Stuck in headphone mode!? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried everything including:
reboot
flashing new rom
going completely stock
cleaning out the jack
plugging in and out different headphones.
I found one solution but its only a temporary one. i downloaded an app, SoundAbout, that forces my phone out of headphone mode, but i want a permanent fix. thanks for any help.

Sounds like a hardware problem, so probably best to simply RMA the device.

Headphone jack will sense when headphones are plugged in. It sounds like a hardware problem to me also

I had that issue pop up on my phone, it's either a glitch with your ROM or its hardware. Carefully try to clean any lint or dust out of the jack and see if that helps, if not then flash a known stable ROM and see if that helps, if neither help, consider RMA or repair/replace yourself if you're comfortable doing it
Edit: I had a brain fart when writing this, I saw that you said you tried going stock but for some reason ignored that point when writing this reply xD sorry

Audio Stuttering

Hello everyone,
I recently obtained an S3 i535. At first, it was working very well. Suddenly the audio became wonky. Now, all audio that emanates from the phone speaker "stutters". This includes ringtones, notifications, music...even the boot audio on startup cuts in and out. Audio through the headphones works perfectly.
I am not completely sure when it started, but it seems that it was right around the time that I rooted.
I HAVE Odin'd back to 4.1.2, with no luck. The stuttering persists.
Also, FYI - at one point, this phone had shattered glass. . I had the glass replaced just before rooting....
Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance...

Can you provide us a little more detail? Stuff like:
Software:
What ROM are you running?
Are you running any audio mods?
Have you tried re-rooting?
What root method did you use?
Hardware:
Have you recently dropped the phone?
Have you tried to clean the phone's speaker with canned air?
Etc.
Thanks!
Sorry, I left out some info.
Running stock 4.1.2... just flashed back to stock. (problem has ocurred on multiple roms)
First time around used Casual root method.
I have not rerooted.
I have not dropped the phone recently and have not tried to clean the speaker with compressed air.
Thanks for helping.

Also, I just discovered that the sound works MUCH better when the phone is plugged in and charging. Not perfectly...but very nearly perfect.
If I unplug the charging cable. The audio barely works, if at all.
Though maybe this info might help with the mystery...
Thanks again

If its charging and sitting on my night stand like it is right now, it works well. If I touch the screen, even without picking it up, it starts to cut out. Do you think it sounds like a hardware problem?
Could installing TWRP have anything to do with it? I installed it right after rooting/unlocking.
I am going to try to flash back to the first 4.1.2 ota. If that doesn't work, I will try to flash to 4.1.1. Personally, i think something got messed up during the root process because it didn't go smoothly the first time....I had to try a second time to get it to work, then the problem started.
Btw, this was my friend's phone. She dropped it, shattered the glass and wanted to get an iPhone. I convinced her to give me the phone, then I had the glass repaired. The speaker was working perfectly until around the time I rooted.

Software is never intermittent , hardware is. I suspect you have a lose connector to the speaker inside, I can;t tell you how to fix it, but I'm sure you can find some disassemble instructions that will show you the connectors.

I have discovered that, after a battery pull, the speaker works much better, then deteriorates over time. I am confused.

No sound via headphone jack or speaker: Stock JB

I picked up this phone from a frustrated buddy. It has no sound via headphone jack or speaker. I installed PowerAmp, so that I could tell if the headphone jack was detecting the headphones, and it is. It originally had GB, but I upgraded to JB stock via Kies and the problem persists. He did a factory reset before he gave it to me to tinker with.
Oddly enough, the in call ear speaker works fine! When I put the call on speakerphone, I get no audio, so I assume that uses the rear speaker also?
It's a really cool little phone, so I'd like to get it working. I'm guessing it's hardware, and I have no problem tearing down a phone (I've replaced glass before on numerous phones for friends). Any ideas where to start? I see both the headphone jack assembly and the lower speaker assemblies are both available reasonably. I'm inclined to just replace the rear speaker assembly, but kinda stumped as to why the headphone jack doesn't provide any audio, so maybe that's not the way to go. Anyone have any tips on where to start, based on my diagnosis?
Start with flashing back to stock UCMC1 ROM using Odin. Many times Samsung Kies attempt to "upgrade" leaves some things behind and it doesn't do a clean install.
Even after you flash with Odin you still have to go to recovery and wipe/factory reset data and cache.
Links to how to use Odin, where to get stock ROM and restore to stock are all in stickies and threads for newbies by Vincom in this forum under development tag.
Please read well before attempt.

OK, I flashed JB stock ROM via Odin, but same issue persists. Seems like it's hardware, so anyone have an idea what to replace next?
So both bottom speakers (speaker phone) and headphone jack produce no sound? But the ear piece does. Correct?

Yes. The only speaker that makes sound is the ear piece during calls. The headphone jack produces no discernible output, nor does the 'loudspeaker' on the back, for lack of a better term! I assume there is a boot-up sound, like my AT&T Note, but it's dead silent at boot too, which jives with the other symptoms.
Hope that helps!

This is one of those strange things ... any waterdamage signs?
I'm thinking try factory reseting from recovery (wipe everything), and then also flash stock JB I727UCMC1 using Odin.
That should rule out all of the software things we wonder.

I did these earlier, but had no luck. I did open the phone and have ordered a lower speaker assembly for $8. I didn't see any water damage in the lower half of the phone when I cracked it open. If this doesn't fix it, I may splurge and spend $6 to try the headphone jack. If THAT doesn't work, I'm going to part it out

[Q] No sound over speakers (ringtone works)

Hello!
I've got an strange problem with the audio on my Nexus 5. If I play music without headphones, there's no audio output through the phone speakers. But if I press the Volume-Up-Button the typical sound is played through my phone speakers, and also the ringtone when I'm called is hearable.
If I plug in a headset, every sound is played through the headset, like normally.
I've got the newest CyanogenMod Nightly and I already tried returning to stock, but it doesn't help
It's really frustrating, it suddenly occured, from one day to another.
Looks like my Nexus is always thinking that theres a headset plugged in, even if there isn't. And there's also nothing in the headphone jack.
I've already searched, but hadn't found someone who has a similiar problem, so I thought I ask here, before I contact the Google Support.
Maybe someone of you can help me. Thanks in advance!
Greetings,
Markus
PS: Sorry for my bad english

Have you looked at the media volume level in settings/sounds/volumes? Just to rule it out.
Couple of things.
The phone could think that the headphones are still plugged in. Try plugging it in and pulling out a couple times.
It could be RMA time if you go back to completely stock and this still happens.

I got that problem since more than a week already and I still use my phone, so I plugged it in and out almost permanently, but thanks.
And yeah, looks like it's RMA time, unfortunately.

Then you can do a data factory reset or reflash the factory image and if that doesn`t help yo might contact Google for a RMA (as allready stated above by another user).

already did a factory reset and flashed the factory image, like mentioned in my first post.
Hey, OP, did you find a solution to this? My phone just started doing this today as well, and I'd prefer to avoid RMA if possible.
Well, I found out the phone had been dropped in some semi-liquid food. So I opened up the back cover a bit, found some remains and cleaned it up and now it works fine again. Woot! Not sure if that is relevant to anyone else though (or if it really made a difference or was just a coincidence), lol.
In my case, it wasn't something like that. I just contacted Google for a RMA and got a new device very fast.
Some liquid inside the phone
Hey there!
This afternoon my Nexus 5 started to have the same problem you have related. I remove the back cover and I discover that it was full of liquid against the surface. I was running with the phone in my pocket (condensed sweat), so I recommend not to do that.
I have dried it and it seems that doesn't work yet =(
I hope my answer will help anyone with the same problem (at least to know a possible source of the problem).

[Completed] Turning off headset mode.

Hello there for some reason my phone is in headset mode and I know this because I have the headphones icon up top. This mean I can't listen to music, call or hear anything through the phone's speakers unless I have headphones plugged in.It appears to be a hardware issue because I have done the usual factory resetting and everything else down to try cleaning the headphone port. Can anyone help suggest an app other than soundabout as it doesn't work with ART and is a little quirky for me?Also does anyone have such an app?I'm using an LG G2 D802 on 4.4.2.Thanks.
Droid2drummer said:

was at the beach and after that I started experiencing this.I did all the above. The only option maybe repair but I'll like to know any other software alternative that may help avoid that. It's the same on every rom. After changing my run time to art it got fixed for a day and then came back.I'm torn!
I think sometimes wrong size 3.5 mm headphones do that to your phone's jack. There's a little metal strip inside the jack that gets bent and shorts out the Eject sensor. I had that happen on my phone.
I am afraid its hardware, and you do need repair. Any app will only give you limited respite.

[HELP] Speakers not Working

So, I ordered OnePlus One from the Swappa Boneyard for $185US. The only issue that was advertised was that the stereo speakers were not working and had been replaced, but still didn't function. I can hear media and call audio through the ear piece, but I am stuck using headphones and a Bluetooth speaker for an actually audible media audio experience.
Until recently, I owned another OnePlus One that encountered the dreaded sim card slot failure. The motherboard isn't modular, so replacement of it is was possible. But, it had 100% working speakers.
I played Dr. Frankenstein and swapped the motherboards in hopes of having a fully functional device. Unfortunately, the sound still does not work.
My initial conclusion was that the speaker I/O on the motherboard was faulty, but now I am seeing others with the same issue (rerouting of stereo speaker audio through the earpiece or having no media audio at all).
I have tried using Soundabout and Clean Master to clean up any residual files, flashing OxygenOS, and have even switched ROMs several times (clean installs, of course). But with no luck.
Obviously, the warranty is void now. So I'm turning to my fellow XDA hackers and OPO users who may have had experience with the same issue for some tips.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
With love,
MikeCriggs
Hello,
Try flashing *fastboot* images of CM11S 44S version and troubleshoot your issue on it or you can flash ColorOS images
I found similar thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/speakers-t2875100

I already saw that thread and it wasn't too helpful for me. I will, however, fastboot flash back to CM11S and see if that makes any difference. It may not work, but it can't hurt. Thank you for the suggestion.

Mike, did you ever get your speakers working? I'm having the exact same symptoms. No sound from the speakers but wired headset and Bluetooth headset both work. Flash to LineageOS made no difference. I replaced the speaker module but it made no difference. I'm guessing it's either the motherboard or the flex cable from the M/B to the speakers module. I don't have another flex cable to swap however.
