Took off my case and found... a mysterious bend. - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I'm kind of sad about it really. It has never been significantly dropped. My friend dropped his like 4 feet onto a metal bench press bar and only dented the side slightly inward. I seemed to have managed to bend my phone. It no longer lies flat, it rocks, and there is this strange outward dent like a support beam needed somewhere to go. You can clearly see the bend when you look at the side view volume buttons. I'm sure my warrenty is voided as they would likely claim this cannot be from normal use. I've dropped it onto carpet a couple times and thrown it on my bed. It remains a mystery. Maybe my pants are too tight? For reference this is the case I use. Not over the top protection but it should save it from most soft falls I would think. Pictures attached. Sorry for the eh quality. It was a dark room and I don't have a macro lens for my DSLR.

Looks to me like possible damage from when you removed the case itself?

That's a good thought. Maybe, but I think the case is honestly too soft for that. I would expect the plastic to tear before the side bends, although who know. It's not a super thick case and the little lip that could, unlikely, fit in the small gap is rather thin. Plus the power button being bent and it not sitting quite flat on the screen have me skeptical about that. I don't think I've ever ripped the case off hard either, I dunno. I'm honestly not sure what to think about that possibility. Think it could pull the metal out like that?

Really thin piece of metal there. If the case caught caught down between and you pried it off I could see it bending like that. Just a thought.

well

screen toward butt, tight jeans, and a slight bend over would do exactly that.bent the wrong direction for anything much else...looks to be very easily repaired you may damage speaker covers getting the back off the phone...once off, massage. the area gently and the whole back gently and should be able to get it back in the position with very little and I mean very very little effort else you can kink it badly..

ok just saying, somewhere around here there is a thread on the replacement backs and speaker grills youTube is a wonderful thing and sure beats being without your device.
but if you choose to do it yourself make sure you watch all the videos you can get your hands on I have run into misleading ones in the past and done mild damage to external components due to very vague and misleading videos but if you do your homework and you are thorough and believe the video you watched to be very thorough they will usually tell you what parts you need to purchase in advance and it should only take the average person with an hour to do any repairs of the sort

I've bent my phone the exact same way.. Just get a small screw driver, butter knife etc.. Tape the end incase you slip and won't scratch it and push it back in.

Mine bent too. I think it has to do with the case. It probably bent it. I tried to push mine back in, but to no avail. Luckily for me though, my volume button ended up bending too. It bent to the point where it didn't work anymore. So I took to Verizon and they gave me a replacement no questions asked. No more bends. [emoji2]

Called them and they said they don't cover any physical damaged of any kind regardless of how it happened. It also apparently cracked my screen from it being uneven. And my free replacement was up in November.

My is bent the same way. I am very careful with it and have treated very gently. Contacting HTC to see what they say.

They told me I could send it in for repair and dispute the charges later and that it was my only option. I don't have that kind of time though and I cannot afford to be without a phone that long. I'm currently job seeking so I live on the damn thing. Keep me posted on what they say to you.

Same thing happend to my phone, I just bent the metal back into its place.

I recently sent my M8 in for warranty repair, due to blown speakers (I manage a machine shop, so you can imagine the metal particles everywhere). I had dropped the phone on asphalt this past summer (2 days before I received the TPU case I had ordered), gouging up the back, and also had a dent/impression in the back of the case, like it had been pressed hard against an edge or corner of something.
I went through HTC directly, and they never questioned the damage to the back, and sent back my phone with a nice and shiny new back on it. Their customer service is superb.

My screen ended up cracking in one small spot due to the bend. HTC said I can send it in and see what their warranty team says and if needed appeal the charges since it bent on its own. They did say no guarantee that would work though. Think it's worth the shot? I also have insurance so anything more than 100 dollars (including the cost of shipping it in) is a waste.

If your phone is less than a year old, don't even bother with your "insurance". Just talk to HTC. I thought for sure my phone was out of warranty with HTC (I don't have Asurion), but to my surprise, it was still in warranty. No deductible, and you just pay for shipping to their depot in Texas.

I did, they said the main issue was the screen crack. It's not covered after the first six months. And whether or not they'd cover it in this case is up to whoever processes it at the warehouse.

Cracked Screen. :(

Do not drop this phone even with a case and screen protector.
What happen was I knock it off my desk to the wood floor and it fell on its side not on the screen and this is the result of it. Phone still works but the digitizer and LCD are both cracked. *Sigh*
At least I have insurance even if I don't want to use it.

Just don't plug it in to charge then forget and get out. I've killed two chargers this way. That is why I buy the cheap retractable ones. A) cheap to replace, B) they just snap off, IE not doing much(if any) damage to the usb port of the phone.

Its so hit or miss man. Ive dropped my Incredible from 5' off a breakfast bar onto tile and nothing but then you hear of others dropping on wood floors at a foot and utter destruction. It just takes that one special spot.
Hell look at the Nexus one when it first released, they had the videos showing the "Genetically altered" Glass they were using with little what looked like erasers bending the glass a million times and some sort of tumbler throwing it around to show the durability and then a week after release they said "The Nexus one should not be placed in pockets due to the high risk of stress cracks" Ahh duhh???!!!
wow i feel your pain. same happned to me with the droid 1
Did that to my EVO the second week I had it after launch. Another $100 I had to put into that phone.
No insurance on my Thunderbolt...we'll see how that plays out.

Glass near search button

Its pressable and loose there is there a way to fix this? Its near the edge. I heard if you put something heavy on it overnight the adhesive will reattach.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Mine is also somewhat loose, but it is like that on purpose. Flexibility is key if you do not want your screen to crack even easier. If your screen is completely rigid it will not survive a fall as well as a flexible screen.
HTC made it that way, I believe.

Well that technique might work. Obviously you'd want to put a piece of cloth in between the phone and the object you're using as a weight.
Or, if it's on the edge as you say, one of those wooden clothes pins, or other type of spring clamp (I'd go easy on that option, some of those clamps are powerful and could be too much.)
I don't know how permanent this method would be in the long run, especially when hotter whether comes around. If the adhesive was poorly applied in the first place, or if the adhesive was of a weak batch at the factory, the problem, it seems to me, will just resurface.
Though it's a PITA, the only 100% successful fix is a warranty replacement.

I just tried pushing down in the area on my phone, and I see what you're saying.
There's a flexibility, but it's uniform -- it will flex slightly anywhere along that edge that I press.
Without more detailed info from the op, it's hard to tell whether this is what he's referring to, or, since he did indicate "near the search button," whether the just that corner is lifting noticeably compared to the others.

There is actually thread about this already, but I will say something. I had this problem, except mine grew worse and now the bottom middle of the screen has lifted just like the edge. I have been fighting with ATT to replace my phone under warranty since I don't want to wait 2 weeks on htc. I had to threaten to cancel all my ATT services and report them to the bbb on their face book page before some one from corporate contacted me. Now they are over nighting me a referbed.

It is actually a manufactures defect, according to both the htc reps I talked to, but believe me it is a hassle to get att to do anything. They wanted me to pay 125 for insurance or 399 for a refurb. I was like are you f***ing serious? You want me to pay the "new" price for a refurb phone under warranty when I already payed out of contract price, and the phone came from the manufacture that way..Any way long story short after a few threats of cancellation and a 3-way call with htc, they told me to drive an hour and a half to a device support center, and gave me a 25 dollar credit... This pissed me off even more, so I ranted on their face book and some one from corporate told me to email them and now they are replacing my phone.

I just now noticed it on mine as well. Mine isn't even noticable unless you're trying to press on it and feel it "press down", but even then it barely moves. There is an adhesive layer underneath and I imagine just applying some heat from a heat gun may re-attach the glass to it.
Well just got my referb in the mail, screen still does the same, but no where near what the old one did. The old one would flex half the bottom left of the screen and cause major discoloration. If so, now I'm REALLY convinced ATT doesn't do **** to the refurb phones to fix them prior to resending out the phone to another customer for a warranty replacement. Captivate reburbs were/are dog****.
The least they can do is check to see the phone they are sending out as a replacement doesn't have the same problem as the phone they are replacing.
Hope you don't have to go through this crap again. Remember what you, yourself said, the other one just got worse.
HTC may be the only true solution.

Well if the last phone is any sign about this one. I will have already upgraded to the holiday since my upgrade is this month and that's the phone I am waiting for, this will still have a warranty on it, so I won't have a problem sending it in for 10 days - 2 weeks to have it fixed completely. Right now I don't have a back up phone, since my blackberry took a poop which is why I bought this out of contract.

Thankfully I'm not noticing anything wrong with any of my corners of my inspire, but I really should get some type of screen protector for this phone, I'm starting to notice some very small lines on the glass, I guess they were right when they mentioned that the glass can't be scratched by a key, but can be easily scratched by small dust.

I'm sure you can scratch it with a key. Metal is metal. It will eventually abrade anything except another metal that is harder than itself.
It's not standard "on the shelf" dust. It's the dust of materials that are hard enough to have abrasive qualities that are going to scratch things.
I've had my phone since March 2nd, heavy usage every day. Never had a screen protector. Around all sorts of potential damaging particulates. ZERO scratches, scuffs, or marks of any kind.
Always kept in a felt lined belt holster. Never set down with screen facing down. Never put it in my pocket, no matter if the pocket is empty or not.
Obviously, dropping the phone is a whole other scenario, but aside from that, it's all in the care and handling...

AHHHHH Shattered screen

So I destroyed my first smartphone. I suppose it's pretty good since I have carried a smartphone since the original iPhone, but I forgot my phone was in my pocket and when I took off my pants it slipped out of the pocket and landed face down on the tile floor totally shattering the screen.
My question is has anyone had to send their phone to HTC for screen replacement? If so what did it cost. I don't want to do it myself and void the warranty just in case anything happens to it in the future.

Totally sucks. I am sending mine in to HTC for repair because it is less than a month old and I don't want to void the warranty by doing it myself but; you can get the glass for it for around $50 if you want to try it yourself.
I just watch a screen replacement online... Which convinced me that sending it back is the right thing to do, especially while it is under warranty. The crummy thing for me is that I have already been to AT&T with this phone to get it warranty replaced because of constant data drops and wifi issues but they did not have any in stock so I am playing the waiting game. Now I have to pay $200 to replace the screen of a phone I will be ditching as soon as it gets back.
Note to Everyone: GET A RUGGED CASE! my hard shell was no match for a relatively small fall, I am sure this would have held up in the Otterbox I have always had on my phones.

I have the Benks Magic Cookies case. It is really a nice case but it doesn't offer any protection on the glass at all. This is more of a keep scratches off the back case, not at all a shock protection case. I knew that when I got it, this just put an exclamation point behind that idea. I planned on using it as my "not at work go out to dinner type case" but with how easily this broke I think I will use the otterbox exclusively when it gets here.
I see. Well that sucks. I was actually debating whether to get that one before buying my bestbuy case.

Galaxy S4 Active dropped on concrete - how rugged is it? (pics)

Well, I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active onto a concrete sidewalk. I am not as careful as I should be since I would drop my SII without worry since I had the Ballistics case on it. My new Active had no case. It fell directly on a corner, and of course missed the hardened rubber/plastic part and hit the outer metal shell directly. It knocked a snap out of the bottom right corner opposite the impact point. I took the case off and installed it again and everything snapped in normally.
My screen is fine and everything works normally. Aside from asthetics, nothing is different than before the drop. I have read about some regular S4 screens breaking from far less. Maybe there is something to the "rugged" nature of the active.
Anyways, a picture is worth a thousand words so here are four pics. My first time uploading pics here so hopefully they turn out ok.
Ouch! My sincerest condolences.
I would be terrified while picking it up..
Any 5 inch touchscreen device shouldn't ever be considered rugged haha

Sand out the part? lol.
I dropped mine today too, which is weird because I never drop my phone. I have a scuff mark on the metal outer shell like you. Pretty disappointed it scratched so easily.

It's not a rugged phone ladies... It's the same as an s4 just water and dirt proof.
You drop it and it will break just as easy as a regular s4.
Ouch!
Ouch that sucks! Yeah I just got my Active today and I need to get a case and screen protector ASAP.
I didn't think this phone would be drop proof. It was advertised as waterproof/dustproof.
At least the screen is not cracked.
Ouch! At least a case will cover the damage and the screen is not cracked. One of the reasons I returned mine. It is a bit slippery. The ATT manager asked why I was returning it and I said no cases, no support and he scoffed at me. I then asked him when is the last time a Galaxy Device was launched and cases were not available on that day at the store? Even my captive had a case at ATT the day I bought it...It has been over a week and you can't even get an overpriced cases from ATT? No thanks.

That is what I was thinking. With a case it won't even show. I did buy the Best Buy protection so supposedly I can get unlimited exchanges but still...
I know it wasn't made with drop protection, but it did hold up pretty well. If a case ever comes out I will have no worries at all.
I dropped my s4 in a puddle 2 days ago fully submerged and my heart sunk. Ripped it sort let it dry. Used some alcohol to get water out and it works fine. Not an active though.

people will do amazing things to get what they want. that said, perhaps food ought to be prioritized over cell phones/random crap you want. how did you break 3 s4's? you must have the worst case of butterfingers ever. i usually buy mine off contract or unlocked, but i have yet to accidentally destroy any cell phone. not everyone has the money to shell out for new stuff whenever they need it.
fortunately i dont have to worry about money, ever, but i still take very good care of whatever i have, and i have learned not to lend things out or let people use my stuff (especially drunk friends and cell phones or idiot friends and new sports cars).
seriously, how did you manage to break 3 already? i know one guy who drops his iphone about once a week.

Sounds like the case of "I haz monies." Paying full price 3 times sucks really really bad. I would hope you mean breaking the original, then breaking it at repair, and one more for good measure. Still, that's just crazy butterfingers, but I digress.
Op, I seriously doubt "rugged" means unchipable, or even blemish proof. If phone meets concrete from even three feet and the right angle, you'll either chip, dent, or scratch. In thing to be happy about is the glass or screen shattering. I'll take dents and chips over exploding screens any day. Still, not having cases for it is highly questionable. You'd think even Sammy would release a case, just to collect more money.

I cannot believe how ****ty the active is, this phone slipped out of my pocket and fell from about 10 inches up the day I bought it. The screen cracked in two places. Upper right corner and right below the back button.
However, I called at&t and they sent me a regular s4 free of charge and let me keep the mildly broken active. Never charged me or anything. If only I could find a replacement screen.

At this point, Samsung may be able to replace it cheaper than buying parts. Of course it's on the assumption you want it fixed today.

I don't understand why people who purchase this phone seem to think it is shock proof, drop proof and crush proof. It's marketed as being waterproof and dustproof.

I wish it had drop protection. But a case should fix that. I'm just thrilled about it being waterproof.

One of the reasons I got rid of my old S4 was because people were having the screen crack while in their pocket with no trauma. I haven't heard any such reports on the Active just yet. Honestly, the one time I cracked a screen it was on my Note 1 and it was a drop of similar height and I had a Trident case on it. It sucks, but I can't see blaming an electronic device when I'm the one dropping it.

Has your glass shattered yet?

I just purchased 2 of these during black friday and the back of my wife's phone just shattered in her hand. Mind you she has a case on it. It's 28 degrees F here today, and she went outside during her break and sent me a text saying the phone just shattered in her hand. The phone has never been dropped. Mine is still fine so far and I'm praying it doesn't happen to me lol. Has anyone experienced this yet?
the heat made the glass expand probs RIP
I got that into moto G. I was into my vehicle and the AC was on the phone holder was fixed above the AC vent , so the cool air was hitting the device back . in my country ( Qatar ) we have a very hot days and that days was 45C . so when I went out of my vehicle it cracked right away ! . always if u have this situation u need to just open the door open and make the air come's into ur vehicle then u can get ur phone out . GD Luck !.
You would of thought Wuawei would of conducted extreme temperature testing specifically after using a new technique and materials for the manufacturing of the rear cover.
Thanks for the heads up l have to be extremely careful now when lm in hot countries..
PS: I would contact Vmall/Huawei/Honor as this is a manufacturing flaw and they need to address this as your using your device in a normal manner.
Got another one on the way, hopefully we won't run into this issue with the new one. I've been super nervous about this. I really hope the the glass used on that phone was defective. Here's a pic. Notice it looks as if it starts where the flash is.

I'm sorry but I don't buy self exploding glass stories I read on forums.. The picture shown clearly shows the point of impact at the very top of the camera flash.. i'm not sure what kind of case she had but it probably was not strong enough to absorb the impact

Did you not read the op? Impact from what? The phone was never dropped or hit by anything. I don't do a lot of posting, but when I do, it's not to come post lies, or exaggerations, especially on a forum dedicated to mobile devices. On top of that, the case that's on the phone adds about 2cm to the back, but that's beside the point, simply due to the phone not even being in a situation that required the case or phone to take any impact what so ever.

I'm not calling you a liar and I did read the OP... with that said a phone doesn't have to be dropped... damage could occur right from someone's pockets, pocketbook or purse.
And in this case it was your wife I'm not sure where she stores or carries her phone, if she's like my wife or a typical woman its probably in her purse. Could have dropped her purse, someone could've sat on her purse who knows.. Close a car door on her purse?
But I'm sorry I stated again phones don't just crack on their own.

If you look up images of spontaneous glass breakage none of the images look like the OP phone which you can clearly see a point of impact.

The phone was in her hand when it cracked. She was taking pictures of herself, using the rear camera (which she obviously noticed that it wasn't broke at the time), sent me a pic, then she took another and this time noticed that it was shattered. Phone never left her hand as she was outside vaping. So I don't see what could have impacted the phone other than cold weather. It's very possible that the glass could have been defective, or it was forcibly assembled, in which would have caused pressure in the flash area due to it having a slight bevel around it. I just don't see how this is "impossible" when people buy defective items everyday. I posted to see if any other user has experienced this, not to argue or defend myself about how it happened. If you don't believe that things like this can happen, then why did you feel that you had to post your opinion?
My wife's iPhone cracked on its own.. we woke up in the morning and there was one straight crack just above the middle from each side of the bezels. We called Apple and they just needed pictures of the crack and they approved the free repair. So these random cracks do happen.
In any case, the phone came out in, I think, August? I haven't seen or heard of any similar reports of this happening, so unless lots of people's phones start shattering spontaneously from temperature shifts due to colder weather it's probably just a random crappy thing that can happen happening. I won the dead on arrival Core i5 4690K lotto when I built a friend's roommate a PC two or three years ago. **** happens sometimes.

already said than random cracks happened due to weather changing with the phone .
First ( Changing The Place Hot to cold or opposite )
Second ( Charging The phone while battery id very low will make device very hot and it the glass touch any cold material might crack .
Third : using the phone for long time while playing games will make the device hot from the back and if it touch a cold materiel might crack Also ! .
and there is many reasons to having a crack,
