Can anyone recommend a suitable waterproof/dustproof case, maybe something generic for an mp3 player or a "normal" phone, just something that is a snug fit that preferably I can hang around my neck. I work in a very dusty environment, I wear a mask all day and ear defenders, so if the ringing is obscured it is not a problem, I just check my notifications when I get the chance. I had one for my old Artemis which I found at a car boot sale but it has developed a hole and my pristine Diamond rattles about in it horribly. I am also about to go on a beach holiday and would like to have my Diamond hermetically sealed around my neck in the sea. Any suggestions would be welcome.

or you could have it surgically implanted into your arm.
Keep it in a sealable sandwich bag?

That is the kind of thing I'm after , but where can I get the surgery, I have tried implanting it in various other parts of my body already, another reason why I need that case!
And MrDerrickC won't it make my sandwiches taste funny after that?

My phone is on the pill!
condoms
Those phone condoms are called Skinz .. http://www.skins-mobile.com/
They do exactly what you want.. and they are a talking point..
I have used them loads.. They allow you to use the phone normally and are completely waterproof.
Possibly a bit expensive for everyday use as they are supposed to be 'disposable' ..
i have the invisible shield.. took me 1 hour to perfect it... but you cant tell my phone is covered with it.. its truly great.
but not waterproof.. but then why would i want my moby waterproof? over 10 years of mobile use.. never once had a water issue with any of them. I just dont takethem near the water...
im covered for accidental damage anyway.. its just scratches i hate to get on my diamond... and the invisi shield is superb to stopthat.
you mean you've never dropped a phone down the toilet? How hard wearing is your invisible shield please? It does sound interesting. It is more dust contamination than flood damage that is essential for me, unless I get a new job, which at the moment really does sound like a good option!
so can you still use the touch screen when you have one of those "skins" on it?
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/iPod-Classic-Cases/Design-Go/Design-Go-Dry-Sounds-MP3-Player-Waterproof-Case
these are really cheap !!
also if you get a mini usb to 3.5 mm headset socket adaptor your well away!
i got one from a service station on the M11 near bishops stortford for about £5.
the case is semi transparent but you can make out the screen quite well, great for reading ebooks in the bath!!! LOL
its water proof to 3 meters IPx8
and fits tightly with about 20mm space to one side if you jam your diamond to other side of the case and there's about the same to the top too so you can store you cash in it and go swimming on the beach

My sentiments exactly. I have a generic waist bag with a clip on it for normal, every-day use; I use the android slip for whenever I'm in formal wear; and I want to use this for at the gym (since I use workout programs on the phone and the stock headphones with track control anyway).
Well go for it and let me know how it is I need a new one soon because in 2 days I'm starting my P90X workout again and Love to listen to the perfect beat of music for it.

Got it in today....might have some pics for you tomorrow but I love it so far.

LOL someone doesn't exercise!!!
Let us know how it goes OP.
Is it secure?
I'd love to get an armband for running (ahh, love California) but worry about it falling out and just being heavy while swinging my arms.
pls let us know how it works while running!
I ordered one too so I'll let you guys know how it works when I receive it!
It's fantastic. Not only is it comfortable and fits the phone perfectly, but has just enough "give" that I can view a text message or look at what routines or weights I should be doing, and even type SMS responses (though I usually just go the lazy method and use voice input). I've also been using the stock Android headphones, so I clip the cord to the armband using the supplied clip (and I wrap the slack around the back of the phone). When I'm done, I pop the phone out of the silicone sleeve and toss it in my gym bag.
As far as the weight goes, the phone itself is the heaviest part, but it feels no heavier than my second generation Zune did. It IS kinda bulky, but hasn't gotten in the way of anything yet, and I don't expect it to. Just situate it on the very side of your arm, and it really can't interfere with anything. It does feel very secure, requiring a fair amount of "tug" to get the phone out of the silicone sleeve....not too much or too little, just right....definitely not gonna fall out, though - besides, if you have headphones in, the headphones themselves provide a natural tether to keep the phone in the silicone.
I've been a bit busy this last week (I just graduated from college on Sunday =D), which is why I don't have pics up, but if I remember, I'll pull the sleeve out of my gym bag when I come home tonight and take some pics for you guys. To me, this thing has been worth every penny.
How tight is the fit?
Do you think there would be problems with fitting a phone in that had a clear protector skin on it? I'm currently using the BestSkinsEver.com one.
And congrats on the graduation! Just graduated myself this past summer!
Thank you for this, I wonder when they were gonna make one of these I hate putting my nexus in my pocket while working out... We need this to show it off. lol.
I have a full body shield from Skinomi on mine and it fit just fine. As I said, it felt snug enough to be secure with just enough "give". Also, when you have headphones in, those act as an anchor.
Had to do my brakes and change over my brother's tires, so no pics today...hopefully tomorrow.

Motorola's and Sony's are generally pretty good quality.

Your advice is WRONG and dangerous, check the 100's of videos on youtube of i-diots who ruined their i-phones for youtube views.
From their website
My device has been treated with Liquipel; can I take it swimming or surfing?
No, the Liquipel treatment is a preventative coating and is meant to protect the internal, vital components of electronics from liquid corrosion in the event of accidental liquid exposure. Just as you would not intentionally throw your device on the ground after purchasing a case, you would not want to intentionally submerge your device in liquid after having Liquipel applied.
OP's link to waterproof skins look like a much better product, but its also not true WATERPROOF, more like Spashproof.
A cheap ZIP plastic bag will work best (the thicker the better)
That is true. I am getting my device liquipel'd, but you're right I'm not going to take it swimming with me. Totally different purpose
Do not DELIBERATELY wet your phone if using products like liquipel

There's no way we'll ever see a truly waterproof case that will let you use the phone while swimming. The phone itself would have to be designed to be waterproof from ground up.
The 2 main issues the case needs to overcome is the capacitive screen and the speaker/mic. A layer of water tends to block the touchscreen. This can be seen with wet applied screen protectors. The screen doesn't work properly until the water has been completely tried.
The more important issue is with the speaker/mic combo. In most cases watertight means air tight too. We all know what an airtight enclosure does for sound. How do you plan to make a phone call with decent volume through an airtight enclosure? Although it's possible to transmit sound through objects like with the cup/string method but like I said the phone would have to designed for use in water from the ground up.
We won't be seeing truly waterproof Nexus 4's anytime soon if at all.

what?
If your talking about airtight doesn't mean vacuumed environment... Air still exists inside the phone, waves can easily transfer from air -> plastic -> air...

um...I bought a waterproof case for my Xperia S. The touch screen works perfectly without the need to be dried.
About sound waves, it travels in water and air. Air tight doesn't mean soundless. A vacuum means soundless. Two completely different concept.
And why you want phone call under the water? Most of us who wants water proof case is to take to water sports and maybe take a few videos without damaging the device.
So yes, those cases exist, in the past, now, and in the future.
be careful when you say "never", because there is a possibility

umm, ya ..no I guess you don't get out a lot but I work at Best Buy and there is a case for the iphone 4, 4S, and 5 called lifeproof and it is waterproof up to 6 Ft my friend has it and he takes pictures underwater in my pool and they look awesome. Also about sound quality, sound quality is actually improved, I didn't believe it at first but the lifeproof case redirects sound from the bottom of the iphone and turns the whole back of the case into an amplifier, it's rather impressive technology. For plugging up the charger its no problem you just open the port, it says it keeps it's waterproof seal for thousands of open/shuts, and advises that you should open/shut it around 2 times a day and the seal should be fine. Mic works fine. The only downside to this case is the 80$ price and that you can't dock it without an extension everything else works great. And yes he does go swimming with it just not over 6ft deep.
The technology being completely possible, the nexus 4 is going to be one of the most popular phones because of its cheep price, amazing specs, being part of the pure android experience nexus line, which means tons of support from developers. It's going to be one of the most popular devices ever built and so i wouldn't doubt that they make a waterproof case for it.
Not meaning to bash you, next time just make sure to do a 10sec google search of "waterproof phone case" and see how hard they are to make before you rule out the chance of nexus 4 ever getting one/ getting one soon

That iottie case is only a temporary case and is not meant to stay on the phone for long. I've seen it at the store and it's not very durable and wont hold up for long. Why would you want a waterproof case on your phone all the time? Even the waterproof case for the iPhone is very bulky and you wouldnt want to keep that on the phone 24/7. There is no waterproof case like that for the nexus 4 and most likely never will.
Most of the time you can salvage a phone if it just took a quick dip, the phone will power down automatically so just let it sit for a few days to dry. I've heard that dunking the wet phone in 99% iso alcohol to displace the water since the alcohol will dry much faster also works well but never tried it.
I bought today sealabox 3xl for my nexus 4. Somebody have just try it?
For me the best waterproof cover is ipega. I writed to the manufacture some months ago to ask for an nexus 4 version. Plese do the same. Sorry for my English.

The Galaxy Active and the Xperia Z are both going to be waterproof, so I think that I will take my chances with those rather than paying 50 bucks for someone to spray paint my phone.
the problem with this waterproof case will be condensation when the cpu heats up after using the phone with gps for example! and if condensation is created in an air tight environment, the electronics of the phone will eventually see water!
That case is probably only good for just a few hours of stand by at a time and if you start recording underwater videos and your cpu starts heating up your gonna get some condensation in the phone!

Unless you phone is exuding water vapor it wont condense on to the inside of the case. Conversely your phone exuding heat would warm up the case driving away condensation.
Putting your phone into a case while in a humid environment then moving to a cold one would fog up the inside. Nothing else can really.
R3dRumz i dont mean to be dismissive but so long as your sealing the case in a humid environment the case will have the moisture within. If the phone is closed up in a dry environment its pretty much okay.
Anyone tried using NeverWet on their phone yet to make it waterproof?

I am not sure if the coating still allows conductivity so the ports will work.
It doesn't look like it conducts across the coating since the phone wasn't fried after they coated it, so that is a positive.
I use wireless for everything with this phone (wireless charging, bluetooth earphones, dropbox, etc.) so it wouldn't necessarily detract me as long as it doesn't affect those signals.
Another thing I am not sure about is how long it lasts (how often would you need to apply it to rely on it to work over time).
I am still trying to figure out why this hasn't been capitalized by any other manufacturer (car companies, electronic companies, clothing companies, anyone product really). There must be a downside besides the frost coating you get if you spray a thick layer on dark surfaces.
If anyone digs out more useful information please post it here!
This is actually pretty sweet!!!! I can think of a million uses for this! Good find OP!

I think if it is applied correctly to the original S4, it could work well. The video showed how to apply it to an iPhone, but I think there might be more to it than what they showed. The question becomes where to apply it and how much to use? Obviously it would just help add to water resistance and wouldn't make it completely waterproof. But for the Active, it might help to close the small gaps that seem to let a little water in (earphone and speaker holes, etc...), but again, the question becomes how much and where. I don't think spraying it on the screen will work out so well.

I know that has been an option for a while but I think the NeverWet has the same potential if applied correctly. I think the fact that the liquipel people apply it for you helps in the fact that they have experience in knowing how much and where to apply, but at the same time it means you would have to send the phone back to them for touch ups and reapplications...which can be expensive and time consuming.
And regardless of what either one of them claims, I would still just consider it an extra level of water resistance and not water proofing. I would like to see a blind test of several phones coated in each product and how well each product actually works in real world situations.

What they were saying in the video was to apply it to every hole and cut in the phone where water would get in through.
To me it looks like Liquipel is not the exact same thing. NeverWet created a consumer grade super hydrophobic solution. I am sure a mask is probably recommended, but you won't need to apply it in a vacuum to work and not harm your lungs.
Liquipel doesn't apply the coating based on the device. They are like a factory, putting the phone in the chamber, creating a vacuum, releasing the gas (first coating), and then "plasma" (second coating) to bind the gas to your phone. It potentially is better, since it probably is an even thickness of a coat everywhere the gas reaches (including the insides), but I can think it can also be worse since they probably kept the amount of coating to a minimum to not obstruct the screen. If you apply by hand, you would use more or less depending on the location, which sounds more reliable to me.
Galaxy S4 is $59.99 + $10 for priority shipping. If they gave you a guarantee that it will be water resistant or they will reimburse you for the phone, than obviously it would be a better option, but they don't. In fact, they disclaim:
Liquipel applies a preventative coating designed to aid in the event of accidental liquid exposure, and assumes no responsibility for water damaged devices. Liquipel does not recommend your device ever come in contact with liquid.
That's false advertisement. Showing how you put a phone you treated in the water, and than saying we don't recommend you ever do it...
I don't like that they are using celebrities either.

I agree with most of what you said, but I also think that they don't endorse getting your phone wet, simply because they do not want to be held liable if their product doesn't hold up.
But I do want a waterproof case in the worst way.

I know that they want to cover their ass, but my issue is with them advertising it as an invisible waterproof case and not what it really is, a "just in case you drop your phone in water this MIGHT save it" solution.
You don't see case manufacturers dropping and throwing phones in their cases to show how durable they are and then tell you that it may not do its job when you drop it so don't do it...
I will probably buy the sprays tomorrow and experiment with an old phone I have laying around to see if the ports on it still work.
The only hardware feature missing for me in the galaxy S4 is being waterproof.
What about Galaxy S4 Active + Never wet...... ? Amazing....

That scares me... I played in the pool for a long time with my active and it worked with no issues. I did swap it out for a new one because the power button was loose. So now im afraid to test the new one out because if it isn't air tight like my other one I don't want to lose it.
I plan on getting this and spraying my S4 Active's internals so that will probably make it ast a lot longer also my windshield in my car and my wife's phone

And I'm sure Sammy will find reasons like: you kept the phone too much or too deep in the water.
It seems like the phone can be wet only in case of accident, not for pool playing.

LOL. The active has a camera mode for taking pictures under water.
Hey, I was wondering if any other nexus users also drove a motorbike? Any suggestions for how to mount (securely) and charge it would be greatly appreciated. I have a Honda CBR250R if it makes a difference. Currently considering a Ram mount but i dont think they make a nexus 4 model...

This seems to be the best i could find, not 100% it will fit. But it seems adjustable. And heaps sturdy.
If anyone has a better suggestion, just post or PM
+1 on the XGrip cradle. Very secure.
yup get the xmount cradle along with this http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResu...d/082065077045066045049055054085/Default.aspx
and finally one of these

Don't you have a waterproof case or do you never drive in the rain?
I also have a nexus and I am looking for a waterproof case, mountable on motorbike, and cable connected to battery.
Something like this : www.rammount.com/Products/AQUABOX/MediumAQUABOX/tabid/4885/Default.aspx , but I don't know if this is big enough to fit nexus 4 and a usb chargercable in it. According to the specifications it would be a very close fit, but maybe if i remove a little bit from the inside bottom it might work.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks,
Tim

dont ride in the rain unless its an unexpected shower. phone was usually always in my pocket. if i needed to be able to see it..like nav (which honeslty i just used headphones and voice nav) i would stick it in my tank bag with the clear pocket on top

So did you find anything?
Well, I ordered a Ultimate Addons tough case for galaxy s3 with handlebar mount. The S3 is slightly smaller so there is more room for an adaptercable in case to connect to battery when u use nexus. But the S3 is also about 1/2 mm thinner so i can close the case but it leaves some space between edges because if bit to thick. There is a big rubber plate in case to secure phone (1/2 cm) where i was able to scratch off the right amount to fit the nexus in perfectly. Rear camera is still usable, volume buttons not and audio jack not, front camera half visible.
The phone now fits perfect in case and u can touch and slide. Because of not reaching power button i use the shake app wgen i use case and so I just shake to unlock screen. I attached the handlebar to my motorcycle, looks nice and firm, but was having doubts for putting my phone in the case for the first ride, so i just connected case but without phone in it and went riding. All worked great, u can twist phonecase in any direction at and then fix it at good viewpoint, problem is I have feeling it is never fixed solid enough, if i touch it a little , it moves, but it never moved when driving, I drive a honda transalp 650 and I quite push it to limit on speedbumps etc. I haven't tested it with my phone in it yet because on the first testride i got hit by car (his fault, again..) and slammed to ground and ended 40 metres further with bike against rail, i was lucky having very good protection, and the case was still intact and didnt move . My bike lost two mirrors and scratched and bruised all over, but in the end, good test, too bad my phone was not in it. I will test it when my bike gets back from garage
Grtz
