NEW PROGRAM MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR DEFRAGGING FLASH MEMORY:
Yep, I know, they say defragging flash memory is unnecessary and wears out your SDCard. But then again, a car that can go 160 mph is unnecessary too, but that doesn't mean you don't want it.
My favorite (and free) defragmentation program is called:
MyDefrag << Click to D/L.
You can get it online and it goes on your PC (not your phone):
It has a NEW option that is made specifically for defragging flash memory (i.e., your SDCard). I figured, what the hell and gave it a run.
NOTE: THIS PROCESS CAN GET HUNG UP ON YOU (IF IT DOES, DO THIS)
It took 3 tries to get mine to go all the way through the first time. Just exit out of MyDefrag and when restarting chose the "Kill Current Session" option and it will pick up where it got stuck before.
This probably works faster if you pull your card and put it into a usb card reader. Of course, back up your SDCard on your PC before trying this.
THE RESULTS:
1) Even large galleries populate VERY fast.
2) Music and video libraries load instantly.
3) When adding apps/widgets to homescreens, options appear MUCH faster.
3) NO improvement in read/write speeds (but I didn't expect that anyway because the read/write test is just reading and writing 200 mb of data to empty space anyway).
CONCLUSION:
This takes a while so only do it when you have a spare 1/2 hour or more that you don't need a phone. As far as wearing out your SDCard, c'mon, we are flash-a-holics and are beating our cards to death daily anyway. However, I would recommend doing this only monthly or so.
* P.S. - This is also an excellent defragmentation tool for your PC.
** UPDATE: We have been testing this out over at the MikFroyo thread and members have been getting excellent results.
IF THIS THREAD HELPED MAKE YOUR PHONE FASTER, GIVE IT A 5-STAR RATING ON TOP SO OTHERS WILL SEE IT TOO
Hell, I'll try anything once. Thanks for this.
trying now..i followed it on MikeFroyo post.... .. like he said above . i'll try anything once..... i'm at 94% now on a 16gb class 10...
doesnt seem to be taking as long as some others have......30 mins to an hour ..
edit:.... spoke to soon.. back down to 1% fastfill..hahah
Sometimes it can get kind of hung up. If it does, just close it and start it again. When prompted kill the prior session and it will pick up where it left off. Don't know why it hangs like that but didn't seem to cause problems.
If you have a new card, it is likely not very fragmented yet and will defrag faster.

Just did this on my Wintech 16gb that is about 85% full. Worked like a charm. My gallery loads almost instantly now, before it took about 20-30 sec. The whole process took about an hour and a half(I plugged my card into my reader in my laptop). Thanks for the heads up on this.

NP, glad it worked. The whole "SDCards don't need to be defragged" thing is a myth.
Sweet! I'm running it now.
thanks!

If it has an option for defragging flash memory then I suppose so. MyDefrag is free.
Gave this a shot yesterday had to use a card reader and try a couple of times for the software to complete all of the way. My sd card is now Defragmented...did I notice a speed increase...not really but I don't pay much attention to loading times. Makes me feel better and faster and thats good enough for me!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
crap... no mac version
Tried it, took less than 1/2 and noticed a bit of improvement. Sweet.
Not bad...but I just want to say you can defrag without using that program. Connect your phone as a disk drive, then right click it in my computer, properties, the tools, and you can click defrag to analyze and defrag it, and all your other drives.

I was thinking the same thing. In the OP it is explained that this program is designed for flash memory to reduce the number of read/write. Flash memory can only handle so many write cycles so I decided to let this program do it's thing to minimize the amount of moving/writing to my SD card. I am sure that one defrag with any program wouldn't hurt anything but I fell better know that the program tries to minimize the amount it affects a memory cards life cycle.
Just as a side note....I don't know if in the long run it matters a whole lot at all....I can't remember how many times flash memory can be written to but I am sure that I will have a new phone and SD card way before I am in any danger or reaching the upper limits.

Actually, this is incorrect. This program is designed to specifically defrag flash drives. You do not want to defrag them in the same way you defrag typical hard drives.
In the future, please read the OP before commenting. This fact is clearly stated.
Thanks for this! Another great idea from mitchellvii!
backing up Sdcard now will test this
just started defragging my 32gb class 4 lets see what it does.
Q: I kno the OP says around 30 min but was size sd was that? I have around 18gb of music and pictures and videos on my card (love me my music anndd my gf lol) just curious if ill get my phone back before todays kickoff

howdy peeps i have an idea of how maybe we could solve the speed issues with the hero rom but my programming skills have not reached java as of yet, i am learning as we speak, but heres my idea...
im thinking of a program that sits in the background that basically controls the priority of certain programs running on android like rosie.apk.
for instance if the home button is pressed not only is the rosie apk brought to the front but is given more cpu priority over other applications running which in affect should speed up delays. a bit like when you do it in task manager on windows.
i am trying to figure out how to write this with java and the android sdk but wondered what your views are on this and if anyone can actually implement this quicker and better than i will be able to lol
look forward to hearing your views
I think the problem with this is that processes in Android drop in and out of memory. So, for example, Rosie will be dropped out of memory to make way for the browser and a heavy web page. Applications that are dropped have their state saved, so when you go back to them you are taken back to the position you were in. However, big processes like Rosie take a noticeable time to get back to where they were.
I think the key to speeding up Hero is increasing "memory" so that processes don't need to get dropped. Hence why I've been looking for that elusive perfect Compcache build. If we can make 100Mb of usable memory work more like 200Mb or more, then that might do the business.
ahh i see, but would not doing this speed up the pick up time of the for instance rosie apk?i can see where you are coming from because if we had more memory we would not need to drop the rosie out of memory, im thinking tho if you had both more memory and a process manager it could be some speedy stuff...hmm
Changing process priority probably wouldn't help, because (using Rosie reloads as an example) there isn't a process to prioritise - Rosie isn't actually there any more to give increased priority to. Maybe you could give priority to the process that does the reload but the subjective speed increase would be I think negligible, because loading from sd or memory is going to depend on the speed of the memory, not how much processor grunt the reload process gets.
A nice idea but I think the way Android works would make it problematic.
cool cheers for the insight into android glad someone knows there stuff lets hope someone comes up with a working solution
hmmm. also i think that android itself is doing it's job not sooo bad. i can't imagine that loading back the rosie process is not getting enough cpu time, that would be a huge design failure ...
correct me if i'm wrong, but i really hope, that android is intelligent enough to do this on it's own.
Has there been any optimization of hero or just a straight port?

Android is very good at managing resources and applications...
Having developed some Android applications, I can't really think of a good way to improve on the current system. Perhaps all I could suggest is running a Manual Process Manager... and closing applications/Services which you no longer are using but are still running.
A quick tip would be, when you are running an application and no longer need it... use the back button, not the Home button.
If you use the Back button, the application will Destroy... the Home button will 'Pause' the application and assume that you will want to come back to it later.
Android maintains a chain of open Activities, you can keep opening new Activities and it will maintain the old one you were running in a 'Paused' State. If you keep moving forward and opening new applications, but never go backward... you will end up with a lot of things running... so each time you open something, it may need to free up some memory by closing an application that has not been used for a long time which is still in a paused state.
You could speed things up in that scenario by running a task manager and killing processors... or I usually just reboot my phone...
Here is a diagram which shows the Life cycle of applications. Services have a slightly different Life cycle.

Hello,
Before tweaking Android to try to run Rosie properly, perhaps we can try to optimize Rosie ?
For example, in the first roms we found here, Rosie.apk was about 4Mo. Now in the Qtek 1.2 swap, it is only about 690Ko. Here, we can find a 330ko version.
But perhaps some people can do the same job to optimize all the UI of Rosie, i think about all the widgets ,the browser, the keyboard ...
The more lighter UI Rosie is, the less memory Rosie need ?
Scargoll.
I did that but it's not finish yet. i just use a png optimizer so i can make every apk a bit smaller but my problem is that i don't really know how to sign an .apk file
when i know how to do that will have an fully working hero rom with compcache about 60 mb ...

Good news !!!
I don't know how to sign apk files, but i found this, perhaps this can help ?
http://www.anddev.org/signing_your_apk-application_for_release_keytooljarsigner-t3069.html
Scargoll.
I follow this tutorial more than 3 times now. when i want to install the signed apk to my phone there ist always an error -- > can't install ...
You're trying to install an app that's already running. You need to flash it with an update.zip+script or copy it with ADB when your device is in fastboot.
Ill see if I can optimize rosie's images, I brought down the HTC_IME size down by 25% just by optimizing the png images.
Sizes of the IMAGES in rosie.apk, not total size.
141 KB smaller than the original. Good result if I say so myself!
bump.
No one wants to continue? I'll optimize any image I can find and reduce the size of all images by 20% as well ending up with a probably faster running phone
Can you post directions on how to optimize???
A lot of people have already done some work trying to optimise Rosie. Speaking personally, the ne thing I always do when I install a new Hero build is to push the Rosie from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532822
onto the phone. It's the stablest I've found that manages to do everything in a small-ish footprint without making it crash prone and buggy. There's a 300-odd K one in the same thread that I've never been able to get to work. There's also a 300-odd K one that came with Drizzy's 1.2 Hero release which was buggy - his next release took the file size back up to 3.5Mb!
tl;dr: there are already optimised Rosies, but not all of them work particularly well.

My main phone is an HTC device running Android on sd card.. developers were able to get the fps to run up to 24, which is about 6-7 lower then a stock Magic.. not bad.. for a 2 year old phone!
Perhaps when other things are going smoothly someone with that type of knowledge will be able to play with driver software or something.
I think right now, Magic users get about 27-29 fps.
How many max no. of apps[at any point of time] have you installed on your device ?
I had heard someone saying 200 apps... so was curious to know about this
Off-topic- Which program do u use to back up these apps so that you dont have to install them again after flashing a new rom
a poll would have been fun
I have way over 365+ Apps installed, that i simply did a 1 button restore using Titanium Backup from my SGS (User Apps+User Data)
it was totally painless
then in Market, i hit "Update All" and Bam! all Apps were updated to the latest version.
so far I've not come across any OLD 2.1/2.2 software that does not work properly in 2.3
well technically speaking they are NOT old anymore, since they were all UPDATED to the latest version from Market
that's probably what prevented all the errors

Wow, and I thought I was a "shameless app whore" with all the apps I have (130 or so)!
How much memory have those 365 apps used up? Curious because of other discussions over the need (or lack of, in my opinion) to use apps2sd or not on the Nexus S.
that's why i always complaing about the missing microSD
currently sitting at around 800 MB on apps usage, some games are huge (Gamerloft / EA), and Copilot GPS software takes up another 3 GB, it doesn't leave me much for MP3 and Animes/Movies on the go
^^
You're not the only one who thought they had a ton of apps installed....at one point in time I think I had 150+ installed but I've since done some pruning and am down to 128 now (according to appbrain).
I'm afraid that with all the space available on the Nexus S I'm going to resort back to my app hoarding days.
yup, i love appbrain, makes Cataloguing my apps such a breeze
also finding new or better apps to what i currently have already

Yeah, I miss the sdcard, but am getting by without it. I can easily fill up 28 gigs with just music, videos, and titanium or nandroid backups.
Doesn't your CoPilot map data go on the sdcard? Mine does. That doesn't count as part of the internal space for apps that we get (~ 1gb) or the need/lack-of-need to use apps2sd. I'm sure you know that, but some of the noobs might be confused by that. The actual app is only about 15mb in the apps space.

You guys might think, 'oh he's using VNC, or some other software, screen mirroring, blah blah blah FAKE' ...
This is not fake. Windows 7 is running on my Blaze 4G. I can assure you, a friend of mine recompiled the Windows 7 kernel in Ubuntu and sent me a zip file and an APK to reboot my phone into Windows 7. A lot of the Windows 7 components are missing, and some things don't work at all (like Google Chrome) and games, probably because there are no Adreno Windows drivers. Video playback doesn't work, Aero doesn't work, System Properties CTDs, and a plethora of other things don't work. I managed to get audio working with some fooling around, images read fine, and a few apps like Explorer and Paint work. WiFi works, Bluetooth doesn't, battery doesn't, soft keys don't do anything, power button doesn't work, volume buttons work but don't do anything (register on key functioning diagram) on-screen keyboard crashes, SD card works but is super buggy, and it gets hot REALLY FAST. the 1GiB of RAM gets cut down to about 512MB, and HDD space is the 1.4 GiB of app storage, most of which is taken up by shared (?) video memory for the Adreno.
Oh, and I forgot to mention...it is really slow. It took 27 minutes to boot. Other than many more bugs, it works. I am not uploading the apk or the zip because Microsoft would sue me for pirating or something, not to mention recompiling the Windows 7 kernel has some legality issues.

Oh yeah, you might notice all of the game icons on the taskbar, those are just empty shortcuts.
The fact that it takes a lot of memory to install Windows 7 completely concludes that this is fake and the use of VNC is possible. You do realize that 1.4 GB of space is not even enough for Ubuntu! This was a useless post. Hence even seeing all the installed programs on the taskbar. If they indeed shortcuts, they will need a program to lead to. In reality, you would need more space for Windows 7 to even boot up. 512mb of RAM? Good luck even getting the file explorer up. Indeed was a useless post. Probably one for attention.

Technically the min RAM for 32-bit is 1GB but you're right that this is fake
Kernel for windows is closed-source, you can't recompile it for ARM
Linux Kernel won't work on Windows so don't try to say you used that
1.5GB of space hasn't been sufficient to install Windows since like the ME days or even earlier
and there's probably a whole bunch of other logic wrong I'm not going to waste my time explaining to you

On my new, U11, w/BL still locked, & still unrooted, I connected an OnTheGo (OTG) cable & a thumdrive.
My file mgr of choice, Solid Explorer, *did* 'see' the dir structure & pix I had in my "Fotos" subdir off the root of thumbdrive; but “Google Photos" did NOT see it as a 'Mounted' drive. Why isn't the drive mounted? is it a OS thing, or an HTC thing, or a hardware/driver thing?
This further complicates the lack of the old Gallery app's folder/album based presentation style (fotogs mostly use 'Event' or 'Location' based organization in Lightroom… & BTW, any substitute Gallery-like apps out there? w/preferably on-microSD-Based storage, or on-device storage that uses folder/album based presentation style? Sugestions will be much appreciated). TIA oldwolf
Hey, I love QuickPic, use it since 2013. Minimalistic yet powerful.
My pendrive doesn't get mounted to the filesystem either as far as I can find (I'm unrooted as well). However, I can open pictures from Total Commander from the pendrive, although only one at the time - see attached screens for path in QuickPic. Google Photos opens it even from the "Downloads" native file explorer, one at the time as well, but I don't like the app.

Our Sprint version only has one SIM card and micro-sdcard tray. The dual SIM card version has two options 2 SIM Cards or one SIM card and micro-sdcard. It is not that confusing. We pretty much all know there are different updates and software version, easiest to specify you device info when starting a thread, and I see you started a few threads already.
Thanks for the tip, I just started w/Sprint after 14yrs w/Verizon. Went to take advantage of better prices; but the "experts " in the Sprint 'Tech Experts' chat app have been found wanting in ways that have impacted my experience. I'll try to keep to your correction.
In the Unlocking Bootloader thread there is a whole list of fone flavors &sthe corresponding updates. Guess I was confused. I had to go searching around the 'net & HTC's site to get the U11 User manual.
I'd've hoped HTC would've made it easier to find, or put the link in the Quick Start notes in the original box. Oh well. XDA folks are helpful…

I just tried connecting an USB Sandisk drive to test OTG. Using the native file manager, it sees the flash drive. I formatted it, I can transfer or copy files to and from it, however only from Internal Storage and not External. I have Solid Explorer as well. The only problem is both Root Explorer and Solid Explorer the flash drive doesn't show up. Where exactly do you see the flash drive in Solid Explorer? Not really an issue as in TWRP I can transfer and copy files from the Internal and External Storage to the flash drive no problem.
Hi there,
First of all, sorry because English is not my mother tongue. I will try to explain my problem here as well as I can but I say sorry in advance for any error that I could make when writing this post here.
Few days ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. I have barely used it but after few days I realised that nearly 50Gb (49.3 Gb) are already taken by "System/user data" according to what it is specified in the "Device care" storage options of the phone.
As I said, I have had no time to use the device yet apart from receiving a pair of calls with it and trying to install the F-Droid application. The day when I installed F-Droid I downloaded from there the Termux terminal to check if I could be able to check the F-Droid apk agaisnt the signature to verify the download.
One of the days I began to receive notifications to upload the system. I received many of these and I proceeded to allow all of them. There was a moment when I had the impression that the notifications were too many and when I began to read them carefully I noticed that some of them were similar to the previous ones. Notifications continued but I stopped to allow them. By then the display of the device has changed. I think this was due to the change from Android Oreo to Pie.
Some time after I realised about the problem that I mention here. I have not saved any content to the phone yet (no photos, no videos, even I have not set my email there yet).
I tried to reset the mobile to its factory settings. I had no worries of doing that because as I said I had nothing yet important on my phone. After trying that a pair of times the problem of the system storage was still there.
I have tried to use CCleaner and LTE CLeaner to solve this issue without any success. I have tried to dial *#9900# on the phone and then select from menu - "delete dumpstate/logcat" as proposed in Androidforums. I was able to perform this latter mentioned procedure but nothing changed (I have read that for some people is not possible to do this latter because their carriers do not allow them to use this option - *#9900#-)
The other solution that I read and that I have not tried yet is to root the phone and manually trying to find and delete the files which may be taking the storage, however I am hesitant to do so because I have no experience at all and it is a brand new and expensive phone as you know. I feel bad thinking about trying to root and solve this problem by myself and voiding completely my guarantee of the device.
I am still in the period of 15 days in which I can return the phone according the law for protecting customers of my country, however I am afraid that if I go back to the store from where I bought the device and ask there for a change to a new Note 9 they might tell me that everything is just my fault for having installed some apps from outside the Google and Samsung official apps stores.
Do you think I am already out of guarantee for just installing F-Droid and Termux?
Could you give me some advice about how to deal with this issue? Would be possible to avoid the rooting procedure to solve this problem?
Thank you very much for your help.
Any help so far?
Ok the system user data is where apps store their stuff. If you didn't root then you don't even have access to it. So I'm betting that most of it is normal storage stuff. Even my 64 gb uses 22gb of stuff that I can't touch but that is normal.

Hi, thank you very much for you answer.
No, I do no think that 50 GB of unknown storage is something normal.
Anyone giving some advice about what to do?

Well considering that without root you have no access to that partition. I am almost sure that it is normal for the apps you have installed. The only way to find out for sure is to factory reset and look at the storage amount is by default. The more apps you install the more that partition will fill up. ITs not unknown. IT is app data. You must be new to android.

Like I said. That is a partition you have zero control over without root. Mine is stiing at 22gb out of 64.
Even if you did clear it out. You wouldn't be able to use that storage for anything as it is not a user access able storage area
Another pic:
The first time when I passed CCleaner in the storage analysis section of that app it pointed out just something more than 2 GB of system data ... however as I said before the effective taken storage showed by Device care was still nearly 50GB.
Also there is discrepancy with the "Files" app from Google. This latter just point point out to 14.46 GB used out of 512 GB.

50gb out of 512 sounds about right for a samsung device. I wouldnt trust CCleaner. Also without root no app will be able to even read anything on the system partition properly.
The system is broken up into like 20 different partitions.
To be honest I wouldnt worry about it and here is why. Even if you cleared it out and made it empty you still would not be able to use that space as it is for app data only. Which samsung encludes alot of.
Ok, thank you very much for you help Solitarios.lupus
