[Q] How does ambient display drain battery? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't understand, the meaning of ambient display is to turn on screen for like, 2 seconds after we receive important notification and that happens maybe 3-4 times in a day, thats 8 seconds of having screen on, and why does that drain battery? ..

Because we have LED and not amoled displays.

But still if not all pixels turn off on black screen, its still only 2 seconds of screen being on...

I'm sure there is also some process that's always running that contributes to the drain. If you look at the specs for the N6, its standby time is cut by something like 80hrs when you have ambient display turned on, and it has an AMOLED display. So there has to be something more to it than just the display.

I believe the battery drain comes from a core staying awake waiting for input (notification).

2 seconds of screen on uses more battery than 0 seconds of screen on.
Also its "listening" for "pick up" events.

Is lollipop ambient display different than one in paranoid Android? They have same thing but I never heard anyone from saying it drains battery

No idea. But anything that turns on display will use battery. Kinda obvious really.

Found out what was killing my battery: Auto brightness

Since I'm outside a lot all day, auto brightness was killing my battery by constantly cranking up the brightness. I've since lowered it to about 30%, and surprisingly it's still bright enough out side at that level, and I'm at 30 minutes screen time with 90% battery left, which translates to about 5 hours screen time until it's dead.
So for those having battery issues, try this out. Even if you aren't outside a lot, I still think autobrightness kills the battery since it's constantly using sensors to find out what lighting condition you are in.
The auto brightness is too aggressive.. the screen is much brighter than it needs to be for given conditions.
I also always wondered why auto brightness sensors are on the front, because it doesnt make sense. If the sensor is on the front, it sees YOUR background.. if it was on the back, then it would see the actual background that you would be looking at the phone on.
Agree. It consumes noticably more battery with auto brightness. I also noticed that i can have brightness at full blast and get amazing battery compared to auto brightness on and compared to my previous phones in general

Same here I work in an outside environment and the screen is vibrant enough for me to see even when the screen is at 40-50%. In fact I turned off auto brightness the very first day I got the phone because it did seem to be a bit too aggressive.

1 hr 35 mins screen time and at 70%.
It was definitely the auto brightness eating my battery previously.

[Q] Prevent display turning on when charge reaches 100% on Gear 2

Is there any way to prevent the display turning on when charge reaches 100% on Gear 2?

So that's what that bright light was last night that woke me up. My gear1 never did that lol.
i haven't noticed mine doing that. i put it to charge at night, the display turns on, then off and in the morning the display is still off....

It only comes on for a few seconds when it hits 100% charge and then turns off again.
oh, ok... so the screen turns on for a couple seconds then turns off....
whats the problem then?
maybe just put your watch face down on a little towel

Battery life?

Hi,
I have the s2 classic and I love it. I have read on CNET that they were able to get nearly 3 days of battery life before charging. I can't get 24hrs of usage before charging. I have changed the brightness to 5 (the screen does shut off and is not on the always on mode), I shut off wifi and NFC . I am not using it all that much, what is everyone else getting on average? I just want to know if I might have a lemon.
Thanks

Hey @APT-ART , You can't try to turn off the automatic heart sensor for longer work on battery. Also the black background (pure black, so pixel are not lighted at all for that part of the face) will help to improve it.
For me it depends on how many notifications there are during the day, what applications I am using and how I charged it last time (I recommend to clean both the back part of the watch and the wireless charger as well). Also for some faces the brightness level of 2 or 3 should be enough to use it as a normal watch WiFi on but NFC off, also the automatic heart sensor turned on but less regular setting.
The battery stands for me for about 30 - 40 hours. But for the first two times I've got only about 16-18. Just let it discharged to 0%, then charge it to 100% without turning on. Good luck!
I keep my brightness at 3, keep always on watch face turned on, tilt to wake off, heart rate off, wifi on, nfc off, S voice watch face listening off, get probably 50 notifications per day and after a 16 to 18 hour day have about 40 to 50% battery left.
I think S Voice watch face listening, higher brightness, and tilt to wake (especially at a higher brightness) does the most damage to battery life.

Really good tip, I am going to let the watch discharge to 0% and see what happens. thanks! :good:
With very light usage I can easily get 3+ days. I turned off nfc and WiFi. I left on the heart rate scanning. I use it as a stand alone watch at work since I can't use my phone. I have the brightness at 3 and ambient display off / tilt to wake on. Not ideal usage for some, but it's a good setup for me.

I'm assuming everyone here has the non 4g version and that's why you guys are getting pretty good battery life. Got my S2 yesterday with 4g and fully charged overnight. Took off charger and about 8 hours later the S2 is at 38%. Not happy but going to try that discharge tip. To see if it helps. Also may have to tweak some other settings. I had the Gear S 4g and it didn't drain that much. I can usually get a days worth out of it.
you need several cycles to really know what kind of battery life you can expect; one days worth wont tell you a thing
How do you change the heart sensor setting?

You can change it by going into the s health settings on the watch. Options for auto heart rate are frequent, moderate, or off. These settings are separate from if you actually go in and start and exercise. I have my auto turned off (to conserve battery) but when I go in and actually start an exercise session on the watch, it will monitor heart rate. The auto heartrate is just for random monitoring throughout the day....having it set to off will not impact monitoring when you start an exercise.

Ambient Display Battery Drain?

I've been trying to turn on ambient display and keeping it up all night to see how the battery drains, and i found out that it drains an extra 10-15% over an 8 hr period. Is this normal or is there something wrong?

No i've seen the same and turned it off, the only option I have on in there is the tap to wake

High battery drain from Ambient Display

Is it just me or does the Ambient Display on this device have a pretty high battery drain?
AccuBattery reports 14% in 9 hours screen off drain with 91% of the time being deep sleep.
I'm coming from an S8 where the AOD drain is barely noticeable.
Is this normal or am I missing something?

I just did and will see if that gets rid of the drain. Was just one of the minor reasons to get the Pixel over the Zenfone 6 ^^'

So how did it go?
Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk
If you turn the phone face down (or otherwise block the proximity sensor) the screen completely turns off. So it is pretty easy to control when the always on screen is on or off. I turn my phone face down overnight and usually see a 2% reduction in battery over 7-8 hours.
I think with the always on screen on, I see a drop of between 1-1.5% per hour on average. But my phone is also having more notifications and other activity that time of day too which keeps it from deep sleep.
tl/dr - you can leave the "always on screen" setting on all the time. If you don't need the screen and want to save battery, simply turn your phone face down and the screen shuts down completely after about 10 seconds.
Thanks for the input, everyone, I now settled with leaving it on and turning it face down over night or whenever I don't need it.
It just seems that this phone has a significantly higher standby drain than my former S8 in general. Already checking for some wakelocks or other causes for drains with BBS, but maybe it's just normal and I'm being paranoid. It's not an abnormally high drain either, guess I'm just spoiled ^^'
You don't have to put your phone face down. You just need to disable the ambient display and wake it up temporarily by double-tapping on the screen of lifting the phone, whenever you want to check the time or notifications.

I turned off ambient display also and switched over to double tap the screen to see my notifications without pressing the power button or unlocking.
