-line back (NOT 1-bar, but 1/4 of a bar).
Repeat this for next recording on track 2 or any other, still keeping the 1-ruler as starting point, and you should have two recordings in perfect sync!
This should of course be repeated for every new recording...always dragging it 1-line back to keep sync.
You can test this yourself by the way, by turning on the metronome letting it play thru the HD 2's speakers, simultanously recording it. Drag the recording back, and when playedback, still with the metronome on, you should hear the recording and the metronome playing synchronized. If it is NOT in sync, you need to adjust latency, untill it is, testing with the metronome as above.
120 bpm = 940 ms latency works on my system, but I have no idea if it will work as a standard on all hd 2 phones. Problem is also, that when changing the bpm, you will also have to adjust latency. But assuming that there is some consistency thru this on most HD 2 (though rom and tweaks probably have a huge influence on this), i have here made a list of these values with what bpm = latency: View attachment Latency.zip
Quite complex instructions, hope this will help though. Welcome to ask for clarification, and I'll see if can answer accordingly
Have fun!

Make your GALLERIES & MUSIC load FASTER!

NEW PROGRAM MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR DEFRAGGING FLASH MEMORY:
Yep, I know, they say defragging flash memory is unnecessary and wears out your SDCard. But then again, a car that can go 160 mph is unnecessary too, but that doesn't mean you don't want it.
My favorite (and free) defragmentation program is called:
MyDefrag << Click to D/L.
You can get it online and it goes on your PC (not your phone):
It has a NEW option that is made specifically for defragging flash memory (i.e., your SDCard). I figured, what the hell and gave it a run.
NOTE: THIS PROCESS CAN GET HUNG UP ON YOU (IF IT DOES, DO THIS)
It took 3 tries to get mine to go all the way through the first time. Just exit out of MyDefrag and when restarting chose the "Kill Current Session" option and it will pick up where it got stuck before.
This probably works faster if you pull your card and put it into a usb card reader. Of course, back up your SDCard on your PC before trying this.
THE RESULTS:
1) Even large galleries populate VERY fast.
2) Music and video libraries load instantly.
3) When adding apps/widgets to homescreens, options appear MUCH faster.
3) NO improvement in read/write speeds (but I didn't expect that anyway because the read/write test is just reading and writing 200 mb of data to empty space anyway).
CONCLUSION:
This takes a while so only do it when you have a spare 1/2 hour or more that you don't need a phone. As far as wearing out your SDCard, c'mon, we are flash-a-holics and are beating our cards to death daily anyway. However, I would recommend doing this only monthly or so.
* P.S. - This is also an excellent defragmentation tool for your PC.
** UPDATE: We have been testing this out over at the MikFroyo thread and members have been getting excellent results.
IF THIS THREAD HELPED MAKE YOUR PHONE FASTER, GIVE IT A 5-STAR RATING ON TOP SO OTHERS WILL SEE IT TOO
Hell, I'll try anything once. Thanks for this.
trying now..i followed it on MikeFroyo post.... .. like he said above . i'll try anything once..... i'm at 94% now on a 16gb class 10...
doesnt seem to be taking as long as some others have......30 mins to an hour ..
edit:.... spoke to soon.. back down to 1% fastfill..hahah
Sometimes it can get kind of hung up. If it does, just close it and start it again. When prompted kill the prior session and it will pick up where it left off. Don't know why it hangs like that but didn't seem to cause problems.
If you have a new card, it is likely not very fragmented yet and will defrag faster.

Just did this on my Wintech 16gb that is about 85% full. Worked like a charm. My gallery loads almost instantly now, before it took about 20-30 sec. The whole process took about an hour and a half(I plugged my card into my reader in my laptop). Thanks for the heads up on this.

If it has an option for defragging flash memory then I suppose so. MyDefrag is free.
Gave this a shot yesterday had to use a card reader and try a couple of times for the software to complete all of the way. My sd card is now Defragmented...did I notice a speed increase...not really but I don't pay much attention to loading times. Makes me feel better and faster and thats good enough for me!

Tried it, took less than 1/2 and noticed a bit of improvement. Sweet.

I was thinking the same thing. In the OP it is explained that this program is designed for flash memory to reduce the number of read/write. Flash memory can only handle so many write cycles so I decided to let this program do it's thing to minimize the amount of moving/writing to my SD card. I am sure that one defrag with any program wouldn't hurt anything but I fell better know that the program tries to minimize the amount it affects a memory cards life cycle.
Just as a side note....I don't know if in the long run it matters a whole lot at all....I can't remember how many times flash memory can be written to but I am sure that I will have a new phone and SD card way before I am in any danger or reaching the upper limits.

Actually, this is incorrect. This program is designed to specifically defrag flash drives. You do not want to defrag them in the same way you defrag typical hard drives.
In the future, please read the OP before commenting. This fact is clearly stated.
Thanks for this! Another great idea from mitchellvii!
backing up Sdcard now will test this

thank you, zokipirlo. this is a great contribution to the android market.
Sounds like Plex, although it does allow you to download.
It doesn't work too good, I got a lot of garbage frames, big boxes of colors and stuff. My PC is fast enough so I don't think it's a problem with the encoding speed.
Also I found a bug, You cant add an entire hard drive letter, on the server it shows like C:/\ and on the app itself it shows C:\\ and when you enter it shows nothing.
I hope this app get better because I miss Air video from my iphone.
Also, could you make MKV embedded subs appear like they appear on the PC? I mean, encoding the subs with the video on the PC (for anime fansub and stuff)
EDIT: this is on a vibrant 2.2
Holy hd batman!!
Works perfectly on my Samsung Galaxy S2, This is great because plex didn't!!

If that's not a problem then it's probably quality related. Can you please tell me which quality profile or bitrate in case of custom profile are you using?
I tried all 3 profiles.
First the default one, appear to be good for 10 seconds but then randomly some frame goes bad and the next 30 frames looks awful too, then it corrects itself for another 10-15 seconds and the same happens.
The dual core preset appear to be the same.
And the low quality preset its a gamble, because sometimes looks better, but still got some bad frames, but sometimes it looks worse than the other 2 presets, almost 95% of bad frames.
Could it be a codec problems? I use CCCP for my video playback needs...

Artifacts on video playback

Guys,
I have this weird issue where I get artifacts during video playback, be it mp4 videos that I copy to my Nexus, videos recorded with the cell's camera, and even YouTube videos! Here's a sample:

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Yes, Mark, 100% stock Google; no custom ROMs, no root, no unlocked bootloader, etc.
I switched back to Dalvik and it seems like the issue went away, but I got it back after a few hours. So no matter what runtime is enabled, the artifacts show.
I installed MX Player last night, and it works perfectly with software decoder only; but if I enable the hardware decoder, I get the same artifacts. Using this doesn't solve the problem on YouTube, of course.
I guess I'll have to do a factory data reset and see if that solves my problem. Darn.
Well, I factory reset my phone twice, and even formatted cache, all to no avail. I'm still having this freaking issue.
Anybody has experienced this problem? Any possible solution?

It looks like graphics over heating to me, maybe too heavy a case, ambient temperatures or something along then lines perhaps?

Plugged, unplugged, it's the same.
Curiously, I disabled HDR+ on the camera app and YouTube isn't showing the problem anymore. But it's too early for me to say that's causing the problem.
However, IMDb is showing lots of artifacts on the trailers (embedded youtube, I think); I just played The Hobbit 's trailer and it's full of them. But the same trailer is perfect on YouTube. Same issue on Tapatalk with YouTube videos.
Biggest problem is this issue also occurs when playing local videos, being an mp4 I copied to the phone or a video recorded with the camera.
It's gotta software, though, cause MX Player does not have this issue when playing any local files. But it really bugs me.

A screenshot captures everything on the screen independently of the source of the problem, be it software or hardware.
Biggest problem is this issue is not occurring on YouTube anymore. And a hardware issue will occur not only on videos, but on games too (which are perfect), and pretty much everywhere.
I'm on 4.4.2 now. Is it possible to go back to 4.4.0? I'm having the feeling that the ROM installed on this phone came with the problem, and subsequent updates did not overwrite the troublesome files.

In my case, it seems to be the video player system app, which does not show in the list of apps; if it did, I would already have cleared its cache at least.
I'm really bugged by this issue, man; my phone is almost "perfect". I'm downloading the 4.4 image; I'll downgrade back to original stock to see if that finally fixes this issue, and then just let the 4.4.2 OTA get installed by itself.
None of this worked.
Could someone share the video player system app, please?

[Bug Report] H/W+ auto-switching to S/W

Lately I've run into an issue; can't point my finger on which update this started happening though.
Many videos start to play as H/W+ but then stop and decoder turns to S/W 3 to 6 seconds into the video. What's weird is that it's intermittent, like, I can play that same file again and it'll stick on H/W+. Then I try again and it goes to S/W. Very sporadic.
It's a shame because playing videos on H/W+ consumes 8%/h~ of my battery, whereas S/W a good 15-16%.
Mind posting the media info for the video? And on what device and ROM is this? If you remember, what was the last version of MX that didn't have the issue?

Don't have any more videos right now but lately a pretty big array of files have this decoder switch.
I'm on a Samsung Galaxy tab S 10.5. Stock 4.4.2.
I thiiiiink it started happening in the MX lollipop builds.

Can you collect the logs immediately after reproducing the issue?

Thank you.
Here is the log for that specific video, taken a couple seconds after it switched to S/W decoder.

are you using multiple multimedia apps at the same time?
mediaplayer has timed out. that's why it has automatically switched S/W.
anyhow I have forwarded the issue to the developer.

Erm, like another video player WHILE mx playing is on it? Not at all.
I mean I do have Shuttle music player on background, but it's not playing anything, and I don't think that's related since only certain videos reproduce this issue.

I am not sure that it's the root cause.
Somehow mediaplayer is getting timed out which is causing the issue.
Anyway, I have forwarded the issue to the developer.

I thought of something, I'll try to explain:
In a folder there are the video files, and also the opening and ending titles as separate files. Like let's say a video is 20 mins, with 2 min opening and 2 min ending titles, for a total of 24 mins.
I only moved the actual video file on my tablet, so it's only playing the 20min file. Could it timeout trying to find the opening / ending files that I omitted?
edit: I'll try the same thing but also copying the other files now.
edit 2: nope, behaving the same way. Could it be mx player doesn't support "separated" video files? I mean, the video says it's 20 min long rather than 24min even if the other files are in there.
I'm not sure if I was clear enough so I'll try to rephrase. I'm playing the videos of an anime that made it so that rather than every episode containing the opening and ending, it calls them as external video file - i guess to save space. that doesnt seem to be supported by mx player.
last edit: yup, it only seems to happen on files that are "split" like I described - but still, not all of them.

Timeout just means HW+ decoder can't play the video file.
Would you send me this video file or its download link?

Also it's worth noting that it doesn't happen on my Nexus 5 running 5.0.1. Only on my 4.4.2 Galaxy Tab S.
